    Mains powered Wi-Fi thermometer

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:37 PM PST

    Hi,

Does anyone know of a mains powered Wi-Fi thermometer? We've installed Sensibo AC controllers in the rooms with AC but now I'm keen to know the temperature of our rooms without AC.

There are a few I've found like this one but they're battery powered an require a hub.

I'd prefer a set and forget mains plug in one if anyone knows of one.

New Home New Build - recommendations?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:35 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm buying a house (1998 build) and am trying to do some advance planning/budgeting for adding some HA. Most importantly, I want to minimize replacement of items I already have and maximize compatibility and seamlessness.

    What I already have:

Disclaimer: I've lived in houses from 1 to 3 years at a time for the last several years, so my existing setup is intentionally on the cheap/temporary side to avoid large install/uninstall efforts. The home I bought is intended to be very long term, so easy install is no longer a priority for future pieces.

    Hubs:

    Samsung Smartthings Hub v2

    Phillips Hue Hub v2

I'm also planning to buy a trio of Eero Pro 6 for mesh WiFi.

    "Smart things":

    2 Samsung Smartthings multipurpose/door sensors

    1 Samsung Smartthings motion sensor

    1 Samsung Smartthings outlet

A few Visonic MCT-340E Zigbee door sensors

A few various brand smart outlets - these aren't frequently used in current setup

A dozen various Phillips Hue bulbs

    Amazon Ecosystem Devices:

    4 Echo dot 2nd gen

    1 Echo dot 3rd gen

    1 Echo 2nd gen

    1 Echo Show 2nd gen

    1 Fire TV recast

    3 Fire TV stick 4k

1 old school Fire TV (probably won't use this in the new home, it's just too old and slow)

    Google Ecosystem Devices:

    2 Nest Cam Indoors

    1 Nest Thermostat

    Irrigation:

3 Orbit B-Hyve hose faucet smart timers for garden drip irrigation and potentially lawn watering (big bonus points for solutions that incorporate this into the rest of my system. I've been using the app to control it separately from everything else, which is fine but a more unified approach would be nice.)

    What the new home has:

Lots of unknowns here. Call me crazy, but I bought the place based on video tours and having close relatives check it out. I don't have any sort of regular access to the place to check out details, and won't really be able to map out circuits, count how many switches and such there are until I move in in early March. For now, mostly trying to get a feel for brands and types of pieces that will work together.

    Intercom:

No details here. Just the classic late 90s slightly upscale house intercom system. It has a central hub in the kitchen and speaker units in several rooms and at the front door.

    Home Security:

It's wired for ADT, but that is as much detail as I have for now. There are sensors on the exterior doors and a few motion detectors. I'm not planning on subscribing to ADT, so would like input on the best way to repurpose this system or at least the wiring if possible. There are also some floodlights on the exterior, but no indication that these are connected to the security system or anything.

    Nothing else smart.

Currently have no idea if neutrals are run to the switches or not.

I believe the home has dual-zone HVAC. Nest makes it simple enough to just add a second Nest Thermostat, right?

    What I'm looking for:

I want to be able to remotely control every light in the house and enable several routines based on doors opening, motion detection, and/or presence detection. Dimming capabilities are not a need everywhere but would be nice in some areas. That said, I do not know if the existing bulbs are all dimmable or not. I also want every light to work properly at the switches so as not to drive my in-laws insane (also so my kids don't drive me insane by flipping off switches and cutting power to smart bulbs). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There is at least one ceiling fan that I'd like to make smart as well (not positive if it has a remote or is just switch controlled, but it is several feet up in a 2-story area, so it's definitely not pull-chains), and we'll likely be installing more; smart out of the box for ones we install would be nice.

Several of the smoke detectors are expired, and there aren't any in the bedrooms, so I'll be looking to add some and replace what's there to make a consistent set that's also smart-enabled.

Some sort of home security solution:

A smart doorbell is a must. From what I can tell, the intercom system is the only doorbell; any thoughts on if this will allow a wired smart doorbell?

Smart door locks probably, though I need to get my wife to warm up to the idea a bit. I think there are three or four standard-type exterior doors (and one slider). Ideally I'd like them all to use the same physical key and be able to use the same main code on all as well as giving guest codes with more limited access.

I currently use the Nest Cams to monitor my toddlers, but won't be needing that much longer. That said, my wife is not a fan of indoor security cams in general (she finds it creepy) so not sure if those will get absorbed into a security system or not. Outdoor security cams would be great, bonus points for flood light and/or siren inclusion. In fact, outdoor cams aren't even a necessity, but smart-enabled floodlights with motion sensing are more of a priority.

