    Beginner project

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:01 PM PDT

So I'm absolute new to this topic, but I have an idea I would like to realise. I've got two separate fairy light curtains I would like to control with a selfmade iOS app (I'm a computer science student so I guess that part won't be a problem). I have no idea what kind of hardware would be the best fit for that, but I would like to keep this project as inexpensive as possible. I looked a bit into the new Raspberry Pi Pico but that seems to be sold out anywhere at the moment. Does anyone have a good recommendation for me?

[US] I’m installing Lutron Caseta Dimmers. How to “cap” off a 4-way switch in the middle of a 3-way circuit in order to effectively eliminate it from the circuit? Do I just nut red to red , and black to black on the 4-way switch?

Term for dumb devices that work great with smart plugs, also seeking recommendations.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:01 PM PDT

TL:DR - Is there a term for smart-plug friendly "dumb"/analog devices I should be using as a search term for products/reviews? Also, what do you find works well on one?

    Longer Version:

My spouse and I got a "Super-Feeder" cat feeder years ago so the cats wouldn't wake us to demand food at 5am. Their website looked like a joke (and still does) but their feeders are rock solid and work on a simple concept: you mechanically set how big the feeding (kibble) gap is and how long it runs for on a feeding. Then, any time it receives power it runs for 1 feeding cycle and stops. They were intended for use with basic socket timers, and came with one, but after a recent timer failure resulting in the cats not being fed for a 3 day trip I bought a two pack of wifi power plugs. Now the auto feeder is easy to program and check on from our phones. We can even run bonus feeding if we feel so inclined.

I know smart plugs were basically designed for these kinds of setups, especially for things like lamps and fans that can be tied into control hubs to benefit from programing and sensors, but it's really nice not to have to worry about compatibility. This feeder will work with anything that can flip it's power off and on. It will never become obsolete if a new IoT standard comes out, or if I move to a different home automation system, etc.

I've also seen a real increase in the number of devices that used to have mechanical switches and now have little electronic interfaces that ruin their potential for simple automation with smart-plugs. For example my spouse bought a little osculating fan for her seed starts (apparently to simulate wind to help them grow stronger for eventual planting outside) and was surprised/disappointed to find it had an electronic control with tiny remote. She had hoped to put it on the same timer as the grow lights, but instead she has to manually turn it on each morning because it can't be defaulted to a particular setting on power up. Likewise we have a window fan we put up near our bed in summer but it too has an electronic interface for cycling through various modes and timers, and as a result we can't just program it with a smart plug to come on when it's cold enough outside to do any good and turn off when the outside temperature is hotter than inside.

So, do smart-plug compatible devices have a term that the industry/enthusiasts likes to use to describe them, which will make them easier to find?

Also, I mentioned I bought a two-pack of smart plugs, but I've only got one device benefiting from it. Anyone have good recommendations for devices that work well on a smart plug (besides lamps, Christmas lights, and fans)?

    Dumb door check if locked

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 12:50 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I have several doors at home that do not need a smart lock but I would like to check if they are locked.

I have checked online but cant find a good solution. The best I found was a DIY solution link. Although effective, not the prettiest solution.

Is there something like this but wireless of something?

I would guess that, as a cheap alternative for a smart lock, there would be a huge market

    Z-Wave Hub WITHOUT Wifi?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 05:36 PM PDT

I'm looking for a Z-wave hub for my new Yale locks that does NOT have wifi like the 3rd gen Samsung SmartThings Hub.

I have AT&T fiber and MUST use their combo router/modem so don't want a second wifi router in the house.

Therefore, I'm looking for a simple, reliable Z-wave (+ Z-wave plus) hub that i can plug in via ethernet cable to the existing router.

I use Alexa for everything, if that's relevant.

Help replacing florescent lights for LED strip

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:31 PM PDT

Hi all, I was hoping someone could help me with a project I am starting next week. I am currently looking to hire an electrician in my area, but it's been difficult to get someone on the phone (besides answering services).

