I'm looking for a timer to control a solenoid to automatically flush my hot water heater. Ideas?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 07:35 PM PDT

I want to install a solenoid on my drain valve for my hot water heater. That way I can drain sediment from it weekly. I need a timer circuit to control the solenoid. It would run for 1 minute once a week. It would need to be water resistant, or a way to make it so. Any ideas?

Question about asking Alexa one question with two responses

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:09 PM PDT

Hi, does anyone know if I can ask a single custom question like "Alexa, what is my temperature status?" and have her respond with the temperature being reported by my Nest thermostat, and then what the thermostat is set to? For example, her response would be "[Nest thermostat name] is set to 68. The [Nest thermostat name] is 70 degrees."

Right now I have to say, "Alexa what is the [Nest thermostat name] set to?" and she responds "[Nest thermostat name] is set to 68." Then I have to say, "Alexa, what is the temperature of [Nest thermostat name]?" and she replies, "The [Nest thermostat name] is 70 degrees."

I want to ask one question and have her report both of those back to me. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

Open Garage Door from Keypad / Temporary Pin

    Posted: 16 May 2020 04:58 PM PDT

We have an Airbnb that we give people a garage access code to let them in for their stay. We change this code for each guest.

The product we have is called Trackpin. We can control the codes from an app. I don't think Trackpin caught on and the support hasn't been as good lately.

Our system isn't working now. Any recommendations for a replacement? I'd be willing to replace the motor but I want to be able to change the PIN from an app and monitor open close.

It looks like MyQ or Aladdin Connect don't allow you to change keypad codes remotely. Any suggestions?

Connecting Echo Dot and Xbox to one single 2 channel amp.

    Posted: 16 May 2020 06:02 PM PDT

I have a SMSL SA-50 Plus amp. Just got an Echo Dot and would like to connect it to my bookshelf speakers. The issue is the Xbox is already connected to the audio input on the amp and I use this for Netflix etc. There is only one input on the amp. I'd like to be able to connect the Echo Dot to the amp as well for Apple Music and anything else. I'm using a Toslink 3.5mm to optical cable for the Xbox currently. Would it be possible to use a cable splitter? do I need an audio mixer? an audio switch?

    Need help resetting HomeSeer HS-WD100+

    Posted: 16 May 2020 12:43 PM PDT

Hey folks, does anyone know how to migrate the wd100+ to a new smartthings hub? The instructions say to quickly tap 3 times up and 3 times down. That's not working. I've been trying for 10 minutes and nothing happens. I got a flicker once, but that's it.

    Battery Powered Light Strip

    Posted: 16 May 2020 02:09 PM PDT

Hi all! We've decided to do some renovations on our house starting with the closet. New paint, new shelving, new everything. With that, I want to install some smart strip lights under the shelves which will illuminate when the door contact sensor opens. Unfortunately, we don't have any outlets in the closet to plug in to and the only power source is the one overhead bulb. Any thoughts on this?

    Remote control for smart plugs?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 12:16 PM PDT

I am thinking of using smart plugs and smart switches in my home, which can all easily be controlled on my phone. However, I want my guests to be able to also easily control all of the lights - is there some way to do this, beyond the insane use of glueing a phone to the wall that only has the app??

Smart lock recommendation that goes OVER lock and does not replace assembly

    Posted: 16 May 2020 07:05 AM PDT

Can anyone recommend a smart lock that goes over the current lock hardware and merely turns it. I'm in a rented apartment with a mortise lock so - the mortise options are not a possibility. The only lock that I have found so far is the sesame (https://candyhouse.co) but this has mixed reviews. Ideally would like to see if anything else exists that merely turns the existing lock.

Do i gain or lose any features when flashing Shelly 2.5 with Tasmota

    Posted: 16 May 2020 08:09 AM PDT

    TLDR

What are the pros and cons if any by flashing the Shelly 2.5 with Tasmota

I understand that deafult Shelly 2.5 supports mqtt and how to enable it but ....

