What are some cool Home Automation ideas?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:22 AM PDT

I just got HA setup and I'm amazed at all the possibilities. In the past, I've really only controlled lights (I also have a Rachio automatic watering system). Is there lists of home automation ideas or recipes for HA?

We need a pinned post with beginners tips for a certain budget.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:10 PM PDT

I just discovered this sub and I think it would be great if you had pinned posts that describe the most useful automations new people can add to their home.

    For example guestimates

25$ - Smart lightbulbs - never have to get up to turn your light off again.

90$ - servo motor, pully, and pi - automatically close blinds

What do y'all think? Let's make it happen!

Edit* And maybe link a tutorial next to the price.

Good outdoor light strip for 40ft garden box?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:49 PM PDT

Have a 40ft garden box in the backyard against the fence. Box has 10 larger plants(4ft tall) I am looking to light from the bottom. Considering color changing led light strip that would be powered from one side. Also open to smaller spotlights. Currently running ST with Google Home speakers. Anyone have a recommendation? Every single brand on Amazon has fake reviews.

    Home server (thin client) opinions

    Posted: 16 May 2020 12:15 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a server run a few vms, and put in three thin clients at home in place of older, failing desktops.

I found a guy selling a Dell R710 for $300 with the following specs and was hoping to get some opinions. Thanks for the input. Note: He's already tried to tell me they were built/released in 2019 which I know isn't true, but I haven't gotten the service tags yet.

    iDrac6 Enterprise
VFlash, 8GB SD Card for iDRAC Enterprise
PERC H700 Integrated RAID Cont roller, 1GB NV Cache, x8
    64GB Memory
    2x Intel Xeon X5677, 3.46Ghz
    4x Dell 300GB 10K 6G SAS 2.5"
    Sliding Ready Rails

    Secondary option is $250

    Dell PowerEdge R420 rack-mounted server.

    2 x 6-core Intel Xeon CPU E5-2430L @ 2.0 GHz (6x256 L2 cache -- one per core and shared 15MB L3 cache)
    32GB ECC DDR3 RAM @ 1330MHz (1.35V)
    2TB HDD (2 x 1TB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gbps 3.5in RE3 HDD)
    2 x gigabit ethernet ports

Broadlink RM4C - how to trigger actions based on forecast, outdoor temp, or email?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:33 PM PDT

    Howdy,

I bought an RM4C with the new temp sensor cable, only to discover for some weird reason there is an RM4 and a RM4C model, and the temp sensor doesn't work with the RM4C.

Anyway, I became more interested in whether there is a way like IFTTT to trigger actions in the RM4C based on things like:

    - external weather site forecast or current temp - IFTTT says it works with Weather Underground but doesn't actually seem too - I think the API has changed.

    - again, maybe IFTTT on the basis of email triggers. eg. I have acurite temp sensors that can email me alerts when they hit specified temperatures. But not sure how to turn those emails automatically into IFTTT or similar triggers for the RM to do things.

    Appreciate any tips.

    Cheers,

    B

Resetting Wellmet LED patio lights (Magic Home App)

    Posted: 15 May 2020 05:58 PM PDT

Anyone know how to reset these lights?

    https://www.amazon.ca/Wellmet-Waterproof-Dimmable-Restaurants-Assistant/dp/B07RW986GC

Swapped out my router for a new one, and now I need to reconnect to the new SSID. I don't have the docs it came with, and the app is no help. I've tried resetting them by power cycling 3+ times, no avail, they don't even turn on. I see no other button on it to reset. Any ideas? Can i flash ESPHome on this device?

    In-wall smart home product suggestions?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:40 PM PDT

Due to a change in automation plans, I have many rooms with vacant high and low voltage boxes in the wall at light switch level. These were going to be for things that are no longer part of the plan, like home audio volume controls.

Any suggestions on what I can repurpose these for? Looking for some cool in-wall tech I haven't come across. Maybe surveillance cameras, touchscreens, Alexa/Google mics, etc. I have Lutron lighting controls so no light switches. I love the idea behind Brilliant Controls touchscreen light switches (https://www.brilliant.tech), but I can't use them so that's not an option.

