    Home Automation HDMI matrix

    Home Automation HDMI matrix

    HDMI matrix

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:33 PM PST

Is there and HDMI matrix that will allow HDCP 2.3 and 4K? I'm curious how the handshake works with like a set top box and also like a DVD player, can I pass a single signal to multiple TVs, and can I use a single device with any TV in the house?

    Fireplce keeps turning back on

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:19 AM PST

My home fireplace doesn't have any smart options. However, it does have a remote to turn it on/off. I'm Using a Broadlink RM4 and clone the signal of the remote. The RM4 turns the fireplace on and off just fine. However, when turning off it stays off for just a short time before turning back on.

Any insight on why it won't stay off would be much appreciated.

The fireplace is made by Lopi. However, they don't make the remote package. The remote is made by

GreenSmart® Deluxe Multi-Function Wireless Thermostat Remote Control. Here's a PDF of how the remote operates.

IFTTT: Help requested adding a delay before an action

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 03:25 PM PST

For some background: I have an amp and pedalboard connected to a few smart outlets. At this point in time, I've just been using Alexa's voice activation to turn all the devices on at once, but I've recently been trying to put a delay between when the pedals go on and when the amp comes on so I don't blow the speakers. I've been trying to follow the instructions at https://grapeot.me/adding-a-delay-to-ifttt-recipes.html, but I'm getting a little confused about what the EVENT in this URL is supposed to represent. Is it the name of the IFTTT event, or something arbitrary? Additionally, as I don't do many web-requests, I'm not entirely sure if I need to be using the GET or POST protocols for this. A detailed, step-by-step guide or explanation would be very helpful! Thank you!

Wi-Fi (light) switch to control another light?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 07:01 AM PST

I want to install a smart light switch at the front door to replace a dumb switch that controls the flood lights in front of the house. That part i understand how to do. However, I have a light switch by the back door that isn't in use or connected to anything; I want to replace that with a smart switch that can also control the flood lights at the front door). I don't have a hub or anything. Bonus if it can also be controlled by Alexa but not required. Thanks for your help!

Any recommendations on setting up video cameras around my home exterior in a high traffic area? I don't want to be alerted to death but I also don't want to miss something going on.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 05:48 PM PST

I have a house that has two sides with high traffic (alley and street) and I'm going to set up some video cameras with lights. Any advice on the best way to do this? I don't want to be alerted every 10 minutes but the only way around that is to shut off alerts entirely.

For now I'm leaning towards getting Ring with the video subscription but 1) kinda sucks that I'll really only know something happened after it happens and 2) kinda sucks to pay for for years for a subscription....just to know something happened after it happens.

Are you able to do any fine tuning or adjusting to the units themselves to make them more or less sensitive? Point them more towards the ground to filter out street traffic?

Programmable (on /off time) LED strip light controller?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:15 PM PST

I'd like to set up some LED strip lights behind my TV that turn on and off automatically on a timer. I have some smart outlets that we use in other places. Problem is the LED controller that came with our light kit has to be turned back on each time the smart switch gives it juice. I'm looking for a controller that either can be programmed for on / off times or will remember it's last setup each time it powers on. Suggestions?

Advice on which controller/system to use? Based on the following smart home devices.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 12:18 PM PST

I just moved and have put in a ton of smart devices into the new house. I had SmartThings in old house but setting up the new software has been a chore and I'm wondering if I should switch to a new system. HomeKit, other? We're an Apple family. But also Amazon.

    I have:

    3 Ecobees

40+ Hue lights of all types

    10 (so far) Lutron switches

    3 Kwikset 914 locks

    MyQ garage

Will be adding Blink cameras and motion sensors.

Thoughts on what best and easiest to control it all?

    Robot Vacuum Recommendation

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 07:19 AM PST

Greetings! Looking for a robot vacuum with a couple "must have" features. 1) AI technology to avoid cat puke/toys/cables. 2) Ability to work on 3 stories. 3) Works well on multiple surfaces (I have carpet, hardwood and tile). 4) Will operate on dark/patterned rugs. 5) Functionality can't be dependent on proximity to router (router is on 1st floor and the majority of living happens on our 2nd floor).

