Help on what outdoor floodlight to get

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 08:51 PM PDT

So I currently have a floodlight that is pretty high up in my back yard. Currently, a light switch turns it on or off and there is no motion sensor on it. I really would like motion detection, dusk to dawn options, and the ability to leave the lights on. I can't seem to find any floodlights (with the exception of the $250 Ring floodlight cam maybe) that do this. The ones that offer this functionality on Amazon require manually hitting a switch (which would require a ladder). Ring does have a wired smart floodlight but apparently there isn't an 'always on' option for it. So I feel like I have two options:

    1) Purchase the Ring Floodlight Cam for $250 which offers all of these features (I think).

    2) Install a smart switch for the floodlight, use HomeAssistant timers and a separate camera/motion sensor for motion detection. However, I would use a Caseta switch and would a dimmer switch work to control a floodlight properly?

Any other thoughts or ideas would be helpful. Or maybe someone can tell me that the Ring Smart Lighting floodlight does let you keep lights on permanently thought the app.

How many "smart devices" do you have?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:50 PM PDT

Before buying my first house last October, all I had was a couple of Google Home Mini's and Echo Dot's, 2 bulbs, 1 Chromecast, and 2 Fire TV's in our apartment. I had been wanting to go bigger for a while but didn't care to until I owned my own home. So I finally did that and after a month I had around 20 devices and couldn't imagine adding that much more. Fast forward to now and I'm up to a total of 63 total devices that show up in either my GH and Alexa app, or both.

I remember watching smart home videos on YT with some of them saying they had over 50 or 60 devices I thought that was crazy and why on earth would anyone have that many. But here I am with 63 myself. I must admit, it's easy to rack up a very high number when you want almost every switch/light source to be smart and you start putting a door/motion sensor almost everywhere lol.

I'm making this thread now because I think I've reached the point where I'm mostly content. I'll probably hit 70 at some point, but that's going to be a while since I can't really think of much more that I want or need. Those earlier months were fun though when I would find out about something new and wanted to try it. So a new package was arriving almost every week or two for a while lol.

Best smart thermostat to integrate with an automatic Aprilaire humidifier

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:12 PM PDT

The subject title pretty much says it all. I was told I need a smart thermostat since I have decided to get the Aprilaire 600 automatic humidifier. Need one that integrates with it well because it needs to know when to turn on the humidifier and what setting to put it all based on the outside temperature and the humidity both inside and outside the house.

    Any suggestions?

    Controlling a dimming lamp

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:46 PM PDT

Hi reddit! I need help/direction on what product(s) to buy.

    My goal is this:

    • Touch phone to NFC tag
    • a bulb in a lamp automatically turns on / dims up.

(I was hoping to use apple homekit / iOS shortcuts)

I realize just having a lamp turn on won't be the hardest thing to do, but it's seemingly difficult to automate the lamp to turn on at dimmer level 0% and go up to 100% over 2-3 seconds. A gradual lighting effect is what I'm aiming for.

I know there are HomeKit/Alexa/Google Nest power outlet plugs, but I'm guessing that route only allows a binary approach, its either on or off.

I'd like to add that I've seen smart bulbs themselves can be HomeKit/Alexa/Nest controlled but I can't seem to find the type of bulb I want. You see, my goal is to gradually dim up a black-light bulb.

    Any tips? Thanks.

    1980 house 3 way switch

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:02 PM PDT

The top switch controls the kitchen fluorescent light and the bottom one is a 3 way switch for a chandelier light above the kitchen table. The thing is, if I use this switch to turn it off, the other switch (on the other side of the room) won't turn it back on. Any ideas why? Also, I'm going to test the capped wire that doesn't seem to go anywhere. Could that be a neutral wire?

None of the switches in this house make a lot of sense. There are 3 way and 4 way switches all over the place in 1-3 gauge boxes. Only a few have neutral wires otherwise I'd just replace them all with smart switches, leave the connection always on, and have the switches control smart bulbs.

I'm already at the point of just capping all the switches together to force an always on connection and have every light voice operated.

    Harmony Elite with Apple TV

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:47 PM PDT

Guys please try and help me as best as possible I've tried everything I can think of.. I have a Harmony remote and while I love it when it works I am having one major issue.

Here is my full complete set up of devices that I am using with the remote:

LG CX LG S9NYG Soundbar using ARC DIRECTV DVR HR54-700 Knivo 501bn HDMI switch Xbox series X Apple TV 4 non 4K

The problem: Whenever I use my watch TV activity, my Apple TV turns on. I have disabled CEC on all my devices except for the tv because it needs it for the sound bar. I have tried all kinds of delays, power and input settings. For the life of me, I cannot figure this out. I have no idea what else to do. Can anybody suggest anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Calex smart remote control alternative

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 12:35 PM PDT

Hi, I bought a set of calex lights and a remote control which is very useful to turn lights on and off and dim them.

However I was wondering if I can get something that would allow me to set up scenes with something like one, two or three touches (like the hue dimmer). It would be ok even another brand from the tuya ecosystem. Do you know anything like that?

    Student Project- Robotic Window Cleaner

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:19 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I am a student working a school project where my team and I have to develop a business plan for a hypothetical new product.

Our product is a robotic window-cleaning tool. We are interested in hearing from potential customers, especially those interested in automated products. If you clean more than 3 times per month and could take 5 minutes to complete this anonymous survey, we would greatly appreciate your help! Also, we need 140-150 respondents, so if you could pass along the link, that would be very helpful to us. Thank you!

    3-way switches for automation

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:17 AM PDT

    TL;DR:

Do any of you use 3-way or "HOA" (Hand-Off-Auto) switches for home automation (especially lights/outlets)? Any advice/thoughts/experience on this type of setup?

    Full story:

So I started poking around at the wiring in my new house due to what I thought were a few mis-wired outlets and well, it ends up the wiring is a hot mess and I'ma just redo it all. >_<

Given that I'm redoing the wiring in the house anyway, I was thinking about replacing the switches as well. My thought is to go HOA (Hand-Off-Auto) or 3-way switches for lights (and maybe some outlets)...because IMO this solves the switch vs smarts problem that I've heard so many people talk about. That is to say, each 3-way switch will be set to "on, off, auto" where on & off override the smart controls (like a normal switch) and "auto" is the setting to listen to the smart controls.

I'm also fairly new to home automation, in that I've been following it for a long time but only now have the money & time & house to actually do this type of stuff.

Given that this is a pretty big project, it's one I'd rather do correctly than try to do something only to find it's a mess or there's a problem! Any advice/insights would be appreciated.

    Alexa routine playing iTunes playlist

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:07 AM PDT

I have been trying to figure out how to incorporate an action within an Alexa routine that will play songs from my iTunes playlist (On my phone). Thus far I have not been able to find a way to this as the "providers" options for music action is quite limited in Alexa (mainly Amazon music, surprise!). Has anyone figured out how to do this or a workaround?

I'm a long time Actiontiles user, who recently started developing an app called DockScreen Google Play

DockScreen has different clocks/themes that look really good, button for bringing up the Assistant, and lots of more options. (swipe clock left/right to change theme, up/down to rezise clocks/webview, click clock for option to launch apps)

Its an app for keeping your screen on and viewing your notifications and news, it also has a webview that can display the Actiontiles web app, or any other home automation, cams that is web based..

It can also autoupdate websites so it solved that problem for me with Actiontiles.

I'm wondering if any reddit home automation users will test it and give some feedback for further development.. If there are any good suggestions for home automation, I'll implement them right away :)
