My porch light turns on when I order food from Grubhub

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 04:00 PM PST

Just got this automation working and figured I'd share.

    • Screenshot
    • Uses node-red-node-email to receive notification emails.
    • When it gets an email from orders@eat.grubhub.com, it parses out the restaurant name from the subject (I'm not doing anything with this yet, but could be useful to send notifications to other devices).
    • Turns on my light via zwave2mqtt
    • Turns it back off after 2 hours (I thought about having it parse out the estimated arrival time from the email and turning it off based off of that but... that's too much)

I have a gmail filter that forwards emails from orders@eat.grubhub.com to a separate inbox (just to keep things separated from my normal email). The basic email node polls for the most recent email, which is fine if you have low volume of emails, but I went a bit overboard and setup [poste.io](poste.io) in a docker container that receives email for @mydomain.com and routes them to my nodered container (the email node package has a node that runs its own smtp server to you can get emails pushed instead of polling)

Can a raspberry pi 4 run multiple systems?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 12:49 AM PST

I'm trying to find out if i need to buy 2 pi's for my projects or 1 is enough.

I want my house to be able to run some version of home automation software. Not shure which yet but `Home Assistant` is very likely. Other considerations are openhab or domoticz. However i also have a 3d printer on witch i want to run octoprint. Can i host both on 1 pi? Or do i need 2 ?

AC fan compatibility with Inovelli Fan switch

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 02:27 PM PST

Hello, I'm trying to purchase a low profile 42" or 44" AC fan that is compatible with the Inovelli fan switch. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out if I can use a fan with it. Do fans that already have a remote work? Seems like I need something that can be controlled at the wall and has pull chains.

I wanted to get this fan, but I think the remote makes it not a good candidate

I'm really struggling to find a product, I need a nickel colored fan for a small bedroom 10'x11' that works with Inovelli.

Looking for Doorbell Camera that can remotely unlock door (apartment buzzer)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 05:03 PM PST

    Hi Folks,

I've done a bit of research but haven't found any concrete answers. I am looking for a Doorbell Camera such as those offered by Ring.com which would allow me to see and interact with people at the door. However, I would also like to be able to open the door through the App. The thing is my current system uses an intercom with a button which when held down activates a door buzzer allowing the door to be opened. This is very common in most apartment buildings.

My thinking is that there would have to be a controller separate to the doorbell which is connected to the Wifi and can close the buzzer circuit when a command is given to open the door.

I am wondering if there an existing solution that can be purchased or if you guys have any ideas of DIY solutions that can be put together using an Arduino or other controllers.

Looking forward to hearing your answers.

Home theater automation - possibly a Logitech alternative?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 04:48 PM PST

I'm looking into getting a Harmony Hub, but I'm now reading that Logitech requires you to have a server-side setup, ie: login and password to use it. I'd rather do something more local.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to have features similar to the Logitech Hub - one button to turn everything on: a Denon receiver, a TCL TV, an ODroid, switch to the proper inputs, and be done with it.

My question is, as simplistic as that is, what are my options? I've explored a bit of Home Assistant, but is powering on and off a device something it could do?

Any input is welcome. You guys are crazy hardcore, and I feel like my humble request almost doesn't belong here.

    Thank you!

    Lutron vs The Field

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:32 AM PST

I'm the guy who recently ripped all my smarthome gear out of my home in preperation for a move. Most of my equipment is Zwave, but I also use many Shelly wifi relays for lighting.

    Thread here:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/l3phpu/today_i_lobotomized_my_smart_home/

Many of the comments and suggestions in that thread sang the praises of Lutron Caseta and suggested putting many of those devices in for the new setup. Some of my Zwave devices are older and the GE/Jasco ones have been prone to failure. I'm looking for a little more detailed feedback about the Lutron system, potential uses for Pico remotes, integrations with Home Assistant, etc.

I expect to end up with a blend of various devices. For example, motion sensors and door locks are much cleaner in a Zwave environment. That said, what are some of the cooler applications of Lutron and what are the major advantages over other ecosystems?

    Led light strip

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 07:08 PM PST

Hey so recently bought an led light strip for my home (Govee 5m RGB led lightstrip) lesson learnt the hard way as far as buying them cheap because annoyingly they glow when "turned off". I know it's the controller leaking a few MV after it because as soon as I unplug the controller it stops being lit. So it's a standard 4pin led light strip setup anyone got any advice on what controller I should get or should I bin the whole setup and get a different one? It needs to be Google home compatible too! Cheers!

    Broadlink RF Controlled Fan

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 07:34 AM PST

I have a ceiling fan with a light and fan controls. It doesn't report it's status because it is just cloning the RF remote which means if it is off and I try to use a goodnight routine it will turn it on.

Is there a way to get around this? The only thing I can think is to add a smart switch to the power switch and turn it off there.

Shutting Down a PC on a Schedule (Ideas please)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 06:15 AM PST

Edit: Wow, lots of good discussion here.

For the TL:DR:Sleep - uses SOME power (some people say 5-15w), it's minimal when compared to when it's on. I'm going to pass on sleep though.

Hibernate: Basically shutdown (~3w), system state on HDD. I like this option, but I think I'll just shut it down.

Shutdown: (~3w), a good shutdown is the method I'm going for.

