Trying to identify a port on my robot vacuum Posted: Hey, so I have been looking at rooting my vacuum cleaner as I'm not too fond of the Chinese home-phoning. I saw this port behind the dust collector bin: https://i.imgur.com/PiRRQwF.jpg and in the manual it says "Software upgrade connector (only for professional use)", which sounds pretty interesting. Normally the vacuum is updated through the Smart Life app. Any ideas at all? I first thought it could be some kind of 10 pin JTAG but the notches in the plastic "slot" make me wonder if this could be some other kind of connector. I haven't found anything on Google regarding other models with ports like these. This is a new robot vacuum that has been manufactured in China and branded by this one specific small store in Sweden and, therefore, there is nothing to find on Google at all. The MAC address points to Schenzhen Technology Co Ltd. and uses the Smart Life/Tuya cloud. Since it is extremely similar to the Xiaomi vacuums, I thought it could be a Xiaomi-copy but with a new name, but the rooting methods for those do not work - python-miio cannot discover the devices. Overall the security seems pretty OK - during the pairing process, port 53 (TCP) is open. During normal operations, only the Tuya port (I believe 6667 or 6668) is open. I have tried sniffing the traffic and it is encrypted with no initial HTTP connections. I guess the only thing I haven't tried yet is tearing it apart and looking at the components to further investigate what kind of hardware this is. I'd be happy for any ideas at all, no matter how wild. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Recommendations for what to use for my own security system? Posted: With Nest Secure being discontinued I've sold off my setup and I'm looking to start anew with a home made version. What I need to start is to replicate what I had with the Nest:
I don't mind spending money if they are worth the price, but I'd also like to eventually outfit the windows (8 of them) on my first floor with sensors as well. Z Wave Plus is a must. I would be getting these into an existing Home Assistant setup. [link] [comments]
Help needed with flashing lohas A19 bulbs. Posted: I have few Lohas A19 19W bulbs. They work on wifi. I read somewhere we can flash them to use locally and connect to HA. Can you share the guide for me to follow? I am no expert on soldering and have no tools. Preferably OTA. Thank u for reading and commenting. Have a good day! [link] [comments]
Good Experience with Lutron Serena Shades Posted: I had a very large custom shade that I bought from Serena three years ago. Due to the size, it was very expensive. Almost $1,500. Early on in owning it, we had moved our Christmas tree too close to it, so it was hitting a part of it and not coming down all the way. Well that caused one of the strings to get tangled, and it would always come down lopsided from that point on. In my terrible attempt to fix it, I wound up snapping that string. So it would lower completely lopsided at that point. So I put it in the up position and just dealt with not having that shade work anymore. Finally, yesterday, after a few years of it not working I decided to call to see if I could send it in to be repaired. Without asking any questions, they just told me to take it down and throw it out and they would send me a new one. It was literally 5 minutes total on the phone with them. Their stuff is expensive, but I was amazed at the level of customer service and just wanted to share. [link] [comments]

Smart IR blaster recommendation Posted: I'm currently trying to simplify my mom's TV setup without overspending. I convinced her to get rid of her overpriced cable package after getting her an Apple TV (she likes the airplay feature). Her Sharp TV doesn't have ARC and her Denon Amp predates HDMI and her preferred remote (Function101 button remote) doesn't allow it to connect to more than one other device + the AppleTV. The current setup allows her to turn on and off the amp, control its volume and turn off the TV via turning off the Apple TV. The ONLY thing this remote cannot do is turn ON the TV and I'm going bald trying to figure out a simple one remote solution for her. Harmony is out of the question as it's not her preferred remote (also rumours about the system being discontinued has Ben concerned) and she's not about to go out and buy a new TV or amp when hers work fine. So I was thinking maybe some kind of IR hub that allows the TV to go on when the amp is trigger to go on. That's all in needs to do. Any recommendations? Thank you. [link] [comments]
Shallowest zigbee or Wi-Fi smart switch Posted: I just got a GE/Jasco Enbrighten smart switch but at $50 up a switch, it hurts the wallet. Has any Chinese company ripped off the design yet? They're made there anyways. Just need to save some money. By the way, the GE switch fit where my tp-link kasa did not. Surely He is not the only ones with a shallow switch still? Converting mechanical 24v thermostat with smart switch Posted: So, I've been embarking on an adventure of electronics and engineering since purchasing my first house, and I'm looking for some guidance and potentially part recommendations for digitizing a zone valve thermostat. System is as follows: boiler in basement with multiple zone valves, each carries 24v with a two wire pair to thermostat in bedroom, hallway, and basement. The hallway valve was mixed in with attic AC unit wiring and that thermostat is a normal ecobee (using AC power). The bedroom and basement thermostats are simple mercury mechanical thermostats that (unless I'm mistaken) simply act as switches and close the 24v circuit to send a call for heat to the boiler and open the zone valve. Ergo, would it not be a somewhat simple task to replace the mechanical thermostat with some smart switch/relay board and a temperature sensor, so I could close the circuit "digitally"? If so, what are people's recommendations for switches and relays? I'm not very familiar with this part of the automation space and have only light experience with hearing brands like Shelly and Sonoff. Is this one of those things where the old mechanical standby is just something to leave alone? Thanks in advance for any clarification and advice. Cheers. [link] [comments]

