    Wifi 3 way dimmer switch

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 08:01 PM PDT

I'm starting some smart integration. We are Google all in, but don't really use beyond control of tv, shield, and Harmony hub. I don't really want to add a zwave hub, so I'm hoping there's a device similar to zooz or innovelli 3-way w/dimming support but wifi.

I have 3 - 3 way with dimmers that need to be replaced would love to replace only one side if possible. Ie leaving a basic mechanical switch on the other end. The last switch is a simple dimmer. All led bulbs, but one switch controls 9 lights ~ 90 watts worse case.

    Thoughts?

Bar digital advertising display as a home status display

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 02:36 PM PDT

This may be a long shot, but I figured this was at least a relevant community. Red Bull has been using LCD displays with exceptional viewing angles and image quality for advertising in bars for the last year or so, but for the life of me I can't find who makes them or where they can be bought online.

Has anyone seen these, or does anyone work in the industry and happen to know where these come from? Here's a photograph of one with and without flash.

Ever since I first saw one of these I've wanted to turn one into a Magic Mirror-style informational display, but I haven't been able to find a manufacturer or any that have made their way to eBay.

Edit: I should have originally included this, but this display is about 18-24" diagonal. I didn't realize the perspective in my pictures isn't too obvious. For reference, the poster to the lower-left of the display on the first picture is printed on an 11x17 piece of paper.

Using VOIP phone as control panel

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 09:03 PM PDT

Many VOIP phones seem to have web browsers. It seems like a great screen to use to interact with Home Automation.

Has anyone ever tried using a VOIP phone with a color touch screen as a control panel?

Smart lock for narrow door backset?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 06:41 PM PDT

Hi, I have a small room for my dog in my house with a custom door made from 2x4s. I'd love to put a smart lock on it so I can let him out using Alexa, but all the smart locks I've seen need to be mounted too far away from the edge of the door. The wood strip I would need to mount the lock on is only 3.5" wide. Doesn't need to be a full on secure smart lock if some kind of actuator would work. Ideas?

[Update #2] Hunter Douglas PowerView Shades

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 07:49 AM PDT

For those still following my saga of Hunter Douglas PowerView Shades from my previous thread, here's an update to my update.

I think the easiest way would be to re-address the issues that I had:

    • Bad manufacturing experience
I had shades that required adjusting, but when my installer returned to do some of the adjustments, the shades seemed to have "fixed" themselves. Basically, the shades weren't always completely unrolling themselves (despite having their limits set and reset). It seems like it's more a physical defect with the motors that aren't always stopping at the same spot. Sometimes my shade will hit the window frame at the bottom, sometimes it won't...
      • I'll keep an eye out for this issue and see if there's any new developments in the future.
    • RF interference
I got this issue largely fixed. After some trial and error, I've found out that the shades were getting a horrible amount of interference from my WyzeCams (flashed with DaFang Hacks). I used to have 8 cams and I disabled two of them and now all my interference problems are gone.
      • The blinds are super responsive (especially if I use the remote or their app) and fairly responsive when I use Homekit. It's reached the point where the failure rate is less than 5%.
      • I can't say for sure that the WyzeCams are at fault here for interfering, because I did multiple changes at the same time...
        • I changed the bandwidth and lowered the resolution to some cameras.
        • I changed the channel of my Zigbee devices from 25 to 11
        • I reset my whole Zigbee network because I goofed
    • Delayed response
I still get some delayed response, but this would fall into the 5% failure rate.
    • Horrible user interface with their native app
This hasn't changed.... Their app is still just.... horrible...
    • The Hub has a mind of it's own
I currently have the hub connected via Ethernet and it still disconnects every now and then (I only notice this when I'm on the computer (next to the hub) and the light starts it's reconnecting colors).

For the time being, I am very satisfied with my purchase and once this whole COVID thing is over, I will be visiting a friend of mine that has had Somfy shades installed and I'll see how they are compared to mine.

    Don’t trust Fing!

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 09:22 PM PDT

I've just reflashed one of many bulbs and upgraded to Tasmota full from minimal, did the usual procedure of using Fing on iPad to find the IP and nothing was present with Tasmota-xxxx. After giving up after trying the 7 switch recovery multiple times I decided to try to scan for the AP in my router (Lede firmware), nothing there but had a quick look in DCHP and there it was with the IP and not in AP mode, I've renamed it Zombie.

