    MyQ is ditching Wink

    Posted: 13 May 2020 02:19 PM PDT

    Dear valued myQ® User,

Effective June 1st, 2020, you will no longer be able to use your myQ garage door opener from the Wink® platform. You will, however, still be able to monitor and control your garage from the myQ App (as you can do today).

Starting with nothing but a Linux box

    Posted: 13 May 2020 10:31 PM PDT

I have a Linux box that I installed Home Assistant. My intention is to get a few things for the house, mainly some motion activated security lights, and maybe a camera. I'm sure I'll expand the list over time, but I need the lights. Instead of getting the stupid ones, I'd at least like to know when they're coming on. What I don't know, and I'm having trouble figuring out, is what additional hardware I need to talk to these things. Since I'm running HA already, I don't need a hub? But I see a lot of hubs like Hubitat talk to everything, but I gather it doesn't interface with HA, but needs to run on it's own software? I see SmartThings also talks to a lot of things, but not into cloud solutions. I'm trying to absorb this stuff, but I'm missing some pieces.

Is this too many contact sensors?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 11:38 PM PDT

Just bought a new home, have a kit with 6 contact sensors and was going to purchase 10 more to cover all my windows / doors (first floor and second floor with roof access). Now I'm wondering if this is overkill?

My front door has a ring pro doorbell, do I really need contact sensors on the two front windows to the study or will just the front door suffice?

Same with my dining room, 3 windows and patio door. There will be a camera on the exterior already capturing anyone that enters the yard before they ever reach my windows... contact sensors on all 3 windows seems like overkill to me, maybe just patio door?

I may be mistaken and unable to think of a reason to have so many so wanted to see what everyone else does / thinks? Do I really need contact sensors for windows that are already monitored by exterior cameras?

    Light switches for EU

    Posted: 13 May 2020 10:46 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I am currently renovation my apartment and I will need some help with the light switches selection. I am not in to smart automation yet but I decided with this renovation to start with light bulb and switches.

Now, I read many reviews and apparently, when it comes to EU (220V) the choice is somehow limited compare to product available for 120V US. I need smart light switch with the following:

    - Works on 220V, EU standard

    - No hub required (preferably)

    - Dimmable

    - Integration with Google Home

    - Reasonable price

Any advice will help me a lot.

    Thanks ;)

    Apartment Intercom

    Posted: 13 May 2020 12:11 PM PDT

    Hey,

I want to turn my very dumb apartments intercom system smart so that I can open it remotely (and maybe more down the line). I think I'm fine on the control side of it (relays etc) I'd just like a sanity check about if any of the wires in the case are deadly/240v! Could someone help me out please?

It's "BPT AS C/200 (Later Model)" as listed on: http://www.intercomsrus.com/intercom_handset_finder_tool.htm with wiring diagram etc. (Not the picture showing on the post, that was automatic!)

    Thank you!!!

    Notification for mail slot

    Posted: 13 May 2020 10:39 PM PDT

We have a spring loaded vertical mail slot on the front of our house it's made of heavy bronze. On the phone side their is very little clearance around the door, maybe 1/4in max.

Any way you can think of putting some time of wireless contact sensor on it to know when the mail is delivered? Worried their isn't enough clearance for anything bulky, and that the bronze will interfere with most magnetic based sensors.

Jomato smart bulb not working in other room

    Posted: 13 May 2020 05:46 PM PDT

Hi, I've got 2 Jomarto smart bulbs in my flat. One is in the living room which is the same room as the router and works fine, the other in my bedroom which is probably about 20 feet away always disconnects, any reason for this? I've switched the 2 around and still bedroom one is iffy. I was thinking about getting a Hue Bridge to see if that would help, anyone know if the bulbs would be compatible?

    Thanks.

I need a mailbox sensor to help catch a thief red-handed

    Posted: 13 May 2020 07:54 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I've had my mailbox broken into a few times now, unfortunately, the mailbox is in a shared location with no security cameras.

I'm thinking that a wireless motion sensor of sorts could ping me when there's movement: either new post being added, me picking up the post or the thief breaking into it.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't know what kind of sensor would be useful for this.

Any advice would be welcome. :) Thanks!

    Posted: 13 May 2020 04:25 PM PDT

I just got a smart watch and, as I was getting the mail, I had an idea. What if I could install some type of lever on the inside of my locked mailbox to open it via my smart watch? Anyone have any ideas on products used to accomplish this? Maybe some type of arduino kit?

Edit: mailbox is similar to the one in this image... https://images.app.goo.gl/MZZ6WpNHpHBCvQKi6

Smart Switch to control LED strip lights or get new lights?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 02:21 AM PDT

Hey guys! I have some 10+ year old Ikea LED Strips installed behind my TV as bias lighting. They worked great when I had a slightly smaller TV, but installed behind my 55" they don't evenly light the bottom or the corners. They are currently operated by a physical switch, I would like to install a z-wave/zigbee plug, and have them automatically turn on/off with the TV (not sure how I can do that though).

