Wyze announced a Robot Vacuum for $199 if you order before Jan 2021; has LIDAR and room mapping

Are Neato robot vacuums no longer relevant?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 07:36 AM PST

Looking to replace my neato d3 connected. Does anyone here have experience transitioning from a neato to a non-neato? I have purchased 3 neatos in the past 10 years. One for my parents and two for me. They have been great and have had an approx life of 4 years (~1000 battery cycles) before needing battery replacement which usually ends up being a full replacement since battery replacement time is when other things start to go whacky.

Looking at all the current robot vacuum reviews/comparisons it seems like Neato is not really talked about much compared to when I bought my XV-21 or first botvac D. When I compare the specs of the current Neatos to the competition it is usually very close. Neato usually has the largest bin size, largest brush sizes, LIDAR is very good with no-go lines and room mapping, and build quality is very good. Usually, the neato cons are not that obvious in comparison/reviews, but instead, they are just left out of the conversation. I could see maintenance and parts as a detractor for Neato since they are usually expensive and sometimes hard to get help on.

Basically, I have really loved my Neato robot vacuums, but want a second opinion on if I am blinded by brand loyalty right now seeing as almost nobody recommends Neato robot vacuums anymore. For reference, my home is ~1500sq.ft. with 50/50 wodd floors and a large dog. Generally I run by vacuum 3 days a week.

    Thank you for your time.

INovelli Fan + Light switch not dimming

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 09:46 PM PST

INovelli users out there! I have a ceiling fan with light. I used to run on GE switches and the fan and light would dim just fine. I switched to the Inoveli Red series Fan + Light switch and my fan and light turn on. However, the dimming function does not work. Anyone else have this issue?

    Thanks!!

Smart blind motor for two cords?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 03:49 AM PST

Does anyone know if there are any motors for slatted blinds that would work with two separate cords instead of buying 2 motors? We have a cord for moving the blinds and another to adjust the pivot. I'm UK based. Thanks!

    Decibel reader?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 07:13 PM PST

    Hello,

I am planning on starting my smart home and home automation soon. Might be a strange desire, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on setting up a decibel reader outside of my house and it would notify me if the decibels are over a certain level for specified period? I like to make sure I am not disturbing my neighbors.

    Any ideas?

External Camera recommendation request - no cloud

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 06:01 PM PST

Seeking an outdoor camera recommendation please.

    • Must survive -30C / -22F
    • No cloud - we live in an area where internet is still charged by the GB...yep.
    • I have a local linux file server - so i just want to point the camera at that (SMB/FTP/NFS whatever) so it saves the video recordings over the LAN.
    • PoE ideally, but not a deal breaker.
    • Ethernet ideal. - But Wifi ok, but only if it has a local cache - so it still stores videos when the wifi is down, and uploads them to the server once the wifi is back up.
    • Has some night vision
    • Reasonable motion detection etc - obviously only want videos recorded when there is motion.
    • Integration with Home Assistant with be a plus!

Does anyone know a camera that fits the bill?

New house! What should I get?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 01:33 PM PST

Hi! I'm new to the home automation world. We are buying a new house, and considering adding some automation to it).

I just purchased the Eero 6 Plus mesh network with built in Zigbee smart hub.

The house comes with a Nest thermostat (no idea the model yet) and a ADT alarm system.

And we are a Apple ecosystem family.

I'm thinking of getting a smart lock, maybe a doorbell, and replacing the ADT alarm system?

What are your thoughts... where would you go from here?

    Thanks!

Personal Hybrid Cloud with Amber Plus, Home Assistant and Nextcloud

Personal Hybrid Cloud with Amber Plus, Home Assistant and Nextcloud

Get ready for another review where Home Assistant and Nextcloud are involved. This time I'll also have my hands on one Hybrid, and I'm not taking about a Prius or something but about this all in one device called Amber Plus. A Wi-Fi router, a Network Attached Storage and personal hybrid cloud in one device

With the size of a small home stereo speaker this device is having dual hard drives in RAID1, a 4x4 MIMO router and Intel Processor inside capable of virtualisation and running Docker containers which opens to you almost endless possibilities.

But let's see what we have inside the box and then I will try to install Home Assistant and Nextcloud on Amber.

