    $5 Home Automation Button

We wanted an easy way to trigger a "bedtime" routine on our home automation hub (the Hubitat Elevation), which turns off most lights, sets others to dim levels, and changes the thermostat setpoints. I decided to combine a Zigbee contact switch with a simple pushbutton to make this a 1-click operation.

    https://preview.redd.it/06gkj9gdod861.jpg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=66d9555c02c748dbd1665da8dd4079531a9e4c78

I used a Gen-1 Iris Zigbee Contact Sensor. Since Iris went out of business, these can be easily found on popular auction sites. I bought a package of 10 for $30, shipped. They did not include magnets for the sensor, but that wasn't important for my purpose.

    https://preview.redd.it/1z78bbxynd861.jpg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abb3115cfcca5bd5977eb60f1d2f3cc7dd7f8d5e

To turn it into a trigger device, I wired a momentary NO switch across the Iris magnetic reed switch contacts so that pressing the button would have the same effect as bringing a magnet up to it. The switch was about $2, bringing the total cost (not counting 12" of wire and a scrap block of wood) to a whopping $5 US.

I found it easier to remove the circuit board from the case before adding the wires. Cut the wire into equal lengths and carefully strip about 2mm off each end. It works best to tin each end of the wire with a bit of solder, then add a tiny bit of solder to each end of the magnetic switch. Touch the tinned end of the wire to the end of the switch, apply a bit of heat from the soldering gun, remove it, and hold for a few seconds while it cools.

Once you've connected wires to each end of the magnetic switch, route them so they exit the sensor case. I used the tip of my soldering iron to make a groove in the case for the wires.

    https://preview.redd.it/r3eyam72od861.jpg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7fcefd7c84290157fceba4011a9a8099fbadb0b8

If you haven't already paired the sensor to your alarm or automation system, this is a good to insert a battery and go through the pairing process. Once it's paired, touch the ends each wire together and verify that your alarm or automation system reads it as "closed".

For the enclosure, I wanted something that looks nice on a bedside table. I started with a scrap block of hard maple that I salvaged from an old butcherblock kitchen table.

    https://preview.redd.it/87qshki4od861.jpg?width=1562&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1996e0e49f65bf5eb1eb4043d664797bf7a38af1

First, I sketched out the approximate dimensions of the sensor on the block. Using a forstner bit in a drill press, I drilled holes the appropriate depth and about 1.5" longer than the sensor, creating a pocket on the underside of the block. A few minutes with a chisel cleaned up the pocket so the sensor fits snugly.

To give it a slight angle, I drew a line along one side and cut it on the bandsaw. Using a smaller forstner bit, I marked and drilled a hole for the pushbutton.

After sanding to 220 grit and easing the sharp edges, I applied 2 coats of clear lacquer and buffed with 0000 steel wool for a silky finish.

    https://preview.redd.it/76fv3n46od861.jpg?width=1468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aed9ff24b9c7d35203735e37592c0d664fd35bd1

After assembling the button and sensor, I added a bit of Velcro to the inside of the pocket and the top of the sensor to hold it in place.

HomeKit has re-invigorated my passion with home automation.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:28 PM PST

When I bought my current house in 2013 I was planning on doing home automation. I was looking at VeraLite until SmartThings came up on Kickstarter. I bought the Kickstarter hub and was on my way.

I've changed and added a lot of devices along the way, upgraded to v2 then v3 hub (bought the v2 cheap second hand but it seemed to be bricked so I just bought a v3 retail to get back running again), and even gave Home Assistant a shot through HASS.IO. I've also tried out Sharptools and Actiontiles.

Since the depreciation of the legacy SmartThings app the system has just been so slow, even compared to the early days when very little was executed locally.

But, over the holidays I swapped my Shield TV for an Apple TV 4K and eventually wanted to see what HomeKit was about.

Wow. Once I got HOOBS running with plugins to bring my Blue Iris camera feeds and SmartThings devices into a single, beautiful, consistent interface across all devices I'm actually excited about fixing and replacing stuff I gave up on a long time ago. My excuse was why replace faulty switches when their automation is so unreliable.

I know the SmartThings hub is still executing commands to the Zigbee and Z-Wave devices, but manual interaction through the Home app is so much quicker and easier than the ST app. Plus it's on my TV, and my Watch.

Knowing Groovy on SmartThings is going away soon and not knowing what the replacement will be, I'm considering jumping to a Hubitat hub instead too.

I may even grab some old iPad Minis and slam them on the wall.

