Before buying - Is there any way to have Ring trigger a routine in Google Home? Posted: 14 May 2020 10:04 AM PDT I'm sure the answer is no but it's worth an ask. I'm trying to have a routine for making the doorbell become a visual cue in my room. I have a couple Google Homes, Chromecast, and some smart bulbs/strips. I've got some medical issues that make visual cues significantly better than audible ones. Thanks for any help. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 May 2020 02:01 AM PDT Hi, I have a google home routine which shuts off lights, smart plugs and makes sure the TV etc are all off. Recently I have found some windows have been left open when I come down in the morning as the weather is getting warmer. Is there a smart window sensor that can link with my google home routine, so that when I run it Google will announce "you have left the kitchen window open" for instance when kicked off before bed? Thank you [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 May 2020 07:07 PM PDT Hi all, This might be a bit of an odd question, or at least a bit of a different take on home automation, but has anyone here created or knows of the existence of a good home inventory system? I'm thinking of something that I could use to track household supplies such as cleaning supplies, baby supplies, etc. That way whenever you take something out of storage you can keep track of how many you have left and know when to buy/re-order more stuff. TIA! [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 May 2020 06:30 PM PDT I just purchased a 3700 sq ft home with a 1000 sq ft finished basement. Every room has Lutron Maestro switches. The entire home has small, designer recessed halogen bulbs. At night it looks like a museum. It is approximately 3700 sq ft and has an addition 1000 sq ft finished basement. I'm trying to put together a thoughtful home automation system and want to do it right from the start, and not hodge podge a bunch of random stuff (Unless it can be artfully integrated) Here is what I have so far: 1 Echo Plus 1 Echo 1 Echo Dot 2 Schlage Encode WiFi smart dead bolts Lutron Caseta controller and 1 dimmer (We have interior walkway lights throughout the home, the switch is in the basement equipment closet. It was inconvenient to turn them on and off each day, so the first purchase was the Caseta and they are set to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise. 50+ recessed halogen fixtures The entire home is wired with speakers, 2-4 in each room. We have identified approximately 4 pairs that we want to utilize. They all terminate in one location. Here are my objectives: Power the speakers and allow them to play Apple Music/Spotify/Pandora, with each pair being able to play its own source. Automate lightning scenes. With 20+ Maestro 4-switch panels in the home it's overwhelming to remember + configure all the lights manually. Install a video doorbell Install 2-4 cameras Ideally I'd like a way to control everything from one interface. I have a good friend that's an AV dealer and has access to Crestron and Savant, but I'm hesitant because A.) It's expensive and B.) Seems like overkill and also I don't love the idea of having a system that requires a licensed technician to work on/configure. Look into replacement options for the halogens. We love the light color/quality, but don't love the heat output + power consumption. I'll take any suggestions you all have, be it for individual components or big picture automation ideas. Thanks all. [link] [comments]
Kwikset Obsidian vs Yale Assure Posted: 14 May 2020 04:14 PM PDT I move into my new home in a month and naturally the first thing I'm changing is the locks. I'll be pulling the deadbolt and would like to put in a Key-free smart replacement. This will be the first of many smart home addons I do. After the movers are gone, I'm installing two EcoBee thermostats. Light switches, occupancy sensors, and cameras will soon follow. [link] [comments]

Movie lighting with an Amazon Dot? Posted: 14 May 2020 08:31 PM PDT So I'm very new to this, so excuse my ignorance! I'm in a basement with 2 separate areas of switched lighting and I want to be able to use an Alexa Dot to be able to vocally cue something to the effect of "movie lights" to turn off one of the lighting areas, or all of them. What lights would you recommend, or other hardware do I need in terms of lights and any advice on how I begin to program it? [link] [comments]

Humidity control with Sensibo & Google Home Posted: 14 May 2020 08:09 PM PDT Hi all, I live in a very humid client and have been automating my AC units with sensibo and google home. So currently I have these two subroutines but they're not playing well together.
The issue is that they often step on each others toes. Mainly I need the second routine to only act if I'm away from home and not on the network. This keeps all my electronics and wooden instruments healthy as well as takes care of mold issues. Climate react can publish to a webhook so it seems this is possible but I'm lost on what framework to use. I'm a programmer and have a raspberry pi laying around that could be a server that can keep track of the "I'm home" state. Would love any pointers on frameworks I can use to detect webhook calls from the sensibo and IFTTT frameworks, run some logic on them, then publish back to ifttt to automate properly. How do those energy monitoring smart plugs compare with a Kill a Watt? Posted: 14 May 2020 04:22 PM PDT Hey all, my kill a Watt broke and I only use it for the Watt consumption feature to check items around the house and to find those vsmpires. Accuracy isn't essential. I was wonder if the smart plugs which monitor power usage would be a good replacement for me instead of buying a new kill a Watt? Are they sensitive enough to pick up 1 or 2 watts? Overall experience with them? Can they handle 1500watts? Thanks a lot. [link] [comments]

