Smart Wall Switches - Zigbee or Z-Wave

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 04:39 PM PDT

Hey all you HA experts. I am planning on adding 15-20 smart wall switches and would prefer they pair to my Hub as opposed to adding more devices on my wifi. I really like Kasa and Wemo but they are both wifi. As I plan to soon add a Smartthings hub I would use that as the control point as I already have a dozen Zigbee bulbs running (on another proprietary hub). However, I have not found much to choose from that use Zigbee or Z-wave (at least at a reasonable cost). Any ideas or recommendations?

    ESP 8266 and Mr. Coffee

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 06:28 PM PDT

Hi. Earlier this week I accidentally broke the carafe for my cheap Mr. Coffee maker. I immediately had to buy a fancier coffee maker after I had already bought a replacement carafe due to WAF. So my question is, if I wanted to wire an ESP8266 to the buttons of the old coffee maker to make it accessible through node red or something, how would I got about doing that? I've been looking online for tutorials because surely I can't be the only one who's done this, but nothing has seemed to be exactly what I'm trying to do here. Seems like I should be able to control a relay board to mimic all the buttons on the coffee maker remotely. Thanks.

    Tower fan with manual switch?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:04 AM PDT

Hello all I have a smart zwave outlet plug. I have a fan I put on at night to sleep. I want alexa to be able to turn on the fan when I say goodnight and turn it off in the am when I say good morning. But the problem is the fan has an electronic button or whatever. So it doesn't stay in the "on" position so to speak so turning on the fan outlet only powers the fan but it won't turn on.

    Ideas?

Looking to switch standard (dumb) smoke detectors for smart ones (apartment living)

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 11:29 PM PDT

    Hi,

We live in an apartment with three hardwired smoke detectors. They seem to use the standard "First Alert" style rectangle plastic plug into the detectors. These are basic "dumb" units but are somehow interconnected with a central alert system and larger alarm (I think that works in the way its internally wired because it's certainly not due to the dumb smoke detectors and they interchangeably use different models of detector).

I had the idea that since these use the same basic rectangle plastic plug that some of the smart units use, I could just switch these out for a hardwired smart smoke/CO2 detector that would do a better job of filtering out false positives and also make it easier to shut off the alarm when it did happen. Does anyone see a reason why this wouldn't work to swap these out for the smart ones? I could keep the old ones to swap back for inspection purposes but I don't think we have CO2 monitors in our apartment building and we use natural gas for heating, so I'd really like to add this.

It looks like the Nest Protect might use a different plastic plug into the unit. I've tried to find a converter so I could just use the existing wiring, as is, but I can't seem to find that. I was hoping to just use the existing plug there (which it seems the First Alert Onelink units use) but from the little I've gleaned thus far, it seems that Nest is far more reliable.

Anyway, the ones we have don't work very well at all. We get false positives when simply cooking, broiling/baking, and when washing up pans. Seriously. Our maintenance guys were so fed up they told us to just unplug the primary one in the hallway and close the bedroom doors when cooking. So, they really don't do any good when not plugged in.

Lastly, any thoughts on the Nest Protect vs Onelink? I'm a little concerned about the Onelink reviews. Ouch. Thanks for any help. :)

Do all devices have to be Z-Wave 700 series to gain benefits?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 11:01 PM PDT

If I remember correctly, going from Z-Wave to Z-Wave Plus (500 series) required all devices to be Z-Wave Plus before you would be able to take advantage of the benefits (e.g. better battery life, increased range, etc.). Is this the same with going from Z-Wave 500 series to Z-Wave 700 series?

    Controlling Zwave Lights from PC

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 06:42 PM PDT

So I just ordered Inovelli's Red Series LED Light Strip (https://inovelli.com/red-series-smart-led-strip/?locale=en) with the intent of using it both as monitor backlighting and integrated into a floating shelf that will sit above my PC monitor.

The lights will be integrated into my SmartThings system and controllable via Alexa and maybe by a smart button or switch at my computer workstation.

However, ideally I'd like to integrate the monitor backlighting into my monitors functioning. Something like this: https://ambiscreen.tv/

This seems like it should be doable from my PC with the right software and a zwave module/controller for my PC, but this will be my first zwave step outside SmartThings and Alexa. Can anyone point me in the right direction and/or tell me if such a thing is doable?

Velux electric or solar outside shutters, how to control?

Velux electric or solar outside shutters, how to control?

Hi! I am new to the home automation / IoT community, so forgive me for maybe the noob questions.

I am going to install new Velux windows with electric Velux outside shutters.
Also planning on using Home Assistant to control all later IoT devices and flows.

I have these questions regarding operating these shutters:

    • they operate via the IO Homecontrol standard, so how can I send a signal to open/close them ? Z-wave, Zigbee, ... Shelly ?
    • can I read the current state of the shutters (opened/closed)?
    • what hardware do I need for this to work ? Do I still need Velux hardware like the KLF 200 https://www.velux.com/klf200 or KUX ?
    • there are 2 types of shutters: wired shutters or shutters with a small solar panel. Which one should I choose? Any (dis)advantages for either?

Thanks so much for your input.