Seems like Roborock and Deebot are well loved but have seen some concerns with Roborock not actually suctioning. Trifo Lucy seems to be capable of doing what I need it to but I'm not finding any reviews for it. Open to other suggestions.

Controlling different brands of Zigbee enabled switches, lights and plugs with ONE app

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:02 PM PST

Hello. I'm new to the smart home world and I have some questions. I've recently got some smart Tuya brand bulbs that have the Zigbee protocol. I'm using the Tuya app to control the bulbs and all is well. But I plan on getting smart Zigbee plugs and switches that are not of the Tuya brand. (let's say they are of brand X)

My question is, if I use the smart Zigbee plugs of brand X with their app, can I control my lights with the same brand X app? Since both my Tuya lights and smart plugs are using the same Zigbee protocol.

That being said, if I get different smart lights/switches/plugs of different brands that uses the Zigbee protocol, can I choose ANY app that is Zigbee enable and control them all?

Does Abode require an internet connection to work?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 06:56 PM PST

Have a friend thinking about getting this system because he's tired of Wink being down.

I understand it has a cellular backup but can it function without any connection at all and run and be administerd only locally?

Best robot vacuum for pet hair with hardwood floors AND mapping/planning?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 03:23 PM PST

We had a ILIFE V3s Pro Robot Vacuum Cleaner and I really thought it did a good job physically picking up the hair, but the "random" pattern of cleaning drove me absolutely frigging insane.

Looking for something that works on hard floors and pet hair, and I can either A) show it how to maneuver the room once and it remembers the room, or B) it plans on its own. So basically not "random" pathing.

    Any suggestions?

(We also have a full google home/nest system so if it could connect to that it would also be cool but not totally necessary.)

Why don't smart bulbs need Neutral or Ground but most switches do?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:26 AM PST

Most of my home has neutral and ground in every electrical box but a few boxes don't. In my research I have found only a few Wi-Fi or motion detector light switches that do not require neutral (they usually do require ground though)...the vast majority of switches require neutral and ground. I understand why the smart switches need neutral. But there are tons of Wi-Fi led bulbs and bulbs with motion detection built in that do work on on light fixtures that do not have neutral or ground connected.

I understand why the smart switches need neutral, but how are smart bulbs able to work without it?

Solved: If you have an older house that doesn't have neutral in the switch box that does mean your home doesn't have neutral at all. There will still be a neutral wire going directly to the light fixture. This is why smart bulbs will work on a light fixture that a smart switch may not because there is no neutral in the switch box. Thank you to all who took the time to explain.

Different messages for leaving versus arriving

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:51 AM PST

I want the echo flex I have right by the front door to say "did you remember to wear your mask" when people leave my home and "welcome home" when people enter my home.

Is there a way to set this up? I don't want it to be based on cell phones entering some boundary cause I want the messages sent even for people who aren't carrying phones. I live in an apartment so can't change the lock

    Pulsing Nest Thermostat (Gen 3)

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 12:21 AM PST

Context: I recently installed a Nest thermostat in a 2 wire setup to work with my boiler. From my understanding the thermostat charges when the system is running and by stealing power at intervals. This causes my boiler to kick on for short pulses thinking there is a call for heat. This is particularly annoying at 3:00 am when my dog wakes me up and I'm trying to fall back asleep. The fix that is floating around is to install a 220ohm 5V resistor on the boiler to prevent it from "seeing" the small power demand of the thermostat as a call for heat to effectively get a Common lead where there previously wasn't one. My question is, can I run 24V AC straight to the C lead from a transformer? I have 18/7 chased through the wall to the thermostat upstairs and connected to a terminal block in the basement so I can tap in easily there and leave the existing 2 wire setup to my boiler alone. Thanks in advance.
