Home had all wifi only smart switches and sockets. How to avoid congested wifi? Posted: 26 Mar 2021 11:37 AM PDT EDIT: Thank you all so much for the help! We ended up using another router as an access point, as it was the cheapest solution for us. Normal devices are connected to the original router, all smart device connected to the access point. So far everything's running smoothly. Fingers crossed it stays way. You are all so awesome, thank you! A relative of mine is setting up their smart home, and has 30+ wifi (no z-wave or zigbee) smart switches and outlets. They have a pretty great Netgear Nighthawk r6700v2 router. However, as they've added more smart devices the Wi-Fi has gotten less and less reliable. It constantly drops devices, or won't let them connect at all. We just performed a factory reset on the router, and connected only essential devices such as laptops and phones. Wi-Fi is working great again, getting 300 mbs down/ 50mbs up. I'd hate to run into the same problem when connecting the smart devices again. Any tips? Would a second router dedicated to just the smart devices help? TL;DR House has 30+ Wi-Fi only smart devices, router can't handle them all despite being a pretty good router. Looking for tips on how to streamline and keep the wifi from getting clogged up. Has anyone used Frient products? Are they reliable? Posted: 26 Mar 2021 04:55 AM PDT I found an interesting zigbee home energy monitor by this company Frient, but I can't seem to find much around reviews or thoughts on the product or the company in general. Has anyone here used their products before and confirm they work OK? This is the specific product I was looking at for reference. I also plan to control this via smartthings. It does say it should work with smartthings though, and I can see Frient as a brand in the app. [link] [comments]
Bluetooth smart bulbs vs Smart switch? Posted: 26 Mar 2021 08:11 PM PDT I have 6 can lights along one wall of my living room. They are hooked up to a like triple light switch with dimmers. I'd like to be able to turn these on and off with Alexa because I'm lazy and I like things to be on timers cause I fall asleep on the couch a lot. I looked into the smart switches, which I think I would prefer, but installing them seems to be beyond my DIY limits. I do know an electrician, a former coworker, who I trust to give me a fair price on things. In my home office I did a couple regular plug-in pendant lights with Bluetooth bulbs and those have worked out well but I don't use them super often, and the outlet theyre plugged into isn't linked to a switch so Bluetooth bulbs seemed to be the best option there. For the living room, are there pros/cons to going with smart bulbs vs smart switches? Obviously the smart bulbs would be more expensive to replace when they burn out. I mostly just use 2 of the 6. I'm assuming for the smart bulbs to work the switches for them would have to be turned on all the time. Would that use more electricity even if the bulbs themselves are on the same amount of time? Any insight would be much appreciated! Thanks! [link] [comments]

Does anybody make non ugly Zigbee sensors that are also still in business? Posted: 26 Mar 2021 02:43 PM PDT Most of this stuff is ugly and huge. Why is that? The DIY alarm companies make some pretty nice looking sensors. Can anybody recommend sensors for Hubitat that look nice? I'm looking for both door sensors and motion sensors. Zigbee preferred because the general consensus seems to be that they trigger faster and I'd be using these for light automations. Also what's up with the supply problems? I've spent the last week reading and reading review after review and most of the suggestions are no longer manufactured and people are buying them on Ebay. Ebay? Eww! Some of the nicer looking ones like NCYE's ceiling mount are back ordered until June. What's the deal? Is this a dying industry? I was all excited to get a Hubitat and start playing, but I'm starting to 2nd guess this now. [link] [comments]
I've completed phase 1 of my IoT/Smart home plans Posted: 26 Mar 2021 07:05 AM PDT For phase 1 I wanted to get absolutely every system integrated into home assistant and exposed out to other interfaces - alexa, siri, etc This is now done and demoed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq3-IxhW_os Vacuum, Alarm, CCTV, heating, hot water, blinds, oven, drier, washing machine, cooker hob, light bulbs, light switches, garden lights, cabinet lights, television, all integrated :D Phase 2 involves adding the smarts/automation. We have some already like if all our devices are disconnected from wifi arm the alarm in away mode, if any one of them is connected disarm, if the front door opens and its dark out turn on the hall way lights, if its dark out and motion is detected on any walk way turn on the lights, on arming the alarm (night or away but not home mode) turn everything (Tvs, lights, etc) off. I look forward to getting 6 months worth of data and manual actions to take a look at the overall state and to spot threads that lead to manual actions been taken. [link] [comments]
Router recommendation for hotspot (no ethernet port) to connect ST/Arlo? (Small 400sqft cabin) Posted: 26 Mar 2021 10:18 PM PDT Sorry if this is more of a /r/techsupport question. I'm done paying far too much for useless satellite internet at my tiny cabin and trying a T-Mobile hotspot instead. I hadn't realized until a few days ago that the Smartthings and Arlo hubs are connected via ethernet to the modem. Does anyone have any recommendations for a router that can bridge the connection from the hotspot to the hubs? Any reason not to just get this $20 TP-Link? I just have one Arlo camera, motion sensor, and a couple door sensors. Cheers! [link] [comments]
