    I am building a new home and would love to get advice/feedback from this community on my initial low voltage plans (network, audio, video and security). The home will have 4 floors --- I have included pictures of the floor plan along with my annotations. My budget is about $20,000 for labor and equipment. Here are my goals:

    1. Easy to use and flexible home audio system --- my wife needs to be able to use it without issues! I am hoping to be able to control everything with a single app and easily stream music to any room using an iPhone or Android device. I am not sure how practical it is to have 12 distinct sound zones (as depicted) though I like the idea.
    2. Sound quality is very important to me, so I am open to receiver, amplifier and speaker recommendations based on my budget. A friend recommended Denon or Sonos because both are very consumer friendly, though I am wondering if there is something a bit more high-end I should consider that is also consumer friendly (e.g., compatible with Airplay).
    3. I want my home to be future proof in terms of having network ports available at key locations (e.g., TVs, locations with computers). My plan is to have all low voltage wiring go through conduit to give me more flexibility to pull additional wire in the future. I am open to suggestions in terms of where I should place additional ports.
    4. What is practical in terms of video distribution based on my budget? I don't have good foundational knowledge on this topic.

    Autoshades review

    These shades started as a Kickstarter about a year and a half ago and after lots of delays they've finally shipped. I received mine about a week ago and here are my impressions. First let me say that I knowingly participated in a kickstarter to help them get started, so from day one I accepted the possibility of losing my $$ or getting a bad product.

    The shades were intended to be affordable alternatives to the much more expensive automated shades that were on the market at the time. Unfortunately (for the Dreamer Technologies team), Ikea has filled that affordable niche with blinds that are better in every way at a similar price.

    They are made of a large aluminum tube with a motor on the inside and small plastic mounts for the wall. You have to secure the shade to the tube using double sided tape. If you do not install it perfectly it will roll up unevenly, causing the motor to bind. This is probably the worst design choice. There are many comments on their kickstarter page about the entire assembly being cut too large, with no mechanism to make adjustments. Mine were almost 1/2 inch larger than my requested specs, causing them to be unusable for an inside-mount installation. Other common issues are roller pegs on the ends which easily get pushed into the tube are are difficult to retrieve. Poor installation instructions are another problem, since they lack any pictures, measurements, or details.

    None of the integrations or web-apps have been released, despite some of their 2019 project updates saying they were done. That includes Google, Alexa, phone apps, and Home Assistant. I'm not sure why they still aren't released, considering most of the delays were due to supply problems and there was plenty of time to work on software.

    I hope for the best for this startup. However, they need a lot of polishing from top to bottom for them to be a viable solution.

    MQTT logging to cloud

    Hi,

    Apologies if I'm missing something obvious, I'm fairly new to MQTT.

    I have a "commercial" solar monitoring system (ICC) running embedded on a Pi, it has the Mosquitto broker installed and it's MQTT client points to localhost, I can change it from localhost in the UI server (IP, port, user & pass) no mention of SSL though.

    The system generates something like 150 topics every second.

    Ideally I want to subscribe to a few topics in the cloud:

    inverter/solar

    inverter/amps

    inverter/mode

    inverter/volts

    inverter/temp

    So a lot less than 150 topics and mode, volts, and temp don't change very much and so I'm only interesting in storing one data point per minute for those and triggering on mode change or over temp or voltage conditions. Solar & Amps I would want a data point every 5 seconds.

    Using https://io.adafruit.com/ for example the free tier gives 30 data points per minute, 30 days of data storage, Triggers every 15 minutes and a 5 feed limit. So I have 5 feeds and want 27 data points per minute so I can probably use this.

    So I think I have to setup Mosquitto (as a bridge) on a server at home, point the bridge at the Adafruit IO broker (with SSL) and point the ICC client at the bridge.

    But can I "throttle" the rate of topic data going to Adafruit:

    inverter/solar from 60 a minute to 12

    inverter/amps from 60 a minute to 12

    inverter/mode from 60 a minute to 1

    inverter/volts from 60 a minute to 1

    inverter/temp from 60 a minute to 1

    Google Assistant - PC control

    All I want to do is "Ok Google, Good night," and lights, and PCs shut down.

    INovelli Fan Light combo switch help

    So I have Ceiling fans with lights and they are running off GE switches or brilliant switches and I want them all to be INovelli. So I have all these INovelli fan light combo switches that I'm stoked about. Now the problem. My wiring has two distinct paddle switches for each ceiling fan one for light and one for fan. With the combo switch this obviously leaves me with an empty spot. I could cover with nothing but I'm. Not keen on this. Instead what I would like is to have another INovelli red switch that doesn't actually control anything and I'd just create scenes for the multi presses.