I have two Amcrest cameras that I want to use with Alexa. I'm not great at automation or any sort of programming, and for some reason I can only get one camera to work at a time.

Anyone else able to get two Amcrest cameras to work with Alexa without paying for their cloud service?

I've been working at this for weeks, so any help would be appreciated!

Looking for reliable Zigbee motion sensors, please recommend

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:25 PM PDT

Hello, I have been using Sonoff motion(stock firmware) zigbee motion sensors for past few weeks(fairly new to home automation).

I find them very unreliable when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius. Also, they are sending update to the bridge one minute after motion has been detected, which is also inconvenient for number of reasons.

I am looking for more reliable and customizable motion sensors! If you are using something reliable please share :).

I have Sonoff bridge with Tasmota on it and all other sonoff devices have stock firmware.

Alternatives to Fing? Mobile apps that painlessly scan your wifi to find what devices are connected

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:50 PM PDT

I've used Fing when setting up devices for years, but in the last year it's become bloated with too many paid features and the free features have bugs. Anyone have any good, stripped-down alternatives to suggest?

Controlling water level's and pump activation?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:07 PM PDT

2 Water tanks in my home, the backup one that its underground, and a service main tank in the roof.

Normally the city service can supply the top tank and everything works, but during outages or low pressure days, we need to pump water from backup to main tank.

I would like a system that can check water levels and activate / turn off pump when required.

    - Check top tank water level and turn ON pump when needed.

    - Pump will turn ON only if backup tank has enough water.

    - Pump will turn off when top tank level its adequate.

    - Can check levels with a LED display, or maybe even PC / App

Ive seem some local options with micro controllers made by small operation shop's, but they seem sketchy and cannot connect with any automation. Most of the systems use metal probes or floaters to determine the water levels. I do not like that, as the probes need some resins and plastic insulation, don't want to put bunch of plastics in the water that we drink. Also they dont seem very reliable.

A contactless system that could work with ultrasound sensors or simillar would be ideal.

Are good BR30 bulbs that work with Lutron Caseta dimmers available anywhere?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 07:05 PM PDT

We're building a new home, and need about 48 BR30 3000K ~65W equivalent bulbs for the cans. Best I can tell from the Lutron site, I should be looking at GE or Ecosmart. I haven't been able to find them anywhere that I can buy enough for the house. Would rather not be buying singles or 2-packs.

Are there any other bulbs that work well with the Caseta dimmers (no buzzing/flickering) and have a good dimming range?

I'm kind of afraid I'm going to end up having problems with whatever I get. I've been able to find some brands in bulk, like Sunco, but the selection is limited and I can't find much info on which ones work best.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

[Help] Neato D7 ~16 months old. Consistent charging issues, can't power on.

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 06:33 AM PDT

Since my D7 was about 10 months old I started to have charging issues.

I tried to contact the warranty since we were still within the 1 year warranty mark. I honestly had some of the worst customer service I've ever had. Took weeks to get a proper response even though I provided all the necessary info (pictures, receipt of purchase, serial number, etc)

After a couple of weeks of no response I figured it was the battery. So I replaced the battery with the official neato battery. Then that didn't work so I replaced the base.

Turns out the base seemingly fixed it. It would still have charging issues occasionally and the robot would have a loud high pitch whining noise when charging but at least it worked.

Now the exact same issues are happening.

I'm at a crossroad of how much effort is really worth salvaging this robot or should I just look to upgrade to a different robot?

We've enjoyed the hell out of this thing when it works, which is why I'm willing to buy a new one, but Neatos crappy customer service has me wary of buying a new Neato.

    Thoughts?

    Sound activated smart devices

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 09:34 AM PDT

I'm trying to find a device that could be activated by the beeps made by our oven or Instant Pot. Essentially, we'd like to be notified when the oven is preheated, or the Instant Pot has completed cooking.

Any devices you would recommend? I'd also be open to ways to program a Google Home to respond.

    LED strip to pins adapter?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 02:04 PM PDT

Hi, playing with some smart LED strip lights for my under-cabinets, and looking to extend them to the other side of my stove. I bought some 1M extensions, but they are pins-to-pins. So, I'm looking for a way to connect the "bare" end of a cut strip directly to pins, to then connect to the extension. (Jumpers aren't long enough and I don't want to chain a bunch of them.)

Can't seem to find anything that will simply convert the cut end to 4 pins.

There's some jumpers that go from bare end to 4 pins, but again, I don't want to chain the jumpers.

Kind of surprised I can't seem to find a simple non-jumper "strip to pins" connector.

    (No soldering pls)

Incidentally.... if I were to use a bare-to-bare snap connector, would this work with a male-to-male pin connector on one end? It doesn't look like it would be secure.

Looking for simple hardware to run Home Assistant software on. Don't need any fancy hub features and don't want to fuss with a Raspberry Pi.

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:27 PM PDT

I am using some Shelly smart relays and temperature sensors to turn some duct booster fans on based on some simple logic.

I was considering buying the Home Assistant Blue but it's pricey and want to comsider what other off-the-shelf products would work as well. Would one of those little smart speakers work?

I already have a Nest thermostat and Nest Cam Outdoors.
