Voice command to unlock a door. Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:20 PM PDT Hi there reddit! Here is my goal. I want to unlock a door with a password. The logical steps I see are: - Touch a physical button (or a button on a phone app) - say a password (not numerical passcode) - deadbolt unlocks - (bonus) incorporate turning off light A and turning on light B. This is for an interior door, so I am not concerned with someone yelling a password through a window and breaking in. The various retail smart locks I've seen for sale only seem to lock under voice command, but not unlock. Obviously I would want the automation to only trigger if I say the correct password, thus some voice recognition software would complicate things. Perhaps the fix is: - build an iOS app that allows me to enter in the password (voice to text input) - if correct password: app (through an API) unlocks retail brand smart lock - if correct password: app turns off light A and turns on light B [link] [comments]
Automating water production with excess solar Energy production Posted: 22 Mar 2021 02:08 AM PDT So... Im new on this. Basicly now I got a photovoltaic setup at home with 2200W max. During part of the day I have a big excess of solar power which I would like to use to make some deshumidizers pull water from air. I know I could just programe them to work from 9am to 15pm, but this would mean that during dark days I Will be paying for all the extra energy expenditure. I tryied looking for some smart plugs that analize house power consumption, but I dont see anything helpful. Maybe because Im new I dont know exactly what to look for... Any help os welcome! PD: Im from Spain and I'm conected to the grid, but there is no way the power company pay me for the power Im producing, they just discount the extra from the Bill to a max of 0€ bill... Suggestions for new furnace that cooperates well with smart thermostat. Posted: 22 Mar 2021 02:26 PM PDT I've done some searching but didn't see much on this topic. Most of the conversation is around the best thermostat as opposed to the furnace. We've got a pair of old furnaces that we are looking to repair and I'm hoping to make sure that we get high quality replacements that also play well with smart thermostats. But from everything I've seen, the nicer you go, the more complicated the control equipment is and the more likely it will be proprietary. Does anyone have suggestions for good quality furnaces that pair well with smart thermostats (Ecobee in particular)? Based on my reading, Trane appears to be a good option, but any suggestions are much appreciated. [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Mar 2021 09:47 PM PDT The switch is a toggle, so I was thinking Switchmate: https://ideaing.com/product/switchmate-voice-activated-smart-lighting-toggle-switch However, this is bluetooth, and I was hoping for something I could add, say, a Zigbee button to, so that I could essentially make a new switch that is easier to access. Posted: 22 Mar 2021 06:57 AM PDT I saw another post asking if they could use nfc tags to help turn on/off lights, and there were multiple helpful comments to that post that have solved their question and mine. But I was wondering; is there a way to make a tag that can open a web browser of some kind, or automatically send a command to turn on/off lights with a phone that may not have tasker installed? How hard would it be to create a simple apk (similar to Tasker) that would act as the "keys" for your home, and would very specifically only trigger the events tasker would have on a phone where tasker is not installed. I don't explain things well, so please don't hesitate to ask me to clarify something. Thanks for your time! [link] [comments]
Recommendation for smart switches Posted: 22 Mar 2021 05:37 PM PDT I'm kinda at a cross roads and looking for guidance. I want to replace my light switches with smart switches. Some of my end goals are to;
I've tried purchasing and playing around with two existing switches the Sonoff TX T0US3C and MoesGo WS-US-RF. I was going to flash the Sonoff with Tasmota before I found out how half of my house was wired. The MoesGo supports no neutral wire but uses a WB25 chip. (https://community.home-assistant.io/t/unkown-tuya-chip/153591/61) I've boiled this down to two options, either go down the rabbit hole to attempt to replace the WB25 with an ESP8266 or build my own switch from scratch based on the ESP. Does anyone have any recommendations or possibly something I haven't considered? [link] [comments]
Questions regarding anything from alarm to microwave. Sorry, I'm a newb. Posted: 22 Mar 2021 01:39 PM PDT Hi there, I am a complete newbie to the field of home automation and IoT devices in general. I am moving into a new place and thought it would be a good time to familiarize myself with the field. The problem isn't finding information, it's figuring out what is and isn't possible from the ocean of information out there. I have someone I can ask about lights, so the remaining areas I have questions around is my alarm system, security gate, and the microwave. Ok, that last one is odd, but stick with me. Microwave oven My logic tells me that taking a stock standard microwave, opening it up, and fiddling around with the electronics to IoT'ify it, is a really bad idea. So in this case, I'll probably have to buy a "smart" one. All I basically want is a microwave that I can set the time, start, and stop from a phone app. I have trouble operating the interface on most of the newer microwaves because of reasons. So doing it from my phone would be great. Can anyone recommend one? I'm looking for a standard countertop model, nothing fancy. Alarm The place I'm moving into has an IDS control panel. I think it's an S Series, but I don't mind upgrading if need be. Again, what I'd like to do here is to be able to turn my alarm on and off via the Home app on my iPhone. I prefer doing it that way, but if I have to write some kind of small app that uses HomeKit and can link the alarm to the Home app myself, I'll do that. The question here is, is it possible to achieve this setup with an IDS control panel? I've looked around and saw some wireless modules you can install on the control panel, I presume, but I don't know if that's what I'm looking for. Electric gate Same story here, I want to open and close it from my phone. I am again willing to write my own little app for this, but would prefer not to. The big question is whether or not it is possible to take the existing gate motor and make it "smart". Sorry, not sure how to phrase that using the correct terminology. Feel free to respond with technical answers, even just pointing me towards a useful article or post would be appreciated. As I said, I'm just lost in the ocean of information out there. I am a technical person, I work in the cloud infrastructure and DevOps space, so I don't mind building/configuring some of this stuff myself. Thanks in advance, and apologies if any of this is really basic! [link] [comments]
US: Shelly 2.5 - best wall switch? Posted: 22 Mar 2021 09:01 PM PDT Hi, I'm trying to automate roller shades. Shelly 2.5 looks perfect. What's the best wall switch for a Shelly? The shades currently use a rocker that has 3 settings, but the rocker stays in those settings - ie they're always in "up," not in one state just for a moment. I think Shelly wants a momentary complete circuit. [link] [comments]
HUE bulbs randomly unreachable Posted: 22 Mar 2021 05:04 PM PDT Looking for some guidance. After more than a year of trouble free use, bulbs in one of the rooms randomly go unreachable. There has not been any change to wireless or RF devices in the house, nor has the placement of bulbs vs bridge changed. The only commonality I can see is that the non-responsive bulbs are all RGB (4 bulbs and a light strip) New bulbs in the same location are also un-reachable, but old bulbs in different locations are usable again after about 20 hours. I have tried both 802.11x and Zygbee channel changes, with no improvement. I'm at a loss... [link] [comments]

