Looking for recommendations on a fully wireless (battery) outdoor camera that plays nice with Motion Eye and Home Assistant

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:58 AM PST

I know the fully wireless cams aren't about a full time live stream, but I'd like one that:

    • Is not locked into its own app ecosystem, can be viewed elsewhere via RTSP etc - Specifically I'm using Motion Eye as my NVR but may try out others in the future
    • Can be integrated into automation as motion sensor, i.e. HA automation to snap a pic on motion send on to notification etc (again, not having to use a proprietary app to do that sort of thing)
    • Ideally no cloud dependence
    • Outdoor, weatherproof
    • Good battery life - not sure what's typical in this category, I see some advertise a year but I'm figuring my use is probably heavier. I guess 3-6 months between charges would be good? What's realistic?

Just pay me shipping (we can figure that out via DM) and it's yours. Just want to give back to the community. Hopefully this isn't against the rules.

Help with Well Pump and Shelly EM Wiring

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:57 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm trying to track down an energy hog in my house, and my well pump is one of the potential suspects.

The well pump is fed by a 40amp double pole breaker and is 230v.

Question 1: Does the shelly power(L) have to be fed by the breaker the pump is on? Or can I just use any convenient power source in the vicinity?

Question 2: Am I able to put both load wires coming out of the breaker in 1 clamp, or do I need to have them clamped separately?

    Any assistance is much appreciated!!

Thoughts for “Busy” light for home work?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 09:08 PM PST

I have been toying with the idea of a wifi / web enabled "Busy" light that I can remotely trigger from my outdoor work shed when I am on zoom calls. I have considered a single colored Hue bulb (not exactly sexy), and a Pi connected to an LED strip (but I don't really want to write any code). So yeah. lazy but I want something nice and web enabled (the shed is too far for Bluetooth)

The cheat way would be to have some tablet connected and just have it refresh a webpage that I set to red/Busy or green/available ... but before I did that I wanted to see if anyone else had come up with a cool idea ?

Anyone have experience with e104-bt01 Bluetooth ibeacon module?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 08:07 AM PST

Hi everyone, firstly, apologies for the basic questions and the lack of knowledge my side (still learning!).

we're looking at setting up beacons around our facility to be read by a primary device in close proximity, operating in isolation. I dont believe the beacon needs to recieve, only broadcast its uuid. Which we can then validate on the side of the primary device that sits with the user. What we're wondering is, once the module is configured with a specific uuid as well as the other params we may wish to configure, does the module need anything other than a power supply to operate? The module in question is the one with the integrated antenna (up to 100m).

If I may ask as well, looking at pictures online, the pins on the board are these half-moon shapes along the outside, it was unclear to me what housing this goes into, or what the appropriate way is to solder to the board. I'm slim on terminology here, unfortunately. But would greatly appreciate any pointers.

    Thanks in advance!

App to control Phillips Hue and Wiz lights?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 12:30 PM PST

I recently purchased a hue bridge with 4 lights, but I also have 4 of the Phillips Wiz wifi lights. I am currently controlling these with two different apps.

Is there an app to control both of these, or could I integrate with my iPhone Home app somehow?

    Simple temperature regulation system

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:03 AM PST

Hello, I'm new to home automation / smart home systems, but have solid background in IT and computer networking. I'm looking for solution to regulate heating in my flat. I have 2 electric heaters without temperature regulator, and would like to connect them via controllable outlet to system that would turn them off and on as needed. System would also be connected to few temperature sensors and I would write the logic for when to turn which heater on and off depending on the temp sensor readouts. I would also like to add some kind of thermostat on which I could set the desired temperature in addition to setting the desired temperature on mobile phone.

In the future I would probably like to add 2 window sensors so that system stops heating if any window is open. All the components would have to communicate wirelessly (Z-wave maybe?).

Could you please recommend me platform and components on which to implement this? I tried googling but got overwhelmed with various platforms and was afraid to pick something that would be overkill for this requirements.

