Manual to use non-Homekit devices with Homekit (using Raspberry Pi & Homebridge) Posted: 07 Apr 2021 04:01 AM PDT Hey everybody, I've recently integrated some non-Homekit-compatible lights in my Homekit system. I used a Philips Hue Homebridge for this (I already had one), and also used a Raspberry Pi with Homebridge on it. Since I had a lot of work with figuring out how to do this, and because many info is shattered around the web on different sites, I bundled it myself in a manual. And since I use a lot of info provided by others, I thought it would be nice to give something in return. So, if you're looking for a step-by-step guide on how to integrate non-Homekit lights in Homekit, with the use of a Raspberry Pi, Hue Bridge & Homebridge (free software), I hope this guide can help you out! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rKBK9hMrdtiozEJA6kK8j0kM-5SPS3WK/view Best of luck! Transmitting to 433 MHz display Posted: 07 Apr 2021 06:26 AM PDT I have this Govee weather station that uses a 433 Mhz transmitter. I would like to replace the transmitter with data from my home automation system. What can I use to transmit 433 Mhz data in the correct format to the screen? [link] [comments]
Temperature automation LG dual split devices Posted: 07 Apr 2021 11:30 PM PDT Hi all. I have 4 lg dual split heat pumps installed in my home. However the temperature control on those devices is terrible. Going in to a standby mode, consuming energy and blowing cold air in. I made some IR blasting thermostats with an arduino, it works fine but I am looking for alternative solutions. The units are connected over the Wifi and can be operated via the dedicated app and google home. I was thinking, can I make an arduino circuit that monitors the temperature and send a google command, instead of blasting IR (sometimes a missfire happens). [link] [comments]

Xiaomi motion sensor notifications going off regardless of HUB surveillance mode Posted: 07 Apr 2021 08:03 AM PDT I have motion sensors, door/window sensors, a switch and a camera. I have notifications going in the automation tab everytime something moves past the sensor. Ok fine, but can it do that ONLY when I am not home after leaving the surveillance on the HUB turned ON ? I want this:
Right now, notifications are sent even if surveillance is OFF. Cannot see in automation of notifications the condition based on surveillance of the HUB being on or off [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 08:02 AM PDT So I made a fat finger purchase and bought 4 instead of two Google Coral TPUs. Currently I'm using 1 for object detection on security cameras, but I'd like to find some use for the others too. Any ideas? I guess it supports TensorFlow Lite so any projects using that would be a potential fit. What are you all using these for? [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Apr 2021 07:54 AM PDT Hey everyone. I've been searching for a smart doorbell system to replace what I currently have(non-smart), but I've run across some difficulties/questions, which is why I'm making this post. Please note that I'm not experienced at all when it comes to smart home devices and home automation, and this is the first actual thing/project I want to do with smart devices. First of all, here's a rough layout of my building. The last 2 floors are the same house and have the same internet network, while the other floors have their own networks. The current doorbell system is like this. One doorbell rings on the 1st floor, while the other rings in both the 2nd and 3rd floors. When people ring the doorbell, I can see them, talk to them and open the ground door with the press of one button from any floor. I'm currently living in the last floor, while my parents live in the one below (but it's the same house, as I said). What I'd like to do is, at the very least, to install a separate, smart doorbell for the last floor only, as I'd like to be able to see, record and talk to people ringing my bell, and also open the ground door for them smartly from my phone (a separate ringing device is not a necessity). My main questions are:
Consider that we have control over the ground floor internet/wifi and it could be used if necessary. I was also wondering if there's a more general and elegant solution to this whole situation which brings me to my last question:
While I don't have an infinite budget, please don't limit your answers to a specific budget, I'd like to be aware of all the options that I have and find the best option for my case. Any answers and tips regarding all the above would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Any power strip recommendations for wall warts Posted: 07 Apr 2021 09:41 AM PDT I've got a few of the hue light strip power supplies and some zigbee plugs, They tend to take up most of the power strips size. I've been on the lookout for larger strips and usually the plugs are the wrong orientation. I was just planning on using some 6" or 12" power extension cables but if there is a better way, I'd appreciate it. [link] [comments]
