    Lack of Neutral Wires... Suggestions?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:45 PM PDT

We have a 1950's house with "modernized" wire (ie not nob and tube or fabric shielded, but 14/2 wiring) but not modern wiring (ie no proper neutral). I'm trying to upgrade a bunch of the lighting in the house but it seems most of the fixtures are looking at require ELV or Triac dimmers. Before I go and fully install all the fixtures, I want to ensure I have switches that will work as I've been burned on this in the past. Has anyone found a good solution on this? I'd like to be able to control them remotely and dim things. Casetta doesn't seem to be easily compatible from the stuff I've tried and Radio RA 2 seems to have similar issues from everything I can read in "Application 559" which talks about ELV and requires neutrals. I'm not married to Lutron if there are other solutions.

    Thoughts or suggestions?

Help with wiring of Caseta (4 wires, but not a 3 way switch)

    Basic understanding question

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 07:34 AM PDT

I have bought a bulb that supports zigbee, also I have a Intel NUC runnning 24/7 (with ubuntu server).

Do I only need a ConBee II usb stick to control zigbee devices, or do I need anything else?

Also in which scenario would I need to use zigbee2mqtt?

Kasa TP-link HS210 3 way switch on a single pole

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 10:04 PM PDT

I'm trying to use an extra HS210 TP-link 3 way switch on a single pole and need advice on the wiring. The box has a capped neutral wire, but the current switch is only connected with these two wires. Would one wire just connect to the common screw and the other to one of the traveler screws? I don't have a volt meter to test the wires.

Auto Shut Off for Electric Stove?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 07:47 PM PDT

Looking for an auto shut off solution for an electric stove. Have an elderly family member who is now on their own and has memory issues. Need something to automatically shut off the stove if it's been left on for X number of minutes (ideally customizable).

I have found the following devices but each is nearly as much as a new stove ($550 - $650+). Wondering if there are some options I'm missing.

Want to emulate central AC with Shelly. Need help

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:05 PM PDT

Note: I'm using Google home products

I'm going to be using a portable AC unit on one end of my apartment and a window AC unit on the other end.

I just moved in here and they haven't been installed yet (they're the land lord's). I'm assuming they have mechanical switches that I can leave in the 'on' position. I'm also assuming these are safe to plug into Shelly smart plugs (or similar). Please let me know if they won be. I haven't checked the max wattage details yet.

I then want to have the Shelly humidity and temperature sensor in my dining room that is located between and connected to the rooms with the AC units.

If you don't see where this is going yet: I want to have the two plugs flip the AC on and off based on what temperature the dining room is. At some point I could expand this with an additional sensor and zone things.

Here's my problem: I can't find any information on whether or not I need anything more than the sensor, the plugs, and my Google home (which seems optional anyway). Does the app have a routine/ rule based thing for the sensor where I can have actions trigger based on the readings? Do I need an additional device to check the readings and execute the commands? Shelly makes it seem like I won't.

Also: if anyone happens to know if either Shelly or broadlink bulbs are safe in enclosed light fixtures it would be appreciated

MyQ does not let me pick a device

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 03:01 PM PDT

Just got a Chamberlain garage door opener. It has the wifi and bluetooth logo's. It has good wifi signal. I got the garage door to connect using http://setup.myqdevice.com/ The problem is the app. It does not let me choose a device when starting up. It just lets me but the x button to go back. Any ideas?

    Lutron Caseta compatability

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 12:10 PM PDT

    Hello,

I was wondering how finicky Lutron Caseta dimmer switches are? I know there is a list of compatable recessed lighting. But its a pretty short list. If I was to buy an unlisted 'dimmable' led recessed lighting fixture. What are my chances of it working?

    Thanks

Kasa KL130 no longer turning off per schedule

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 06:49 AM PDT

I have 2 KL130's and until roughly the daylight savings switch the bulbs would turn off per schedule, now however they ignore the schedule and wont turn off. I can turn them off in the app but I have to first do something like change the color before they will turn off, telling the bulb to just turn off without a prior command is ignored.

I turned off the existing power off schedule and added a new one but that is ignored as well. The lights turn on per schedule and dim per schedule but do not turn off, the are turning on at the correct time as well so I do not believe this to be a DST issue.

Short of deleting the bulb and re-adding it, anyone have an idea?

Replace ADT wireless setup? ZWave automation and a bunch of wireless sensors, Honeywell panel

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 08:59 AM PDT

ADT contract is about to expire and the monitoring has been completely useless and the ADT Zwave hub keeps dropping the mesh. So I'm definitely cancelling.

I'd definitely like to keep using the Zwave automation (Honeywell Thermostat, Yale deadbolt, several Jasco outlet dimmers).

I'd also like to be able to use the wireless door, window, and motion sensors if possible (I like the door/window chime feature when they open).

And I've got some motorized blinds (180deg tilt, not raise/lower) I setup with an ESP8266 that just broadcasts its own webpage for control, but it would be nice to have a central hub/app that can control those too.

I've been reading other posts, but thought I'd throw out my specific scenario in case there's an obvious "best option" I should be focusing on.