In my living room I have this cut-out/recessed rectangular area.

    https://imgur.com/SK4l7Es

Currently, I have fluorescent lights installed. I would like to remove and replace the fluorescent lights - they are too bright and draw too much power for a Brilliant smart switch I have installed. The switch prevents powering on the lights and displays a high-wattage warning. I would like to install a LED strip instead.

Here's some photos of the current setup.

    Goal:

    • Remove super bright florescent lights
    • Install new LED strip that is compatible with Brilliant switch, or connects to Google Assistant on its own. On/off voice capability is minimum. I would love to control color schemes with voice as well.
    • LEDs capable of both white and RBG colors.

    Questions:

    1. What strip would you recommend in this set-up?
    2. Do I need anything beyond the strip? Power source, some sort of track, wire clips?
    3. I am wondering if there is a maximum number of strips I can chain together?
    4. I haven't seen how the florescent lights are wired, is it likely I cannot power them using the same source as the florescent lights
    5. Anything specific I should ask a local electrician?

    Other details:

    • Currently have ten 48" florescent bulbs. Three on long side, two on the short.
    • Smart switch is a 3-gang Brilliant switch (connected to Google Assistant).
    • Switch #1 and #2 controls recessed lights
    • Switch 3 controls all florescent lights (and probably new LED strip)
    • Wires for florescent lights lead into the attic.
    • Hue strip seems expensive (and limited), but I do have a Hue bridge and other Hue bulbs in the same room.

Failed to connect to Daikin's Smart Control Feature

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:39 PM PDT

Hello, I just installed a Daikin inverter smart control, but I am unable to connect to the WiFi smart control through my phone. I scanned the QR Code from the warranty card, and it detected my WiFi SSID - 2.4 NOT 5 ghz, after hitting connect, it would say it's connecting > trying to resend configuration > connection timed out.

Anyone have any idea why ? I tried everything available that I could, even called Daikin and they told me they would get a technician to call me and make an appointment, that was 4 days ago so let's assume they don't really care about customer service. Anyone here perhaps have a solution ?

Is there a way to get a notification when an Alexa bluetooth smart light is on for a duration of time longer than 5 minutes?

Is it possible to get current energy draw on an Aeotec Smart Switch 7?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:16 PM PDT

I'm trying to setup a simple automation in Home Assistant when my laundry room dryer is on, the room exhaust fan automatically turns on. I purchased an Aeotec Smart Switch 7 (Z-Wave) assuming the current energy draw would be exposed as a sensor that I could use for the automation. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that is the case. It looks like the only sensors that are exposed is historical information (i.e. energy consumed) but not current energy being used.

I've looked through the engineering document on this switch but the only thing I see remotely close to what I want is "(Param 6) Send Alert When In Use" which is for "Send alert when in use. A Scene Activation Set command will be sent when energy draw is above this setting value.".

I'm not too familiar with Z-wave scene activation so I'm not sure if this is something I could even use within Home Assistant. Anyone else with this switch figure out a way to expose current energy draw? I do know the Smart Switch 6 has this which I'm thinking might be my only option (returning the Smart Switch 7 and buying the Smart Switch 6).

Looking for alternative LED strips to connect to Sylvania Smart+ Wi-Fi LED Indoor Flex Strip (75704). Can't find any Sylvania ones.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 04:48 PM PDT

I have a Sylvania Smart+ Wi-Fi LED Indoor Flex Strip (#75704) that I want to extend; would like it to move from lighting behind a tv to doing a stair rail so I need a decent amount.

I'm running into an issue finding any extending segments. I'm not sure if they've stopped making them since they are moving to the Zigabee Hub model or if it is due to the current supply issues for electronics due to COVID.

Does anyone know of another type of LED strip that would not only attach but also have the ability to change color? (Or if you do know where to get actual Sylvania strips that would be great too obviously)

Any way to have smart switches control different smart bulbs from the ones they're wired to?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:36 PM PDT

To simplify the scenario, in a room, I have Switch 1 and Switch 2. Switch 1 currently turns on bulbs A and B and Switch 2 turns on bulbs C and D. I'd love to reconfigure it so that Switch 1 controls bulbs A and C and Switch 2 controls bulbs B and D. Switches 1 and 2 are physically far apart, so I can't just switch the wiring in the wall easily. I would want to potentially only have bulb C for example on, so I'd like to do smart bulbs, but I'd also want to be able to control the 4 bulbs with the switches for easy turning on/off.