Alternatively, would be open to getting a new set of lights that provide better coverage. Not looking for multicolor at all, just white (I assume 5000k). I would like for them to turn on and off with the TV as well. Would be cool if I could program them to fade in/out on power on/off.

Will be using a Smarthings hub. if that makes a difference.

    Whole Home Audio Help

    Posted: 13 May 2020 06:20 PM PDT

    Hello!

I close on my new home in two weeks, and will be new to the automation world. My home does come with a Qolsys Panel powered by the Alarm.com app, Honeywell Z-wave Thermostat, Qwikset lock, Eaton Z-Wave light switches and a Skybell doorbell. Not married to this system at all just what comes with the house.

I am looking to put in some kind of whole home audio system. Sonos is just more than I am willing to spend so looking for smart, potentially DIY, solutions.

    • I am thinking of installing in-ceiling speakers in different zones of the house
    • Would love to not have to run speaker wire through the ENTIRE house, but rather in a single room/zone to a single source in that room (closet in the rooms and media closet in living room etc)
    • If I do go the wired route, should I look to power these with single zone amps or is it better to run the wire throughout the house and power with a single multi zone amp?
    • Want to run this from my iPhone/iPad with hopefully ability to have this voice controlled also
    • Must be able to stream Spotify
    • Must be able to sync audio throughout the house
    • Would like the ability to play different songs in different zones but this isn't a dealbreaker

Is there a solution that fits my needs already? Is trying to set this up with alexa devices a good option? Raspberry Pi's? I am super new to this and am not an audio expert by any means. Any basic level information you can provide is surely appreciated.

    Thanks!

How do you automate RGB LED strips that come with an IR remote

    Posted: 13 May 2020 07:09 AM PDT

I'm sure many of you have one of these cheap little RGB LED strips. They come with a thin, 24 button IR remote to turn them on/off/set the color. I'd like to integrate them into my system somehow.

I'm open to all options, but would prefer to get them on my MQTT bus, so something along the lines of EspEasy or Tasmota might be best.

Low Cost Outdoor Wireless Contact Sensor for gate door recommendations? Don't have zwave or zigbee hub...

    Posted: 13 May 2020 12:47 PM PDT

    Hello All!

Looking for a low cost way to add a contact sensor to my side gate to alert me if it was left open to avoid the dog accidentally getting out.

I'd like it to be able to integrate it into homeassisant. I currently dont have a hub and all hardware I have is currently wifi connected. I thought about a z-wave dongle for my raspberry pi but don't have a huge need for it aside for maybe this contact sensor so I'm holding off.

I've looked into the WYZE contact sensor & STITCH contact sensor (monoprice) but not sure it would last outdoors as it's not made to be used outside. The gate is about 20 feet from my access point so it doesnt need to be super long range.

    Thanks!!!

    Sengled Hub

    Posted: 13 May 2020 10:28 AM PDT

So, I just installed a Sengled Hub to control all of my house lights. Yes, this is a temporary/cheap replacement for Wink. Anyway, so far so good. It actually works MUCH better than expected (about on par with Wink). That being said... Are there any other products that people have been able to control with the Sengled Hub, besides Sengled lights, outlets, and motion sensors?

    Recommendation for power monitoring?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 01:54 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a power monitoring solution, something like the Sonoff POWs / plugs that allow to see how much current/voltage/wattage is being consumed. I want to be able to connect these to an OpenHab instance for monitoring and simple things like turning on/off on a timer.

The Sonoff POW R2 looks good, but also looks like it might need a bit of tinkering to get to work properly with OpenHab, like flashing Tasmota which looks like it gets more complicated as new versions of the device come out.

Anybody have any recommendations that have worked for them? Preferably European recommendations for things like outlets.

    I appreciate the help!

    Dropping Wink, novice automator questions

    Posted: 13 May 2020 06:13 AM PDT

I have Bali automated roll shades and some sengled automated lightbulbs that I have voice-control of through Alexa. The blinds are connected with the Wink hub. Since the subscription requirement for Wink was announced I have been trying to find a new device to control the blinds. I'd like something that can control different types of automation connections such as z-wave and zigbee. I'm looking at Hubitat and was hoping someone here could tell me if it will work with the blinds and if there needs to be anything else connected to make it function properly.

    DVR Software Options

    Posted: 13 May 2020 07:20 AM PDT

What are the best options for DVR software? (No cloud or subscription)

I have Wyze cams and a nest doorbell cam. I basically just want alerts for movement and the ability to turn some of them off when I'm home, and some of the notifications from some.

[UK] Should I start again or not?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 04:11 AM PDT

So currently I have the following setup:

    Smartthings v2 hub

Numerous Xiaomi no neutral wall switches (dual and single)

Couple of Wireless Xiaomi wall switches (dual and single)

Numerous Xiaomi door / window sensors

    2 fibaro behind socket relay

    Amazon Dots/ shows

    Sonos play 1

    Logitech Harmony hub

    IKEA Trafedi Wall plugs

    Eufy robot vacuum

Ring view doorbell and 2 x ring external spot lights with cams.