Nest mini / electricq smart bulb?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:58 PM PST

Is it possible to control "electriq" smart bulbs using the Google Nest Mini?

I can use the Tuya app on my phone to control the bulb but the Nest won't recognise it.

Should I get a different brand of bulb?

what system to go with now? looking to combine everything as much as possible with security

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 05:23 PM PST

    Hello

Currently running smartthing v2 that has all z-wave on it, I have bunch of locks and couple motion.

For security I running a Frontpoint system that is bare bone but i have to pay for the premium plan so smartthings and arm/disarm

I currently have no z-wave on the alarm.

I also have some NEST (lock, door bell, smoke) that i just bought. while it seems to work, I now have 3 apps to manage everything 4 if you count the alarm

we also have some lights (hue and some LED stripes) that "work with google" and they do work very well, actually the google stuff seems to work way better and faster than anything on the hub.

I am looking at scout currently. and found adobe also.

our internet is not the best if i could a local control for the hub stuff would be good and if it can connect to the cloud stuff and control them the in actions and things that would be nice.

    I need more reliable control.

Now the security side: I have not really done anything because the z-wave sensors didn't seem reliable but the zwave+ seem much better now. I would really like to do one monitoring thing and save some money monthly. and use my same sensors, the frontpoint sensors wont connect to smartthings nor can they used buy smart things to trigger things :(

I can still return the nest stuff (i really like the yale lock over my Schlage locks that eat batteries i also have kiwi locks that REALLY eat batterys 5 dead bolts and 3 regular) I have alot of doors.

    Seeking 20A Weather-resistant Z-wave electrical outlet

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 08:43 PM PST

I'm looking for a 20A weather-resistant Z-wave outlet that I can use to switch holiday lights on and off. My wife keeps connecting too many strands to the dusk/dawn timers which cannot handle the full wattage of the aggregated lights even though the outlet can. The outlet is on a dedicated GFCI circuit, but the single GFCI outlet is in the basement. So I don't need GFCI included in the Z-wave outlet that I want to install within the weatherproof container on my porch, but I do want an outlet that is rated as weather resistant. For functionality, I just want the ability to turn it on and off from my Z-wave controller. Thanks in advance.

Mounting a Lutron Aurora dimmer without a toggle switch?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 06:02 PM PST

I have a small loft that I'm using as an office and my lamp has a Hue bulb. I use the Aurora dimmer to avoid needing to open my phone to adjust the lamp. These are designed to mount very easily to an existing toggle switch but there is no existing switch or plate on the wall where my desk is. How would you mount this?

PDF of the installation instructions with diagrams is here: https://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/0301916_Aurora_Advanced_Install_Guide.pdf

Roborock S4 or S5? Or something else?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 05:29 PM PST

I'm looking for recommendations for a robot vacuum. It seems like the Roborock is generally liked, so I am looking at buying one. I own a condo that is mostly carpet, so I don't really need a mopping feature. I have no pets, however, my hair is long. I shed a lot and what I mostly want vacuumed is my hair from the floor. I'm also looking for a robot that can vacuum the edges of my carpets with strong suction. I'm dealing with a slight carpet beetle issue, so having something to help me vacuum daily would be a huge help.
    TIA!

Is it possible to convert the 120V from an unneeded outlet switch to a 5V to feed the common wire of a Z-Wave switch?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:17 PM PST

I have a tough situation and am hoping there is an angle here that I'm not considering.

I have two different rooms that are wired to have the primary switch as you enter the room control an outlet. There are overhead lights in each room, but they are controlled by random outlets across the room, I don't know why they are set up that way. In both cases, there is not a common wire at the switches.

The three options, as I've considered, are:

    1. Have an electrician run a common wire to the switches and configure Smartthings to turn the overhead lights off when the outlet is turned off
    2. Use Caseta for just those two rooms, since they don't require a neutral (the rest of the house is Leviton)
    3. Figure some way to use the existing 120V in the switch to power a Z-wave switch that would only function as a control, it wouldn't actually directly control a switch

I don't want to use Hue because it's an extra bridge and unless I cover up the switches on both sides with Hue remotes, there will always be annoyances with the switch being off and the Hue not working.

Has anyone else run into this issue when putting smart switches in an older house?

Google Assistant voice command for color switching lights

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:21 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

First of all, let me apologize for any mispelling as I'm not really used to writing in English.

The thing is that my family bought me some Smart Bulbs from Lohas LED that use an app named "Tuya Smart" and a LED strip from Govee that uses the Govee Home app.