    Issue with GE zwave switch

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:49 PM PDT

Recently had to get aSmartThings hub to replace my Wink hub, and since then, one of my two GE switches is acting odd. Typically, when it is off, there is a small blue led that lights to signify the switch is off. The light goes off when the switch is powering the connected fan or light.

Now, since I paired it to the Smarthings hub, one of the two switches is just the opposite. The LED light on the switch is dark when the switch is powering the lights. The one for the fan behaves as it always has.

Any ideas how to fix it? Normally I'd just delete from Smarthings and re-pair, but 1) I can't imagine that SmartThings is the cause and 2) it was a b*tch to get it to pair for some reason

I have a basic plug in detector in my house but would like to have one in the crawl space where the line is running just for peace of mind. Ive found a few with a google search but I am interested to see if anyone here has experience with one.

    NFC Mortise Locks

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:13 AM PDT

Hi there! My contractor is on the tail end of our construction project and will be hanging doors in the next few weeks. I have 13.56 Mhz NFC implants and am wanting to integrate access control in the house for the bedroom, server room, and back door. I am torn on what locks to buy - I am certain I want mortise style locks, like hotel doors - and obviously need something weather resistant because at least one will be on an exterior door. The Samsung ones look like the most reliable option right now - but it seems like there are a number of Korean and Chinese versions that cloud the market and have different feature sets or are confusing to install. Also not sure if they are suitable for exterior doors. The SHS-P710 is the one I have been looking at. It's a real mortise lock, not just a motorized deadbolt. The market is also full of really well priced ones designed for the hospitality industry. Are they actually worth looking into?

    Thank you!

Other than Alexa, why pick Ecobee SmartThermostat over Ecobee Lite?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:07 PM PDT

I'm moving into my new home a month from today and a smart deadbolt and two smart thermostats will be installed the first day with plans to integrate into a HA system soon thereafter.

From what I can tell, the big features the Ecobee SmartThermostat has over the Ecobee lite is all the Alexa fluff that I don't really care about. From a HA standpoint, is there any reason to pay for the SmartThermostat over the Lite version? I can't seem to find any, but I'm still very new to this.

Aoetec Smart Switch 6 not updating power consumption?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:07 PM PDT

So after asking for help hacking a contact sensor into my electric kettle and everyone telling me that I could get the functionality I was after using a smart plug with power metering I went ahead and ordered an Aoetec Smart Switch 6 wall wart to replace the Gosund WiFi one I had been using.

The wall wart installed perfectly and when I tested it happily showed 0kW with the kettle turned off and 1.46kW of power consumption while the kettle is in operation. HOORAY!!! You guys are the best and I'm so glad that I asked for help.

I quickly threw an automation into my ST such that If: consumption<=1 Then: turn off wall wart

I powered up the kettle and it was merrily heating away towards boiling so in order to test the automation I picked the kettle up off it's base. My expectation was that would drop consumption to 0 since the kettle is not longer connected to the base and drawing power which would trigger the automation to cut the power to the wall wart.

Instead what happened was 1) kettle removed 2) wall wart remains powered 3) ST shows no drop in consumption whatsoever

My assumption is that somewhere in the ether lies some sort of polling interval that only checks power consumption every however many seconds or minutes instead of reporting it in real time. Unfortunately that renders it useless for my needs.

Can anyone help possibly shed a little light on what's going on and maybe even help me fix the issue? I guess I can go back to the WiFi wall wart and back in a contact sensor as I had been planning before since I know for a fact that will function as needed for this application but I would much rather take this opportunity to learn something if at all possible.

Google Nest WiFi and New ISP

    Posted: 15 May 2020 05:28 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I have a question that I hope this is the right forum to get an answer. I just recently switched ISPs from AT&T to Spectrum in Indianapolis, IN. These are the only 2 possible ISP/ in my neighborhood. Verizon 5G home isn't available here yet either.

AT&T is $60/month for 100Mbps. I was actually getting about half that, but I have a lot of Wi-Fi connected devices, 25-30 or so. I saw Spectrum is about $65/month for 400Mpbs. I thought, what the heck why not make the switch. With this switch I ditched the AT&T modem/router combo and upgraded to a Google Nest WiFi router and added a second Google Nest to act as an extender.