Thank you very much and best regards

New Build - Need Recs on Z-wave hub and light switches

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 09:09 AM PST

I recently bought a new construction house (built in 2020).

I want to add some smart switches, but I'm a little confused on what works and what doesnt, and what I should purchase.

I'm currently looking to buy Zooz z-wave switches since they're on sale right now.

    What I already have:

    • Ring Alarm system that acts as a z-wave hub
    • One z-wave dimmer switch for the porch (Came with the house)
    • Schlage z-wave smart lock thats connected to my Alarm system (arms and disarms home when you put in the code)
    • Honeywell z-wave thermostats (also connected to Ring alarm hub)
    • MyQ Garage Opener (Connected to Ring app too, not z-wave)
    • And Amazon Echo Show 5 (barely use)
    • Sony OLED 65inch with Android TV
    • Apple iPhone and Watches

    What I want:

    • Z-wave dimmer switches for the all the rooms
    • Z-wave dual switches for the rooms with fans

    My Questions:

    • Should I get a different z-wave/automation hub?
    • Will a dual switch control fan and lights if each is on a separate toggle switch? (see attached pictures)
    • What else do I need if anything?

    Pictures of what I have:

    Master Bedroom https://i.imgur.com/ScbwQZv.png

    • Would a dual switch work here?

    Kitchen: https://i.imgur.com/MbPQRiC.png

    • I assume I would need two normal dimmer switches here

    Spare Bedroom x 2 : https://i.imgur.com/1IkK4H1.png

    • Would a dual switch work here as well?

    Stairs + Hallway : https://i.imgur.com/ta1z6CG.png

    • Two dimmer switches I assume

Main Room / Living Room: https://i.imgur.com/eAGRnHi.png

    • I assume 2 normal dimmer switches for the entryway and the lamp. One Dual switch for the fan light and fan on/off.

Looking into getting 4K security cameras and use my own PC with software

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:47 PM PST

    Hi all,

Looking for a recommendation after searching online for hours and just getting more lost as I search.

I want to add a security system for my home, but I'm not very handy when it comes to construction type things, but am very handy when it comes to computers. So I was hoping to hire someone to install cameras, but then use my own PC that I will build and use blue iris (Not set in stone on this, if this isn't the beat option, I can easily be convinced out of it).

As far as cameras go, I really wanted to get 4K 30fps cameras with pan tilt and zoom, but the only one I found priced reasonably was a Lorex that only supports 15fps(not a deal breaker), but Lorex seems to get bad reviews. I'm looking to spend maybe 300 or 400 max per camera, and would be willing to not have pan and tilt if that causes too many problems getting what I want.

I need about 6 cameras for my home. I don't really have an absolute budget though for the cameras beyond I'd like the camera cost to be around 3-400 at max, but I can probably be convinced to spend more if it's worth it.

Also, does anyone know what kind of contractor would be best to install this stuff? All the local security companies I've called only want to install their own equipment and sell a plan with it.

    Thanks!

    Electric/voltage advice - appliance + smart plug

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:48 PM PST

    Hi all,

I have an espresso machine that I brought with me from abroad for a move to the US. I'd love to automate it switching on, but I'm worried about voltage conversion. I don't want to ruin my machine, the smart plug, or create a safety hazard.

The machine is from the UK, so 230 Volt. I have this step up converter. It says it's "AC110V to 220V, 2400VA." I'd like to use something like an Amazon Smart Plug.

Currently, espresso machine and coffee grinder (2 separate appliances) both plug into the step up converter. The converter itself has a 3-pronged plug that plugs into my US outlet in the kitchen. In the morning, I switch on the converter, then the coffee machine.

Would I be able to put the Smart Plug into the outlet, and then the US plug from the converter into into the smart plug? The plug says "Input: 100-120 VAC, 60Hz, 15A Max" "Output: 15A Max"

The grinder is 230V, 50Hz, 100W. The espresso machine is 240V, 50Hz, 1800W. Both plug into the converter and work fine that way. Image of smart plug + step up converter here.

