Are smart relays a safe and good option to make dumb lights smart?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 06:18 PM PST

I'm based in Europe and there are almost no smart switches available here. I've found a few, but I'm not sure how reliable / trustworthy they are.

On the other hand, I have stumbled upon Shelly and their smart relays. They seem like a really affordable option. However, I'm unsure of how safe they are nor how safe is it to install relays with lights. Does anyone know?

The final, but the most expensive solution is to use smart bulbs such as Hue.

    Sensor to detect power

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 01:16 AM PST

Hi guys. I want to do cooled TV cabinet with fans. I do not want the fans to run all the time or have them manually turn off or on. What I would like is to run it only if TV is on so is there some sensor which detects that tv is consuming power or any other easy way to do so?

Smart plug to control battery percentage... beneficial or not?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 02:43 AM PST

So I have a robot vacuum and noticed it being on charge with the battery at 100% most of the time.

So to save the battery health in the long term, I installed a smart plug which turns on and off to allow the battery to stay at about 80%. It turns off at night etc.

Question is, is this actually beneficial? I was thinking about just disabling the automation and reusing the plug else where.

Appreciate y'all thoughts... looking to change today and happy to go with the majority.

Microchip pet feeder that has a timer?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 10:43 PM PST

A little bit of a different post than the others I've seen on here but I think it still applies. I have a SureFlap pet feeder that only opens when it detects the microchip of the intended pet. It works great for my younger kitten who needs food available 24/7 right now, especially since I work long overnight shifts and my older cat will eat any food left out in the open. On the other hand, my older cat has a simple automatic feeder that empties into a bowl set into strict portions 4x a day. This has worked well for years before new kitten.

Cue current problem: kitten has access to his food as described, but it ALSO eating all of the older cats food when the timer goes off. When I'm home I shoo him away but as mentioned, I'm gone for 13-15 hours a day at least 3-4 days a week so I can't always be there. What I need is a microchip feeder (tags will not work, she can't wear a collar due to dermatitis) that also has a timer setting to limit and space out here meals. Does this exist? I've googled and found options almost meeting the criteria but not quite....

Thermostat for AirBNB (Florida) that will automatically set temp when guests not around?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 08:18 AM PST

Hi all. Love this thread (have a c4 system at home). We've got a rental condo in Florida that is mostly airbnb'd. Would love to put in an 'automated' thermostat that will (a) let me set the min/max temp that a guest can set the temp to, (b) automatically sets the temp to X deg when no motion has been sensed for Y hours ... eg. set the temp to 80 deg F after 24 hours of no motion.

What we DON'T want is to have to login and set/reset temps remotely. We want something we can set and forget. Also, we don't have any automation controllers in the condo so the thermostat needs to be self-contained/self-automating.

What thermostats or solutions would you recommend? Anybody have experience doing this in a rental airbnb that can share experience?

    Thanks!

I designed this WhatsApp-connected, RFID-enabled, jack-o'lantern shaped PCB as a doorbell based on a Nano 33 IoT to get notified when my guests press it without checking the door every time and whether they are invited, handed an entrance permit (RFID tag) before entering the house, or not

Schematic for house wiring, mapping breakers?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 05:50 PM PST

Before beginning large-scale replacement of switches, outlets and lights, I'm planning to graphically map my home's electrical, particularly to map each breaker to its lights, receptacles and appliances.

I already have a floor plan made in SketchUp, but I'm wondering what software people use to show the layout of electrical circuits. Also, are there any good examples of what a finished schematic can look like?

Need suggestions on a remote control for AC splits when not renting

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 06:35 PM PST

So we bought a place we plan to rent. It has Fujitsu splits and we want to be able to control the temp remotely especially thru an app. We're not looking to regulate or monitor AC while renting but rather when it's empty like in the winter - make sure pipes don't freeze. We don't know where to start. It is a smart home with VERA

    Rotary Dimmer for UK

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 04:47 PM PST

Hi, I have not extensively searched yet as it is a rabbit hole I do not want to go down just yet but does anyone have any recommendations for a rotary dimmer that can be used in the UK and does not require a neutral line (tall order).

I found this rotary dimmer that seems to suit my needs (but can't find anywhere that sells it) that gives an idea what I am after, I know there is Aurora that make some as well but pricey to say the least (auroralighting).

    Prewire for tablets, cameras

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 09:31 AM PST

What is everyone's thoughts on wall mounted tablets? I am doing a complete strip and remodel of the upstairs of my home. It will become a bedroom and full bath. Should I run cable for wall mounted tablets? Cat5? I don't see the need for them now but maybe in the future? I will also be running around 3 cables for cameras and a wall outlet. I'm thinking 2 outside cameras to show the back side of the house. Does anyone see the need for inside cameras in the bedroom or stairway?

Looking for Wifi Garage Door OPENER/REMOTE CONTROL only. Do they even make this?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 03:24 PM PST

Hey r/ha, my google fu is failing on this so thought I'd just go to the experts again.

