    MyQ app sucks

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 02:52 PM PST

The MyQ garage opener app has become a complete pain in the ass. It takes forever to log me in. Once it finally logs in, I have to wait endlessly for the app to communicate with the opener. Most of the time it just spins forever and I have to force quit the app, restart it, and it then it works instantly. Anyone else have this issue or have any ideas? I'm honestly thinking about just getting rid of MyQ altogether.

Can’t find BR20 LEDs for Lutron Caseta wireless dimmer switches

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 07:17 PM PST

I have had the hardest time buying BR20 LEDs that work well with my Lutron Caseta Wireless Dimmer switches. I have tried both of the following models, and both worked well for a few months but eventually both exhibited the same symptoms: lights will either turn on → off → back on, or sometimes, lights won't turn on at all despite the switch showing that they are on:

The Lutron compatibility tool lists these as being compatible, though I'm hesitant to try them since they look very similar to the Ecosmarts that I currently have and am not having a great experience with:

Is anyone able to offer any guidance? I'm at my wits end here. Thanks in advance.

Automation Ideas with Plex and Home Assistant

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 01:24 PM PST

Looking for advice on automating smart lights.

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 04:48 PM PST

Hi, I'm looking into getting some Chinese smart bulbs and controlling them through google assistant and ittt. I was thinking one of the biggest things would be having non voice based control and I'm currently thinking of using either PIR sensors, buttons, or both hooked up to arduinos. I'm living in an apartment so there isn't too much space to cover and the light switches don't have neutral wires ran and I don't know if I'm going to be here long enough for it to be worth it. My primary concern is making the system as compact as possible and preferably keeping costs down. I have a boat load of CHIP computers lying around if those could help bring down costs. If somebody has already done this I'd be interested in 3D printed enclosures, but I could always design those myself if they don't exist. I think it would be really cool if they could be mounted on the light switches like a Lutron Aurora smart switch.

Need help finding a device like switchbot

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 02:22 PM PST

Hi, I need an outside of network wifi bot that can push a round button (not a light switch) just like this https://www.switch-bot.com/products/switchbot-bot

I WOULD buy from switchbot but it's been over 2 weeks with o replies to questions I have which makes me think if I buy from them and have any issues, then welp, I'm on my own. Plus they are charging $20 to ship a 5"box that's worth $29

Does anyone know where I can buy something just like that?

I'm pretty green so a DIY suggestion will be way over my head.

    Thanks in advance.

Does a smart-enabled RGB LED tube ‘bulb’ to replace a fluorescent tube light exist?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 06:53 PM PST

Long story short, I live in a rented flat and the kitchen has this awful fluorescent lighting on one side of the kitchen as well as the actual decent lighting on the other side of the room. It's a G13 T8 fitting.

My roommate and I are looking to switch the whole of our flat to smart lighting as we both now have it in our rooms and the livingroom so far. So the product would need to either be Google Home or Homekit enabled, or even a basic bluetooth-with-app service but it would need to be able to be controlled via our phones.

We would ideally like full RGB support however just warm/cool would suffice.

I seem to have found LED tube lighting but none of it is smart enabled and is more designed to be used outside.

I'm unsure if there are any limitations electronically that would make this tough. Any education on the manner or help in finding one if it does exist would be much appreciated!

What exactly is webCoRe useful for?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 10:15 PM PST

I have all sorts of stuff in my home automated, but I've never touched webCoRe and I don't really understand what it does or how it helps. I'm yet to find something that I wanted to automate only to find that the only way to do so was apparently via webCoRe - I've always found a solution using Alexa, SmartThings, and Tasker.

    WebCore SmartThings Question

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 04:05 PM PST

I have written a piston that is supposed to turn on a lamp in the foyer when the front door is unlocked. Is there a way for this only to be triggered if a code is entered and not when I unlock it from the inside?

Combining smart relays with smart bulbs - possible?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 02:48 AM PST

Hey. I guess this must've been talked about before, but I have no idea. What do you think about combining smart relays like the Shelly 1 with smart bulbs? What I mean is, using Home Assistant, an automation will turn on a hallway light through a Shelly 1. But that particular Shelly 1 will actually be controlling more than one bulb in the hallway, and with that automation I'll only want one bulb on, while the others should stay off. Have any of you managed to achieve this?

I don't have any smart bulbs yet and I haven't installed any smart relays yet (I haven't even set any HA automation yet, I'm a newbie with very few devices for now), so I'm not sure about anything. If the automation tells the Shelly 1 to turn on that light, and immediately after tells those smart bulbs to do what they have to do (all of them to turn off except for one to stay on), do you think there would be a small delay in achieving what I want? That is, maybe ALL the bulbs would be turning on for half a second or something like that before all except one turn off?

