Should I have any considerations when trying to automate my home outside US using US products?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:19 PM PST

Hello everyone, I recently descovered the world of automation and I'm very exited to give it a try. I'm planing on bringing most of the tools needed to my home country. I will get an echo dot, a light strip that works with alexa, a smart lamp. I dont think I cant bring a light bulb because we use 220v here. I live in Uruguay btw (it's in south america), so, are there any products that only work on the us or something? Also, why do I need a hub when I already have an echo dot? I'm planing on using and old laptop as a hub and installing home assistant on it but I dont really get the benefits of using it.

Smart thermostat for high voltage electric hydronic in floor heating system

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:03 PM PST

I'm probably going to have to contact an electrician for this, but figured I'd ask here. Many smart thermostats I've found are for low voltage systems only and the ones I've found for high voltage systems are meant for electric baseboard heaters and not in floor hot water systems. Has anyone here had luck getting a smart thermostat for this type of heating system?

    Lutron and Alexa - Disconnected!?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 08:05 PM PST

Using Lutron and Alexa for years, never had an issue. Recently I had some work done in house and they flipped the breaker to the wifi/routers/hubs. When they turned back on everything was fine with most of my smart home stuff, EXCEPT the Alexa and Lutron were no longer connected.

I disabled the skill and when I went to enable to Lutron Connect skill, I get an error message that says "You must add a Home in your Lutron Connect App"

In the Lutron app there appears to be a home, I've changed the name several times, but no luck.

The Lutron lights work without issue from the Lutron App and work without issue via Hubitat.

Any help getting Alexa back on?

Doorbird D101S - Anybody know the connector type/name it uses?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:50 PM PST

I've purchased a used Doorbird D101S and it didn't include any cables.

Does anybody know the name of the connectors so I can possibly crimp/make my own?

Looking for a door contact sensor that has an API I can use to read its data.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:20 PM PST

Right now I use yolink door sensors, but their dev portal seems like a dead end (I haven't seen any examples of their API I could get to work), and the only way my code can see whether the sensors are opened or closed is to have an alexa routine turn a kasa smart plug on and off when the door is opened and closed, and have my code poll the kasa plug through its api.

This is an extra step that presumably makes my script less responsive to the door's state changing, and requiring an extra device makes the setup more expensive and less reliable.

Do any of you have a favorite (hopefully reasonably priced) door contact sensor that has an API you can hit? Ideally with a Python wrapper, but I can write my own if need be.

    Thanks!

    Simple Commands and Google Home

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:04 PM PST

I've gone through all the directions on adding SC to Google Home. I added it as a Works With Google and logged in through GH. But SC never shows under the Linked Services list.

Tried unlinking through Google Assistant and then readding through GH. Still nothing.

    What am I missing?

I'm trying to make it so I can open my MyQ garage door using voice. If I go to the SC app I can control the garage door and even text it to open and close. It just won't integrate with GH.

Adding automation to a crank roller shade?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:12 PM PST

Looking to get a (outside) crank roller shade to cut down on light in my living room when watching movies on the projector.

I'm generally aware of automation guides that are readily found, but what I'm specifically most interested in is a solution where the motor is an option in addition to the crank. Presumably I would 3d print a little gear box? So that either the rotation of the motor, or manual rotation of the crank, can be used to raise / lower the shade?

edit If there is a way / type of stepper / brush motor that will not turn into a generator & feed electricity back to the wall outlet, then it doesn't matter if the hand crank turns the shade && the motor. Simplest is best.

Replace regulator for 220v exterior led to wifi/zigbee control

Replace regulator for 220v exterior led to wifi/zigbee control

    Hi,

The previous owner of my house set up exterior LED lights under the railings. I like it a lot, but if I want to turn them on I have to go outside and turn it on. I've been looking online for new regulators that support wifi/zigbee or even IR, but I don't find much.

The lights are 220v, and connected to the mains. I find a lot more for 12/24V LED strips.

Any suggestions? In the end I want to control them via Home Assistant.

I've attached a picture of the current regulator for the light strips.

    Thanks.

Camect - Any feedback from current users?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 10:42 AM PST

I'm reading the Camect support forums as there doesn't seem to be much info on reddit, and it seems like its good but not ready for prime time, just wondering if anyone has some thoughts on this vs. Blue Iris.

I've been a long time blue iris user, but to me it always feels like its unfinished and there have always been a couple of things that bother me about it that either isn't fixed or theres a long tedious way to get around its shortcomings.

I've used a couple of solutions but wanted to see what this sub's thoughts are and if there's anything ya'll would recommend i try.

I live in Queens NY just outside of manhattan, there's lots of busy foot traffic and some raccoons and stray cats and i noticed that BI misses a lot of this. I also have a business that I use Blue iris with. Both my house and my business have a mixture of inside and outside cameras from a variety of manufacturers

    Things I've used/Tried:

Netcam Studio: I haven't used this in MANY years, but it was terrible and it pretty much drained all my PC resources and ran terribly.