    1. Any difference in stability?
    2. I imagine i would have a bit more control over the shelly 2.5 with tasmota
    3. I never plan on using "cloud" integration with shelly 2.5 everything i do will be locally hosted with mqtt so the cloud feature doesnt interest me (i have a vpn if i want to control something in my home remotely)
    4. If i flash it with tasmota do i need to calibrate the power sensor https://tasmota.github.io/docs/Power-Monitoring-Calibration/
    5. Anything im not thinking of

    Thanks in Advance

    REASON FOR MY QUESTION

My only experience with Tasmota with with a Sonoff S 31 plug and after i entered the appropriate username/password/serverip:port Home Assistant picked it up automatically so it was a pleasant experience

The Shelly 2.5 on the other hand i upgraded the factory firmware to the latest and i can access it locally via a web browserI enabled MQTT and entered the appropriate username/password/serverip:port and i see in the MQTT logs that it authenticates with MQTT server (just like the Sonoff S 31) but it doesnt show up in the Home Assistant so i am thinking of flashing it with Tasmota

    Old Audioaccess system

    Posted: 16 May 2020 07:45 AM PDT

    Old Audioaccess system

I'm hoping you all can point me in the right direction.

My house has 2 in-wall speakers in every room. It was part of an old Audioaccess system. Each room also has a control panel with a volume knob and push button selector. Image attached.

    https://preview.redd.it/7yicmc6z25z41.jpg?width=228&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=353d651868c719a0cb50522d191eb325bc100c4f

My goal is to power 4-5 sets of these speakers (each with the ability to play their own source), retain the ability to control volume at the volume knob, but also have smart phone access to volume + source. The only source we really need is streaming music: Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora etc.

All of the wires terminate in 1 location.

I looked at Sonos, but it seems excessive to purchase 5 Sonos amps at $600 a pop. Is there a more logical way to do this?

Off the shelf 120vac transmitter to 120vac receiver for retrofit

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:13 AM PDT

I've been having a hard time finding an off the shelf solution for making 3 existing wall switches wireless to control a single line. The best I could find was this on amazon however that provides the switch and the transmitter is DC button actuated (I bought it to check it out).
There are plenty of DC transmitter to AC receiver solutions. However I can't find any 120VAC transmitter to 120VAC receiver products. Does anyone know of any? The end result would be making 3 120VAC switches wireless to control a single 120VAC line.

Ecolink z-wave Motion Sensor - SmartThings

    Posted: 16 May 2020 07:19 AM PDT

Hey all, long story short, I had a smartthings hub die on me and i'm migrating everything to a v3 ST hub. I have an ecolink sensor that i need to move into the new hub. Does anyone know how to put the ecolink into pairing mode. The documentation shows how to reset it by removing it from your smartthings hub but they don't show how to do a reset to factory and initiate pairing.

I contacted ecolink support, we'll see how long that takes. Thanks all.

Problems blocking IoT devices from internet (ASUS Merlin)

    Posted: 16 May 2020 06:38 AM PDT

My home network consists of one router running asus merlin, and 2 access points running original asuswrt. I have disabled internet access on my IoT devices using the GUI, through the time scheduling option. However, my IoT devices frequently disconnect and try to reconnect to another AP. I figure this might be because they are trying to connect to the internet. This causes frequent disconnections and my IoT devices often do not respond. Is there a way to block their internet access and not have the problems with disconnections?

Looking for advice for the network in my new home.

    Posted: 16 May 2020 06:31 AM PDT

I'm building a new home and I will be smart. Leaving the smart home stuff aside, I will also wire the house with ethernet cable for pretty much every place but bathrooms.

I'll have 2 or 3 POE access points, 4 POE cameras, one POE intercom. Seems that a 8 ports POE switch would suffice. I'll also have 2 ethernet wall sockets in the living room, and 5 more around the house that I don't anticipate needing POE in the short term, and will probably have a Raspberry pi and a NAS in the connection cabinet next to the POE switch, and maybe the solar inverter will have rj45 too.