Will a circuit breaker prevent any damage in a 2006 house from switch errors Posted: I'm going to be installing new smart switches (and possibly some of those neat outlets with a usb on the side). My house is in USA & built in 2006. If I hose up the install, will the circuit breaker stop any damage? [link] [comments]
Please help with mesh wifi on 2.4 ghz Posted: Hi everyone, can anyone recommend a good mesh wifi system for a 3000 sq ft house that separates the 2.4 and 5 ghz bands? My cable modem/router is in bridge mode and we currently have Nest wifi with 2 access points but our smart switches and smart fans (Fanimation wifi) don't connect (I assume it's because Nest doesn't split the bands so they can't find the 2.4 or just that my phone connects to the 5 and can't communicate with the 2.4 devices?). When we first got into home automation, I had the bands split and just used the cable modem/router and set up was a breeze but. Now nothing works. I think we just need to replace the Nest mesh wifi with a system that allows us to split the bands and connect appropriately. I've read up on systems but can't seem to see if the bands can be manually split... If you haven't been able to tell, I'm new to this (and not very good at it!) and would appreciate any help from you all who certainly know way more than me! Thanks! [link] [comments]
Best way to keep a fire tablet's screen awake? Posted: I bet there's at least one or two (dozen) people in this sub who are using a fire tablet as part of their home automation set up. I'm using my fire tablet (7th gen) as a display for a webcam and I'd like to keep the screen on for longer than the maximum of 30 minutes that the settings allow. Any tips? [link] [comments]

Looking for a button with a light. Z-wave preferable, but Zigbee or wifi also work. Posted: Hello, I'm looking for a button with a controllable light in it. Kind of like Fibaro's The Button, but one I can make light up. Anyone have any suggestions? I want to make a "feed the dog" reminder. I want to run a routine on my hub to light up the light on a schedule signaling that it's time to feed the dog. Then, whoever in the house sees it feeds the dog and hits the button to register that the task is complete, thus turning off the light. Certainly, I don't expect this logic and scheduling to live in the device, so I could use a separate controllable light combined with The Button, but I'd rather it all be in one neat package. Thanks! Posted: I am looking to install z wave dimmers in a basement I am finishing, and I would like to control the dimming from two locations. I am familiar with zooz 3 way switches that have the dumb on/off slave switch, but have not seen a solution that allows dimming at two locations. Does this exist? [link] [comments]
Posted: My garage freezer is on a GFCI, unfortunately, and occasionally it will trip without notice. If this isn't discovered within a few days it's a big problem. Does anyone have suggestions on smart plugs that can notify me via email or text when this happens? Or do you have any other suggestions to remedy the problem? [link] [comments]
I messed up-but how bad? (Garage Door automation) Posted: Tl;dr: I can I make a non-myQ opener "smart"? I just hired a person to finish the installation of my garage door project that I've been on for over a year. I am fully on the Apple HomeKit system, and from what I understood back when I was buying my garage door, you didn't have to buy a "myQ" or whatever door-that was all available to add after the fact. So I thought I'd save the $80 or whatever and buy the cheapest door lowes had:A Craftsman 1/2 HP chain drive. It does not not have MyQ. I also ordered this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08GG1H7TV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It's a HomeKit door adapter (sold here as "refoss" brand, although I've seen it with other names) Well after the installer left I attached the box to the wiring as instructed-and it didn't work to open the door. the sensor works for uptown, and I can hear the relay inside the box click, but it's not triggering the door opening. I experimented a bit with trying to short the contacts to see if it would trigger the door, and no luck. The wire to the door opener by the garage door is just a simple 2-wire bell connection-but there is a small LED in the button so clearly the power is flowing all the time. So I guess the button works by making a differential? we're past my pay grade here. But is there maybe a way I can make this work? the wireless opener that came with the kit seems to be a simple button. could I connect to that? any engineers want to geek out with me? I bought the opener more than 5 months ago and I know lowes can be very generous about returns, but I don't know how hard it would be to install the myQ compatible model, considering I had to hire someone to install the existing one. (it was a complicated install though-I was not swapping out an old one.) Thank you for any help! [link] [comments]
Novice HA - need advice for new home Posted: Hoping you can share your opinions about what I should do at my new home given some experience with my last. At my last home, I had a Nest Thermostat, 2 Nest Protect, Nest Camera, 3 google assists, 3 controllable lights, and a Schlage lock that worked with Wink (my hub). Once Google acquired Nest the only thing my hub was linked with was the lock. Once Wink started charging money, I dropped it, as the service it was providing for our family wasn't really necessary--no outside people coming in, I didn't care when my adult kids were coming and going, etc. At the new house, I have all the above except the Schlage keypad, which at some point I will get one or two keyless pads. Schlage has keypads that now link to their own app but it would be nice to have an umbrella app. In the new house I want to add:
Ideas for products would be great and obviously a hub. I do have google home and apple home apps. Right now I am using google home. Thanks for your ideas/advice! [link] [comments]
