    The fail thread

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:21 PM PDT

Yesterday I made a huge mistake messing with an existent shelly connected to my heater as a thermostat. It was working fine but I thought I could instead use a zigbee device... Now it doesn't work at all even with the old shelly. Fortunately the heater still heats the water, but it won't turn on the central heating anymore. The heater is old so it's kind of difficult to get spare parts for it.

I've been feeling like shit for the last two days. My wife is surprisingly OK with it, specially since the winter is over, but the guilt is horrible.

Most posts here are about success stories and I've had some myself. But failure is part of the process, I guess.

Did you ever break something as expensive as this? What was your biggest fail? How did you cope with it?

    Dumb wifi speakers?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 09:13 PM PDT

There are 'smart' wifi speakers like Amazon Echos and Google stuff, but are there any 'dumb' wifi speakers whose only purpose is to act as an audio output?

I am trying to play the same music in multiple rooms with wireless speakers. I don't need the smart features like 'Hey Alexa', I just need to play from a singular device to all speakers in sync. What are some cheap wifi speakers that could fill this need? Sound quality does not have to be great.

    Hunter Fan Light Issue

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 08:38 PM PDT

Has anyone noticed within the past two or three weeks that the ceiling lights will no longer stay on? I used Siri and the remote and it comes on and a second later it turns off.

Light bulb that can dim to and from 0% smoothly and can be controlled by sending http requests (just lan is fine)?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:39 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm interested in getting a smart light bulb and doing some automation with it to basically create a sunrise alarm light. The reason I don't want to go with an actual alarm light is because I'll create a small android app that will read the alarms on my phone and automatically turn on my light for specific alarms (and because it's way more fun of course).

The issue is that I'm a bit lost in all the options, and it's very hard to find out whether any bulb supports smooth and slow brightness increase from 0, and whether they are accessible by http requests.

Does anyone have some good recommendations or things I should look out for on product pages?

    Thanks

Extend wifi signal across the street to a park

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 08:20 PM PDT

I live across the street from a park and it would be nice to have access to my home wifi network when I'm there. I know this isn't strictly "automation" but it feels like it's something that folks here might have some experience in.

I have second floor windows directly facing the park. There is a loose row of trees on the park side of the street about equal heights with my windows and the main area of the park is mostly open so there are no clusters dense trees or anything else in the way.

I have an eero network in my home. From some brief searching it seems like a directional antenna may be what I want? Even if that's the case I'm interested in (1) whether it's plausible to do what I am hoping for and (2) how to actually integrate it into my existing network.

Hello community, can shed some light if Sonoff Zigbee Bridge can be used to get sensor data from tuya compatible zigbee products. This is so I can use cheap but nice tuya zigbee devices with sonoff bridge + Home Assistant.

Lutron caseta in 2 & 3 gang boxes

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:15 PM PDT

About to hit you guys with a lot at once.
    1. Will the lutron hub work on WiFi or do I need to connect it to the router via Ethernet? How often do the hubs fail?
    2. How hard is it to fit 2 or 3 casetas in the same gang box? (House was built in 2005)
    3. I have some instances where I am replacing just one switch with a caseta. The other switch will be the standard one that you flip up and down. What kind of plate would I need? And what would I type in the search engine to find?
    4. I have 3 separate lights on dual pole. How much harder is it to wire caseta for dual pole?

    NFC Tag help !

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 11:01 AM PDT

Okay so I'm very confused… I've had a few smart accessories for just over a year now but I've not ventured very far. I'm trying to find some NFC tags which I can just stick around the house but there's so many options !! I've read some work out of the box but some have no programming on them so iPhone can't ID them? Preferably I would like plain white ones (doesn't have to be the plastic ones to go on metal) I'm in the U.K. so options for there please ! Thanks in advance !

    Options for in-wall battery remotes?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 04:56 PM PDT

I have a Ring Floodlight Cam that is currently controlled by a normal switch. If you accidentally leave that switch off, the Ring Cam has no power. If I installed a smart switch, the same thing would happen (although I could manually turn it on eventually thru an app). The best solution is to wire the floodlight to be always on. However, I would like to install a remote in place of the current switch so I can turn the light on/off still. I would use Home Assistant to do this.

    • The Hue Dimmer would be great, but it doesn't mount in the wall nicely near other switches, which is the case here (3 switches are in the panel)
    • The Lutron Pico remote is an option, but requires the pro bridge, which is another $125.

Are there any other options here? I basically just need a smart battery powered remote that will fit nicely into a light switch that I can control with Home Assistant.

