I'm very excited for these. Smart Motion sensor/Dimmer/Switch. Would they be appropriate for every room or just common rooms.

    Secure Voice Setup

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 06:08 PM PST

I am just getting started in setting up some more automation. Before I get too far into things I need some advice on security. Do you have a preference for voice assistants such as Alexa, Google, Apple? I would prefer to keep everything as local as possible and not allow someone to have access to my routine. I know Amazon had some security concerns and I don't know that it is much better. I want to avoid "big brother." Anything helps!

    Redo - Fresh Perspective

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 09:01 PM PST

Moving soon, currently have done a poor job and looking for improvement.

current: 2k sqft, 2 floors, nest, ring, hue, google, echo, schlage locks, ISP provided wifi...just piece mailed and looking to get a more unified solution.

Future: 3k sqft, 3 floors and debating.

I have been looking at Eufy for numerous smart devices, but an EEro Wifi and starting to walk through this process when it occurred that I am just repeated the same mistakes. What is the best way to part ways with the past and start over with a unified system?

Hoping for some ideas to limit my future mistakes.

Any advise is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Toilet sensor

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 03:11 PM PST

Hey, I'm relatively new to home automation but have a particular idea in mind...

Has anyone used a ultrasonic wave detector to sense when someone is using a toilet? I'm looking for a sensor that can tell when my kindergartener uses the bathroom to remind her to flush and wash her hands (I'm constantly flushing behind her). I'm thinking I could connect the sensor to a sonoff SV and attach it to the ceiling above the toilet. When she gets off, it could trigger a reminder through a wifi/Bluetooth shower speaker. I was thinking it could also be used to turn on the vent fan if someone is in there for more than a minute (I plan on adding a sonoff with humidity sensor to trigger the fan for showers as well: this would make it fully automated).

Any thoughts or tips? Or is there a better way? I was thinking I could use a PIR sensor, but she tends to play in the bathrooms as well (playing with makeup, styling her hair, bathing Barbie in the sink, etc). I thought this setup would be better for sensing the toilet specifically, rather than the whole room, fewer false reminders

    B-Hyve Sprinkler losing WiFi Connection

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 03:26 PM PST

I've got a B-Hyve sprinkler timer that I'm generally satisfied with. My only problem is that periodically it loses its WiFi connection and needs a power cycle (off/on) to reboot and restore the WiFi connection. This happens about once per month.

It's not really a big deal when we're home, but we travel a lot and can be gone for up to a couple of months. I'd rather not have to have someone come over to reboot the timer.

I'm thinking of adding a smart plug that would power off the timer every day for a few minutes and then turn it back on again. This would reboot it nightly. I'm thinking there shouldn't be any problems with this approach, but was wondering if anyone has tried something like this. TIA.

Dimmers everywhere? Bathrooms? Finishing smarthome conversion

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 04:44 AM PST

TLDR: the main question is around bathrooms. If converting the switches, do I use dimmers?

Smarthome project started 4 years ago with Wink and only converted 8 switches to smart (GE zwave). Just moved to Hubitat and motivated to finish the switch conversion job while we're stuck in the house during the cold. ha. I just counted and have 14 more switches to do, and 3 of them are two-way!! I have a box of switches I had previously purchased but need more.

Anyway, since I am replacing more switches I am leaning towards going heavy with dimmers. Just in case.

I like the idea of setting a morning mode so that lights are on but dimmed, including the bathroom.

    • Bathrooms: This is the most controversial one. Should we have dimmers? I like the idea of getting up early to go to bathroom and not be blasted by bright LED lights. But how practical is it to use? We have the GE rocker switches so if it were 100% dim from last night and this morning I want dim, its tap-tap-tap to reduce. I think with hubitat some logic could be put in around that "if before 6am set to 30%". Or a named morning mode activated from Alexa.
    • Dining Room: YES. No dimmer now, and too many times I want to dim. this wasnt done before as this is the one (double) switch in the house without neutral. (I am going to fix this, this weekend. Or then hire an electrician if too challenging.)
    • Living Room: the LR we dont really use but makes sense to support dim. also on that no neutral switch
    • Bedrooms: We dont have dimmers now. Just makes sense to have them. obvious I guess. We have LED bulbs in the ceiling fans and can just be way too bright.

