Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I keep accidentally turning the stove gas on, usually when I brush up against it while cleaning or walking by. Is there a device that can detect when there’s gas and no fire and automatically shut it off?

    Automation solutions for mortise locks?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:46 PM PST

    Hi folks,

I recently acquired a replacement mortise lock unit for my house as the old one had a broken. The new one is the Mortise Emtek 3300 lockbox (backseat 2-1/2 with F13 egress emergency exit).

Are there any modern smart home automation solutions for mortise locks? I've searched high and low and haven't found any compelling solutions (especially for mortise locks with deadbolt + handle latch)

    Looking for suggestions

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:03 PM PST

I've had a wink set up for a number of years - Currently using the wink hub 2 and am looking to make a break. I was leaning toward SmartThings but someone recommended I look at Hubitat...I looked at it and it seems cool...But thought I would reach out to this fine group for other ideas. I have about 40 items that are controlled via the wink hub currently and would want to move them all to a new hub.

Am a big apple fan and would really like to use homekit but unfortunately thats super limited with respect to integrations.

A few items that i have tha i would like to integrate - Lyric Alarm Panel, August Lock, Kwikset lock, various generic z-wave binary switches, GE Switches, Eaton Halo Smart LED Can lights, Sylvania Smart bulbs, Honeywell T-Stat, Generic Zigbee Lightbulbs Etc Etc...And of course Alexa for voice control.

Any thoughts on what might be a solution to consider as I move from Wink?

    Thanks very much in advance.

    home automation audio

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:00 PM PST

This is a 2 part question.

    1. what are you doing for per room audio?
    2. what are you doing for whole home audio?

I keep debating on whether or not to put a smaller receiver/pi setup in each room. OR to go with some sort of central audio hub and just run the speaker wire to each room and route whatever from central location

The majority of the stuff listened to is either spotify, amazon music, or podcasts.

Would love to see/hear about what others have setup.

Switching smart outlets with smart switch?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:42 PM PST

I'm trying to set up a smart switch to turn on two lamps as well as it's primary function. I could use either smart outlets or smart bulbs in the lamps but want them to turn on/off whenever the switch is flipped.

I've got an Alexa and the switch is Govee brand. All connected through Alexa but I haven't found a way to set them up the way I'd like. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 04:44 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm looking for a thermostat where I can control the temperature on my phone. I don't need that smart learning stuff. I just wanna adjust the thermostat from anywhere.

    Thanks

Anyone using EcoNet by Rheem? I'm wondering what I can actually control with this. I have a Rheem Hybrid hot water tank, which I assume I can control.

Wiring Smart Switch / Replace Existing

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:53 AM PST

    Wiring Diagram

Hi. I'm trying to replace an existing 2 gang switch with a new 2 gang smart switch. Imgur link of diagram attached. The new switch has no common poles and replaces multiple L1/L2 poles with single of each. Existing blue wires are not connected to existing and are terminated in a terminal block behind the face plate.

This is driving me crazy - have tried the logical and have not found the correct configuration. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: I'm in the UK for wiring codes, and the existing cables don't have any labels.

Has anyone done a review/round up of the WiFi light switches that can be got from Aliexpress (specifically the no neutral required models)?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 04:44 PM PST

    I can't find any.

I'm interested in checking the circuitry and going through them before I put something potentially dangerous mounted permanently in my wall. Especially since the way (if I understand correctly) these units work, is to allow a TRIAC to stay on constantly to allow enough current to power the device, without leaking enough to making the light fitting turn on.

I've bought two different light switches from Ali Express.

Item number 4000289352430, with no RF433, the no neutral version. I bought two of these, the 1 gang for €15 and the 3 gang for about €16.

Item number 4000330153000, no neutral version 1 gang for €11.88

I've lost the thread, but the reason for buying the two from the first listing is people saying that they can flash Tasmota easily. I do need a 3 gang one for a room, so I needed to ensure I bought one that I could flash.

