    Wall tablet support

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:17 PM PST

I'm in the process of doing a kitchen Reno and have always wanted an iPad fixed to the wall to control my HUE setup and SONOS.

I feel there is much more that can be done with a wall tablet than running two apps.

What kind of set up are you using for an all in one screen dashboard. - tablet - dashboard app

Please share a photo as I'd love to see your set up.

I plan on running mounting it to the wall and doing POE.

Do you also have the display on at all times? Does that not ruin the battery?

    TIA

Can Alexa access the flashier Sengled transitioning lighting effects?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 10:57 PM PST

I know it's more vanity than function, but I like the rainbow color transition effects Sengled bulbs have when activated through the proprietary app. Alexa seems limited to only accessing very specific singular colors. Is there a way to get Alexa to tap into these flashier functions, or am I at the mercy of waiting for the apps to catch up to the function (if they ever do)?

Experience with Hunter Douglas Motorized Shutters?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 10:37 PM PST

Looking into making the jump to automated shutters with a new construction home being built. The only ones I've come across at the Hunter Douglas Palm Beach shutters. Does anyone have an experience with these? Curious on the reliability and overall satisfaction with them.

Also, if shutters aren't the way we end up going, does anyone recommend any other types of automated shades that look nice?

Flo by Moen - use with computer UPS?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:59 PM PST

I have this shutoff valve installed in a seasonal home. My internet modem and router are connected to separate UPS's to allow internet access in the event of a power outage. Moen sells a very expensive battery backup. Has anyone tried to use a normal computer UPS instead? I don't think the Flo valve consumes a ton of power, a UPS should be able to turn off the valve (at least once). I'm concerned that in the event of an unexpected storm, I may want to turn off the water remotely, after a power loss (no power, no heat - avoid frozen pipes). Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks.

Refrigerator door sensor with alexa compatibility

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 11:44 PM PST

I want to stick a sensor on the refrigerator door so I get an alert every time its opened. I also want it to trigger an alexa routine to do stuff.

Which sensor do you recommend for me? The sensor has to allow for a gap cause the refrigerator metal has one.

I have a fire cube and eufy indoor cams right now. I'm hesitant to get the eufy sensors as I'm finding eufy doesn't actually integrate that great with alexa and I don't want to buy a separate hub (indoor cams don't use hubs).

    Thanks.

Glowing ceiling (with changing colours) and automation

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:40 PM PST

    Hi!

I am about to start renovate a new apartment I have just bought, and when considering lightning setup I am very keen on trying to implement idea of "glowing ceiling". Basically it's a lot of adjustable LEDs on the ceiling with stretched pvc over them. And when turned on, it gives an illusion of a single white glowing ceiling.

    https://preview.redd.it/njscw9mande41.jpg?width=2362&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40246c9e30c1b01d5d0cb03dfd7c8907edce1d91

Ideally it would be possible to automate it via home assistant or something similar (I do not have experience with any home automation platforms) so, i.e. it would change the color based on time outside, etc.

What equipment I will need for this and what do I need to prepare in advance for this setup? Leds, smart switches, bridge? Any concrete products appreciated as well.

Hopefully the question is not too vague as I stated I do not have any experience with similar projects!

Retrofit lamp for Z-Wave (RGBgenie ZW-4001)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:44 PM PST

Does anyone have experience retrofitting a lamp with the RGBgenie ZW-4001 to add Z-Wave control?

    Product page: https://rgbgenie.com/?product=z-wave-plus-micro-controller-and-lamp-module-single-channel-trailing-edge-dimmer

One of the main draws is the switch input so local control over the lamp state (on/off) can be maintained. The lamp I am looking to modify has a touch switch instead of the rotating kind on the socket. Will have to replace the switch, but that is no biggie.

    Thoughts? Experiences? Better alternatives?

    I miss tasmota.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 08:40 AM PST

tuya no longer using esp chips on their cheap devices. I bought 4 tuya bulbs that previously had esp, but these newer ones were realtek chips, and just got a LED controller that I didn't really need but wanted to get it before they stopped making those with the ESP chips, and that came with a non esp chip as well.

was so nice when cheap stuff just easily converted to local control with little effort (my soldering skills have greatly improved thanks to tuya).

I guess for me now it's just a matter of waiting till some chinese manufacturer realizes that there is a market for low cost local control devices and fills that need, I'll be waiting with cash in hand.

    Question about door sensor

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 02:17 PM PST

Hi all I have bought two Tuya Smart Door Sensors. I plan on using them to check if doors are open or not. Here's what I want to achieve: If a door stays open more than 5 minutes, I'd get a notification/text message/whatever.

I tried doing this with the Smart Life app, with IFTTT, with Alexa, but I haven't been successful yet. Can anyone help me?

Hue Lamps vs Hue Bulbs, when they age

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:20 PM PST

If i fill up my house with hue Lamps, i have to replace the whole lamp if it falls in 10 years?

As i understand, the hue Lamps doesn't have bulbs.

