    DALI Controller/Hardware

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:55 PM PDT

Looking at hardwired lighting options for new construction and discovered DALI. It seems quite popular in Europe, but I'm having trouble finding US (120v) hardware. Can anyone provide a hardware suggestion that uses this standard? Also open to other hardwired open-source alternatives. Thanks!

Outdoor outlet for flood light and separate camera

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 11:54 PM PDT

I'm trying to figure a way to mount an outdoor flood light along with a nearby camera, preferably not an all-in-one (for various reasons) but would consider it.

Current setup: an old basic flood light hardwired to the side of an old house, x3, no switches on any.

Desired setup: At each location I would like to replace the old lights with an LED flood light that can be controlled from Home Assistant, at least off/on but dimming would be nice. I have existing motion sensors to trigger them (Zigbee I think? I have both a Zigbee hub and a Z-wave hub).
The locations of the existing mounts are fine for the new lights, or near them.
I also have three Wyze cameras with three outdoor mounts, and each would need USB power. Ideally each of them would be mounted a few feet away from the lights. Not a big deal if they're close or even in the same unit; I would just prefer a more streamlined look for the lights without a bulky camera mount.

My current thinking is to (have an electrician) replace the flood light junction box with a receptacle box, whose receptacle has one outlet enabled with Z-wave/Zigbee for the lights, and the other with a USB adapter for the Wyze camera.
Both the light and the camera would be plug-in devices whose wires run into a water-tight junction box.
I like for things to be code compliant and safe, however I haven't come across a Z-wave/Zigbee outlet that is outdoor rated, and not sure if a proper outdoor junction box satisfies this.

Is this doable, and/or is there a better solution?

ELAN MDA-1000 Audio Distribution Amplifier ?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 08:12 PM PDT

I am looking not for high fidelity whole house audio but more so of a single in-ceiling speaker in every room for notifications and/or background music: doorbell alerts, 3am outdoor motion detection to only certain speakers, light background music while doing the dishes, etc).

Had my eyes on the Monoprice z-wave amp but is too extreme, according my my wallet voice. I do see these ELAN MDA-1000 amps flying under the $100 alll the time. Or even the Elan M86A Multi-Room Audio Controller / Amplifier with USB/serial connections.

The latest greatest ELAN amps are $6k so that's no option.

Not much info on the pre-IP ELAN machines out there.

Anyone know if this is a viable option for interfacing with Home Automation?

Same command, different results. How is it that Google home can come up with different conclusions to the same request?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 12:12 PM PDT

Perfect example: I have a room in my home called "Monitors" that has a Roku TV and a smart socket.

When I say "OK google, turn on the monitors"
    - 95% of the time: "Ok turning on two things" and they turn on
    - 3% of the time: "Playing The Monitors on Spotify" and it plays music
    - 2% of the time: "Ok, turning on monitors" and only the plug turns on.

This morning I told it to play my Pandora station and it told me "Sorry, Pandora doesn't play videos".

I've got one of those new assistants with the screen and it shows me, in text, what my request is, and it heard me perfectly.

Is this some kind of connectivity issue with my devices? Is my voice too different to recognize in the morning?

Is using a smart switch to control everything possible?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 10:43 PM PDT

In one of my rooms, there are multiple type of lights that are plugged into the walls using smart plugs and a wifi enabled led strip. I normally control them using a Google Nest Mini or Amazon Echo (I have both cause I prefer google, but I order from amazon often so I like the notifications for that. I also have a smart switch connected to one of my outlets (there is no dedicated lighting fixture). I want to know if it was possible to have that one smart switch control all of the smart plugs in my room so I don't have to always use my voice or take out my phone, especially after a long day.

    Issue with Shark IQ RV1001AEC

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 04:37 PM PDT

    Hi,

Not sure if I am at the right place to post this. I got a 1.1 year old Shark IQ RV1001AEC with auto empty bin. Right outside of the warranty window. The thing boots up and get an error 21 (can't boot) Has anyone encountered this error? Any one had experience with this vacuum? Firmware update?

    Thanks!