The second one I'm much more interested in. At €12, it's really cheap for a push button WiFi light switch that needs no neutral (touch control ones and ones that need a neutral can be got cheap).

Has anyone experience with these? What I'm particularly interested in is a circuit diagram and component listing.

Anyone interested in helping me reverse engineer these so we can break down the operation and see if they're safe?

I won't have these for a while, but wanted to see if breaking down the circuitry was something I could get a few people interested in before I start hacking them apart.

I used Ali Express item numbers as I know Automod can pickup Ali links as spam. If you just plop those numbers into the search box it will bring up the listing.

If you move, are you taking all your smart devices with you?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:23 AM PST

First I'm referring to stuff that you had to replace in your house. So if you take it with you, you'll have to go back and put in the previous device that was replaced by your smart device.

I recently bought my first house and installed a bunch of smart switches in my home. I did tell my wife that whenever we move, whether that be 2 years from now or 20, I'm not taking these smart switches with me. They're staying and whoever moves in will deal with them however they like.

As for the rest, that will depend on the number of years that I'll be living here. I have a Nest Hello, Nest Thermostat, and U-Bolt Pro(smart lock) and if it's just been 2-3 years then I'll definitely keep them. 5 years later it'll be a maybe. Something like 10+ years? I'll definitely leave them behind and grab something new.

Of course stuff like smart TV's, vacuum, or speakers will go with me. But the rest, I don't want to go through the trouble of reinstalling the old stuff and it gives me an excuse with the wife to buy whatever the hot new items are in the next decade or so lol. So what about you guys?

    Looking for a smart peephole

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:30 AM PST

Hi folks, I am looking for a smart device with camera that can be installed on a peephole from inside. So, looking from the outside it looks like a normal door not a fancy one.

Also, it has to connect to wifi/cloud and alert when it detects someone outside.

These doorbell cameras are so dumb, they might work for rich US citizens. But for others, it doesn't make any sense, since someone can destroy it easley. Protecting the device is still a big deal since these things are expensive. And a security device has to be secured.

So, do you know something like this?

Make a normal ceiling fan smart?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 12:43 PM PST

So right now we are redoing our kitchen and family room. While we are redoing everything I want to try and add some smart home stuff to the ceiling fan in the family room. The power for the fan is connected to the light switch and an outlet is also connected to a plug, but that's behind a couch and we don't use that plug. What would be an easy and cheap..ish way to add smart features to the fan? Like being able to say "hey google turn on the light" or "hey google turn on the fan on medium". All I know about the fan is it has 1 light setting, on or off, so no dimming and the fan has 3 settings, light medium and high. Any suggestions?

What am I missing/ how do I manage it?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:26 PM PST

I'm finishing a home renovation. While it was pretty smart before, it's getting smarter. I've been out of the house for almost a year, and when I left Wink controlled every piece of equipment that needed some control. But times change and they won't work.

My fear: about two dozen Lutron Caseta switches (new). A half dozen Hue bulbs that I may not use. 2-5 Bali smart roller shades, with the possible addition of other smart blinds. 2 Schlage Connect locks. Lift master garage door with MyQ. Several Sonos. A bunch of outdoor (new), indoor (new) and doorbell Ring cameras. 3 Nest thermostats (2 new). NuHeat floor heating with smart thermostat (new). I also have a Foobot.

Are there any items I'm missing? I could probably use some water leak sensors. Also, while I have an Echo Show somewhere, with Wink's demise i believe I need a new hub. And I also would like a single control interface— but that's not a require that.

Big questions: what can manage the Schlage? Best option for the Lutron? Do I need to unpair my old devices and how? Which hub is the best bet: can either smart things or Hubitat do it all? I enjoy the technology, but I want to use it not manage it. Ideally I would mount an iPad somewhere and run most of the house from there. Is Home the one app that could rule them all?