Might be wiser to go with bulbs, but they aren't as bright as the lamps.

    Wi-Fi LED Controllers with PWM

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:51 PM PST

    Hello /r/homeautomation

I've been tinkering with automating my home for the past Year now, initially started with HomeAssistant, and after some frustrations and compatibility issues, migrated over to OpenHAB, and have been quite pleased with it. Installed Smart Lightswitches and Dimmers in several rooms (TPLink Kasa Brand), have several handfuls of smart plugs...

Although I also have a few 12V LED strips mounted behind a couple Monitors/TV's to provide the backlit ambient lighting when the outside light drops below a certain threshold and will come on automatically, and turn off when OpenHAB detects my AV Receiver has been powered off, although I was wondering if anyone could suggest some Wi-Fi enabled Dimming Controllers (that hopefully ship to Canada)

    Niceties:

RGBW would be nice, although I'll happily accept a single channel/White-Only controller as my current strips are Warm White Only, but having the option would be nice.

    Requirements:

It needs to have a high PWM Frequency, as I am sensitive to flicker, and my current controllers I basically have either Off, or On, and don't dim them since I get immediate headaches from the 60/120hz flicker that I can detect off them. (1000+ Hz or more 5-10+ KHz would be ideal.)

The current ones I use, which again work for basic on/off, are along the lines of these, https://www.amazon.ca/Sumaote-Controller-Compatible-Assistant-Dimmable/dp/B07JC3L4Z6/ which use the 'MagicHome' app for initial setup, although have quite poor diming.

Was just hoping for suggestions, as I can find plenty of Wi-Fi controllers, but that don't have any mention of a good PWM frequency... Or I can find plenty of PWM dimmers, but without any Wi-Fi connectivity. https://www.amazon.ca/High-Speed-Dimmer-12V-40V-Switching-Frequency/dp/B06WLP8PF8

I should mention that I have a combo zwave / zigbee dongle so I should good to use any products that work with those protocols if required if not Wi-Fi. It would just be great to have more variable options than just On or Off, especially when slowly fading lights up over a certain period.

    Thanks for your time!

    Failsafe?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:22 AM PST

I bought a home and am ready to take a deep dive into all things HA. One hard requirement I have is that everything should be operable if the wifi or HA controller goes down for a long period of time (i.e. sell the home).

    Things I'm wondering about:

    • security cameras should still record
    • Locks should have a key backup
    • Sprinkler systems should revert to their typical daily schedule
    • Shades and blinds should be manually operable and relay state
    • Lights should be controlled from a switch w/ dimmers
    • Garage door should still have remotes
    • Thermostat should work offline

What is everyone using to accomplish this? For light switches it seems like a Shelly wifi switch could do the trick, possibly with dimming as well. I don't know what happens when these fail because they haven't connected to the WiFi for a year though.

Decent 100w LED bulbs that are available in California?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 10:29 AM PST

I've been looking for some decent buzz free LEDs (100w, 3000K) that are available California. I've read that the Philips are the best but it seems the 3000k are not available due CA law around Title 20.

I have some Cree 100W A21s and they buzz pretty bad (not to mention they have terrible lag).

Note: using them with Caseta switches, hence the relevance to home automation since I imagine people will be as picky with buzzing as I am.

Non-switch "switch" to control smart floodlights?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:58 AM PST

All, I just bought some Eufy Floodlight Cameras to replace the regular floodlights I have at my house. After installing the first one, I realized that I forgot that the power to these lights is switched in 3 places (4-way switches).

Minimally, I realized I need to just hard-wire all those switches, but I was wondering if there's a way to have a ZWave "switch" that is just really a button that I can automate? I'd like to have the ability to turn on all the floodlights with a switch like I can do now.

Does anyone have any suggestions for an approach to this?

New Homeowner looking to start automating my home.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:35 AM PST

    Hey all,

Total newb around here. We just purchased a new home, and we are looking at making it a smart home. from the doorbell to the indoor lights, music, and even individual rooms. I know this is going to take some time, so I am wanting to learn more about automation, and how to get started. The house already has a google nest thermostat, and we own a google mini. I thought about sticking with google, but I haven't found many things that connect with google that are not google produced. Any advice and guidance are greatly appreciated.

Want to get rid of Vera and get something easier and more compatible with Alexa.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 02:16 PM PST

So frustrated. Our Vera controller is just junk. The interface to control it is garbage. Scenes don't always work. Zwave device state is not being reported correctly on the UI. Just crap. Is there a home automation hub that is compatible with Alexa (easily) and that has a better interface and scene creation?

    Lustron Caseta Dimmer

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:54 AM PST

So I have an issue with a new place I moved into. It has a caseta dimmer connected to an outlet. I need to plug other things into the outlet (charger, clock, etc). I turn the switch off, obviously everything loses power. But even if the switch is on, and I turn the lamp off manually, everything else also loses power (I'm also not using the dimming feature). Is there any way to fix this? If nothing else I'll just take out the lustron and put in a regular switch