And what if I do the opposite? What if I FIRST tell the smart bulbs to do what they have to do, even if they're currently not powered on, only one to turn on and the rest to stay off, and THEN I tell the Shelly 1 to power it on? Would this work to achieve what I want: only one bulb turns on and the others don't turn on at all? Or is it impossible to give orders to small bulbs that are not powered on?

    Opinions? Thanks.

Are there smart switches to replace low voltage touch-plate vintage light switches?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 09:31 AM PST

I originally wanted to replace the entire system but cost is prohibiting that so I'm wondering if I can just replace a few of the low voltage switches with some sort of smart switch. These are what I have in the house:

ELI5 using Caseta and Pico together

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 07:52 PM PST

I am just getting into automation and appreciate this sub a lot so thank you! I am about to start the process of replacing my switches in my house. I think I will go with caseta/lutron as you all have said nice things. I have read threads of using caseta and pico together but didn't quite follow and I am hoping you can provide clarity. I do have an older house where most lights are controlled by multiple switches. What is pico exactly? How does it relate to caseta? Any advice for a newbie getting into switches? Many many thanks r/homeautomation! You rock!

    Switchbot-like Item

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 07:43 PM PST

    Hi guys,

My girlfriend is scared of the dark so I'm planning to get her one of these switchbot-like items. The plan is to have her turn it on before she enters the door so that it's not as dark anymore. The main reason why I'm not considering switchbot is because I'm out of the US and shipping plus taxes will be costly. Any recommendations is appreciated, thanks!

Z-Wave switches buzz even when off

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 07:41 PM PST

I have a mix of the GE Enbrighten Z-Wave Plus Smart Dimmer and normal switches and for some reason they buzz even when off but only when placed in a 2 gang electrical box with another switch.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

In most places it is barely audible unless you put your ear up to them but in my bedroom it is a little noticeable.

I have attempted to swap them out with other switches from around the house but without any luck. Are my switches defective or is there likely something going on in my wiring to encourage interference when they are that close together?

    Doorbell Camera: Nest vs Ring

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 06:54 PM PST

I'm trying to get my parents a doorbell camera.

I'm stuck between nest and ring.

    A few requirements:

    1. Multiple camera option,

    2. viewable on phone,

    3. viewable on another device (please mention what device would be needed). Something that can sit in the kitchen or be next to the door on the inside if phone isn't near by

    4. Nightvision

    5. best VALUE

What's the better fit and what are some pros and cons of both of them?

Looking for a dimmer switch with does not require a neutral wire nor a hub

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 06:42 PM PST

    Hello fellow home automation people,

I'm looking for a switch that requires no hub nor a neutral wire. For some damn reason, this box doesn't have a neutral wire but the box right underneath it has a neutral wire. I'm looking for a switch that I can control with Alexa to turn on/off/dim 5 LED indoor flood lights. 10 watts and 120 volt each. Could anybody help me out with a suggestion please? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I forgot to add that I would like it to be a smart dimmer switch so that I will be able to control it with my echos

Front gate Video-com remote open recommendations?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 01:54 PM PST

We're redoing our fence and taking the opportunity to make an official main entrance to our property. I'm going to make some custom welded doors. Looking at locks got me thinking about maybe getting a Ring, but what I really thought would be cool would be to have a video cam / intercom with the option to unlock the gate remotely from the house. I see some Chinese brands on AMZ and the web, but none from brands I've heard of before. Any recommendations for something like this?

    Schlage deadbolt UK installation

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 04:02 AM PST

I'm considering getting the Schlage Encode in the UK by importing it over. I have a few concerns that I can't seem to find an answer to anywhere.

    1. I assume that there wouldn't be any compatibility issues from the Wifi perspective right? There aren't really any differences between frequencies that would cause any problems?
    2. I would need to use a US deadbolt on a UK door. I think this should be possible although it might require some modifications to the door.

Has anyone gone through this process or have any insight into why this would not work? Thanks.

    Z-wave/Zigbee Compatible Light Puck?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 09:50 AM PST

I am currently looking for some sort of battery powered LED puck that I can used sort of as a broadcasting last. Something similar to these.

    https://www.amazon.com/Brilliant-Evolution-Wireless-Changing-Controls/dp/B07L46RBGS/

Obviously, those are not really smart home because they only work on remote, but I am having a hard time finding something that I can pair with either Smartthings or something.

The goal is a battery powered, LED puck that can either be On/Off or change colors based on whats going on. I have a few focuses on this.

    1) My wife and I are both remote, so mainly so we can have lights on when we are both in Meetings

    2) To track certain statuses in the house without relying on Phillip Hue lights being on

    3) A reminder that the security system is armed before we open the door to let the dog out.

So the puck would sit on/by doors (Live in texas, so I often leave the door open even with meetings going on because it gets hot) so the light can say I am in meeting, rather than just having my headphones on listening to music