    Warmup 4E underfloor heating thermostat.

I have cobbled the system together slowly over the years. My wifes main requirement was that things were to remain simple. Hence the Xiaomi switches, these allow me to use normal light fittings and bulbs. The switches also continue to work if the hub falls over (never happened to me). Our use case is pretty simple, using our voice to control lights, turn the tv on/off etc and the wall switches to all remain operational.

Average 4 bedroom house split over two floors.

For the most part things work, but I do have some niggles that are bugging me:

    1) I dont think my zigbee network is "strong" enough. Devices such as the Trafedi fall off the network as does my curtain rail / and some of my door / window sensors. I was under the impression that the Wired wall switches would act as repeaters, and they are fairly well spread in the house.

    2) The Xiaomi wall switches dont play nice. Example; I say to Alexa, "Alexa turn off the Green Room light", the light will turn off fine, but alexa warns me that the light didnt respond (switch states in all apps is fine". However if I have a routine setup with the same device e.g. "Alexa, Green off" which turns off the green room light and the trafedi wall plug in the room. I have no issues what so ever (well assuming the plug hasnt fallen off the network again". This seems to happen to the dual switches on one channel (though one dual switch works perfectly) and to my single switches.

    3) The curtain DHT doesnt record state, and I cant use Alexa to voice activate their opening and closing.

When setting up I did make some "mistakes" which I only found out about after the fact:

    1) My light switches have metal back boxes

    2) I have a little mdf board, with some ceiling roses, when setting up a new switch I would do this in the room with the hub, rather than doing this in the room where the switch would live.

    3) I have lots of experimental DHT's which are no longer in use.

    4) I cant flip my WiFi to 5GHz only as the harmony hub doesnt support 5GHz band.

Given Covid and WFH, I was thinking this might be an ideal time to finally sort this all out.

My options outside of learning to live with it:

    1) Factory reset the ST hub and start again. This time ensuring that I place some trafedi plugs though out the house to build a solid zigbee network. Before adding the individual devices in situ. Wouldnt solve my curtain issue and no guaranties that this will sort out the unpowered devices falling off the network regularly.

    2) Replace the ST Hub with a Hubitat Elevation, again starting with the plugs to build a solid network and adding devices in situ. I havent researched the DHT's for the Xioami devices, so no idea if this would fix my curtains. Again no idea if this would bring stability to the Zigbee network.

    3) Replace the ST hub with a RPi running Hassio and a zigbee stick, again starting with the plugs to build a solid network and adding devices in situ. Ive only tinkered a little with a hassio docker, no idea how custom devices are handled or if my Xioami stuff will work or not. Again concerns about the Zigbee network

    4) Add a Xiaomi hub into the mix, along with a Hassio RPi. All the Xiaomi devices would be paired to the Xiaomi hub, which in turn would expose the devices to the Hassio setup. I dunno if the Xiaomi hub will pair with the IKEA plugs though to form the back bone of the Zigbee network. If I paired the plugs to the ST hub would this operate a different network to the Xiaomi hub? Could they then interfere with each other? Im guessing because the Xiaomi hub was built to work with said devices they are less likely to drop off and that i would have proper control of the curtain.

Anyone have any ideas, comments or suggestions?

    Thanks

Shelly Door Window with Home Assistant and Node-RED over MQTT

    Posted: 13 May 2020 10:31 AM PDT

Shelly Door Window with Home Assistant and Node-RED over MQTT

The Shelly door sensor detects and reports the opening and closing of door and windows, tilt angle, vibration and lux. And guess what I will integrate this sensor in Home Assistant and Node-RED without any flashing or modifications.

This brand new battery powered creation from Shelly supports MQTT protocol out of the box. And MQTT is a widely used protocol in the Smart Home world for communication between IoT devices.

    Now let's go:

    https://youtu.be/14p6iYCmLgQ

Shelly Door Window with Home Assistant and Node-RED over MQTT

If you prefer to read - check this full article and my most detailed one until now - https://peyanski.com/shelly-door-window-sensor-home-assistant-and-node-red

In this video I will do a quick unboxing, then I will disable the cloud connection to enable the MQTT support. I will show you how you can easily manage MQTT topics using MQTT Explorer. And for dessert I will integrate the Shelly Door/Windows sensor with Home Assistant and I will create an example automation with notification there. For the Node-RED part I will create a flow that will detect the sensor changes using MQTT nodes and then again I will send some kind of notification.

I really hope that you find this information useful and you now know how to configure Shelly Door window sensor with Home Assistant and Node-Red using MQTT.

Thank you for watching/reading, stay at home, stay safe and see you next time.

    Cheers,

    Kiril