    Any thoughts/comments are appreciated!

The left most switch is connected to the bathroom fan. Do panels come where one has a switch with timers? Or what’s the best way to do this?

Smart lock that can auto lock when the door closes (NOT ON A TIMER), supports google assistant, and has a keypad

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 08:37 PM PST

Here's the dream: I come home, I unlock the door with my phone, or I enter my code on the keypad. The door unlocks, I walk in, I close the door, and it locks behind me. If I need to unlock the door for a friend, I just tell google to unlock it.

I don't want a lock that auto locks after a set amount of time. I want it to not extend the deadbolt if I leave the door open, and instantly lock when the door is closed. A timer will not work for me

My smart home is currently mostly nest/tp link kasa, so I currently don't have a zwave or zigbee controller. I'd be willing to buy one if necessary

Solution for Bedroom lights? (no built in ceiling lights)

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 08:26 PM PST

Hi folks, I'm very new to Home automation. Moving into a new place and my bedroom has zero lighting built into it. There is 1 light switch which controls power to 1 outlet, and thats it! (Edit to clarify, I have plenty of other outlets, just only 1 switched outlet)

I purchased a new Hubitat hub as I wanted something self contained and not reliant on internet, so I didn't go with Smart things, but also didn't want to go full blown into Home assist.

So, I'm trying to figure out the best way to get a few lights into the bedroom to all controlled by the 1 light switch. My plan was to get a GE smart switch, and then a few lights either using smart bulbs, or connected to smart switches. Are there certain bulbs or smart switches I should go with to work with Hubitat?

Any other recommendations that I might not be thinking of?

    Question about Shelly relay

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 03:32 PM PST

I have a question about the Shelly1 Relay and thought someone here might be able to answer. My Parents have two low voltage doorbells installed in their home that are connected to a hot water re-circulator. When you push the button it starts circulating hot water to the bathroom so when you turn on the shower you don't need to waste a lot of water and wait for several minutes before you get hot water. Their problem is that the button is in the bathroom on the other side of the house. I would like to be able to automate this somehow. Would I be able to wire up the shelly1 to this doorbell and use it with the app, google home or the shelly button to activate? I'm new to this low voltage stuff. But it seems like a pretty straight forward solution.

If anyone has any other ideas I'd be open.

    Thanks!

    Tunable white smart bulbs.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 12:59 PM PST

What is everyone using for tunable white bulbs. I am looking for a good price as I'm doing my kitchen with has 14 bulbs.

My goal is to be able to tune to cool white for cooking but due to open concept turn them to warm white while relaxing at night and in the mornings. RGB isn't important for these.

All fixtures currently take A19 bulbs. I am also located in Canada so products available in candad would be preferred.

    Smart lock without wifi?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 08:34 AM PST

My wife and I bought a house. We have about 2 weeks between closing and move-in. During that time, we anticipate having contractors come in and out for some jobs. I want to install a smart lock on our door to easily let anyone in remotely using my phone.

My wife works from home, and until we move, we won't be able to move the modem and router from our current place, and we don't want to get a new set either. I found out about locks that support z-wave, but realized we'd need to buy a separate z-wave hub (does that need to be connected to wifi?). We're already in the Amazon Echo universe and don't really want to use different types of hubs.

What's our best option here? Should we just go old school and get a lockbox for our key for the contractors for the time being, then look at installing a smart lock when we move in?

Cheap Z-Wave or Zigbee Relay Module for DIY Thermostat Project

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 09:16 AM PST

Both my workshop and my garage remain unheated most of the winter. But sometimes, when I've got projects going on, I like to use the in-floor hydronic heat to take the chill off. You know, maybe get it up to 40° or 45° F. Most thermostats don't go that low except for a few "garagestats" but I feel this is an opportunity to get into home automation. Ultimately I'd like a Home Assistant based setup where all 5 heating zones in my house are controlled with a DIY thermostat. What I'm looking for is a low cost, low voltage AC relay that can communicate via Z-wave, Zigbee or another protocol that Home Assistant can control. I like the Sonoff form factor but I don't think that's really a relay but more of a switch. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I've also found other relay boards that can be combined with a transmitter/receiver but I'm not sure if that fits the bill either. Anybody have any suggestions?