How do I do this safely? Can I? Thank you!

    Smart dimming 12v LED strips

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 04:37 PM PST

I have a mostly Insteon system but I don't think this question is affected much by the choice of automation system.

I'm building some built-in furniture with some dimmable LED strips incorporated into it. I'd like to control the strips with my existing automation, and they came with a "dumb" physical knob dimmer.

Insteon makes a generic 0-10v ballast dimmer that I can control from anywhere but I'd need some other component to plug that into between my 12v power supply and the strips, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of something that would fit.

I can do straight switching very easily but I'd like to figure out the dimming story if possible, so I'd welcome suggestions.

Control from both iOS and Android?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 12:23 PM PST

Hi, I have just started with home automation and need some basic pointers. I have Sonoff power switches that I flashed with Tasmota. Now I have done some research about MQTT, HomeBridge and plugins, and mobile apps. I see there is an endless number of options by which I can get my switches to work with Siri. However, I would like family members with Android to have the same level of control.

I have no idea about Android and home automation. What should I offer for that ecosystem?

I see that a few more direct connections between iOS and the Sonoff switches are ruled out. But wouldn't it be possible to use an MQTT broker (on a RasPi?) for managing devices and state, and then I can use HomeBridge to connect to HomeKit and some other pathway for Android?

Or would HomeBridge without MQTT be sufficient? It did not look like it.

I am very familiar with all kinds of programming languages, scripting, flashing, Linux, and have at least some experience with Raspberries, Arduinos, NodeMCUs and other ESP chips. But home automation brings a lot of new technology that I have not yet even seen working in practice in the real world.. are my expectations too high?

Shelly Dimmer 2 simple wiring question

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 02:58 PM PST

Hey all, I may have a simple question here, but I'm just confused. Shelly support is offline at the moment, and i'd really like to give this a try tonight. Simply, I have a lamp that plugs into an outlet. the thought was I could connect the dimmer "inline". I'm just confused on the wiring. For those of you familiar with it, it has connections for SW1, SW2, L, L, L, N, O. Maybe i'm just over thinking this, but I see it like this...

L -> power wire from lamp

    N -> Neutrals.

O -> Hot wire from outlet?

I'm going to be printing a case for it, so it's all exposed. but I shouldn't need to use the SW1 or SW2 because I'm not putting it behind a switch, right?

    Thanks!

Smart Doorknob Options that work with Alexa?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:03 AM PST

So I've noticed most smart locks online are for deadbolts and not for a regular doorknob like this. I was wondering if there was any option to make a knob like that smart. I dont want to change the part of the door knob with the key slot at all. I'm ok with changing the part of the knob inside the room though. Would a deadbolt lock like Wyze Lock still work if thats the only side I want to change or do I have to look for something else? I also want to connect it to Alexa.

    How to flash bare CC2652P / E72-2g4m20s1e

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 08:15 AM PST

Hi guys, I ordered some bare CC2652P Modules (without USB board and such) and I was wondering how I best flash those woth the coordinator firmware.

    https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1Y1_7VYvpK1RjSZPiq6zmwXXaR.jpg_q50.jpg

Before I had a CC2531 that I flashed via the TI flasher. But I am kind of lost how to flash the CC2652P.

Does anyone by any chance have a tutorial or pictures on how that is best done? Like where do I solder my cables too and how do I flash that thing?

Set room temp with motion sensors. Useful?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:00 AM PST

I just had the idea of controlling the set temperature on my thermostats with motion detectors. E.g. if someone is in a room, set the temperature there to X, if not then Y.

Of course I would not rely on that exclusively, since some rooms should be warm when I enter them (e.g. bathroom in the morning). So I would set the temperature there with timers.

Have you tried this? If so, what is your experience?
