What's the solution to janky, temporary installations? How do I really integrate automation into my home?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 02:51 PM PST

As per the title. The house is a hodge podge of sensors and devices tied together with Samsung ST. Ultimately I want the house to be automated in a way when I come to sell, it's part of the space, a feature.

For example, having a smart thermostat with radiator valves, integrated alarm system, automated external shutters etc... These things I want to be a relatively permanent addition to the house.

I'm getting quite frustrated at how the industry is fragmented and "gadget-y"... I get tired of having to reprogram everything whenever a manufacturer decides to push an update. I'm sick of devices being arbitrarily cut off (Nest smoke alarm for example). Apologies for the moaning.

So, does anyone know where I can go to find an all in one, reliable, long term home automation solution for the aforementioned devices ?

    Thanks in advance

Chasing the Unicorn Video Doorbell... Is this too much to ask for?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 06:41 AM PST

So with the barrage of doorbells released this year, i am looking for the everything in one solution, i know I am chasing the unicorn, but does this exist?

    1. Smartthings Integration
    2. Alexa Show /Google Integration - to automatically show the visitors on the screen
    3. Facial Recognition - should speak the name of the person.
    4. Extremely good resolution with both night vision and HDR/WDR.
    5. Local storage - No subscription
    6. Decent range detection - should have a field of exempt. Less/smart false motion detection
    7. Package Detection
    8. Auto Siren - Off hours

I know a few of the things the 360 Video Doorbell X3 can do, a few of the things Nest and Ring door bell will do, and the local storage and really nice camera feature is on the Eufy door bells.

So surely i am chasing the unicorn. Or is something planned down the year its worth waiting for?

Echo Plus and zigbee wireless remotes - SUCCESS!

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 04:41 PM PST

Picked up the EcoSmart Smart LED Starter Kit and a few boxes of the EcoSmart Smart A19 Tunable White LED bulbs last summer to incorporate into my Echo Plus HA setup. The Starter Kit instructions incorrectly state that you cannot use the hub and remote at the same time.

I first played with the bulbs using the remote, and then reset them and connected five bulbs to my Echo Plus Alexa setup and have been using this setup for more than 6 months. A couple of days ago I came across a procedure for Tradfri remotes with Echo Plus that made sense and applied that procedure to the EcoSmart Remote.

Without removing or unpairing any of the EcoSmart bulbs, I proceeded to add the remote to the Echo Plus as follows. I asked "Madam A" to discover devices, waited a couple of seconds, then while holding the EcoSmart Zigbee Remote within 6 inches or so of the Echo Plus, reset the remote by inserting the supplied reset pin (or a straightened small paper clip) in the reset button pin hole for 3 seconds. The red LED on the remote will begin flashing and then respond as it communuicates with the Echo Plus. Alexas will continue to search for new devices, and then, if successful, report that she has found one "other device". Note that this new "other device" is nowhere to be found in the Alexa App.

Now comes the cool part. One at a time, I was able to add each of my bulbs that were already paired with Alexa to the remote using the Touchlink steps. While holding the remote very close (1-2 inches) to a lighted bulb, pressing both the ON/OFF and DIMMING buttons for about 3 seconds until the red LED on the remote begins to flash should initiate communication with the bulb. The bulb will change brightness and flash before returning to its previous state. Confirm with Alexa that you still have voice control of the bulb. And you should now also have remote button control of the light and its color temperature.

Added all five of my bulbs in the family room, and now I have a physical remote for the lights in this room for users not versed in the exact voice commands that "Madam A" requires to interface with them. Next, I experimented with new Tradfri E14 and Sengled E11-G13 ZHA1.2 bulbs in my living room. With the Tradfri bulbs, I was able to add, control, and then individually unpair from the remote. No success with the Sengled bulbs.

Will report on my experiences with the Lutron Connected Bulb Remote Model LZL4BWHL01 as soon as I get these back in my possesion.

Want to also evaluate the Trust Model ZYCT-202, the Lutron Aurora, and the RGBgenie ZB-5122.

Is there a way to know if a GFCI outlet gets tripped?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 10:43 AM PST

I have a GFCI outlet outside my house connected to my generator's panel/battery. Yesterday I couldn't remember the last time I heard the generator's weekly self test, so I went out and saw the panel was completely dead. The service company came out and said the GFCI was tripped and the battery then drained and stopped the weekly tests. My choices are to add online monitoring of the generator itself (pricey) or just get an alert if the GFCI stops providing power. Is there something I can use for that?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 02:40 PM PST

First I want to apologize if the this is a wrong place for this.

I currently own a Vaillant VUW SOE 202/3-5 turboTEC plus gas water heater and very basic Valliant VRT 30 thermostat. I'm looking for a smart thermostat that can be used for this type of the device and if possible a non cloud solution. Does anybody have any good suggestions?

Edit: few people have mentioned tado netatmo thermostat and erelax valiant. But I'm not sure is there any better solution. Sorry for my bad english.

Help wiring new GE Enbrighten Plus Smart Light Dimmer

What smart switches paired with smart bulbs work well?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 10:46 AM PST

TLDR; I want some smart lighting and am starting it from scratch. Advice appreciated on what product to buy for smart bulbs connected to smart switches.

    Goal:

    • Color changing bulbs in some areas of the house.
    • Dimmable Cool / Warm bulbs in some areas of the house.
    • Dimmable On/Off bulbs in the majority of the house.
    • Unified aesthetic on switches throughout the house.
    • Rooms can be turned off by the in-wall mounted switch. (or convince me otherwise)

The problem with smart bulbs (and what we hated about them in our previous place) was that it required phones or voice to turn on / off lights... as using the switch killed the bulb entirely. We often have guests over, so available switches is a must, but we don't want old dumb switches that are blocked off, and wireless switches right next to them. (it just adds confusion)

As far as I can tell, I have a limited number of options for smart switches that do not actually cut power to the bulbs, and those that due exist are slow or buggy.