Phillips Hue still the best "Bulb" out there?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 11:49 AM PST

I know Lifx and Ikea has some options, and Hue is pretty expensive....but is it still probably the "best" option out there?

My main concern is congesting my wifi network, but i've heard with Hue this is not a problem. Also I am worried about Hue removing functionality etc.. (But I am guessing thats unlikely since they are a pretty big player in the smart home sphere)

    Thanks!

Vivint - turn off the sensor notifications?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:37 PM PST

I've seen a few Vivint questions here, so hopefully this is the right place for this...

I have a Vivint security system, and it's... fine. One of the major issues I have with it is that if a sensor's battery dies, or if it just stops communicating with the panel, the panel will notify you with an audible notification. It does this even if the panel volume is turned all the way down. Does anyone know if this can be disabled? I've got access to the installer mode and poked around, but nothing jumps out at me as an obvious solution.

Within the installer mode, there are a couple options under the sensor ("Reports", and "Supervised"), which seem hopeful, and they're currently both turned on, but I can't find any documentation about what those options do.

    Anyone know?

Automate Office Light with Outlook Calendar

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 07:39 AM PST

I currently have a Lifx beam outside my office door which I can change from red to green with a flic button at my desk. This tells my family if I am on a meeting or not and therefore if it's safe to walk in.

What I'd like to do is automate this to sync with my calendar via Outlook 365. I've seen there are API syncs I can do with Google Calendar, however our company restricts syncing our professional calendar outside of the approved software.

    Any ideas?

Sonoff Mini R2 and a complicated wiring setup (UK) Help Please

Sonoff Mini R2 and a complicated wiring setup (UK) Help Please

    Hi All

I have large light on my landing and a little light in my hallway. I really wanted to make the landing light smart. I bought a Mini R2 and cracked open both light switches, the upstairs one has no space behind it, my down stairs light switch has space but looks a mess and I cant seem to figure out how on earth I could get the Mini R2 working with this.

The landing celling rose is about 10 ft high on some stairs so not practical for me to mess about with that, so was hoping to have an in switch solution.

Both lights are connected to more than one light switch.

Here is an image representation of the what I found behind the switch. Your help is much appreciated thank you in advance for taking a look.

    Doorbell Camera/Hub Options?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 07:44 AM PST

I feel like when it comes to choosing a doorbell camera you almost are somewhat committing to an ecosystem, however I also hate the idea of having like 5 different apps and would ideally like most of my stuff to be centered around one ecosystem (Whether that's nest or whathaveyou).

I really like the Nest Doorbell camera, and most reviews say it's the best as far as "quality". But their subscription fee puts me off a bit. And also as much as I like google stuff....I am a tinkerer (and using homeassistant you sort of need to be) I always feel like they are quick to remove API's and such from a lot of their devices.

Also google is pretty well known for killing a lot of its products.

So that sort of leaves the ring doorbell. But generally it just doesn't seem as well reviewed.

There is also Eufy and Arlo, but do those work with any of the Hub/Video screens? Not to mention that's ANOTHER ecosystem I am adding.

Basically I am just looking for recommendations when it comes to a Doorbell Camera w/Video Screen (or Hub or whatever you want to call it)

    Thanks!

Few questions about Bosch Smart Home

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 07:06 AM PST

Hi there, I am about to buy quite a few devices from Boschs Smart Home System and was wondering about the following:

    • What happens, if I use HomeKit and set a logic there that contradicts with a logic set in Boschs system? E.g. "set temperature at 5pm to X" + "set temperature at 5pm to Y".
    • What protocol does Boschs system use to communicate with its devices? Our apartment is on ground level but we have an office in the attic (separated by four floors) connected through powerLAN. How do I connect Boschs devices there?
    • What information and which functions do the following Bosch devices expose to HomeKit?
      • radiator thermostate
      • door/window contacts
      • smoke detectors
      • twinguards
      • rolling-shutter devices

Many thanks for any answer in advance!