    My problem is I have no idea how to wire a switch that goes nowhere. Anyone ever done this?

    Other dimmers or bulbs with Pico remotes?

    Hi friends,

    I'm dipping my toes into what may be a lighting project for the whole house. I really like the Pico remotes so far. But trying to see if there is a viable solution for Pico remotes with a different ecosystem of dimmers, and see what you guys would recommend.

    I know with the lutron smart bridge pro version I can tie it into something like homeassistant, which is the plan anyway. But can that be integrated seamlessly enough with a different set of not-so-premium dimmers? Any performance/delay drawbacks? Other experience?

    My reluctance for Caseta -

    • Bunch of spots with two switches in a single gang that I'd rather not redo drywall to add 2 dimmers
    • Better scene control from the in-wall dimmer, such as under cabinet lights
    • $$$

    What's up with my zooz switch?

    I installed several Zooz Zen21 switches on Thursday. Most are working great. One keeps dying on me. 2 days in a row now, it's working when I leave for the day, but when I come home it's dead. Hubitat showed it as "on" all day, but the lights (which were on when I left) are off. When I try to switch it in Hubitat it just says "sending" and never switches. Pushing the paddle does nothing. The blue LED is off.

    This is a 3 way switch. I haven't rewired the other box yet (waiting on some other stuff to come in). The load is 1 fixture with 3 LED bulbs at 3.5 watts each.

    Yesterday I opened the box back up, reseated the connections, put it all back and it worked. I haven't had time to do anything about it today.

    Did I damage the switch by not rewiring the other end the of the 3 way? Is this maybe a bad switch?

    My Leviton is down

    I can't login or reset the password for My Leviton. It was working great until today. I don't think I'm the only one having this issue with MyLeviton. Anyone else experiencing this?

    EDIT: It looks like its back to normal now. However, a few of the most recent reviews left on their google play store app indicates that others have experienced this issue around the same time that I did.

    Please help me with a shopping list to make my new apartment smart

    I bought a new apartment with my fiancé December last year in Brazil, it's going through renovations now, it took some time to start due to covid, but is close to finishing now.

    I was offered an overpriced deal from a homeautmation company, then a friend offered to do it for a high fee as well, and I thought I can possibily do it myself. Being in Brazil limits my spectrum of products, but I know I can buy zigbee Sonoff here or through aliexpress.I hope someone can help me out with a shopping list, and some tips on how to set it all up.

    What I want to achieve:

    1. Ability to control any of the five air conditioners in the apartment (living room/kitchen, balcony, bedroom1, bedroom2, home office).
    2. Control lighting of the whole apartment.
      1. Nine switches are dimmable, five are not (will list below all my lighting spots and switches)
    3. Blinds which will be installed in the home office, which is a small balcony connected with the two bedrooms.
    4. Curtains between livingroom and balcony - already purchased Aqara through aliexpress.
    5. Set up moods (good morning, movie time, etc)
    6. I would prefer to have it set up on Apple, and am considering buying the Apple Homepod, unless you change my mind.

    Suggestion for outdoor camera

    I've been digging around for an outdoor camera for my backyard. I'm at a wit's end because I haven't been able to find something that fits my requirements. I'm reasonably sure what I'm looking for doesn't exist, but I figured I'd reach out to the community for suggestions.

    Here's what I need:

    • Works with HomeAssistant -- at a minimum if the camera can support RTSP, I'm good

    • Wireless -- I need to place the camera in a part of my backyard that doesn't have any power outlets. I'm loathe to run a wire (PoE or otherwise) through my yard to power the camera. I'm open to either solar (ideal) or battery powered.

    • No hubs -- Blink sort of fits the bill for me, but it requires a hub. I'm on a "no more hubs" crusade.

    Nice to have features:

    • Motion sensor exposure via Hass -- The Amcrest platform on Hass seems to expose the on-board motion sensor. I'd like to get push notifications on movement, but this isn't a must have since I can by stand-alone sensors

    • Flood light -- don't really care about this strongly, but might be a tie breaker

    Does this exist? There are a lot of cameras that tick off 2 of my 3 requirements.

    Local Hub Recommendations

    I'm looking for recommendations for a smart home hub that features local processing. I have been looking into Hubitat and Vera, but I'm conflicted about which one is a better option for me. I saw there are some older threads on this subject from 2019, but looking for some more recent opinions.