Looking for a waterproof alert button that can transmit an alert to email or text

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 11:09 AM PDT

Edit - thanks to u/confuzedas down there who let me know that Wyze cameras will alert to lack of motion and that is perfect. When I originally put a camera a couple years back in my CNC that was not an option!

    Wyze Camera on its way.

    ——

I am trying to rig an alert system to my CNC machine at work, what I am trying to do is have an alert sent to my phone through text or email when the program is finished. That way I can drive into work and start the next program.

There are lots of super expensive and infrastructure-y ways of doing this but I need something quick and dirty for now.

All I want is a button that is waterproof (will be constantly splashed with coolant) that when you press it it will transmit an email or text.

Hell I can probably make a housing of some type that will make it waterproof, so that's not a hard requirement.

Any thoughts? As simple and dumb "push button, send email" as possible.

There is a better Universal Controler APP than Smart Life?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 03:57 PM PDT

I've just bought a universal IR controller and linked to my Smart Life App.

I adjusted my Samsung AC (with a bad interface and responsivity but, it turns on and off, altough I cannot turn 'swing' on and off, there is no sign that the selected mode is right, and feels weird to deal with)

I have a brandless-aliExpress-like RGB led tape, that are controlled through a cheap controller that comes with. I've just added every button that I use to it through the DIY mode.

Now, When it comes to link to my alexa, the only device found is my AC. My led tape doesn't show up.

When I try to enter the "thermostat" option that shows up, the app freezes, demanding a restart.

There is a 'universal' app better than this or, dunno, do you guys have any suggestion?

    Thanks in advance!

    Smart Surface Mount LED Lights?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:22 AM PDT

I'm in search of smart lighting for my new construction home. For months I "knew" I was going to get the Hue recessed lights because "go big or go home", right?

Welp, turns out the Hue recessed lights aren't compatible and would require a complete replacement of the junction boxes that the lights go into.... BUMMER.

Is there a smart light option that I can use? I'd prefer full RGB color, but cool/warm control will suffice. I'm also open to looking at different connection methods (wifi, bluetooth, z-wav, etc.)

Here's the light that will be installed in the home.

Replacing 60 relays and looking for Zwave or Zigbee dimmer like Sunoff Dualr3

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 07:30 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm interested in replacing about 40 to 60 relays in my house that control LED lights. I want to replace them with dimmers to control them on and off/dim using home assistant. I found the Sunoff dualr3 which appears to be exactly what I want EXCEPT it does not dim.

I found these online at Ali Baba - "SR-ZV9101SAC-HP-EU" , they're basically perfect but I'm skeptical about running main power through dimmers that don't appear to be UL certified.

Can anyone think of a product that is similar to the sunoff dualr3 that offers dimming?

    Electrical connections for Smart blinds/shades

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 02:04 PM PDT

I'm about to gut and remodel a house & want to wire it up for smart blinds as I put it back together.

I'm thinking that I need an electrical outlet within the window bay, but I'm unsure where to place it.

I haven't been able to find any how to articles about it.

Anyone here have some guidance for me? Where is the power coming from and how did you wire it up?

Help with Small Business Home Automation-ish?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 04:18 PM PDT

I am looking for a way to control the lights, temperature, front door access, front door video phone and probably a device or two in a small office. I'm not looking to spend 30k on some complicated business platform to be able to handle these simple tasks. I'm also not interested in saying, "Ok Google" or "Hey Siri" to make things happen. Voice-controlled integration is not high on the list.

I want to be able to turn lights on/off/dim from a PC/mobile interface both at the office and from home. If the interface could be html-based, we could load it on our phone system and that would rock.

I want the lights to come on when the first person arrives at the office in the morning. Not on schedule, but whenever they arrive. The same goes if everyone has left, I want to have the lights go off after a short delay.

Ideally, controlling the temperature of the office would be nice as well.

It would also be nice to be able to activate the front door maglock and trigger a simple, "open the door" led when the door was unlocked.

Ideally, these services would be triggerable on a local level without internet reliance. If the internet goes down, I don't want my entire automated office to seize up and become useless till it's back on.

