My wife’s latest battle with voice assistants was hilariously awesome.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 08:12 PM PDT

My wife frequently has trouble with voice assistants understanding her phrasing. This evening was better than most. Getting ready for bed the following interaction happens... "Hey Google, turn the thermostat to 65 degrees" "Ok turning two thermostats to 65 degrees". She didn't intend to turn down the Tesla's thermostat, but whatever. She next requests Google to turn on her fan and her fan turns on. She next wants to turn off the bedroom lights but she can never seem to say turn off the bedroom lights. So she turns to me and requests me to ask Google to turn of the bedroom lights. She says "Tell the bitch to turn off the lights." Google is still listening and proceeds to turn off all the lights in the house, sending the rest of the house into darkness and annoying the kids. I am am still laughing at Google's malicious compliance.

Combination smart ceiling fan+light switches: Inovelli red questions

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 10:54 PM PDT

Is it me or is this product category extremely limited? The only popular options I can find are the Inovelli Red Fan+Light switch and the Treatlife combination switch which requires separate wiring in-wall for controlling the fan and light separately. The Lutron Maestro looks nice but has no smart functionality. Since the treatlife seems to have unintuitive UI, I am interested in the Inovelli but have some questions I can't find online.

    1. What are the dimensions of the RF receiver module? Will RF transmission still work if my ceiling fan is older and has a relatively thick metal housing?
    2. Can I place the RF receiver in the light switch junction box instead if I have separate wiring already (or is it too large)? Or even better, a way to bypass the receiver altogether? Seems like a hardwired version of the switch would be a nice product since there are so few other competitors.

    Dry contact to trigger switch

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 10:26 PM PDT

So I have an off-grid inverter and battery setup at home for power outages (there are many where I live, scheduled and unscheduled) and I want to be able to immediately (or as quickly as possible) trigger one side of the kitchen to switch off.

My inverter has a wifi data-logger and dry contacts. I thought about the data-logger route: Use HA/NodeRed or similar and trigger an action when running on battery. But I'm not sure if that would work so well because as far as I can tell I would need to poll the data-logger for the battery signal and realistically I can't poll it constantly. By default it only sends it's updates out every 5 minutes.

So I thought I could use the dry contacts. The NO contact closes as soon as the inverter runs on battery so that would be ideal, I can use that as the "switch" on a smart wifi module which can then trigger the smart plug to turn off. Ideally I'd also like to be able to "disable" the smart plug while the inverter is running on battery so those appliances can't even be turned on again until utility power is restored.

Where I live we have prolific Sonoff availability so that would be the best bet I think. On the inverter side for the "trigger" I was hoping to use something low voltage as I could try to pull the power required from the USB port of the inverter. Otherwise I could use a Sonoff Mini R2 and send the dry contacts straight into S1 and S2 and be done with it, but then I need to run a plug into the large cupboard where the inverter sits just to power it. For the appliance plug side of things I was planning to use a Sonoff Dual R3 when they become available here but while I wait I do have a POW v1 rated for 3.5kW which will work just as well, but "outside" on the multiplug.

Any ideas for the low voltage module to consider?

Is Instant ON/OFF with Lutron dimmer posible?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 10:07 PM PDT

Can I program the Lutron Caseta Dimmer Switch (PD-6WCL-WH) to instantly and fully turn ON/OFF the lights rather than the gradual brightening/dimming it does by default when the power buttons are pressed?

    Thanks

Connecting ESP8266 or ESP32 to DC Fan Controller

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 03:36 PM PDT

Connecting ESP8266 or ESP32 to DC Fan Controller

    Hi all,

BACKGROUND: I'm relatively new to Home Automation - started with Philips Hue about 3-4 months ago and now running Home Assistant with conbee II usb gateway in place of Hue bridge to use other zigbee devices. I also have a number of smart wifi devices flashed with Tasmota (power plugs, sonoff rf bridge and shelly 1 switches)... a steep but enjoyable learning curve.

Today I opened my DC wall fan controller curious if I could make it smart - turn on, on motion if humidity and temperature are above x or y. From the pictures attached I can see the 4 wires that run from the fan to the controller are:

    red - 5v yellow - tx blue - rx brown - ground

I might be over simplifying this but am I right in thinking i can solder these to a ESP8266 or ESP32 board with Tasmota or ESPHome running and send/receive the signals required to do the following:

    ESP32 ....................................>... Fan Controller -o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o--o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o--o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o--o-o- VCC.......................................>........ 5v GND.......................................>........ GND GPIO16(RX in Tasmota or ESPhome) ........>........ TX GPIO17(TX in Tasmota or ESPhome) ........>........ RX

My goal is to connect it to Home Assistant to :

    1. toggle swing on/off (move fan left <> right)
    2. turn fan speed up/down - 1.. 8
    3. turn fan on/off

The controller has constant LED lit provided its plugged in so I am making the assumption there is constant 5 volts from the red wire.

My last question - if the wiring above is correct or close to. How would one go about debugging the serial baudrate and data sent by the controller? Is the idea Tasmota console or ESPhome (with debug log enabled) will show me the commands sent when i press physical fan controller buttons and then the idea is to send the same payload using Tasmota or ESPHome using MQTT from Home Assistant?

    Fan model: https://www.fanco.com.au/product/fanco-dc-motor-domestic-wall-fan-white/

    Many thanks in advance!

What's the best way to add outside power for cameras and lights?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 06:20 PM PDT

I'm trying to see what would be the best way to add power under the roof eaves outside to add cameras, motion sensors and lights. I see several options:

    • add a couple of weather proof outlets (1 or 2 per faces) by going through the roof (not easy given my roof, almost no attic space)
    • pull a circuit all around on the outside by following the exterior of the house and add some weather proof connection boxes around
    • pull a POE cable all around the outside (would gain the ethernet part, but I'm ok using wifi)

    Any other ideas?