Our building has an ancient gate system that I open using a garage door remote with DIP switches. I don't have authority to make any changes to the actual gate hardware, but I DO happen to have a room in our unit that sits just above the receiver/control box for the whole system.

In the past I've added a 433mhz radio to a raspberry Pi to smartly control some rf dumb lights, which worked ok-ish, and I was originally thinking of trying to do the same thing with our gate. However in the interest of time, money, and (if we're being honest here) reliability, I'm hoping to just purchase something.

What I want is a "smart outlet" that plugs in to my wall and connects to my smart home over wifi preferably, and when I activate it the only thing it does is send out the garage open code. Functionally, I want to move my garage door opener inside and be able to trigger it via api/app.

I can't seem to find "just the remote" part of this. I don't want to wire anything, I don't want to replace anything, I just want a wifi-enabled garage door remote. If I can't find a suitable product I'm thinking of picking up a 2nd remote and trying to use a raspberry pi and a relay to close the remote's button circuit. It just seems like overkill though, you know?

    Thanks, in advance!

Heavy blinds with free hanging cords

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 01:18 PM PST

I've been looking for off the shelf solutions to motorise my blinds. I have 2 problems. All the posts seem to be for blinds that operate on a loop string/chain.

    1) They have free hanging cords. The type you pull to the side to engage a lock. 2) They're heavy, 2m long honeycomb blinds.

Any tips to address these problems would be awesome!

    Outdoor spotlights for SmartThings

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 07:15 AM PST

I have a historic building with columns that I want to light up with some LED spotlights. I want ones that can change color and dim. I've found some that come with their own app so I can set schedules and such (example), but I can't find anything that works with SmartThings. Anyone have any leads?

Flood light that has 180 degree motion sensor and remote controlled?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 06:06 PM PST

Does anyone know of any good flood lights that has 180 degree motion sensor? My house has a side entrance alley and currently my flood light can either be positioned in a way where it's pointed at the side gate, pointed completely right under the flood light, or pointed away from the side gate. As you can imagine, any of these 3 positions have can't be used to cover the others.

Not sure if a 180 degree motion sensor is possible... what I had in mind to accomplish this is if the flood light had 2 motion sensors which you can position it to point away from each other to cover the full range

Would be a bonus if also the flood light can be remotely turned on, reason why is because sometimes I want to look out the window to see what is there but I have no way to turn on the flood light unless obviously i go out there and trigger it with motion OR turn the switch off then on again which is in the garage...

    Thanks in advance.

Looking for an outdoor smart plug that works below 100v

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 02:16 PM PST

I'd like to use a pair of smart plugs to switch loads at the end of a (very) long extension cord. Due to voltage loss in the cord when a load is applied the voltage drops to 95ish. This is fine for the appliances being powered but I expect most smart plugs won't be happy. Any suggestions on outdoor smart plugs with a wide input voltage range?

    Ecobee hrv

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 09:08 AM PST

Hello. Fairly new at this stuff. I have some Smartthings devices and an Ecobee 4 thermostat hooked up to my HRV. I would like to program a Smartthings button to turn on the HRV 20 minute timer. But I only see options to change the mode or turn the fan on. Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks

About to convert my Z-Wave/ST setup to Caseta -- then I read about Thread mesh networking

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 07:31 AM PST

I have a smallish system using a first gen SmartThings hub. 3 switches and maybe 4 outlets. Mostly for timing outdoor landscape lighting and automating a few indoor lights with Alexa. I want Alexa out of my house in favor of HomeKit (local control, I trust Apple more than Amazon, etc). I've been eyeing Caseta for some time now and it seems to do a lot of what I want and more. I'm ready to purchase.

But then I started looking into Thread which seems to have been popping up a lot more now that HomePod mini (a replacement for the couple Echo dots I have -- full HomePod is too big/pricey) has been announced. Thread sounds like the ideal system -- open, mesh, hub-less. The Nanoleaf stuff is also looking pretty compelling.

But the switches and outlets aren't quite that popular yet. So I'd be adopting a pretty new (unproven?) standard instead of one I know works very well AND does HomeKit.

What else should I be considering here? Is Thread all that? Anyone on that bandwagon? I would love to have my ST hub and Echos gone for good and all the better if I don't need to mount yet another hub in my closet.

    Alternatives to Smartthings remote button?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 07:04 AM PST

So I just bought my first Samsung smart button and I love it, but now I can't find any in stock to buy more. Anyone know if they're being phased out?

If they are being phased out, is there a good alternative (ideally in the $20 range)? I love that the Smartthings button has three types of activation (single tap, double tap, long press) for different "routines" so ideally I'd like something with some complexity.

Philips wiz lights and Eufy robovac turning on by themselves

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 01:59 PM PST

Every day for at least the last week, our wiz lights (we have 15-20) and our Eufy robovac have turned on/started cleaning by themselves at random times. We initially thought it was a power issue, but today it happened with the vacuum dock unplugged so we think the call is coming from inside the wifi network. We checked the activity log on our Google home, echo, and all smart devices on our network, and none of them show activity. To further complicate things, the lights and the vacuum are currently on two different wifi networks. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?