IR or Zwave to 1/8” stereo mini jack dry contact closure switch? Posted: 07 Apr 2021 11:21 AM PDT I have a TV Lift mechanism (link) that used to trigger well based on power usage, but my new smart TV won't work effectively with the power based mechanism so I need another way to remotely trigger it, preferably without the included RF remote. The manual notes it can be triggered by a 3.5mm stereo contact switch with up/down switch. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to integrate with an IR receiver or ZWave unit to control as part of a scene? Could something like this product (link) be adapted to meet the need? I'm hoping to be able to include it as part of my home automation either via ZWave or via Harmony hub, but first need to figure out a way to connect the dry contact closure to a broader system. devices talking to smart home hub a.k.a. longevity Posted: 07 Apr 2021 02:42 PM PDT Hi All, when a wifi device (like a light bulb) is installed and configured to work with Alexa or Google Home, does the device still talk to it's own company server first, and then to google? or does it talk directly to google? I'm asking this because I decided to dive into home automation with bulbs and light switches. I see several options for inexpensive smart light switches and bulbs from companies I never heard of. I would like to know if my device operation relies on the company maintaining their servers or not. I would like to know that all the investment in money and time to wire my house will not be tied to longevity of some unknown overseas company. If the company goes out of business, will my light bulbs and switches still work, or will I have to change up everything? Just to be clear, I'm asking only about devices that are controlled remotely, not store anything on the server. I understand things like a camera that uses cloud storage of course needs the parent company to maintain the server. [link] [comments]
DIY Smart Blinds (for pre-existing roller blinds) Posted: 07 Apr 2021 02:39 PM PDT I have your typical standard roller blinds currently. In the bedroom there's 3 on the one wall for 3 narrow windows (each a metre or so wide). Hoping to make these automated, via app but mostly to be used through Google home commands. Suggestions on the best way to go about this? / Best products on the market to achieve this result? Preferably something cordless.. I've seen Kogan's smart blind controller, but it appears require a cord which isn't ideal as I'd rather the setup to be somewhat discreet or atleast neat. Hit me with your suggestions ! 😁 [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Apr 2021 10:17 AM PDT Sounds like such a simple thing but I just can't find a way to do this with either Alexa or IFTTT. I want to be able to play one of my own video files on either my echo show, firestick or facebook portal but triggered from an Alexa routine or even just automatically play at the same time every day. I have tried My Pod and Amazon Photos but I just want to be able to play my own content. Anyone have any ideas? Cheers, Steve [link] [comments]
Using SmartThings (or something else) to trigger Google Home Routine With Geofencing Posted: 07 Apr 2021 01:33 PM PDT I'm new to this and i've spent several hours trying to do something that should be very simple. When I leave home I want the following to happen: · Phone says "setting occupancy away" · Smart Window AC Temp Change · Ecobee Thermostat Temp Change · Arm Simplisafe Security I got everything working through the Google Home app, but it surprisingly doesn't support geofencing for home and away AFAIK, you have to say a voice command to trigger it. So I linked Google Assistant to SmartThings and set up SmartThings too turn on a virtual switch when I'm home, Using the SmartThings geofencing. The virtual switch successfully appears in Google Home app. But Google Home does not seem to have an option to trigger routines based on the status of that virtual switch. Only time of day or voice commands. Most of my smart home stuff Including the window AC unit and alarm system support Google Assistant but not smart things , so I can't do everything in SmartThings. I imagine this is a very common problem but I can't find a proper solution anywhere. All I want to do is trigger Google Assistant commands or a Google Home routine using something that supports geofencing. Thanks [link] [comments]

Remotes for lutron caseta or RA2 select Posted: 07 Apr 2021 11:42 AM PDT New at all this and trying to figure out options for lighting, particularly looking at caseta vs RA2 select Bought a house built in the late 40s and want to start bringing things up to date with some home automation, starting with the lighting as currently everything is on old toggle switches with non-LED dimmers that make the lights flicker and buzz. Most switches in the house are single-pole with a few 3-way. There are some locations that are currently single pole but things would benefit from adding a remote (not going to add a traveler wire). I haven't taken down all of the existing switches to look at the wiring, but so far i haven't found any neutral wires where I have looked. In my searching, Lutron seems to be one of the most favored options for smart switches in the absence of a neutral (and maybe also even when a neutral is available). So now I'm trying to decide between caseta and RA2 select (RadioRA 2 seems beyond my needs/means). I have seen a number of posts about the differences including max number of devices, range, compatible devices. I don't really want to replace all of the switches in the house in order to save some time/money, but I would prefer the switches to largely match throughout the house, rather than looking randomly cobbled together as can happen with older houses that are updated piecemeal over time. For this reason, I kind of like the idea that with RA2 select and the maestro line I can keep the smart and dumb matching (and the master and companion switches on the existing 3-ways match as well). I also think i just prefer the maestro dimmers to the caseta dimmers. And i have seen other people talking about this reason as well in other posts. HOWEVER, as best I can tell if I want to add wall mounted remotes there will be some mismatching as there don't seem to be any remotes that just look like maestro dimmers/switches. Is this correct? I have seen people talking about using RA2 select to get everything to match, but I have never seen remotes discussed in the same threads. If this is the case, given the fact that caseta hardware is cheaper than RA2 select, should I just use my budget to buy more smart caseta stuff rather than less RA2 select? [link] [comments] |