I'd like to have at least camera coverage of all the walls, and motion activated lights on the entrance, the garage and the backyard door.

If I can plug some xmas lights as well when comes the times, that'll be a nice bonus, but not the main purpose.

Has anyone gone through a similar project?

    Do I have neutral wire?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 05:51 PM PDT

    Do I have neutral wire?

Most smart switches state they need a white neutral wire.

In the attached pic, there's three white wires connected together in the very top right of the picture. I suspect these are neutral wires. They don't run to any of the existing switches. From what I can tell, they come into the box, are joined together, then run back into the wall.

Can anyone confirm just by this pic whether these are neutrals? This is in a condo apartment built in 2009.

    Noob question

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 02:04 PM PDT

    Hi all.

I'm renovating my first house (old house in Dublin from 1940s) and as such am running ethernet throughout for WiFi and stuff and trying to plan ahead as best as possible.

Recently came across Shelly products and would like to look down that route instead of Phillip's Hue. However I've never played wiring or raspberry pi or anything like that. Watched a couple of videos but not fully understanding parts of the process.

What's a good place to start? Should I be looking into electrical 101 stuff and work up or is it all very basic? Is EU wiring very different from US which is what the videos I've seen are?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated

    Conbee2 and link quality

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 10:03 AM PDT

I'm trying to fix signal issues with my Conbee2. It's connected to a NUC with a 2m extension cable. The best signal is seen in deconz when I hold the conbee2 a few feet from the wall of the room and pointed straight upwards. As soon as I try to put it some place that I don't need to hold it up in the air, the signal quality plummets. The only node that has consistently had good quality is a Samsung SmartThings motion detector from ~2014. Everything else (OSRAM flexible RGB strips) either have terrible signal or none at all and drop off the network.

My NUC and the Conbee2 aren't centrally located and I don't plan to move it to a more central location in the house. In fact it may get moved to an even worse location where my networking equipment will be centrally located later this year. Is there a preferred orientation for the Conbee2? Pointing straight up in the air? I don't know the radiation pattern for the antenna.

I'm wondering if I should buy an extender that I can centrally locate. If anything Home Automation adventures have taught me to buy hardware that I control the software on. I was thinking of the SONOFF ZBBridge and flashing it with tasmota or something else that gives me management control instead of what comes out of the box. Separately there is custom Zigbee router firmware to apply? Does it make sense to shoot for a Zigbee 3.0 product even though my coordinator and end devices are not zigbee 3.0?

    Update:

Now I'm just laying the Conbee2 randomly across my desk and the signal is like 5x better to the far away nodes.

    So finicky..

Smart colour change bulb flashes white before colouring when switched on

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 12:26 PM PDT

I have a TCP colour changing bulb that flashes bright white whenever it's turned on via the app, even if the colour option is selected. This is very annoying and TCP themselves have been pretty unresponsive in trying to fix the issue. It's the second one I've had and they both do this. It works fine if I just use the light switch, but I wanted to program if as a wake-up light so that's no help to me! He as anyone had a similar issue and fixed it?

Any service monitor if using devices from different brands?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 01:38 PM PDT

    Hi everyone

Is there a monitoring service that will allow you to monitor devices from multiple manufacturers? say hook up a RING doorbell, a Nest motion detector, a miscellaneous Z wave motion or fire/CO devices?

Sounds like though you can hook up z-wave compatible devices companies will only monitor their branded devices.

Best video doorbell that is wired and works with my existing chime?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 01:37 PM PDT

I currently have a video doorbell (skybell) that is wired and works with my existing chime, but its super slow and after motion, only has a 30 second recording time before going into a 15 second cool down period. It also misses motion a few times.

From my own research I can only see the Nest doorbell as the only option that fits these requirements but I figured I'd ask around before limiting my options.

    Thanks

Phillips Hue Bridge for more than 50 devices?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 09:50 AM PDT

So I have exceeded 50 devices with Hue (I have a problem, I know). I have multiple bulbs, smart switches, scenes, etc. I decided I needed an extra Bridge to run the extra devices. Unfortunately, Phillips seems to make this very difficult. If I want out of home control each bridge needs to be tied to a different email address (which seems so dumb) and the bridges can't communicate with each other.

Does anyone have any ideas for a different bridge that will control all my devices? Or is there an app that will give me better control over both bridges, PLUS giving me out of home control?

Simple, affordable setup for wireless dimmer switches?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 05:20 AM PDT

I just moved into a new apartment, and the lighting setup is not conducive to getting a toddler to sleep. To fix it up I'm trying to (on the cheap) do this:

    - Replace the lightbulb in her room with a dimmable light and remote switch

    - Replace the three lights in the hall with either dimmable lights on a remote switch (all are currently on one switch) or control the three lights separately.

Currently there are no dimmer switches, and this is an NYC apartment so I can't replace anything hard-wired (or I'd just put in some lutron dimmer switches and dimmable bulbs).

    TIA!

Amazon Music to Soundavo matrix controller from Android phone?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 11:09 AM PDT

I was initially looking to get the Monoprice matrix controller/amp for setting up some in-ceiling speakers in my house but recently came across the Soundavo amp instead here - https://www.soundavo.com/collections/wifi-streaming-system/products/ws-66i

My biggest question though is whether I could stream from Amazon Music using this device. Most of my music now is using Amazon Music on an Android phone via bluetooth to some speakers. It looks like it has streaming services built-in, but none are Amazon Music. However, it supports DLNA and AirPlay, but I'm not sure if I can use those directly from the Amazon Music app to the Soundavo from Android....does anyone know whether this would work?