    Features that are important to me are local processing (if my internet goes offline, I'd like it to still work), longevity (if the company goes under, the device isn't useless), reliability, and ease of use in creating automations. Additionally, I'd like a dashboard to manually control devices in one central app.

    Currently, in my home, I have mostly wifi-connected smart devices. I have some Hue bulbs, Roomba, Kasa outlet plugs, Wyze cameras, Chamberlain MyQ, Samsung Smart TV, NVIDIA Shield, Dyson Fan, Sonos, Logitech Harmony, and probably some other devices I'm forgetting. Currently, I either control these by their individual apps or by Alexa. I also have a Google Home, but it isn't used as often. I am also in the process of setting up HomeBridge on a raspberry pi for HomeKit.

    In the somewhat near future (3-12 months), I plan to buy some other devices, including a Nest Hello, Nest thermostat, Sage Z-Wave Doorbell Sensor, Inovelli wall switches, and August smart locks.

    Long term (12+ months) I am considering purchasing some additional outdoor cameras, siren, water leak sensors, and door/window sensors.

    Does anyone have any recommendations on a smart hub with local processing? Thanks in advance!

    Smart home Pool Controls?

    Hi All, I just bought a new house that has a beautiful lap pool in the back. The controller though looks absolutely ancient and my wife (the primary swimmer) is struggling to figure it out. I installed new thermostats, I added a Raccio 3 for the sprinkler system and now I would love to update the pool controller. Right now we have an older Aqualink RS6. Do you guys know of any pool controllers that I can use via smarthome methods? My system supports Zigbee, Z-wave and Wifi so any recommendations would be great.

    Please critique my planed home network setup

    So I've got a new home and will be renovating the electrics from scratch. With that I also wanted to plan out how I'll set up my networking. This is my one chance to lay everything as I want it, because the walls will have to be opened up for electric cables anyway.

    I've done some reading up and here's the plan I kind of enviosioned https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RT7-pqjhf_Tqm0MqTZaqweO-Ng2sO11N?usp=sharing (forgive the crude drawing, I'd appreciate any links to these mindmapping/floor plan sketching people seem to be using to plan such things).

    The internet cable comes in from the basement, which is where I'd probably situate the network cabinet. The 2 positions where it'd fit best would be 1 (directly where the cable comes into the house, but close to the drainage pipe) or 2 (under the stairs). 3 is where the network cables will run up and be distributed across the house, it's an empty unused chimney.

    I'm planning to set up a smart home and will probably mostly use Z-Wave devices, general consensus seems to be that they're more secure and it's a network protocoll that doesn't compete with WiFi's frequencies. I'll use Z-Wave relays from Fibaro that I'll input behind the dumb wall switches (clicker switches, so the ones that go back to the original position after pressing and don't change position). I guess if it's a single switch it'll be Single relay, for double switches a Duo Relay, for shutters a Shutter relay and maybe a RGBW relay for playing around with LED lights in the living room. I plan to run at least a duplex network cable into each room, terminate it as a wall socket and connect the other end to a patch panel in the basement. I'm still thinking of which window/door sensors to get.

    If I install just 2 wireless access points from Ubiquiti (1 per floor), would the WiFi connection be good enough or should I think of getting more? I've look at the diagram and it seems I'd actually only need about ~4 ports for PoE, the other devices wouldn't need PoE. But then it seems that just buying a 24 port router with PoE from Ubiquiti costs the same as mixing and matching 16 port + 8 port routers.

    Is there anything I'm missing here or haven't considered? Obviously it's my first time planning such a thing out, so it was a bit of an overwhelming undertaking

    That's really all the plug needs to do. When usage drops below a certain threshold, send me a notification that the washer is done. I would ideally like for it to be able to connect to Alexa so it can announce it on the smart speakers. I don't have an additionally controller or hub for smart devices at the moment since we don't use much more yet than the Hue lights we bought a couple years ago.

    I'd love for your suggestions since I can't seem to find the information on the models I am finding. The only one I am seeing that might be a good fit for an absolute beginner like us would be the Wemo Insight Smart Plug. But I'm also seeing some mixed reviews on the model so I'm not sure. I started by looking at the TP Link HS110, but they seem to have a high failure rate.

    Keep track of routines and automations?

    I want to say right off the bat that I am in the process of transitioning to Hubitat and my goal is to move all possible routines/automations there but I am curious.