As of now I'm not sure if I'll pay for any sort of subscription monitoring service; I'll have to get a better feel for the neighborhood and do some more research on incidence of property crime and such. It's in a suburban-rural area, so I expect it to be fine but I would like the option to subscribe to monitoring, just in case. Either way, I would like to be able to control the house lights and a siren (maybe the existing ADT siren?) and send notification to our phones in the event of a security incident.

Also: As an added bonus, having LED strips on the exterior that are smart-controlled and easily modifiable for different holidays (reducing annual Christmas decoration effort) is big on long-term wishlist. Not an early priority, but if anyone has suggestions I'd love to hear thoughts.

    Additional info:

Thoughts on brands: As I said upfront, I'd really like to use what I already have. Being able to interface with as much as possible via voice commands to Alexa is very important. That said, the sensor recognition and routine options native to Alexa are lacking, so something more powerful behind the scenes that is accessible via Alexa voice commands is ideal. I don't yet know what this looks like. Home security solutions within the Amazon ecosystem are my initial desire, but if they suck please do talk me out of it.

Budget: To be honest not really sure how much we're willing to spend right now. Lots of variables in play for now. Overall, just looking for solutions that are highly reliable and play nicely together. If needed I'll just build it piecewise as I find available funds.

Available time: I will have...some. Right after move-in I'll have about a week before I start my new job. This is also when my moving truck will be bringing my old stuff, furniture stores will be bringing new stuff, walls will need painting, maybe some reflooring. Beyond that, evenings and weekends.

Coding comfort: Moderate to high, potentially. I'm an aerospace engineer and am no stranger to programming, mostly things like MatLab and some moderate C++. For HA specific coding, my experience is limited to copying device handlers and using them to add my Visonic sensors, an Aqara temp/humidity sensor, and some old motion sensors that I no longer use to Smartthings. With just a touch of modifying the code to adjust reporting timelines and such. Disclaimer: I'm starting a new job and have no clue how much time/mental energy I'll be able to devote to learning a new programming language for a while.

DIY comfort: Moderate but cautious. I am no electrician; I am comfortable swapping out switches and outlets, I am decent at following wire diagrams and troubleshooting circuit issues. I don't have the tools/experience to do long wire traces, but am willing to learn and buy some tools if it would help. Other DIY stuff like mounting sensors, patching walls, etc. I'm generally fine with.

That's about it. If you stuck around this long, you rock, thanks. I would really appreciate thoughts about brands and general solutions that you think will help me get where I want to be, as well as cautionary tales, potential pitfalls of which to be aware, and the like. I'd especially appreciate thoughts on how to use the existing ADT and intercom systems to my advantage, if at all possible. I probably left out tons of important details (either because this is way too long already or because I don't know them yet) so ask for clarification as needed.

    Thanks!

    Android info tablet

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:31 PM PST

Right now I have HomeKit setup on my iPad and it's mounted right where I need it with my thermostat.

I'm wondering, if I can use a second tablet, preferably android for costs sake, and have it mounted somewhere else to control my ecobee and have an rtsp feed of my kid cam, I'd like it to be split screen. If Apple did this, I'd probably stick with them. Thoughts?

What options do I have for a 2 gang horizontal toggle switch

Looking for a smart light option for a pair of stacked horizontal toggle switches.

Every other switch in my house is decora style so I really would love a switch option like that.

Installing a smart switch just as a button for automation?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 05:02 PM PST

I installed a smart 3 way switch in my living and it works just fine. The only issue is that the other side of this 3 way no longer works, which honestly doesn't bother me. But it made me wonder about installing another switch right there solely for the purpose of running automations.

I assume I don't need to connect all the wires right? So which ones do need to be connected and could this possibly have a negative effect on my main living room switch.

How to configure 4 channel sonoff for only one active channel at all times?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:56 PM PST

I have a for a 4 speed kitchen exhaust fan that works by simply connecting hot wire to one of the speed wires. Meanwhile I have been using a simple three position rocker switch. One position speed low, middle position off, and two position on turbo.

I was thinking why not connect it to sonoff 4 channel, with one shared hot as common, and then each speed to each channel. However, at no point shall hot be connected to two speed wires at once. Which brings me to a question, since I am not familiar with sonoff products, can it be configured as such in the firmware itself? I know the automation hub or software can be configured this way, but having this feature available in sonoff firmware directly would be safer and better.

    SwitchBot Security Concerns?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:05 PM PST

I recently made a comment on a post mentioning that I was considering getting a SwitchBot for the door to my dorm room. Another user mentioned that he had some security concerns about SwitchBot devices, namely random people being able to activate the switch using Python or node.js files utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy. Does anyone have any experience with this or could they help to shed some light on whether or not this is a real threat?