    Fan/Ventilator?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 08:58 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking for a small ventilator/fan for the desk that allows for integration in home assistant.

I don't mind doing some tinkering to get it to work, as long as its possible. (I usually always replace the firmware on my IOT devices with some open source one, such as ESPHome)

I'd love to have not only on/off functionality but also a level/fan speed that I an adjust. Otherwise I would have just picked a random one and use a smart switch to turn it on and off. Any recommendations?

Working through plans for new (to us) home, in the research stage.

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 11:48 AM PDT

    Hi folks,

Hoping someone can provide me with some guidance on plans/pieces of the system I am working out.

    The House

    • Home closes 8/28, we will be doing flooring/painting ourselves (with help) before moving in
    • 3 levels, 2150sqft
    • 20 year old boiler with 1 zone per level
      • one boiler with each tstat connected to a valve in the basement
      • baseboard radiators, unsure if they have easily accessible individual adjustments
      • Basement: half finished with one large room, tstat near stairs
      • Main Floor: kitchen, dining, living, master bed, 1/2 bath, tstat in living room
      • 2nd floor: 2 bedrooms, full bath, landing with balcony door, tstat on landing, door at bottom of stairs
    • all 3 tstats are currently the dumbest of dumb round ones with dials

    Plan So Far

    • Currently have 4 Echo audio devices around house, no integrations
    • Buy RPi 4 model B 2GB and install Home Assistant and 32GB micro SD
    • Buy 3 new wifi/zwave tstats to replace dumb ones
      • Would like them to be as dumb as possible while being controllable locally (not particularly interested in Nest/Ecobee)
      • Would love current recommendations, my considerations: *Radio Thermostat ct50 looked promising but seems to have terrible support/docs
      • Manual setup with relays, etc seems too complex for me to do, especially given that there are 3 valves
      • Current best bet appears to be Honeywell Intrusion TH320ZW2003, but isn't particularly cheap at $110 on Amazon
      • I do not know for sure if I have C wire. Seems... unlikely, but I won't know until we close, presumably
    • Wait until I have more devices to buy into my first ecosystem of the big three (unless tstats are not wifi)
      • My inclination is to avoid hubs and use USB device(s), but I could be convinced otherwise

    Goals

    • Centralize heating and cooling
      • Currently have window/portable AC units with no IR, smart plugs seem like they should work here
    • Integrate Echo devices
    • Lay framework/plan for:
      • temperature/humidity sensors
      • door/windows sensors
      • motion sensors
      • cameras (likely far down the line)
      • non-connected security system
      • 2 x garage door opener integration
      • playing with lights, prefer switches to smart bulbs in general, but there isn't a lot of overhead lighting in the home
      • home theater integration (Denon AVR-X4000 seems likely to be supported, XBox 360 S, panasonic smart(ish) TV, gaming PC)
      • IR Blaster?
      • door locks
      • Playing with the many cheap sensors out there

    Bottom line

Looking for recs on purchases and next steps.

Probably will buy the RPi to start fiddling with the toys I have currently.

Recommendations on protocols and specific products are welcome.

What would you do if you could start fresh?

I hope I covered the basics, as you can see I'm early in my research. Not afraid to dig into research, mostly looking for guidance on next steps for planning.

    Cheers and thanks!

Edit: My immediate goals are get the RPi up and get new tstats asap. Don't want to buy, then replace, nonconnected tstats. And the dumb ones have to go before we start needing the heat.

Simple WiFi camera setup with recording and live streaming

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 11:37 AM PDT

The long term plan is more automation - lights, thermostat, sensors - but for now I want something simple that I can later expand into that.

I have a chicken coop about 50ft from the WiFi router, but there is 110v power to plug in a camera, so I can check on the chicks occasionally (so I need live streaming) - also, the kids would like to see it on either a PC or a Roku/Firestick, again live. The 2G signal strength in the coop is fine, at least according to my phone. A temperature sensor would be useful to, whether WiFi or able to connect to a PC/hub/whatever 50ft away inside the house.

I also want a security camera both outside the front door and inside the house. In this case I want to record - maybe automatically overwriting anything more than a few weeks old.

In both cases I want to use a PC that's constantly on to do the storage/streaming - it's already a Plex media server. I do NOT want to use any external services - the pain of having Lowes' Iris kit die on me, plus the recent Wink debacle has convinced me of that. However, if I can have an application running on that PC that allows *me* to access it from outside the house, then so much the better (yes I know there is a good chance of hacking).