I understand that most of what I want is programming, but I don't want to make the same mistakes I made in my home. I have Leviton, Lutron, Wemo, Feit, Wyze, devices (about 50 total) that are all constantly pinging their manufacturers and clogging up my network by hogging channels.

Not only that but every time the wind blows and the power goes out in my neighborhood, it takes me a good hour to reprogram all of the devices and get them attached back to the network. Some of them I have given up on because they would take a 15-foot ladder to reach. It's terrible.

So are these unreasonable expectations to have for a small office? Can anyone make any suggestions on how I can accomplish this? Any reasonable advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Rechargable Batteries?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 03:35 PM PDT

    Hi All!

Recently I found that my home automation setup is EATING batteries at an unreasonable speed. On its own I have no problem with that, but I hate having to dispose of batteries

I've got rechargable AA and AAAs, but does anyone know a good source for rechargable coin batteries - like CR2450s or CR2032s? Amazon doesn't have one rated well, and I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem

    Thanks!

    Under sink smart water shutoff?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 05:03 AM PDT

    Hi,

We live in an apartment (multi-family building) and we have some additional items installed than what came standard with the unit - dishwasher, ice maker/fridge water line, ventless washer/dryer combo, etc (all with permission).

Given these additional connections, we've been strongly considering adding water/leak sensors under the sink and in places where leaks might occur. But, for those times in the future when we may all travel again, getting notified wouldn't help that much if we weren't physically home to sort it out. So I've been looking for a smart/connected water shut off that could go under the sink where these are primarily connected. I don't have access to the whole apartment shutoff or that would obviously be the most straightforward option.

Has anyone seen something that could be used in this manner? The lines are standard 3/8" compression connections, if that matters (though I realize that converters could be used to reduce the fittings to the size needed). Any ideas, thoughts, etc would be awesome. I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks so much!

    Thermostatic Radiator Valves and Automation

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 03:05 AM PDT

In case this is significant - I am based in the UK.

I am working to automate management of the radiators in my home, and I am interested in finding TRVs which enable me to:

    • Open and close the valve remotely, and directly. Ideally, to be able to set the valve open position, so I can incorporate proportional control.
    • Read the temperature from the built in thermostat. This is not a necessity, since each room has a thermostat already.

Based on comments, I have bought some Drayton Schneider Wiser valves (WV704R0A0902), and these seem to give me the following capability (when driven through zigbee2mqtt):

    • Read the current temperature
    • Set the target temperature

While this doesn't give me direct control over the valve, I can regulate the target temperature relative to the current temperature to achieve what I want, based on knowing my independent thermostat temperature and my target for room temperature. I have one big hitch though. The valve seems to reset the target temperature itself to 20°C, after an indeterminate period of time (more than one hour?).

Can any of you recommend a better valve than this one? Like most of you (I guess) I don't want a cloud based proprietary solution - I am happy to go with zigbee, or wifi, or at a push, even bluetooth low energy. If any of you have positive feedback about these valves, I would also be happy to hear it! Perhaps I am doing something wrong?!

New house: Lutron and zwave or zigbee?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 04:01 AM PDT

I'm building a new house and after years of having zwave switches and smartthings, I'm going to go with lutron caseta — reliability and WAF are by far the most important. But I still want a network for all the misc motion and other sensors, so am looking at also doing wired outlets to create a mesh. It seems zigbee might still be a little more fickle, but is also where everyone is going. Also outlets seems less common. Any thoughts on the choice, or this whole approach?

    Best home automation system (Australia)

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 03:11 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm building a house and want to set up a expandable system ideally to control; Lighting (led down lights) on/off and dim, colour for strip lights. Ducted AC (temperature, fan, schedules etc) Blinds Security system Garage opener CCTV Voice control (Alexa, Siri, Alex whatever) Remote access (via phone app)

Main brands we have in Australia is Zipato, Fibaro , Control 4 and some smaller ones like My Home that don't seem as good. I was thinking of Z-Wave or similar connection to prevent slowing down the Internet bandwidth.

What is the best system for my needs? Experience reports would be great.