Is a robotic vacuum cleaner good for a 1 bedroom apartment?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:37 AM PST

I live by myself in a one bedroom apartment that is all on one level. I have a couple rugs down but the floor is generally entirely uncarpeted.

If I got a robotic vacuum cleaner would I need to ever vacuum by hand? I'd love to never have to do this.

Edit: what model would you recommend?

How are the Yeeuu smart locks?

Connecting Vizio soundbar to Caavo and Nvidia Shield?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 02:23 PM PST

Hey, currently use the Harmony hub and app to turn a projector and Hue lights on, as well as lower the motorized screen. I use an Nvidia Shield connected to Caavo. Trying to connect the Vizio V51-H6 soundbar to the Caavo and get this in the Harmony routine.

Currently the soundbar is connected to the Shield via bluetooth but it has an HDMI I've connected to the Caavo and can't figure out how to set up. Appreciate any help, thank you.

Why is Chamberlain MyQ such unreliable trash?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 01:38 PM PST

Rhetorical question/rant - I've had a MyQ for a couple years and it just generally sucks. Works maybe 80% of the time, no apparent rhyme or reason. And when it fails to work, it fails consistently so just "trying again" doesn't help, which is super frustrating. I'm not doing any fancy HA integration, just pushing the effing button on their effing app. Just a minute ago, I want the door to close, push button, stupid MyQ beeps stupidly for 10 seconds, then nothing happens. Consistently, repeatedly. But if I close the door 'manually' then push the MyQ button again, it opens just fine. Consistently, repeatedly. So there's clearly nothing wrong with any of the communication links in the chain... just the MyQ is trash.

Exactly the opposite of what I need in a garage door thingamajig.

Anybody found a way to make this thing not suck?

    /rant

Or a recommendation for a z-wave integrated door opener thing, since that's what I've got?

    Thanks!

Did my bt hue lamp just connected elsewhere?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 10:19 AM PST

    Hi there,

I have 2 hue lights that were working good with the hue bt app but things changed when i tried to get them working with google home app I'd search how to do it, one step seems to remove the lights from the hue app which i did with no sucess. Then i thought i would had to unpair the lamps from my phone, which i did for one of them and now i can't pair it again since it says that the hue lamp rejected the request. The other one i had no problems finding it with the hue bt app again, since i didn't unpair it from the phone, i guess.

I've tried everything since disconnecting the bulb, turn on/off bt but nothing. I now can only control it with the dimmer. Still on my bt devices but reject the request of pairing through the phone and hue bt app cannot find the light.

Did i just lost the bt function on this one?

    Open Source switched socket

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:44 AM PST

I want to turn one of my wifi access points off at night, and since the device doesn't have that capability built in, I have decided to get a simple timer socket. I then thought this might be an ideal opportunity to dip my toes in the water of "smart" automation, and have started to look around at a wireless connected device which could be programmed remotely. It would of course have to retain it's program when the wifi is off - is shouldn't just be a remote switch!

I know there are a multitude of commercial closed source options available, but I don't want to go down that route. Which of the available hardware has the ability to flash open source software instead of the proprietary firmware from the producer? Most information I find around the internet seems to be dated by 4-5 years.

    Thanks!

Display Ring doorbell video on Echo Show when motion is detected?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:23 AM PST

How can I get my Echo show devices to automatically show the video from Ring doorbell when motion is detected?

I have Ring linked with Alexa and can call up video on Echo Show via voice commands. The motion trigger from the Ring in the Alexa routines works fine. But I can't figure out how to get the Echo Show to display the video as part of a routine. For some reason Ring doesn't show up as a skill when looking for it under the routine actions.

    Smart and solar-powered shade

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 06:54 AM PST

I hope to cover a small window, approx 2ft by 4ft, in a high, hard-to-reach place.

    Solar-powered and remote-controlled is a must. Automated sunset/sunrise cycles would be a nice-to-have.

My online searching hasn't found much. Any ideas?
