    All smart light are unresponsive.

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 07:08 PM PDT

Sorry if this is the wrong place but my wifi is working fine on TVs, phones, consoles but for some reason every smart light in the house is unresponsive and won't turn on. What could possibly be the problem?

Moving to House with Ring doorbell and outdoor camera

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 06:00 PM PDT

So we're closing on a house that has a ring doorbell and outdoor camera with floodlights. How do I connect those to my Google home app? Do I need the sellers to disconnect the devices?

How would a smart plug turn on a space heater?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 05:12 PM PDT

I've never owned a smart plug, but how would it work so that I could schedule the space heater to turn on at 8:30AM? After the obvious step of plugging it into the smart plug, do I literally turn the space heater "on" before I go to bed, and the smart plug would then "block" it from actually turning on until the scheduled time of 8:30AM?

Smart locks with Tru-Lock deadbolt ?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 05:40 PM PDT

This is a situation where the existing dumb hardware is perhaps getting in the way of us updating to an automated aid.

Our exterior doors were installed pre-hung with Amesbury Tru-Lock deadbolts, which is a 2 point locking mechanism. It's a nice feature, but means that a regular deadbolt doesn't fit into the door.

I've tried two different smart locks, Alfred and Kwikset Halo. Unfortunately, while both wanted to work, but neither worked 100% to the point where I could consider them reliable, with slightly different issues.

Has anyone successfully installed a smart lock with a deadbolt like this? Any suggestions on which model?

Just installed the Eufy wifi door lock, my only issue with it is that it doesn't have a sensor (or it's not working correctly) to let it know the door is open, so it will auto-lock with the door open, then if someone tried to close it, it smacks the bolt against the frame. Anyone have a solution?

    Nest X Yale Lock help

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 06:06 PM PDT

I'm having some problems with the differences between several Nest x Yale locks. I can't tell which one has z-wave and which doesn't. I also thought a certain one doesn't have geolocation auto-unlock which I would like. Here are the ones I was looking at:

    R-YRD226-NR-BSP

    R-YRD226-CBA-BSP

Basically I want the Nest x Yale lock that has those two features as well as the key option. If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it.

edit: While I'm here I should mention I'm a new home owner and I already own a google ecosystem. I already have a Nest Hello, 3rd gen Nest Thermostat, minis for every room, and two 2nd gen nest hubs. I also have Phillips hue lights, but geez they're expensive.

I'm currently also looking for affordable suggestions for door sensors, water sensors, smart garage door, floodlights (I was looking at the Wassertein floodlights that work with Nest Outdoor cams, but I've seen some bad reviews) and I've been looking at the Nest Protect smoke detector.

Any suggestions for other useful smart home stuff would be awesome, thank you!

Garage door button (switch) that is “smart”?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 10:33 PM PDT

I have to replace the actual wall switch/button for my 2000 era garage door. The current button can turn on the light and open and close the garage door. It is wired to the garage via a low voltage cable.

I can not for the life of me find a smart button to replace it with. I would prefer ZWave or HomeKit so I can stay off some random garage door cloud and connect it to my self hosted smart home; if possible.

Does anything like this exist? All I can find are add one to the garage door motor but since I have to replace the switch due to it being broken I'd like a two for one. Thanks!

I need a good light switch that knows when there’s a smart bulb on the other side of it

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 09:26 PM PDT

Basically I want to have smart switches everywhere in the home so all my lights can be 'smart' without them having to be smart bulbs. I know this is a basic request, but I also want those switches to be able to talk to other devices in the room like smart plugs. And finally I really want them to know (by me telling it through the app of course) that the switch is connected to a socket with a LIFX or Phillips hue and knows not to actually cut power but rather just tell them to turn off or dim.

Using Caseta switches with home assistant to control WLED LEDs?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 01:36 PM PDT

I am about to start first home automation project, my plan is to put in strip led lights above my bedroom crown molding, controlled by nodemcu with WLED.

Can I use Caseta switches and home assistant to control those LEDs? I would like to create some fun scenes, like progressive light up for slowly waking up, moody lighting for amorous activities, ECT.

The only other lighting in the room is a ceiling fan on a single switch.

Or, should I wait for a zwave switch like inovelli red series switch.

I haven't bought anything yet, still making those decisions on ecosystem, I do plan on getting home assistant blue, and bond for fan control.