I added all of them to one room in Google Home and as long as I ask for simple colors like "Change the room to Blue" it works just fine but I can't manage to get any of those light to use the "Changing color" or the Warm/Cool light options. Is there any way to get any of those options working or is it simply that Google Assistant can't work to that extend yet?

    Thank you in advance!

Does a battery powered "IoT" / HA thermostat exist?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 03:57 PM PST

    Hi,

I'm looking for a 2 wire / no volt thermostat that runs off battery but has some form of external controls that can ideally integrate with Home Assistant / MQTT / or similar open API.

I don't mind if its Wifi / Zigbee / ZWave / Bluetooth / etc, so long as it works.

    Thanks

Need help with Schlage Connect (BE469). Anyone move from Wink to SmartThings?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 07:36 PM PST

I bailed on Wink when they started charging a monthly fee and bought a Samsung SmartThings. I am just now getting around to moving my Schlage Connect over to it from Wink. I have been just using it essentially as a keypad with its historic code but I'd like to get back to having the smart capabilities as well.

When I tried to move it wouldn't connect on the SmartThings app. I tried all 4 of the different options for Schlage (Connect Z-Wave, Connect ZigBee, Schlage Keypad, and Schlage Touchscreen) and none of them work.

Did anyone else experience any issues with moving from Wink to SmartThings with this particular model (BE469)? Did I need to unpair it from Wink or something along those lines?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Edit: Looks like their site is back online. Sorry for the false alarm!

Network accessible audio mixer for speaker groups?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:47 AM PST

I will be moving into a house soon that I will be doing a full network overhaul on. Part of my plan is to install some indoor/outdoor speakers for ambiance and parties. I would like to be able to control these speakers in groups. Kitchen, living room, back porch, front porch, etc. from anywhere in the house, inside or outside.

I plan to have a single dedicated android tablet for controlling home functions, as well as a Xen server running any services I need. So far I have looked at the Behringer XR-12 network mixer as well as using VoiceMeeter with VBAN as possible solutions, but these both have limited output capabilities.

    My main issues are:

    • I need easy access to mixer controls so that I don't need to physically walk into a closet to turn knobs.

    • I want to be able to group physical outputs for volume control. I.E. I would at least like to have inside and outside speakers play at separate volumes.

    • I want to select media to play over the network from Plex, Spotify, Etc.

    • I would like to pay less than $500 for this solution, excluding speakers, wiring, etc. Just the mechanism that groups and feeds the devices.

Apologies if this isn't the right place to ask. I don't know where else I would go.

Shelly 2.5 in 3-way switch circuit with two lights

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 06:15 PM PST

Hi everyone. This may not be the place for this question (so please let me know if there's a better place to post!), but my questions relates to installing Shellys into a setup like this: switch diagram. I know with a single light you can put one at the light box, as described in this post, but I can't quite conceptualize this working with two lights in parallel. Does anyone know if any guides exist for this setup? At this point, my head is spinning and I could use all the help I can get.

    Thanks!

Lutron Caseta dimmer with Wiz recess lights

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 05:10 PM PST

So we updated our basement with 12 Philips Wiz Dimmable Color lights. The previous setup was simple BR30 bulbs hooked up to Lutron dimmer switches.

Took a while to setup each line one by one since we are on 5Ghz wifi. Added the wiz app into the Google home environment. Somehow shows 13 lights instead of 12.

Voice commands aren't functioning as Google responds with 12 lights aren't responding. Although the dimmer switches are functional to turn the lights on and off and dim them.

The wiz app changes colors but it does act strange when using to power on and off. As if the entire Lutron and Google control system is messing with it.

Anyone else have these experiences with Wiz lights/Lutron Caseta/Google home?

Which is better long-term - DIY or Professional Alarm System?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 08:51 AM PST

Currently investigating home alarm systems and torn on how I should move toward. I'm looking at SimpliSafe/Ring/Abode, however I question the quality of their equipment, overall security (based on reviews and YouTube videos/demonstrations), and ecosystem lock in. Does a professionally installed system using tried and true companies and components such as DSC just make more sense in the long run? With these more traditional systems, do I lose out on stuff like IoT monitoring and manipulation or are modules available to enhance system capabilities?

Overall, I guess, I see SimpliSafe/Ring/Abode offering a bunch of bells and whistles where as a more traditional system just does the basics... but maybe that's a good thing?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide. Looking for different perspectives and thoughts.