With all of that said, my problem is my internet seems to be dropping out for about 60 seconds at a time multiple, multiple times per day.

I guess my question is 1. Is it Spectrum or is it the Google Nest that's dropping the signal? 2. How can I verify if it's one or the other?

    Thanks in advance.

    Aeotec Z-Stick firmware

    Posted: 15 May 2020 04:59 PM PDT

Where the hell do I find updated firmware for this device. I'm trying to use SiLabs Z/IP gateway and it fails complaining about needing the dongle to be in bridge mode. I can't for the life of me find where I would find the firmware for this device or how to update it. Anyone do this before?

    Helpful tips for a beginner

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:25 PM PDT

So I am moving into a new home and wanted to automate some things such as lights, window sensors, and such.

I currently use Alexa to turn on my smart light bulbs, adjust my thermostat, and turn on the fan in my bedroom. I have searched Google and it seems that most guides I come across seem to involve needing knowledge of coding, which I have none. Also, is there any benefit to using zigbee or z-wave products over wifi ones?

Am I pretty much hopeless without knowing anything about coding? Or would I be able to do some basic tasks with a hub like Smartthings?

What video doorbell can I use with a LAN setup?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:17 PM PDT

A few months back I purchased a Ring doorbell and it was ok until the free trial ended.

I don't want to pay a subscription, especially when I have a homelab where I would much rather keep my recordings.

The other weird part about the Ring doorbell was that after I installed a pi-hole on my network, it immediately disconnects from my wifi when trying to connect it. I even used Wireshark to view all the packets coming from that MAC and whitelisted them in the pi-hole.

    Circuit-level power consumption monitoring

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:27 AM PDT

Hi. I'm due to have my electric panel enlarged (or have a big subpanel attached, or whatever the electricians suggest) and before I move on I'd like to investigate my options for circuit-level power consumption. I know about Leviton's Load Center but are there other options (perhaps from companies with better reputations like Schneider or Eaton) I should look at? Small commercial solutions are okay, but all I really want is *monitoring*. I don't need control.

    Help with Hue and Zigbee

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:51 PM PDT

I am finishing my basement bathroom and decided to put a Philips Hue Ambience (Color) downlight over the tub, three Hue Filament bulbs over the vanity and a "dumb" light/fan in the middle of the room. To make it "smart," I bought and installed an RGBgenie Micro Controller (Mains Switch ZB-4003) which uses Zigbee 3.0 and only controls the light in the vent fan kit. I'm super new to Zigbee but this controller actually works with the Hue app (unfortunately it isn't being recognized in the iOS Home app due to not having native HomeKit).

With setup out of the way, my issue is I cannot get the vent light to turn off with Hue Scenes. It will turn on from a scene, it'll turn on/off if I toggle the Bathroom's master (virtual) switch in the app, and it'll turn on/off if I toggle the vent light in the app by itself. But I can't get the scene to turn it off. What's also weird is if I tap to edit a scene where the vent light is set to be off, back out, tap to edit and back out again...the vent light turns off... any/all help is appreciated. Thanks!

Amazon Alexa versus Google Mini. Which one is better?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:33 AM PDT

I'm using it primarily to stream music, YouTube and play white noise as I can't sleep at night due to severe tinnitus, so the sound quality is very important to me. I also want to maintain privacy as I heard that they listen into your every word? Also want to use it as an alarm clock too. Thanks in advance.

Looking for ideas on what to replace this fixture with

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:23 PM PDT

Currently have a 12-18 inch light fixture under my cabinets on each individual cabinet. On 5 of the 6 cabinets, they're directly wired as seen in this picture. One cabinet has a fixture daisy chained off the other, so I'll do the same with the new fixtures. I want to ideally replace all of them with fixtures that can be integrated into HomeKit/potentially Google Home.

    What are my options here?

Smart thermostat with a supported API

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:02 AM PDT

Hey, I was about to start a project using Smart heating.

I was going to use nest, however it seems Nest is in a weird state right now, with their old API unaccessable to new users, and their new google api isn't readily available (Still waiting for my invite).

I was wondering if anyone knew of a decent thermostat with a supported API?