    Platforms I use in alphabetical order: Alexa, Eufy, Google Home, Govee, Hass.io, Hubitat, IFTTT pro, iHC/Broadlink, iPhone/Siri/homekit/ios shortcuts, Meross, Mi Home (Roborock vac), MyQ, Nest, Phillips Hue, Smart Life, SmartThings, Switchbot, Tasker, WeBack (other smart vacs), and Wyze.

    How are you keeping track of what routines and automations you have where? I feel like all of the different platforms I use have some sort of automation or routine function and I feel like it's SUPER easy to forget what is where or break something on accident. Do you guys keep spreadsheets?

    How to handle/prevent duplicate devices when using multiple hubs?

    Hi. I have Hue and SmartThings and both are accessible from Google Home and Alexa. This means all my bulbs appear twice. What's the best way to manage this?

    Live with it and just select both when adding to a room? Don't link Hue and just use ST? Some other clever selective device magic?

    Wireless chainlink driver for roller blinds

    The UK is a strange place at times. Despite the information that 37mm in diameter roller blinds are available for "wider" rollers. I got a 32mm one instead. So my plan of automating blinds with flashed Zemismart motorised roller went through the proverbial window.

    I finally gave in and tried the wireless drivers to move the roller blinds by the chainlink. Not only they are cable-free but look pretty flashable with Tasmota.

    I'm in the process of updating my home. I recently ditched Xfinity Cable TV and Xfinity Home Security and am only using them for Internet - I am taking YouTube TV for a spin and currently us Google Home as my "hub" with several Nest mini speakers throughout my house... but this doesn't allow me to integrate Zigbee or Z-wave.

    EVERY REVIEW I READ ONLINE HAS PROS AND CONS.

    PEOPLE EITHER LOVE A PRODUCT OR DESPISE IT.

    I am looking to DIY a security system, and put the Zigbee sensors to use that Xfinity let me keep to use but they need a Zigbee "hub" to connect... which Google doesn't have.

    I'm exploring SmartThings and their router option and new modem to replace my rented Xfinity modem/router to save a few extra bucks there as well... researching the best route to take is making my head spin

    Between Docsis 3.0 vs 3.1 options, Zigbee vs z-Wave vs Thread, cloud vs local, etc I'm having a hard time committing to family of products, in fear of the tech becomming outdated/irrelevant in just a few years as Home Automation continues to develop.

    IF YOU WERE BUILDING OUT FROM SCRATCH TODAY - WHAT PATH WOULD YOU TAKE?

    Any suggestions or help finding clarity on purchasing decisions appreciated!

    Smart Home Solutions to Dementia/Wondering

    Hello,

    For a year now, my SO's grandparents have been living with us. Her grandparents are elderly, 75 and 85. Her grandfather suffers from dementia, and tends to wander at night.

    This hasn't been a problem for the first year or so they have been with us. However, just the other day, her grandfather woke up early in the morning (probably between 4am and 6am), and left the house walking down the driveway. We live pretty isolated, so there are not passersby who would spot him. We found him sitting on the ground ~400ft from the house. In the Winter, he could have easily been seriously injured by the cold, or killed.

    I am looking for a smart home solution to perhaps help us keep this from happening again. My first thought was an IFTTT, where we had a sensor on the door, some button or way to activate the script. If the door opened while this was 'armed', I could turn on my bedroom lights/play a charm/push a notification. In my head, it would be nice if there was a simple RGB zigbee/zwave button I could put by the front door, that would turn red when 'armed'.

    Another solution might be a proximity bracelet of some kind that he would wear, and similar to knowing when a 'phone' was connected, we could trigger when that bracelet leaves the network.

    Any and all thoughts on this solution or other potential solutions are very much appreciated. This feels like such a natural extension of smart home capabilities, it would be nice if I could take advantage of some of this.

    Other Info: I have a SmartThings hub, alexa and google smart speakers, as well as most of the lights in my house are run on (various) in wall smart switches.

    Smart Outlet with a web interface that will work in a secure environment

    Hello,

    I work in the K12 environment and I need to put a few smart outlets to reboot devices that staff is somehow incapable of doing. I need a smart outlet that can:

    • Connect to enterprise network
    • Does not require an app *
    • Must have a web interface or at least connect to something we can setup
    • Does not connect outside networks, it must stay within our network and will only be accessible from our network. *
    • I'd like to not have to flash them with custom firmware, would prefer to work out of the box *
    • Having to set up a control panel is OK, we have a big VMWare infrastructure

    * Most important. It absolutely must NOT connect to an outside network nor should it require full internet access (it will be blocked and isolated). We should only be able to access via web interface.

    We are probably going to be expanding to over 50 devices at some point.
