[Newbie Question] Which should I get for home automation: Raspberry PI or a cheap tablet? (I already have

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 12:02 AM PST

Hi, I'm super new to home automation, but find it very interesting because I'm a super lazy person.

My budget is tight, so I'm looking for cheap options.

I want to automate and voice command stuff like turn on/off devices/lights, control Netflix on my TV, send Wake-on-LAN signal to my PCs, connect to my Xiaomi cameras and use voice command to display them on my TV...

For such tasks, should I get a cheap tablet, or should I get a raspberry pi?

I don't know how difficult is programming on a PI, but I have a bit of C# programming background so I might be able to work it out.

    Thanks a lot in advances!

EDIT: Some how I screwed up the title, I wanted to say (I already have a Google Home Mini, and loving how easy it is to use voice commands)

Kasa Switch Randomly On and Off Repeatedly at Night

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 06:56 PM PST

I have a Kasa HS100 switch I use for my underwater pool flood light. The light faces the house and last night around 3AM it woke me up, flashing on and quickly back off about once a minute. I thought it was lightning but lightning isn't yellow.

What would cause this? Not a light I use on a regular basis when the pool is cold and I can't use it this time of year, hadn't touched the switch or the Kasa app all day, and no loss of internet or power over night. I'm so confused.

    Yeelight, worth buying?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 11:17 PM PST

Hey, I wanna buy some smart bulbs to use with the apple homekit. I read about philips hue etc. but they're just a bit too expensive to be honest. I am currently looking to buy the yeelight smart bulb, I read a lot of positive reviews but also some negative ones about the bulbs frequently disconnecting and people having to manually reset them etc. I would appreciate some feedback from people who might already be using these.

BTW: Can anyone confirm that if they have a white base they are 100% 2nd gen? I just wanna make sure, cause I found a store where they sell them a bit cheaper (they do have a white base) and I just wanna be sure that it's 2nd gen before buying it. Or is the rule that S2 stands for 2nd series and S1 for 1st series?

Zigbee / Homekit bridge choices for a multi-floor home

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 12:55 AM PST

    Hi all,

I will move in January into a new home and I am looking to make it more smart. The house is a typical midterrace english house (so brickwalls) long and narrow on 2 floors plus a converted loft. Distributing network might be a challenge here. The router will be place in the corner of the ground floor and I am considering some mesh wifi devices (like Eero) for distributing signal. Homekit is what I would like to keep using for managing the house.

Zigbee comes into the picture now. A lot of devices use zigbee and not wifi, say light bulbs, I see you have many more choices if you consider zigbee bulbs rather than restricting yourself to wifi only (and only few of them are natively compatible with Homekit). Now the question is which bridge and how many.

I see there're many bridges, although not all of them are compatible either with Homekit or with all zigbee devices. The second is how many as I am not sure a single one can cover all the house. I do not want to end with 3 devices per floor like one wifi mesh, one zigbee and one LightwaveRF gateway (cause I am looking at lightwave for smart sockets...it seems they're like the only one selling UK plug type smart wall sockets).

The house has a brand new boiler with Hive thermostat which I want to expand with radiator valves, or eventually moved to Tado. Hive has a hub which I believe can bridge zigbee to wifi for homekit but not sure it's the right choice to consider.

What else can I consider? sorry for the long post, I thought giving the full context would be better ;)

    thanks

Is there a high wattage z-wave or zigbee smart switch that also handles being in a 3 or 4 way switch config with dumb switches instead of addons?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 03:54 PM PST

Our garage has 6 8ft T12/HO fixtures on one switch which works out to be roughly 1320w (110w x 12 since each fixture has 2 bulbs), they've been converted to electronic, low ballast factor, high power factor ballasts so the best case scenario is ~744W according to ballast specs.

They will eventually at some unknown future time (whenever they burn out) be replaced with equivalent LED tubes.

    Neutral is available.

I would prefer to never install an addon switch for a on/off only switch again if i can avoid it.

As a workaround i've currently got a reality switch stuck on the physical switch which has no problems switching the load but whenever someone uses one of the other switches it leaves it out of sync.

    Wyze alternative

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 03:42 PM PST

I was planning to get wyze cause of how cheap everything was but their sensors are out and the new versions won't be released till early 2021 which is too late for me.

So, what cheap but reliable devices do you recommend?

I already have an amazon echo show, the one that can act as a hub. I also have one flex speaker with motion sensor.

I need to buy one ptz camera, two fixed cameras, a co/smoke alarm detector, and 2 door sensors that can have a 2 cm gap between them and still work. So what should I get? What I like about wyze was that the cameras can also act as co/smoke alarms cause they just hear my existing alarms. Also cause I could get some free cloud storage for 14 days of clips. Anything comparable?

IntelliFire Trigger for Alexa Control of Gas Fireplace?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 11:22 AM PST

I'm looking for anyone that has experience with gas fireplaces that use an IntelliFire remote setup. What I'm looking to do is to add a sensor that will let me know when the fireplace is turned on and off. I don't really care about voice control (and wonder about the potential safety of that), but do want to be able to set up a virtual sensor that I can then have Alexa play crackling sounds on a nearby Echo Dot and turn off when the fireplace is off. There is likely a place on the hardware to tap into when this toggle happens, but I have no idea right now.