    Thanks

    Smart plugs and space heater

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 08:46 PM PDT

So I have these smart plugs that I control through Apple Home which have a space heater connected to them. I usually like to turn it on before I get to the part of the house so it's warmer in there. I have a problem though where I believe it's the heaters safety feature that needs me to physically turn on the heater with the button on the unit. Any ideas for a way around this or should I just get a new heater. I use a standard Lasko ceramic element space heater

The table lamp problem: Looking for a "dumb" impulse cord switch

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 01:44 AM PDT

We have a bunch of table lamps with simple mechanical two-way cord switches in the house, and I'd like to keep them as "non-techie friendly" as possible.

The only smart cord switch I have found is the Swiid cord switch, but that is not an option (Too big, too ugly, too old, and someone also reported it makes an annoying sound...)

So, I am now looking for just a simple/dumb/regular cord switch with an impulse switch (not a rocker with two positions), but to my surprise I can't find any! Any pointers here?

As you may have guessed I'm thinking I could connect the switch to a hidden smart implant or similar.

Not sure if this counts, but anyone know how to automatically create subfolders for new folders in a certain folder?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 02:51 PM PDT

The title might be a bit hard to understand, but I was wondering if there is a way to automatically create subfolders when you create a new folder. For example, if I have a folder for Projects, and I create a new folder in it called project1, I want that folder to automatically contain certain files and subfolders because I always need them in each of my projects. In my example, each new folder I create inside Projects would contain a subfolder called scripts and a subfolder called output. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Anyway to sense if the gas to my oven is flowing?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 02:27 AM PDT

I've seen people all about flowrate but I don't care about flow rate. I just want a sensor that can tell me if my oven gas is on or not. Maybe the pipes change temperature or some other indication of gas flow.

Looking for micro controller controlled incandescent light dimmer module

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 12:34 PM PDT

    Title says it all,

I want to dim a 60W light (AC, 120) using a micro-controller. Looking online i can find cheap SRC/TRIAC bare modules from China, but I want something thats

    A) Has a proper case.

    B) Has proper UL (etc) certifications.

    C) won't burn my house down.

I'm willing to spend ~100 Dollars,

Ideally the control input is logic level (0-3.3V), and even better if it is optically isolated from the live AC.

I spent 30 minutes looking, but I can't find anything that won't burn my house down :(

    Thanks!

    Zigbee Stick Doubt

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 11:50 AM PDT

Hi guys, after attempting my first home automation with a CC2531 from aliexpress, properly flashed and all that, I decided to change the stick. This stick just didn't work for me, too unstable.

I bought a Congbee II and I want to use it with ZHA integration but I keep reading that the zzh! is way better. Is congbee 2 good for a basic home automation or should i go for the zzh?

    Thank you very much

Speak Text Action in Homepod mini?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 10:45 AM PDT

I created a Shortcut and included the Speak Text Action. This action reads a Hungarian text.

    1. If I boot this shortcut from the shortcuts app on the ipad, reads the text nicely, in Hungarian, on my Homepod.
    2. When it is timed to run for example at 8 in the morning, it runs, but not on the Homepod but ir run on the Ipad where it is timed.
    3. The third case, when I ask Sir on Homepod to play this shortcut, he plays it on the homepod, but tries to say the Hungarian text in English.

So I think Siri can't handle Hungarian (I know that can't speak Hungarian, unfortunately), but Siri can handle it on the Ipad.

Is there a solution to it? Basically, I want like the ipad, to read the text on the Homepod in Hungarian when it's timed.

    Thanks in advance.

NICE gate opener integration with MEROSS Garage Opener?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 03:05 AM PDT

First, the gate and the device can be connected. I checked it in the website.

How to connect the device to the power supply?

I found the user manual for the gate: (https://www.niceforyou.com/sites/default/files/upload/manuals/idv0378a03en.pdf) , but unfortunately I was not able to find out exactly how to supply power to an external device. However, I largely understand how to connect the control. But I'm not 100% sure about that either.

    Thanks if anyone can help

Eli5 on networking, converting, hacking Zigbee

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 08:14 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

On this week I got my first zigbee device, Moes Radiator valve HY369RT or Tuya TS0601 https://zigbee.blakadder.com/Shojzj_378RT.html

And was disappointed I couldn't connect it to my wifi as I did with my yeelight bulbs before. So I started my research, found several solutions, and all of them starting from buying a sniffer (coordinator) first.

I have tried to search and didn't find any results on the following questions:

Why it's not possible to sniff Zigbee traffic on your OpenWrt router or WiFi dongle?

Zigbee is a mesh network, usually working on 2.4 GHz band. There are tutorials on how-to to make coexistence of WiFi with Zigbee because its overlaps 1st channel. Doesn't it mean that it makes noise there, and you don't even need to change drivers to sniff the traffic and decrypt those messages?

Why it's not possible to convert your Zigbee device on some more friendly protocol?

    Best smart home systems

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:11 AM PDT

Hi! Eventually moving and we have an Alexa and a Google. Should those be upgraded? Also, what are your recommended camera systems? We basically want the whole house secure, monitored and protected at all times. We know this can be pricy and that's okay - as we have plenty of time to save up for what we will need. Thank you in advance 🙂