Getting new security system, abode for automation built in, or better to do automation separately? Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:10 PM PDT I used to have a monitored system but want to do something self monitored. I bought a simpli safe system but saw that abode offers a similar setup with much more availability for home automation. The same system/equivalent censors would run about $500 more up front, but I would save $4 a month vs simpli safe (they have a new $10 plan for text alerts and app access) vs $6 for abode to get automation cue services. Is the extra $500 up front worth it, or is there something better that could be used with simpli safe and would provide better automation options than abode gives? I have google speakers throughout my house, wyze cams, will be getting lutron light switches soon, and a smart lock. I'll likely eventually get smart plugs and other devices of that nature. Thanks for your help! [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Mar 2021 06:47 AM PDT Hey folks. So I've just purchased a new house and since I sold my home automation system with the old house I have to opportunity to build a new system from the ground up and do it right. My last set up was done several years ago, and I'm sure there are better methods now, so I'm hoping to get some advice. My old system consisted of the following:
Everything was tied together nicely, but required a lot of "fiddling" on a regular basis to keep it all running. Since this is a brand new house I'm not tied to any specific system, with the exception of the builder-installed MyQ garage door openers (x2). I'd love to have HomeKit compatibility, either natively or via a very reliable translation layer to increase ease of use for my wife. The components I need are similar to the old setup, though I won't have a multi-zone heating system this time:
I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Any UK people here with decent alternatives for Z-wave light switches? Posted: 22 Mar 2021 02:38 AM PDT I'm only aware of Neo Coolcam and MCOHome for z-wave light switches that work on 220v, does anyone have any other recommendations? Any good no-neutral recommendations as well? [link] [comments]

Posted: 22 Mar 2021 11:36 AM PDT Hours of watching Vacuum Wars YouTube and reading Reddit posts has left me deciding between i3+ or an i7 on its own. I was strongly considering Neato D7 and Roborock s5 and still could be talked into them - more on why I'm wary of them towards the bottom of the post. Here are factors at play: I am leaning towards an i7 and saving up for the clean base, but it seems insane to me that I'm paying $200 just to get the room mapping features. Neato D7 and Roborock s5 max If the customer support and longevity were the same across the board, I'd probably get one of these over a Roomba since they both seem to perform excellent when they're working. It seems like the side brushes on both of them are less likely to fling debris outside of the path of the vacuum than the Roomba is. I like the shape of the D7 and I like the mop feature of the s5 and that it should eventually have self-emptying features. However, none of these things trump longevity when I'm paying this much for a vacuum. If anyone thinks I should reconsider the Neato or Roborock models, I'd be interested to hear your opinion! Posted: 22 Mar 2021 01:30 PM PDT Is there a way (not using Grafana yet) to see what my solar panels are producing in a day in Grafana? Also, I am new to home automation and Grafana. Edit: Added the last sentence. [link] [comments]
Smart circuit breakers (kind of) Posted: 22 Mar 2021 01:04 PM PDT Hi everybody, I need help with my situation: I am not expert in automating my house (I am a newbie), yet I succeeded in installing a tado controller for my air-conditioner. Now I'd like to automate the circuit breakers which control my house's outdoor lights, could anybody help me? I already have a HomeKit Hub set-up, and the location for my circuit breakers would be near the WiFi router, so a HomeKit-enabled WiFi-linked solution would be great, but I am open to other solutions as well. Thank you to everybody who will answer. P.s. Everything can (and will) be installed by an Electrician, so there is no safety hazard. [link] [comments]

Moving into an Apartment with Google Devices Posted: 22 Mar 2021 03:24 PM PDT So I have been pouring over reviews of various Wi-Fi solutions and smart devices, this is my first house. I would like to have mostly google devices and be able to control them via voice and sensing when I get home etc. I will be getting a nest, robotic vacuum, smart TV, AV receiver, lock, and some lights. My question is I really like the Eero mesh options but will this work with google devices or do I need a Hub as well? The apartment is only 1200 sqft so I could probably get by with just a single router. Alternative Wi-Fi suggestions are welcome too. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Possible to configure Legrand and On-Q system on my own?? Posted: 22 Mar 2021 07:52 AM PDT Long story short, my cousin is a builder. Built himself a very nice home and installed the Legrand system because he says "my electrician told me it's the best". He's now been living there 2 years and the system hasn't been configured at all. He asked me if I could figure it out so they could use the whole house audio and I said from what I understand these aren't very user friendly and usually require professional programming. Is that true, is it too big a mountain for me to climb or is it doable? Thanks for any input. [link] [comments] |