Wondering the best way to accomplish this?

Is Insteon as a company dying?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:27 PM PDT

I have noticed over the last several months that getting Insteon products has been harder and harder.. amazon stock is limited at best.. and almost nothing 2-day, Smarthome.com almost completely out of everything.. last tweet was November 2020..

I super love insteon. it is sooo dang reliable. very fast and they have offerings no body else has.. Keypadlinc, Fanlinc, the smallest embedded switches..

i have my complaints also... no ability to update fw, electrolytic caps might go bad after a while, proprietary signaling, lack of real security..

I use Indigodomo for home automation and I love that too.. so the proprietary bits have not been too unbearable.

just trying to see if anyone has heard anything..

    r/Vera_Ezlo

Hopefully we can find some solutions to this new platform, if you would like come on over.

fyi - I did ask the moderator for permission to post this.

How do you deal with this? (TW: wire clutter)

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:58 AM PDT

Looking to automate my built in AC. But it has dials, and plugs into a 220v socket, so I am at a loss at how to do it. Our main room, where the AC is, is completely exposed to the sun for a good chunk of the day, and we are evening shift workers, so by the time we wake up the room is 80+ degrees.

C by GE Smart Switch Making Noise

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 01:31 PM PDT

Hello all, I installed a C by GE Smart Switch and besides the app being buggy it worked as expected but the switch itself is making noise. Sounds like dial up internet but you can't hear it unless you're right up on it. Is this an issue with the switch and I need to return it?

The switch that it's going to is connected to three outdoor lights on my house that are small LED panels.

Inside the house my outdoor light switch is next to an entry switch and there is a single black wire that is on a screw for the entry way switch and looks to be daisy chained over to my outdoor light switch. I wondered if that's the issue. So the smart switch has two black wires and a ground, with one of those black wires daisy chained from the other switch. I took it out for safety reasons. Edit i may have neutral wires that have a wire nut on them, tucked inside the box.

    Any feedback would be great.

Smart Light switch programmable to fade slowly at a specific time (mimicking the sunset)

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:37 AM PDT

I'm installing a couple LED strips in a room and I want them to start a 30ish minute fade around 8:30pm. I have a few wyze bulbe that do this and I love it but I need this to be a programable dimmable switch.

I will be installing these LED's

Pro Series: PWM Dim-To-Warm White High CRI (90+) LED Strip Light, 24V, 5 meters - Lumicrest LED Lighting

    This transformer

LED Flexible Strip Power Supply (lumicrest.com)

I cannot figure out which switches/smart home systems will give me the ability to do this. Know of any that would work?

    Large-scale Light Switch Automation

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 11:43 AM PDT

I am deep into planning mode on my automation. My one-story house is 3400SqFt+ , and there are switches all over the place. I have over 60 switches acrosss the house. Do I want to convert them all? Let's say yes for design purposes. Also assume I will build-out a HomeAssistant automation platform. I have another 30 devices (Wifi/IP) across the house, at least for inventory purposes. Speakers, thermostats, locks, doorbells, etc.

In terms of a lighting plan, Is this were I concede to a Caseta installation, because Lutron designs for this sort of scale and automation? Can Z-wave handle the load? Interference levels are moderate to low in this installation.

    My concerns:

    - Lutron - more expensive, less automation control; maximum load of manageable switches; limited aesthetics/choices for switches

    - Z-wave - limited range (It may not make it across the house), less "responsive" than Lutron

Low frequency microphone for recording thunder and other low-frequency sounds

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:49 AM PDT

Can anyone recommend a commercial low-frequency microphone, with or without accoustic enhancements, that can pick up thunder and other low frequency sounds. My assumption is that most low-frequency microphones are designed for near-field pick up of sounds from drums, etc.. Is there something suitable for far-field low frequency sounds?