ZigBee water flow detector. Does it exist? Posted: 26 Mar 2021 03:28 PM PDT Hi, For a while now, I've been searching for a device that detects water flow. This would be very useful to turn on an air vent when someone starts showering for example. I haven't found any device that can do this. Does anyone know a product that does this (preferably ZigBee)? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Is the neutral wire of my three way switches already plugged in or do I not have one? Posted: 26 Mar 2021 02:45 PM PDT Hi. I recently got a smart switch for my home office so I can quickly control my overhead lights. Long story short, the previous owner was a professional handyman who dabbled in things he didn't fully understand. He claimed to have finished the basement three times and all that. Anyway, all that said, I assume he may have plugged the neutral wire into the three way switch, but I could be wrong. Does anyone know what I am looking at here? It seems pretty straightforward. I can provide more pictures if needed. And I did not see any white wires anywhere else. [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Mar 2021 07:41 PM PDT Doing preliminary research for a future remodel of a modest bathroom. Thinking about using a konnected panel for some hardwired sensors. Door and window I'd like to be invisible. But I was also thinking of a motion sensor as well. This is the smallest I've found so far: https://www.legrandintegratedsolutions.com/products/flushmount-mini-motion-sensor-5x25 Have only found a price in one place but wasn't thrilled with it. Are there any other comparable options out there? [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Mar 2021 04:59 AM PDT A few months back I bought and received a shark ion robot RV1001AE. It worked awesome for about 2 months but then I had an issue which deemed it unusable. I spoke with Amazon and they agreed and sent me a brand new one while I returned the broken one. Amazon sent me a slightly different model this time, a RV1101AE. The robot itself is the same, but the dustbin is completely different. Instead of the whole top coming off, a collection bin pops out from the side. I'm trying to figure out what's safe for me to wash, filter wise, and what isn't. The dustbin itself tells me to wash the large cylinder filter once a month, but I can't find it anywhere! In fact, I can't even find a reference to a model 1101AE, let alone a manual. The manual on my shark app and in the box shows the original style dustbin where the whole top pops off. I've confined the model number off the bottom of the robot. [link] [comments]
AutoVentiliation in bathroom with Humidity sensor Posted: 26 Mar 2021 08:15 AM PDT I'm trying to hash out a plan for a 3way switch in my bathroom for the ventilation fan. Right now, there's the old fashion wall switch, but I was thinking about adding a Pi, ESP8266 (if I add Wifi) or a Stm32 board with the DHT11 (humidity sensor) to optionally power-on the fan. I was thinking about how to down step the 120v to 3.3-5v for the board--use a doorbell transformer to bring it to 15-30v and then a buck converter bringing it down to 3.3-5v, depending on the board. I'm guessing to power the vent fan from the board, what kind of switch or relay would I need? Also, so that the sensor doesn't turn off the vent fan already on during a shower, is there a hardware path to make that 3way switch sort of one way? The kicker: what about a type of gas(odor) sensor, for you know--#2? [link] [comments]
Smart Lighting options for a large house Posted: 26 Mar 2021 05:14 PM PDT Hello. I'm currently in the process of planning a move from a smaller house to a much larger house. My current house is primarily using Philips hue (around 20 bulbs) and a small set of Zwave dimmers (3 or 4). My new house will have at least 100 bulbs (some of them are a whole room where one switch turns on 8 bulbs). A lot of the bulbs are BR30. I'm in the US. I'm looking at what my options are and I don't think I can continue to use Philips Hue unless I do two hubs (I also don't want to pay for that many more bulbs). I'm currently using the Hue bulbs with mostly white tunable bulbs. I don't have much of a need for RGB colors, what I really use is 5000k during the day and 2700k at night. I'm looking for suggestions on what my options are. I've looked at some of the wifi bulbs and they look promising but I'm worried about how many devices I'll have on the network. I could look at other non-Hue zigbee bulbs but I'm a little worried about compatibility. I had a terrible experience with Lightify zigbee bulbs. I'd consider more zwave in-wall switches to control groups, but I'd loose the tunable white ability. I also have alot of door sensors and motion sensors to automate all the lights. What kind of recommendations do people have for a setup like this? [link] [comments]
Looking For People Who Have Installed/Used Lutron's Products Posted: 26 Mar 2021 04:53 PM PDT I'm looking for people who'd be willing to talk to me about their experiences with installing and using their products - preferably for DIY projects. The interview (conducted via Zoom) will only take about 30 minutes, and any level or expertise or familiarity with their products would be fine. All information provided would be kept anonymous Please reach out to me if you're interested! [link] [comments]
What are smart outlets useful for? Posted: 26 Mar 2021 03:19 PM PDT So, I'm pretty well sold on smart switches and smart bulbs but not 100% on smart outlets. Mostly because most of the devices you plug into them utilize a manual switch that is off by default. In other words, you have to plug it in AND THEN hit "on" (like a dumb coffee maker). So, what are some useful use cases for smart plugs? Please convince me. [link] [comments]
Smart control for fluorescent lighting Posted: 26 Mar 2021 09:40 AM PDT I was thinking of adding simple off/on control for my fluorescent lighting fixture in the garage. There is currently a switch in the hall next to the door going into the garage. Since you don't see much about fluorescent smart lighting can you just change out the switch to a smart one? Zwave hub/ control panel recommendations Posted: 26 Mar 2021 09:35 AM PDT I need a hub and control panel for several zwave devices .I do not want security alarms with this hub. Also prefer a control panel so that I don't have to rely only on my mobile devices. I am looking as Qolsys IQ panel as an option. Any other recommendations? [link] [comments]
Remote switch using existing (live only) Posted: 26 Mar 2021 09:00 AM PDT In my kitchen I have a traditional in-wall switch to control the ceiling lamp. I would like to add under cabinet lights. These lights aren't on the same wire. I would like to command all lights with my single traditional switch. I was thinking of a remote switch controlled by an emitter lodged in the traditional switch casing. Do you know of an emitter that only requires live wire and that will send 'on' signal when powered and 'off' signal when I switch off the traditional switch? [link] [comments] |