    Cheap ambient light sensors

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 03:27 PM PDT

Hi, I am building my own smart home system from scratch. One sub-system is lighting. I want the lights to turn on when the room gets to a certain darkness. I just need something that can give me a light level. I don't want something that actually controls the lights (like the PH one), my system will control the lights. If it could be as cheap and as small as possible that would be great because there will be one in nearly every room.

    Thanks in advance :)

Dual layer smart blinds or shades

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 04:29 PM PDT

Looking for a solution for my sliding doors. I have a balcony at my condo that's in a courtyard. My neighbors across from me are probably 25'-35' rail to rail. Right now I have vertical blinds and Im looking at replacing them. Are there smart blinds shades that are dual layer? Or kits to make dual layer blinds smart?

I'm looking for something that can be one layer to allow light in and still create privacy and a second layer for room darkening/black out. Window faces south so it gets hot in the summer as well.

I've also seen the vertical panels instead of blinds, is anyone familiar with those and are they too heavy for a smart system?

How should I charge my new robot vacuum?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 12:42 PM PDT

Just got the Deebot Ozmo 950 and it is awesome. I was wondering how I should go on with charging it. The bot goes to the charging dock automatically, but is it healthy for the battery?

I've always been paranoid about keepin phones or laptops charging overnight regarding the battery health. Worried that it will harm the battery over long period of time.

Logitech disabled/deactivated my Harmony Hub and will not do anything to re-enable it!

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 09:17 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I've at my wits end trying to deal with Logitech.

I've been using 3 of their hubs & remotes throughout my house, Living room, Gym and Hometheater.

I also have 2 'tube' style ShieldTV's, one in the Living room, one in the home theater.

I recently bought a 4K TV to replace a projector and was running into issues playing back 4K HDR material via PLEX. So I ordered a Shield TV pro to see if that rectified the problem and it mostly did.

Newest issue was that the Harmony Hub that had the 'tube' ShieldTV, refused to add the new ShieldTV Pro when it got to the bluetooth stage. I tried every step imaginable to remove the old shield, add/remove the new shield, etc to get it to work but with no luck, I would always get a 'couldn't connect' message on the new shield even though it could see the hub.

I tried both through the app on my phone and via the windows app on my laptop. One last attempt was to do a factory reset on the harmony hub and of course, just to make this experience even more of a pain, they flagged the hub and now the only thing I see is a message that the hub is disabled and to contact customer service.

After an hour on the phone and trying to get a rep to help, the only thing the guy said is that the serial number was reported and that 'it was a replacement hub' so it no longer works. None of that made sense because I had bought all 3 brand new from Bestbuy, none of them were replacement units and they all worked up until the point where I tried to do a factory reset on the hub.

I was told that they're going to send a note to some other department but I haven't heard back in several days.

With one hub bricked, I pulled the one out of the gym and tried the same steps, lo and behold, it added the shield no problem, the devices connected on the first try. (this is the first time I'm adding a ShieldTV to this hub).

I tried again with the other Hub that was in the living room, that already had a ShieldTV and once again, all the same issues. No matter what I tried to do, I cannot connect a different ShieldTV to the hub. Now I can't even re-connect the old ShieldTV!! It refuses to accept that one as well after it was deleted.

Now searching online to find solutions I've found several other people have had the same issue, looks like Logitech is bricking old hubs to prevent people from reselling them or just plain fucking over customers because they can.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/logitechharmony/comments/grxtye/harmony_hub_disabled/

    https://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/esiv9b/psa_to_harmony_hub_users_avoid_unnecessary/

So at this point I'm beyond furious, not only have I wasted hours trying to get their half-ass products to work, they're bricking their products randomly to force you to buy a new one.

So my questions are, has anyone run into this issue and was there a way to get their hub re-activated?

Is there an alternative to the Harmony Hub that is not made by Logitech? Right now I'm willing to drop a few grand on new remotes before I give another dime to Logitech.

    TLDR:

    • bought a new ShieldTV Pro to replace old ShieldTV tube
    • Harmony Hub doesn't like to add more than one ShieldTV and refuses to add 2nd Shield, even after deleting original device.
    • Trying a factory reset on the Harmony Hub gets it bricked (flagged and disabled) by Logitech and no longer works.
    • Logitech support tells me I'm SOL.
    • Now looking for alternative products, willing to spend extra and never buying a logitech product again.

Remote blinds control with Arduino (Portuguese)

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 09:14 AM PDT

In this video, our good friend from Portugal show us how to configure a system to open and close your home blinds using Arduino and Relays connected to your home network or third party network (cellular network).