Can anyone please recommend a combination of cameras, software, and (if I need one) hub for this kind of set up please? I'm not made of money, but it does not have to be fancy at all. Many thanks.

    Zwave/Wifi indoor lever lock

Looking for recommendations for an indoor locking door handle (lever-type lock?) that I can lock/unlock remotely (preferably through smartthings). No dead bolt, but a locking handle. Keypad or fingerprint a plus.

    TIA for any recs.

Difference between Kwikset 888 and 910 (also 914 I guess)

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 05:43 PM PDT

    Hey Everyone,

So I think I have narrowed down my new smartlock to the the kwikset 888 or 910 z-wave but I am having a hard time telling the difference between the two besides some minor shape differences. Also I was looking on another page and it said the only difference between the 910 and the 914 was the 914 is better at handling misalignment. Can anyone please shed some light on these or even offer some better solutions if these are no longer recommended. I do not yet have my home automation set up but it will be Home assistant.

    Lutron Caseta Intall - PD-6WCL

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 01:33 PM PDT

    Lutron Caseta Intall - PD-6WCL

When popping off the very old style dimmer in my buddies house, i noticved a white / black / Green (ground) so i thought the install was going to be easy. Did the ground to ground, and attached the white and black from the switch to the two black wires coming out the back of the Lutron.

The lights turned on after we put the power back, but the lutron had no power to it. Nothing worked, i tried many variations of the wiring and still the Lutron didnt work. Assumed faulty unit, replaced it, same issue on the next one.

I tested both the white and black and found that both were in fact hot...has anyone come across that before? essentially a ground a two hot wires (its an older house)...photos show the old switch and the new we tried to wire up. Dont mind out its connected, it was just something i tried to see if it would work since we were frustrsted. Im assuming the switch isnt working because both wires coming in were hot...

FYI - We went to another switch location where the white wire wasnt hot and everything worked fine.

new switch - dont mind the weird wiring

olddddd lutron dimmer we removed - soldered the wires (never seen that before)

Monitor & speaker switch - from desk to kitchen

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 05:06 PM PDT

    Hello r/homeautomation,

For a while now I've been trying to think of a way to conveniently switch my display and audio outputs between my primary desk setup, and a monitor/speaker pair that would sit on a bar in my kitchen (it's quite close to my PC - I live in a small apartment). The idea is that I'd be able to move between my desk to the kitchen and seamlessly continue watching/listening to a TV show or movie.

I recently stumbled across "switch" devices, which seem to allow you to plug in to different inputs and toggle the output between them. I've found both HDMI switchers and audio switchers online - would this be the best approach? Would a splitter be a better choice, or do they have limitations? Are all these devices compatible with PCs (using and HDMI and regular audio aux cable). Are there any devices that could switch/split both display and audio (rather than two separate devices)? Lastly, and this likely changes the scope of the project a little, but can you think of a means of automating this switch between monitor/speaker via motion detection? I'd be happy to buy the necessary devices to facilitate it if it's reasonably feasible.

Curious for your thoughts; let me know if you have any suggestions that could help facilitate a lazy man's lazy ambitions :)

    Outdoor smart dimmer switch?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 04:57 PM PDT

We are building a pavilion and will have recessed lighting. The switch for the lights will be on a post of the pavilion (so not indoors and exposed to the elements). My wife at a minimum wants them dimmable. I'd prefer if the were smart as well (for when the kids leave it on so I can turn it off from inside). We don't have any smart switches in our house but I planned on using Lutron (haven't gotten around to changing any over). Searching hasn't yielded me many results. Is this doable? I think if it's put in a weatherproof gang box that it should be OK? Am I not thinking of any other options?

Outdoor smart plugs vs cold winters

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 05:35 AM PDT

    Question is at the end

So I've been interested in those outdoor smart plugs for a while now and I was wondering how they perform during the winter. We have Christmas lights that we hang our front porch for the whole winter. In the past we had a plug screwed in one of the front porch lights, but we changed the lights so we have no longer have that option.

I've looked around for those outdoor smart plugs and notice that most of them are raided for -20C (-4F). Its rarely above -20C during the winter in my area.

Has anyone ever tried them in -20C to -40C temps? Are there some that are raided for those temps? I've looked around abit and they all seem to have the same spec in that regard. My main use case is just for the winter.