How loud is the EIGHTSLEEP pod?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 03:48 PM PDT

Hey, I was wondering what is the decibel level on the DecibelX app, or similar, of the EIGHTSLEEP pod running at 15 dC at 30 cm distance from the pod itself? I tried an OOLER but it was too loud as was 50 dB on silent mode at 30 cm, and I hate white noise and love silence during sleep!

Recommendations for Zigbee relays, similar to Shelly

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:31 AM PDT

    Hello everybody.

I have experience with shelly products, but I am now looking to replace everything with Zigbee alternatives. I need relays that can be put behind the traditional wall switches, and can also work in 2-way setup. Also, CE certification is a big plus.

Also, I need at least one high-current relay (at least 15A), for the water heater.

Do you have any recommendations? Thank you!

    Eufy security camera

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 05:02 AM PDT

Hello, just wondering what experiences you may have had with eufy security cameras. I read a lot of good reviews but I also have read some bad ones that make me think I should stay away like late or no motion detection notifications and video record lag. I want to buy them but don't want to be disappointed in purchasing them. I have had nest cameras in the past and I know they work but don't really want to pay the high price plus monthly fee for them. I would prefer battery because I don't really want to be running wires and drilling holes in my house either.

Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.

I have this wiring of my ceiling fan https://www.electricaltechnology.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Wiring-a-3-in-1-Capacitor-with-Ceiling-Fan-Reverse-Switch-Pull-Chain.png and I want to add smart control https://qiachip.com/collections/qiachip-ceiling-fan-light-remote-control-kit/products/qiachip-universal-ceiling-fan-and-lights-wireless-remote-control-kit-with-wifi

Can I connect L (from smart control) directly to motor (from capacitor - red line) and having pull chain and smart control working?

    Thanks.

    R/shedautomation

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:31 AM PDT

As my (joke) title implies, I'm looking for some idea on the best way to incorporate a shed that we're building into my network. I'm going to run electric to the shed, and was thinking of running an Ethernet cable out there as well. Would I need a specific type of cable that is rated for outdoor use, being buried, etc? And could it be placed in the same trench as the electric or would that create some kind of disturbance? The shed will be roughly 75-100 feet from my home.

If I got Ethernet out there, I was going to put an Eero out there to extend the wifi strength over the back yard. Also would likely want to put a steep pair of Sonos speakers out there and some Hue lights. Any other automation projects anyone could recommend for an outdoor shed? It'll be used as a tool shed/project shed. Not a place I'll be just hanging out in, but someplace I may be spending some time in while I tinker with things. Anything other than Ethernet that would be recommended to set it up for future ideas?

    360 S6 robot vacuum

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:23 AM PDT

I have a 360 S6 robot vacuum. Lately it is being offline a lot (purple/pink light instead of blue light). In 24 hours, I would say more than half of the time it is offline and the other time it is online. Usually during the day it is blue (online) but later starting from the evening it turns purple (offline). Unfortunately that's when I need to use my vacuum.

The issue is not with my wifi, because the router is showing that it is online 24/7, even when it is purple (offline). I reset the wifi anyways, but that did not make any difference.

It is basically not able to connect to its home server at 360. Looks like server is going up and down multiple times in 24 hours.

Anyone else having this kind of issue? Or knows how to fix it.

Triggering Google Home Routines with Physical Button

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 05:54 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I know this has been asked and answered (answer was no) in years gone by, but I'm hoping something has changed. My home automation is quite simple, and I would prefer not to get into a whole bunch of new soft/hardware, but will if I have to for this use case.

I recently setup a home theater in my basement, and there is a lot of different stuff plugged in all over the place, and turning it all on manually is a hassle. Currently I say "Hey Google, Turn on the Basement" and it turns on 4 lamps (hue), turns on power to 4 power reclining chairs, uses a Chromecast to turn on the Receiver and Projector, and even turns on a little air freshener thingy.

When I leave "Hey Google, Turn off the Basement" reverses all that. It works great, and is definitely one of the most useful "Automations" I have set up to date, and is one of the first times my non-techy friends can really see the value.

However, I would love to be able to just click a button like a light switch on the way in and out. In a perfect world I would be able to click "On" on a Hue dimmer switch to turn everything on and "Off" on the same switch to turn it all off on the way out. In a perfect world that switch would also retain its ability to dim the lights in the meantime, but that's not necessary. Even if it was just a single button that did the on/off that would work too.

What's my best (and simplest) option here? I havn't completely gone down the rabbit hole of remotes like the Harmony Hub, and maybe that's my best solution, but I definitely like the elegance of a single button where a light switch would normally go.

    Thanks!