Using simple elements such as the Arduino Uno, Ethernet module and relays it was possible to set up a system that allows us to control the blinds when we are not at home. For example, we can simulate that the house is occupied when we go on vacation by simply opening and closing the blinds as if it were a normal day. In conjunction with CCTV, this system works very well.

Home lighting automation with multiple loads and inputs

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 02:12 PM PDT

I have a home built in the 50's I plan on automating. It's wired very strangely, where all of the light switches are 24VAC momentary switches (3 wires, power, up, and down). These switches control mechanical relays that power the lights (120VAC).

I have about 30 loads (all lights) and 60 inputs (1 "on" and 1 "off" for each load). All of the wires run through the same box which offers me a unique ability to access them in a central area. That's about the only thing easy with this project.

Can you recommend a system that could handle this setup? I was looking at a "BRX series stackable PLC" but I want dimmer capabilities. Maybe TRIAC dimmers and a raspberry pi but I don't think there are anywhere near enough I/O pins.

Also, bonus points if I can write some software where the existing switches can control the dimmer (IE a "long hold" on my switch would trigger a dimming mode etc.)

Bonus bonus points if it supports running my HVAC system in the future

Can I programmatically adjust the brightness of my lamp?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 12:21 PM PDT

I have a lamp that consists of several LED-strips and I would like to control the brightness. The lamp already supports multiple levels of brightness but I would like to try to modify it so I can set the brightness continuously.

I've measured the LEDs to run at 139V on brightest mode and 124V on darkest mode. So my plan was to add an adjustable DC-DC step-down converter and use a microcontroller to programmatically adjust the voltage.
My problem is that I couldn't find a step-down converter that can handle 139 volts. And even if I had one that can, I would still need to physically adjust the potentiometer with a screwdriver right?

Is there another way to control the voltage of that the lamp feeds to the LEDs?
Or a completely different way to adjust the brightness?

    limiting amp to LED Strip

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 12:15 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am installing some LED strips around the house, i was thinking of buy one 60A 5v power supply so i can connect multiple LED strips, in the other day my friend told me that doing this might burn your led strips if they got somehow extra amp, so she advised me to install some resistance(yet, she asked me to confirm with people who have done it)

why i am buying big power supply? simply to save cost (is it wise?) so one strip will require around 100w and the other will require around 150w, so instead of buying two power supplies, I am thinking of buying one 300w power supply?

if my approach is not wise, what do you think i should be doing? Watt resistor?? or just do buy separate power supplies.

    thanks all :)

    Splitter Cables

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 09:41 AM PDT

I have long roll of soft white LED Strips. It is a 2 pin. I wish to split them. All I can see are 4 pin LED splitters. Can I just use the 4 pin connector on a 2 pin strip? perhaps connect to the first 2 pins? just wondering if anyone has done this. thanks.

    Robot vacuum recommendations please

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 09:24 AM PDT

    Cross Post:

The set of criteria I'm looking for in a robot vacuum does not seem to exist. Just spent the entire morning scouring reviews, Amazon, checking comparison videos, etc but to no avail.

    Mandatory:

    - Zone control system (this could be boundary strips, Wi-Fi mapping, Lidar, etc.)

    - No roller brush (I don't want to deal with tangled hair)

    - Economical (under $250USD or $350CAD)

    Would be nice:

    - Intelligent routing (rather than random patterns)

    - Swiffer/mop pad. Don't care about wet mopping, just want the floor to be wiped because there are so many types of particulate matter that just can't be vacuum (baking sugar, sanded polyfiller, etc)

Currently I have 2 robot vacuums by iLife. I think they are the A4 and V8S or something. They are functionally identical and only aesthetically different. I have been very happy with them, however, their lack of a usable zone control system is extremely tiresome. They came with these crappy little beacons you can place throughout the home that are supposed to send out beams, allowing the user to create virtual walls. But these beams are utter shite because they have unpredictable splaying and they bounce off walls and baseboards and end up forming weird hoops around the home that causes the robots to: a) get trapped and b) inadvertently cross into the forbidden areas.

Converting outdoor hue lights to low voltage

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 09:02 AM PDT

Has anyone here attempted to convert outdoor hue lights to low voltage?

I am putting in a low voltage lighting system at my house for some driveway, pathway, and a few spot lights. I would love to have the spots multicolor but I don't have 110v where they need to go and I don't want to run multiple cables if I don't have to. It would be nice to just tap into the 12v power line and feed the hue lights right where they need to be.