Need help deciding which 3-way z-wave plus (or zigbee) wall switch pair to get Posted: 14 May 2020 07:25 PM PDT I would like to replace my current dumb 3-way wall switches with smart wall switches to be used by home assistant (I have both z-wave or zigbee controllers). Which 3 way wall switches would you recommend (preferably ones that come as a pair)? I'm not even sure if it's possible only to replace only one of the wall switches with a smart one... or, I need to replace both. PS: I noticed that some rocker wall switches have a "spongy" feel when switching on and off. I don't like that kind. I'm looking for something that you can feel when you switch it ON/OFF [link] [comments]
Best way to connect a temperature sensor with Greenhouse? Posted: 14 May 2020 03:37 PM PDT I want to put a temperature/humidity sensor in my greenhouse. Ideally I would like to be able to ask Google what the temp is in my greenhouse. I would prefer not to have to access a different app, but not sure if that's possible. I have a nest thermostat but I wasn't sure if the nest sensor would work for this. Another option seemed to be the Aqara sensor, but sounds like I would need the hub to connect it to google. Also not sure if google would actually tell me info from the Aqara sensor. Either of these options seem better, or is there another way? I'm also open to using a separate app if it would give me more functionality in terms of what it would do. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 May 2020 07:22 PM PDT I can't run an HDMI cable, so I need to presumably do it over wifi. wasn't sure if there was some app that existed for TCL tv's that I could install on the TV, or any other kind of home server situation. I am willing to buy a third party USB device but I was trying to avoid that just so I could do this like, asap, and also not have to spend any money. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]

Second robot vac for second floor Posted: 14 May 2020 06:10 PM PDT I currently own a Roomba 980. I'm happy-ish with it, though from my research it really doesn't have a ton of features that would be nice to have, such as LIDAR, useful mapping, etc.. I'm moving into a new house. The first floor is 680 sqft and a combinatin of hard wood and tile. The second floor is 680 sqft and mostly carpet, except the tile bathroom. What robot vacuum would you add, and which floor would you assign each to? I'm thinking keeping the Roomba upstaris because the bedrooms will be less "cluttered" with obstacles and an S5 or something similar for downstairs where I may want to draw no-go areas once the maps are made. I was turned onto these after reading a few posts I read in here. I don't be pursuaded by mopping, as that is of little concern to me. I'm a single-person household with no pets and rarely wear my shoes in the house, so the floors don't get as dirty as they do dusty, crumbs falling on the floor, etc. Thanks in advance for your suggestions! Do the GE/Jasco Zwave switches need the add-on switch? (3-way) Posted: 14 May 2020 01:23 PM PDT Or can the be used with the existing dumb switch? Or MUST you have the GE add-on switch installed too? [link] [comments]
Recommendations for LED Strip that works w/ Smart Dimmer Posted: 14 May 2020 05:30 AM PDT Hey All, I live in a Condo apartment with Concrete ceilings but I want to add a normal light fixture to the ceiling in an area with no electrical running to it. I settled on adding a false ceiling in the area so that I can mount a fixture to the new center of the false ceiling -- something similar to: https://imgur.com/a/8TYEkA3 I also want to add Dimmable LED strips to the edges of the false ceiling, similar to how they've done it in the picture. Ultimately I want the LED strip and the normal fixture to both be controlled and dimmable by a standard Smart Dimmer switch on the wall (Lutron, etc). Huge bonus would be that the LED driver is directly hardwired if possible.. I'd really appreciate any recommendations for what I can use to get this all wired properly (LED strips, driver, etc.)! Help needed testing my Sonoff and SmartLife web interfaces Posted: 14 May 2020 03:44 AM PDT Hello, I made web interfaces for Sonoff/eWelink and Smart Life/Tuya devices, at https://smartathome.co.uk/sonoff and https://smartathome.co.uk/smartlife respectively. At the moment they can only turn things on and off, as I only have a smart plug and some light switches to test with. Not sure there's a massive use for them, but if anyone wants it, it's there, and if anyone wants to help develop more capabilities, let me know! [link] [comments]

Z-Wave 3-Way Smart Switch + ??? GE/Jasco Embrighten Posted: 14 May 2020 10:31 AM PDT I've installed some GE/Jasco Enbrighten Z-Wave 2 way dimmers in my home and they are fantastic. I now want to get to replacing some hall-way 3 way on/off switches but am lost on exactly which models of switches I need. As an example, there's the GE 46201 3 way on/off: https://www.amazon.com/GE-Enbrighten-SimpleWire-SmartThings-46201/dp/B07RRBT6W5/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1CJ083X7QKH6C&dchild=1&keywords=46201+zwave&qid=1589477289&sprefix=46201%2Caps%2C225&sr=8-1 With non-smart 3way switches, you just get two three way switches. So for installing the second switch in the three way, do I use another GE 46201? Or do I use the "Add On" GE/Jasco 46199 Switch: https://www.amazon.com/GE-Enbrighten-SimpleWire-SmartThings-46199/dp/B07RQ8K25S/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3Q0FZ1DHPTLGV&dchild=1&keywords=46199+ge+add-on+switch&qid=1589477451&sprefix=46199+%2Caps%2C221&sr=8-1 Same question for the dimmers.