    Motorize roller shades

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 02:14 PM PST

I have seven windows in living room with roller shades and beaded chains. It's a pain to roll them all up every morning and roll them all down in the evening. Is there an easy way to motorize these and use Alexa to open/close? I'm not looking to spend much and definitely not looking to change the rollers. Trying to see whether there're reliable wired retrofit kits. Interested in hearing your experience with those.

Options to turn a dial on a Rain Bird irrigation system?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 02:13 PM PST

Hi. I recently moved into a house that has a Rain Bird ESP-LXME irrigation controller. Apparently, they don't make a wifi controller for this model and to update to a wifi one would cost like $1,000 (I have 24 zones, thanks previous owners!).

Anyway, I really just want to keep the controller on auto and once in a while, move it to off (or turn the dial one click to the left). I don't even need to get it back to auto and can do that manually.

Does anybody know of any options? Maybe like a wifi enabled button that can turn/ push a dial out? A pic of the controller is below.

Best "hackable" wifi speakers for a linux setup?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 12:59 AM PST

So I'm looking to add some wifi speakers to my setup. My goal would be to achieve:

    • A stereo or setup 2.1 for my home theater setup, which is running from a media PC running Ubuntu (could be a sound bar)

    • A few additional speakers around the house

    My use cases would be:

    1. Playing movie/game audio through just the home theater speakers

    2. Playing music or podcasts through all the speakers, from my media PC, or a laptop (mac), or a smartphone (iOS)

What would be the best brands/platforms to look into to achieve this? It seems like Sonos is the market leader, but I have read it's not well supported on Linux (although I am having trouble understanding if this is only a problem for the setup, or whether it's not possible to stream audio to the speakers at all).

I'm a developer, and another big plus for me would be a system which is hackable/customizable. Like if there is some FOSS wifi audio platform out there I would also not be afraid of DIY work with raspberry pi's for example.

Tuya WiFi light switch causes lights to flicker

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 09:27 AM PST

I bought a Tuya 2-gang WiFi switch from AliExpress, and today it arrived and I went to connect it, I connected blue wire to N, black wire to L, and yellow/green wire to L1 (I don't know if it's the correct way), and it showed signs of life. My light fixture has 4 light bulbs, each gang controls 2 bulbs. When I connected the switch, 2 lights light up perfect, but two are very dim and are flickering constantly, and. when I turn them on they get brighter only a tiny bit. Does anyone know what is the issue?

    Switch I'm talking about: https://m.aliexpress.com/item/4001320452950.html?spm=a2g0n.orderlist-amp.item.4001320452950&aff_trace_key=&aff_platform=msite&m_page_id=3460amp-1y7v7cZpiNYAvUKK66o6xg1605115480527&browser_id=7b19cfa82c234a80b161932c9c215662&is_c=Y

What kind of switch to use with Shelly Dimmer 2??

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 01:07 PM PST

The dimmer provides two inputs, ideally for up and down, but from browsing around Amazon, etc, I can't find anything that looks like it would work.

I'm thinking you'd need a double pole momentarily switch. But I get nothing in the results that isn't already a smart switch.

And I using the wrong terms or thinking about this the wrong way?

    What are you using?

I want to automate my blinds.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 12:34 PM PST

I recently had the idea of automating my blinds in my place just to open and close the blinds with a device with Alexa connectivity but everything i can find is far too expensive to justify not getting off my lazy butt to do it myself. Is there a practical yet cheap way to do this?

    Best triggers?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 11:51 AM PST

What are your best recommendations for automation IoT triggers? I.e. one device triggers something else? Or a chain?

I've been adding smart IoT home devices to my home now for 10+ years, and I think at this point, I'm maxed out on devices. IoT window blinds, every light indoor and outdoor are Philips Hue, IoT garage door openers, door locks, moisture and motion sensors, and a few smart kitchen appliances.

Right now, my triggers are fairly rudimentary or controlled by Google Home or a Harmony Hub; the garage door turns on a set of lights. a motion sensor in my study turns on a heater in the winter. Basic stuff. What other IoT specific triggers (no matter how complex) can you recommend to the rest of the community, irrespective of our setup?