Security Spy: This was actually really good (if you have a mac and are on the apple ecosystem), i was living in an apartment at the time and was running a mac mini as a server, it had an appleTV app as well as phone app. My only issue with it was cost, macs already aren't cheap, they had a full system overhaul a couple years back and required current users to re-purchase (16cams for 450, unlimited for a G), I cant justify paying so much, especially since apple is going through a huge hardware/software change, paying another 500 bucks only to have to upgrade again later on is just not cost effective. Also macs aren't the greatest servers (also ran Plex and some other services).

Blue Iris: This is probably the software i used the most,, There's a lot to love and a lot to hate. Its cheap and pretty good for what it is but the list of grievances for me are growing. It's runs pretty easy on resources and pretty much any RTSP/ONVIF camera takes seconds to add. my biggest issue is that the default settings are not good, there's a list of stuff to change when adding a new camera or else it eats up all your resources, default sensivity and pre-record setting miss a lot of things and need to be tuned a lot before its right, theres no secure way to setup remote access, So i'm left with VPN'ing into home to access my cams, even after setting up HTTPS, only the login is secure, not your streams. and object detection is not so good, especially on higher res cams.

Camect looks really promising (at least according to the advertising), does anyone have any experience with it? how does it compare to BI? does anyone know of any other comparable software?

Zwave On/Off Switch recommendations for use with switched receptacle/outlet?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 08:29 AM PST

I'm looking to swap out some switches in my house with some Zwave ones, and am looking for some recommendations on switches that will work for my use case. A portion of the rooms in my house have switches that are wired to control to an outlet, instead of a built-in lighting fixture. I'd like to replace these with Zwave switches to retain the existing functionality, but provide the option of adding in smart plugs to toggle lamps throughout the rooms as well, and not be tied to only using the outlet wired to the switch. I feel like that would be a common use case, but maybe I'm going about it the wrong way?

I've had good luck with Zooz stuff in the past, so was initially looking at their ZEN21 On/Off Switch, but it notes that it is not to be used in this manner, so now I'm wondering if that's common of Zwave/smart switches in general, and I need to come up with another solution, or if it's specific to these switches in particular. They do note that their ZEN30 switch can be used for this by wiring the relay part of the switch to the outlet, but I'm not really a fan of that solution. I don't like the idea of having a double switch, as it's not intuitive to someone that only one switch controls an outlet which may/may not have a lamp connected to it, while the other switch may/may not toggle other things (depending if it's set up to toggle smart plugs or not, for instance).

Thanks in advance for any help, insight, and recommendations!

nest protect and hard wired smoke alarms

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:58 AM PST

I have to replace all the smoke alarms in my house and I want smart ones. I am looking at the Nest Protect g2.

My house has hard wired connected detectors right now. I have a couple issues though... For one, since the nest has its own mesh, do I need to replace these with the more expensive wired version or can I just get all battery ones (in the interest of saving money. We have 3 stories and 8 detectors) Can I just cap off the wires and use the battery version?

If I can't, or I decide to wire the bedroom ones and battery the rest, will they still talk to each other?

what is the benefit of the wired over the battery? I know the battery "phones home" less often than wired but how does that affect every day? Will I still be able to communicate with the battery ones via the app when I'm not home?

Lutron Caseta & LED Flat Panels

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:17 AM PST

Does anyone know of any flat panel LEDs lights that work with Caseta? I'm looking for a 2'x2' flush-mount fixture for my gyp-rocked basement ceiling. From what I've been seeing, these seem to need a specific type of dimmer switch.

Smart light switch & motion sensor

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:50 AM PST

First time posting in here, and would appreciate any help!

My husband and I just bought our first home, new build. I wanted to make the canned lights in the kitchen/breakfast area smart, but the types of lights they are is making is pretty difficult. I thought it would be changing a light bulb, but they're disc lights, and it would take some major attic work to do it.

I digress. My idea now is to change the light switch that controls the 6 lights in the kitchen to a smart switch, that was Google or Siri can control it (I have both, mostly Google, though). My ideal plan would be to have a separate motion sensor that can trigger the light switch to turn on the lights in the kitchen. Though, not a switch with a sensor built in, as the placement would be tricky cause my cat is near the switch a lot and he would trigger it.

    Does this make sense?

Help with electronic locks for double doors in new home.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 11:48 AM PST

Buying a new house soon and it has a double door entry which Ive never had before. It also currently has full plate handle sets on each door. We are wanting to get the touchpad locks as replacements but how do i go about getting one with a matching simple handleset for the other door? Assuming only one of the doors or the main door is the one that will have the keypad. There doesn't seem to be a whole package set out there for electronic locks for double doors especially for ones with full plates or am I just not googling the right thing to find them?

    Tablet Interface

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:21 PM PST

Hi everyone, I'm new to home automation, I am an industrial automation engineer though so I understand most of it.

We are remodeling our kitchen and I decided to put in smart lights - I got some innoveli red smart switches as well for the dumb lights we have in our home that I will be putting in over time.

The lights I have are https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F2BP9PK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They run on the smart life app, which looks like is compatible with smartthings.

I also have two samsung smart TV's and a samsung smart hub so I'm hoping to find a tablet solution that works with smartthings also. The tablet is also a samsung galaxy tab a7.

What is the best all around solution, nothing too complicated, I don't want to go writing code, but able to customize the screen to show what I want would be nice.