Can I use BR30 bulbs instead of R80 (UK)? If not, what options do I have?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 02:02 PM PST

I have a number of R80 bulbs in my house and I can find zero options for making them smart. BR30 bulbs look almost the same size, but are US spec so E26 and 110v rather than E27 and 240v.

Can I use BR30? If not, what options are there for R80?

(I'm looking at switches too, but being hall/landing lights there's loads of switches, some of them two way, and making them dimmable too makes the option very expensive. I'd rather just bulbs).

Smart Doorbell that can display messages to the person ringing?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 06:38 PM PST

    Hey all,

I did some searching and fouind some threads that are close, but none that were quite what I'm looking for. And googling isn't showing me what I'm looking for, either

We recently moved into a very kid-active cul de sac, which is awesome. However, with about 20 kids on the street our doorbell rings 15-20 times per day setting the dogs off and interrupting meetings for our three kids in school and work. We have tried signs we posted during meetings, but you just can't remember to change the signs around during all the different meetings and zoom calls for five of us. Most of the kids just ignore them anyway. I.e., my wife made a sign that said, "Please don't ring the bell." So the kids started knocking. Cause, kids.

I'm looking for a rellativley simple doorbell that can be scheduled to display a message permanently during meeting times and wil not ring. That way, when a kid ignores the message and rings the bell, it won't actually ring. If there isn't a simple solution, recommendations on setting something like that up would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.

    Smoke Detector with remote silence

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 01:43 PM PST

Does anyone know of a smoke detector with a remote silence function? Basically I want to be able to silence it without pulling out a ladder when I burn the toast, pan fry, or am searing something.

It looks like nest protect does this, are there any others? Honestly it doesn't even have to be smart, I just want to solve this problem because I don't have adequate ventilation.

I know there is a first alert zwave detector but it doesn't look like it can be silenced that way.

I'm using home assistant for what it's worth, so zwave, zigbee, WiFi, BLE are all ok for connectivity.

    3 Port USB-to-Serial Adapter Firmware for STM32

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 04:02 AM PST

The next time you need a USB-to-Serial adapter for your project, please have a look at my open-source firmware for STM32 Blue Pill.

The firmware supports 3 independent UART ports, RTS/CTS, DSR/DTR/DCD, 7/8 bits word length, none/even/odd parity, 1/1.5/2 stop bits, works with built-in drivers on Linux/macOS/Windows, supports all standard and non-standard baud rates (I tested it up to 921600).

STM32 Blue Pill is a ridiculously cheap STM32 development board which is available in many stores around the globe (no, I don't sell those, and I am not affiliated).

Open-source, MIT license, source code and binary releases are available at https://github.com/r2axz/bluepill-serial-monster

Reliable robot vacuum that empties itself and doesn't cost 1K ?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 07:20 AM PST

    Hey there,

I'm jumping into home automation and my first step is to get a robot vacuum.

I was about to order a Neato 750D and stumbled upon the Roomba i7+. Cleans the house by itself, then empties itself? Now that is sexy. After some more research, the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO T8 AIVI seems to be even better for the same price.

But it turns out... ~1000€ for a robot cleaner is a bit too high to be accepted by my wife.

Do you have a reliable robot vacuum that empties itself to recommend that would be about half that price? I found the Proscenic M7 PRO on Amazon but don't know much about it. Doesn't even need to mop.

WiFi Temperature Sensor w/ IFTTT compatability

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 08:27 AM PST

I'm trying to easily keep the inside of my detached garage above freezing. I have a Kasa smart plug connected to a little heater, but I need some kind of temperature sensor so I can monitor the inside of the garage temp and turn it off / on automatically. I can use weather data (I actually do this for the heater in my chicken coop) but I need the current temp of the garage itself, not the outdoors.

Seems like the Sonoff TH16 would work but it sounds like the IFTTT integration is no longer free.

I don't want to buy a thing with a hub, generally looking to do this as cheap as possible, but I would be open to trying one of those bluetooth tag things, I just feel like reception to the garage would be poor.

    Any suggestions?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 05:52 AM PST

Hi, I wrote a huge post the other day including all my lights, but I think it scared most of you guys off due to the huge wall of text and no tl;dr, will keep it short here and see if I can get some help :)

    I already purchased:

Aqara curtains, Xiaomi Mijia Universal Intelligent Smart Remote Controller WIFI+IR and Xiaomi mijia gateway 3.

I want to automate the following:

    1. Air conditioners
I want to turn 5 air conditioners to smart, so I can turn them on from the distance (living in Brazil I want to be able to arrive to a cool arrive home during summer time) What equipment should I use for that?Would these Sonoff work?
    2. Light dimmers
I have a bunch of light dimmers, some have parallel switches, some don't. Would these work?
      1. Parallel switch - Ziogbee 2 Gang
      2. Regular switch - Zigbee
    3. Regular undimmable lights
      simple Sonoff switches?

Thank you for your help :D

    Outdoor battery operated LED wreaths

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 02:43 AM PST

Looking for recommendations on how to control battery powered LEDs that are wrapped around outdoor holiday wreaths hanging on windows. HomeBridge solution would be ideal but I would accept using a third party vendor app. All other outdoor holiday decorations are wired so easily managed by smart plugs, but not sure LED battery packs with built-in wifi even exist.

Of course I could just use LEDs with onboard manual timer, but were is the fun in that? :-)