Recommend a good USB power supply

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:16 AM PST

Hi, I am running two pi's and an arduino off a USB power supply strip at the moment, supposedly this can supply 5v 2.5 A to all devices, but it doesn't and I have undervoltage issues, could anyone recommend a good supply that can do at least three devices at 5v 2.5 amp.

    Thank you!

Kitchen reno. Have a week of blank slate, what should I be doing before cabinets arrive?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:54 PM PST

So, new to us house. We demolished the kitchen cabinets and we are down to sheet rock. I have about 2 weeks before new cabinets arrive. What HA things can I be doing to get ready before I have a finished kitchen?

It would be easier to add cool stuff while it's already a mess.

I have smart switches already planned out. I may add 2 in ceiling speakers but won't be connecting them to a receiver u til later but I am thinking if they are are cutting the ceiling to move a light it may be worth the install now.

Is there any other HA improvements I haven't thought of? What would you do in this situation?

4 gang brushed metal zigbee switches?

Automate Ring Doorbell Motion Sensor to Deter Thieves

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:23 PM PST

I'm frustrated that I can't find online what seems to be a simple automation that I feel most people would want. If anyone has a solution for this I would be super grateful!

    I have a Ring Doorbell.

I'm trying to deter burglars or crazies coming to my front door at night so I want to set at certain times in the AM, if my ring doorbell detects motion, access the ring doorbell speaker to play a prerecorded "Hey what are you doing? Get out of here." Or dog barking noises. How can I accomplish this?

    Thanks!

Recommend me some smart can lights for Circadian Daylight

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:38 PM PST

Hey all! I'm renovating my house and adding ~40 6" downlights, half will be in my main floor's ceiling which has insulation. I run Hubitat Elevate and want all my lights to work with Circadian Daylight, which changes the color temperature of the lights throughout the day. I am having a hell of a time finding a downlight that meets the following criteria:

    1. Does not require a separate can
    2. CCT tunable via Zigbee or Zwave so it works properly with Circadian Daylight
    3. IC rated

Does such a product even exist? I wish the so-called "wafer lights" such as this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Halo-HLBSL-6-in-Color-Selectable-New-Construction-or-Remodel-Canless-Recessed-Integrated-LED-Kit-HLBSL6099FS351EMWR/311575585#product-overview could have their CCT set by an app instead of a switch on the side of the jbox. Should I just say screw it and install a bunch of remodel can housings?

Is anybody else doing Circadian Daylight type stuff with downlights/can lights? What are you using?

Struggles with Broadlink RM4 Pro and Samsung TV

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 04:58 AM PST

I got myself an RM4 Pro. I used to have a Harmony hub and ditched it as it was infuriating in so many ways. One thing that was great with it though, was that it had options that a standard remote didn't have such as an ir command to select an input without toggling through the sources.

I so far can't find a way to do this with the RM Pro. It has the buttons that you can teach, but as my remote can't do it in one I can't work out how to tell it how to achieve it. Has anyone else encountered this or found a solution?

I use a Roku on HDMI1 and if I select a scene I have set up for a specific channel, it won't switch to terrestrial TV, it just types the channel number but stays on the HDMI1 which is making it challenging for some of the routines I want to run with Alexa

    3-Way Smart WiFi Switch Solution

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:32 AM PST

I have about half a dozen switches in my home so far and a few fans using the Smart Life app. We use Google home, but my kids have Alexa Kid editions so the Smart Home app is great since it works on both.

Anyways, in my living room I have two ceiling fans on dumb switches. Each fan has a light kit. There is not a separate switch for the fans and the light. I need a 3-way switch that works from either switch always and have not had luck finding one. Suggestions?

Having trouble associating an Inovelli red dimmer (zwave/HA)

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 06:36 PM PST

I'm relatively new to HA. All sw is up to date as of this moment. I'm on a pi, HA, z-wave. I'm running the OpenZWave beta (OZWDaemon 0.1.0 (OpenZWave 1.6.1789)) on a Nortek HUSBZB-1 USB Hub.

I chose the OpenZWave beta integration b/c I figured since I'm new I might as well be on the integration that HA is moving towards. I've got 6 devices on my zwave network now (the HUSBZB hub, and five switches: 2 Homeseer 200+ dimmers, 1 Homeseer 200+ switch, 1 GE (Jasco) switch, 1 Inovelli black switch).

I had some issue with the Inovelli black a couple of days ago, and I don't know how, but somehow it got connected.