Effort #1: Just going to have Windows Task scheduler do an hourly check after 5PM with a timer of 10 minutes. Annoyingly I'd have to open a cmd prompt.

Effort #2: I'd rather use an app, seems like there's some out there that more or less just shut it down like option one, key thing here I wanted was an option to delay. (Similar to how Windows asks for update installation.) So, I think i'm not going this route.

Effort #3: Get fancy with HomeAssistant and have Node Red watch my room, send a notification to my phone, if no response, send command to PC to turn off. (Honestly now that I type it, probably not as hard as I think.)

So, I'm going over my electric bill and want to start saving some energy.

I've got a big PC that I run my Blue Iris server on, so it needs to stay online. However my personal computer, I don't need it to obviously.

So, I know I can use task scheduler to shutdown my computer every day at a specific time. That part is easy. But I was wondering if there's other ways you all accomplish this.

It's easy to do this via a my Hub/Home Assistant for lights and stuff, but trying to find the best way to solve the following:

Problem Statement: Typically, I do not use my PC after 5PM daily M-F. So, that's easy with a shutdown /f /s /d 600 via Windows Task Schedule, but the problem is.. I want it to be interruptible and or delay-able. (Maybe I'm working late or playing a game, etc.) It'd be nice if a box popped up with 3 options Delay 5, 30, 1 hr or something, but I want it to check again at that time. To see if i'm still around.

Weekends are an issue, as I may be up in my office from 5AM to 8AM then leave, so being able to setup a different daily schedule would be nice.

I see this Wise Auto Shutdown app, but was wondering if anyone had any apps the recommend? I'd prefer to it locally on windows vs using HomeAssistant.

HomeKit, Phillips Hue, and Eufy outdoor camera

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 06:14 PM PST

I'm new to home automation and while it seems most of yall are way over my head with your abilities, I have a question for any HomeKit experts.

I'd like for the Phillips Hue outdoor lights to turn on at night, when the Eufy cameras sense motion and stay on for like may 5-10mins. I feel like this is doable using HomeKit, but I'm not able to get it working.

    Is this possible?

Or, would I need to instead, buy a few sensors and have them do the triggering of the hue lights? If I would need to buy triggers what triggers would you suggest that would work with Phillips hue light and be water proof for outdoor use, and or also work with HomeKit?

    Thanks in advance.

    Suggestions for Home Server Setup

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 02:12 PM PST

    Hello Homeautomation!

I am trying to set up a home server to include Home Assistant, Plex, and Blue Iris. I'm not too strong when it comes to linux, but willing to learn if that's the best path. My initial thought was to run it on an i5 or i7 NUC running windows 10. Do you fine people have any recommendations for hardware or configuration. If you can link any resourses for learning more about setting this stuff up, that'd be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Cannot get smart switches to work (description in comments)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 05:42 PM PST

unwillingly taking the plunge into home automation (espresso machine no longer turns itself off) which ecosystem ? looking for : UL certified, with use monitoring for automatic turn-off, wall receptacles, light switches, and "smart plugs"

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 05:25 PM PST

    good evening,

my lengthy title says most of my question.

starting from zero (other than two shelly 1's that i went with because they're UL listed for installation inside a junction box) and wanting to have a single interface to control a multi-generational home.

my only requirements are : UL listing, availability of receptacles, light switches, and the little "smart plugs" for the occasional thing that needs some smarts. and the ability to turn off outlets based on how long they've been running... which i assume means i'll need power monitoring.

hub, no hub, don't care. i get the impression that having a hub is more expensive but better in the long run (?) so opinions on that would be welcome too. does a hub mean the smart devices will work w/o internet connection ?

do any products support a "turn this thing off after it's been running for X minutes" control ?

it looks like only TPlink and topgreener offers UL listed equipment, and receptacles ?

    any advice appreciated :)

How to power a wall-mounted tablet

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 09:50 AM PST

Hi I plan to add a wall-mounted tablet (Android) which runs HomeAssistant. What is the best way to power this? I am in the UK.

I need to plan the wiring so I am guessing I need a normal electricity point with some kind of transformer so I can connect the tablet via USB right? What are the best ways to cover the wiring so only the tablet shows?

I was also thinking if I could power the tablet via a POE injector? In that case, how would it work, I just drop a cable and buy some kind of device which connects the the ethernet port and outputs a USB cable to connect the tablet with? Is it possible to use the data as well from the ethernet cable or I can only use the power and still connect the tablet via Wifi?

    Thanks for your help.

Anybody have experience with these smart LED brands? Are they any good? I’m looking to buy some smart recessed lights but the ones the electrician installed have this odd connector (seen in 3rd pic). Can’t find any familiar brands that make this.

    SOS Button

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 05:01 PM PST

Looking to buy an SOS button from aliexpress that operates over WIFI which connects to TUYA.

    Something like that

TUYA WIFI SOS Smart Wireless Sensor Alarm Elderly Waterproof Emergency Help AU m | eBay

Or if anyone knows of a google home compatible device similar to this?

Was wanting to know if there is a way to use this or something like this to either connect directly into google home, or via Tuya, smart Life, or even integration through IFTTT so that if the button is pressed in the middle of the night, that the google speakers in the house could make an alarm noise or even play a song ?

    Cheers