To simplify/minimize the wiring I think I'll have two switches in different parts of the house.

I'm not too savvy in networking, nor I have very special needs for my home, but I want to be future proof, so I was thinking about wiring cat7a/cat8 cable. Now switches seems to be able to communicate with each other with fiber and something called SPF/SPF+ ports, is that how one should connect the main and secondary switches?

I'd take advice on wether cat8 is overkill or if I should get spf+ routers, etc... Also about specific equipment. I heard good things about unifi access points and switches, but I don't really need them to be managed. At least I don't see why I would.

    Outdoor Hose Faucet meter

    Posted: 16 May 2020 06:22 AM PDT

I've been googling and googling, but can't seem to find exactly what I need. Here are the features I would want:

    • Metering of water through outside spigots
    • Push Notification
      • Water turned on
      • Water still on after x min (or something like that)
    • Do NOT want it to be app controlled to turn water on

The problem is that our kids keep leaving the water on overnight :( Happened a bit last summer and cost us a lot of money, woke up this morning to the same problem.

At the very least I want to be notified that the water is still on with a push, but ideally I could set a shut-off timer so that it never stays on for too long.

FYI - I have Smartthings and Alexa, so would be helpful if I could integrate with one or both, but not necessary.

    Thanks in advance!

Proximity Sensors for a Weird and Challenging Problem

    Posted: 16 May 2020 09:54 AM PDT

Hi guys, first time in this subreddit, and I have a complex problem that needs solving, and I'd like to use some technology to do it. The problem is that I have a cat that pisses all over my house. He's already been to the vet several times, so underlying medical conditions have been ruled out. I am trying to train him to stop doing that, but it is a difficult behavior to change for several reasons, and before someone tells me to try some calming pheromones, spray deterrent, litter attractant, different litter, different style box, confinement to a single room or crate, etc. etc., I'm just going to point out that I'm a professional behavior analyst, I already tried all the obvious stuff, and the solution is not going to be that simple. Holy shit, I wish it were that simple. So, in lieu of murdering the cat, I'd like to try a technological solution.

In order to effectively train the cat, I need more information about his behavior, and this is where I need some help. Previously I had used a motion detector camera to keep tabs on the room where the problem urination began, but then I discovered that he had started whizzing in practically every room in the house. Motion detection in every room was not feasible. I can't even monitor the litter boxes and infer that problem urination has occurred from a lack of urine in the box, because I have three cats and four litter boxes which are located in three different rooms. I read about optical and pressure sensors, but I think these would create a lot of noise from the other two cats.

Someone gave me the idea of using a proximity sensor to monitor behavior. I imagine this would entail the use of four sensors- one on each litter box- and a target which would need to be small and light enough to hang on a large cat's breakaway-style collar. I'm picturing something like a small key fob. The ideal range would be small (like 2 or 3 ft) to reduce noise from him just randomly walking through rooms and near the boxes. The system would have to produce a record of each event somehow (maybe a spreadsheet?). Basically I need to able to record three things: 1) I need to know which litter boxes are being visited in order to assess his litter-box preferences, 2) I need to know at what times of day the visits occur, because then if there's an unusual gap, I'll know to look around for messes, and 3) I need to know the duration of each visit in order to distinguish between a drive-by and an actual elimination-event.

Those are my immediate needs. Bonus points to anyone who can also figure out a way to have notifications sent to my phone immediately so I can run over to the box in question and reinforce the cat's behavior, or better yet, automate the process by tying it to something like a treat dispenser which would dole out a cat treat contingent on something like 30 seconds spent in proximity of a box.

Also worth knowing: I am a proficient computer user, but I don't currently know how to program or code. I also don't really know how to do any wiring/soldering/electrical. The simpler the system, the better. Also, I'm not really familiar with smarthome products in general. I tried to research what's out there, but amount of information was totally overwhelming. Lastly, at this point, I am willing to throw quite a lot of money at the problem. Don't worry about the budget.

    Any ideas?