    Relevant hardware:

    • Dumb Paddle Switches (will all be changed out, but not compatible with things like Lutron Aurora)
    • Alexa
    • Ring Alarm (hub)

EDIT: Some rooms have light switches that controls fans... so being able to keep fan control would be great in those cases.

Any Smart Motion Sensor Dimming Light Switches?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 06:44 PM PST

Right now I'm using a Lutron Maestro Motion Sensor Switch, I like these switches since they fit in my gang decorator.

I thought I could buy that with some Phillips Hue bulbs and set up the room to be X% bright during the day, and Y% bright at night. But it turned out I need the Phillips motion sensor for that.

I'm hoping to have a setup where the switch fits in my current light switch gangs, I don't want an extra piece pasted to the wall, or next to the light switches. Does anything like that exist?

Using a transistor to automate an amplifier

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 10:59 PM PST

This is a bit of a weird project, but something I always thought would be cool.

I have a Schiit Vali 2 which has a tube pre-amp. Tubes can wear out over extended use and should be turned off when idling. What I wanted to do was automate it so that when I lift my headphones off the stand, the amplifier would automatically turn on and start warming up. Then when I put the headphones back, it turns off.

I plan on using a force sensitive resistor to sense the headphones and a Raspberry Pi Pico as a microcontroller. My question is, how do I set up the circuit to safely use the Pi as an on-off switch for the amplifier. I looked into some circuit diagrams and couldn't find anything simple enough that I could understand but also went into explanations on the risks and why a certain method works.

If it turns out using a circuit is not the way to go, I would be willing to make a servo to flip the switches. It should be possible (https://www.schiit.com/public/upload/images/vali2plus-rear-1920.jpg), but I'd rather not go down this road because it would be noisy, delayed, and bulky.

    Anything helps! Thanks

If this is the wrong sub, I'd appreciate being directed to the right one.

Did I choose the wrong hub?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 10:06 PM PST

I have brinks security system at home but I wanted to switch to Apple network a few reason but mainly because what will happen if I ever cancel brinks services, the problems is as we all know this hubs make it hard to link just any device or brand to them, so should I just finish the entire house with brinks or start buying products that work with Apple and keep brinks only for security?

    Product suggestions

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 05:59 PM PST

I've got a few things I want to try and setup at home but I'm not a big smart-home product follower and not looking to RGB my house. Purely controlling turning on/off of circuits in convenient methods is all I'm after.

    • Control a lamp (pair to receptacle??) using the same light switch that controls ceiling lighting in the room. Dual button switch is best but a single toggle to do it all would work too.
    • Control a 15A receptacle using a motion detector or light switch/motion switch (I want to use this to start/stop a hot water recirc pump in my basement when we enter our kitchen or master bathroom)
    • Control exterior lighting using a switch on a different power circuit (I can wire the switch to power, but wiring it to the exterior light circuit would greatly complicate the wiring layout)

We have no desire to use voice commands for any of this, but I might use routines with google home and would prefer everything be compatible. I have excellent wifi coverage and can also put a central hardwired control hub without issue as well.

    Is this a neutral wire?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 06:06 PM PST

Is that a neutral wire in there?

Hi, I don't understand this white wire in the back. The right conduit goes to my porch light. Left conduit goes to my foyer light that has switches in four different places on the wall.

The white wire in the back is continuous and can't be pulled out.

Looking to install a smart switch.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Programming IR remote-controlled blinds

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 05:56 PM PST

    Hi!

We have new blinds that are controlled with an IR remote control. I'd like the blinds to go down every day at noon (or even better every day at noon when it's sunny outside).

I've thought of using a Logitech hub. It's a bit pricey (and not fun enough).

Any other idea? Any suggestion for an IR blaster that's easy to use with a Raspberry Pi?

    WIFI vs wired Zigbee gateways

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 05:47 PM PST

Is there a reason that most Zigbee gateways I find use an Ethernet connection to connect to the router? Is there a reason (price, interference) that prevents the gateways having an additional WiFi module to connect wirelessly to the router instead of needing to be plugged in? I have found a few that connect to the router via WiFi but this seems to be a minority. Any reason for this?

    Alexa with Google products

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 05:26 PM PST

Hello, I don't know if this is the best place to ask this, but this sub has been really helpful in the past.

I have been using a Google Home that I've been borrowing from a friend and I just received 2 Amazon Echo Dots in the mail. I'm going to be returning the Google Home to my buddy, but wanted to see if I can keep some of the features that I liked using it.

    1. Is there a way I can use my Alexa to play Netflix/Spotify to my Chromecast?
    2. I like to listen/watch podcasts on youtube on my PC and then Chromecast the audio to my Google Home in the kitchen to continue listening while I go cook or something. My PC doesn't have bluetooth so I wouldn't be able to pair my PC to Alexa via BT.

    Thanks!

Ideas for working a non standard three way switch

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 09:34 AM PST

I have a three way switch wired like this: https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-wire-a-threeway-switch/

The first switch box has a neutral wire, then I have two lights, and then both travellers go to a switch box on another floor with no neutral wire.

I tried wiring a single tp link hs210 switch at first the box (the one with the neutral wire) hoping that it would work. Unfortunately it does not work.

Does anyone have any advice on wiring a smart switch in this configuration?