So the Inovelli red dimmer of concern is installed. Load/Line/Neutral/Ground. It works and dims the appropriate lights.

But I can't get the z-wave network to see it.

Also, Inovelli includes a card iwth the full z-wave Device Specific Key via a qr-code. I can read it, but don't know what to do with it.

What have I been doing? Turn off circuit breaker. In HA go to Configuration/OpenZWave (beta)/Configure/Add Node. Turn on circuit breaker. Use switch. Also try the config button on switch 3x in 3 seconds and try to Add Node again.

Nothing I try in any order seem to work. I tried to exclude the device from HA/zwave by following the instructions, but there is no positive feedback when a device is included so I'm not sure it worked -- I Navigated to OpenZwave (beta) configure menu/Remove Node/3xInovelli-button-A.

I also factory reset the switch (holding button A for 30 seconds). LED went from blue to yellow to red. I figured red was the reset (at about 30 seconds).

    What am I doing wrong?

Garage Door Controller for 4 or more doors?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 06:08 PM PST

I have 4 older garage door openers and I'd like to refit the controls to improve security and features. They are in good condition and have safety sensors, so I'm not considering replacing the entire unit, I would just be wiring in a controller along the lines of the "myq smart garage hub". Specifically the following:

    • One interface for the 4 doors
    • Better security than the original DIP-switch remote (I'm gutting the receiver to plug that security hole)
    • Door switches, with either a notification if left open, or an automatic close
    • Preferably ability to use only on my home wireless network, as I have no need for remote access and would prefer not to depend on internet access at all times

I'm a bit stuck, mainly because the popular controllers seem to only support 3 or fewer doors. Does anyone have a recommendation for networking 4 garage doors?

Anyone with experience painting an August Smart Lock?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:20 AM PST

I'm considering buying one of August's smart locks (either the wifi model or the smart lock pro) but in order to pass the Wife Acceptance Test, the finish of the lock in question would need to match the interior of our front doors hardware. Unfortunately, that hardware is shiny brass, which is nowhere close to the silver or matte black colors of the august products.

Do I really want to spray paint a $200+ gadget? Not really. But out of curiosity, does anyone have experience painting any of August's hardware? I couldn't find anything explicitly saying not to do it on their support site.

A combo smart and dumb light switch.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 04:58 AM PST

I am looking for a solution to an issue I have.

I have a double light switch in my living room, one switch goes to a 4-way circuit to control my kitchen lights and I very much want to keep this on the dumb side of things as both the complexity of the 4-way circuit combined with the criticality of the kitchen lights means I do not want to mess with them.

But the second switch on the panel is a dimmer for my living room lights that I would like to automate for situations such as time of day or movie watching.

Is anyone aware of a such a switch or even a framework that would allow an in-wall solution.

    Some details.
Solid wall installation so no space behind for anything but a standard switch. Based in Ireland so it is a 220 system.
    There is a neutral present.
I would prefer Zigbee, but Wi-Fi could be an option also. For clarity, the two switches are in the one housing, like the one in this link.

Smart plugs (Teckin) - exporting data to csv

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:57 AM PST

I've recently bought 8 Teckin smart plugs and up until now have been using the Smart Life app. The app itself is alright, however I see it doesn't allow for the data to be exported in any manner and doesn't even have a combined summary of all of your devices' usage. You have to go into each device to observe current usage, or historical usage. Can anyone recommend a better app with these shortcomings of the Smart Life app in mind?

How to switch mode on Shelly Duo Bulb via http?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:26 AM PST

    Hi,

I've written a python script to control my Shelly bulbs via http.
All was well until I discovered I can't seem to switch between the white and color modes.

The following http request should change it to the white mode.
    http://shellycolorbulb-8caab555d1af/light/0?mode=white
I get a json response of:
    {"ison":true,"source":"http","has_timer":false,"timer_started":0,"timer_duration":0,"timer_remaining":0,"mode":"color","red":255,"green":1,"blue":0,"white":14,"gain":50,"temp":4750,"brightness":1,"effect":0}

Can't get it to switch to color either.

Hadn't had any problems with other settings I've tried and can switch modes via the app cloud and the bulbs web server.

Any advice would be much appreciated,

    Thank Si.

Motorized Blinds Help Please (USA - MA)

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 04:42 PM PST

My existing blinds broke. The window size is 30 (w) x 72 (l)...

I would like to know what are the thoughts on motorized blinds which work well, but dont burn a hole in the pocket. My current blinds would operate from the top and bottom. So, having that option will be nice.

I do not want anything "smart", just something that can work the blinds via a remote. Have around 4 windows with similar dimensions.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.
