Automation for a tiny apartment Posted: 21 Jul 2020 01:26 AM PDT Long story short, moved from big house in the South to tiny apartment in the Pacific Northwest. Not an ideal time to get into this kind of hobby, but wifey got a scent diffuser (?) in the mail and controls it from her iPhone, got me intrigued. So now that I no longer have a yard, shed, garage, or anything else that would have been cool to use this stuff with a year ago, what kind of things would y'all recommend to start with that is applicable to a small apartment? Clean way to terminate RJ45 under a porch overhang (through wall bulkhead coupler) Posted: 20 Jul 2020 08:37 PM PDT My brother is remodeling his house and has ran a CAT6 cable for a camera above his roofed porch/stoop. At this point, it might make more sense to buy one of the doorbells with built-in cameras rather than putting in a separate camera above the door. Since the cable is already ran, what is a good clean way of terminating that CAT6? Jbox is not preferable. [link] [comments]
DIY Whole Home Audio / Sonos Amp alternative ? Posted: 20 Jul 2020 10:24 PM PDT Not sure if this is the right sub reddit, so cross posting it. I recently discovered that my home was wired for Whole Home Audio (5 zones) and I now want to build a whole home audio system. In an ideal world, I would buy 5 Sonos Amps and speakers and be done with it. However, I need to start with 3 zones first and my budget is fairly low ($1000 for everything including speakers). Also, they all terminate in my family room so my wife has asked for this to be neat/presentable without having too many wires and power supplies hanging around. Since we are an all Apple family, here is what I have decided on 3x Airport Express (for Airplay2) - $40 each (used) - $120 3x TPA 3116 based Amp - $30 each - $100 - Any suggestions on the higher quality ones ? I know most people don't like Class D amps, but I bought one and it seems to be fairly good for casual listening. It also solves my immediate problem and allows me to upgrade later. It also allows me to allocate most of my budget to speakers with a chance of upgrading the amps later. Off the shelf in-ceiling speakers (Sonance or Klipsch). - $800 I am trying to figure out how can I bundle these into a rack that looks neat and can be powered with a single outlet. Here are my primary asks. Can I wire multiple 2 prong pins in to the Apple Airport in parallel to a single 3 prong grounded power switch. I also plan to use this - https://www.amazon.com/MEAN-WELL-LRS-350-24-Printer-Industrial/dp/B07VRK86SP - to power the amps. Is it possible to power this supply along with the Airport Express from a single outlet ? The peak power usage for Airport express is 25W with 2W average, So even at maximum, it would be less than 500W of total power per outlet. How do I build enclosures for the TPA 3116 amps ? I know that they have to be isolated from each other, but they will also be close to each other. The source will be via 3.5mm, so a metal case should be fine I think, however, I am not sure if excessive heat will be a problem. This is my first project of this sort and am a newbie, so suggestions, approaches, links to sites would all be super appreciated. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Relatively new to this, Just got an Alexa echo dash looking Hue lights and possible light bulbs. Posted: 20 Jul 2020 10:23 PM PDT Hi! I just recently got a wire tap and wanted to slowly automate my apartment. I do have some Kasa smart plugs I recently purchased. I'm hoping to eventually get all my lights automated. I was looking at the strip lights that work with Alexa. Would any of those be good? How's the brightness? I'd just like to make sure it won't hurt my daughters eyes. Also, I was considering purchasing Wyze light bulbs since I can control the brightness. Any suggestions on bulbs? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Cannot control Lutron devices in garage Posted: 20 Jul 2020 08:24 PM PDT I have two Lutron Caseta dimmers in a metal garage (with two plug in lamp dimmers nearby). I was able to add them to the hub by bringing to hub into the garage, but I can't control them with the hub in its usual spot in the house. They pretty much stay on all the time now. Are there any hacks or what other options do I have? I have gig ethernet and good wifi in the garage fwiw. [link] [comments]

Posted: 20 Jul 2020 07:45 PM PDT Anyone have a real life numbers on monthly data usage for the Nest doorbell and Nest Outdoor IQ camera? I have Xfinity and they have a monthly cap at 1.2TB. I use about 500GB a month. [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Jul 2020 07:35 PM PDT I'm not a Programmer or anything of the like, but, I was curious if anyone had yet thought about using the ultrasound sensing on the GoogleMinis and Nest Wifis, etc as a sort of motion detector unit that could set off lights alarms etc [link] [comments]
Confused about smart switches - need a recommendation Posted: 20 Jul 2020 06:56 PM PDT So I'm not sure what my options are. I have 2 floor lamps in my living room, one that can be controlled with a wall switch or the lamp and one that you have to turn on at the lamp. I have a smart plug that I used for Xmas lights but then started using it for one of the lamps. My issue is that when the WiFi doesn't work correctly I can't turn it on. So I was thinking of getting a smart switch for the one lamp but I don't have neutral wires. I would like to be able to control both of these lamps through Alexa and also be able to use the manually of need be. Is there an option for this? If it matters I am looking at getting a smartthings hub soon. [link] [comments]
Is there such a thing as a smart (as in smart home) UPS? Posted: 20 Jul 2020 06:56 PM PDT I am aware that there are smart plugs, outlets and power strips that allow you to toggle devices and monitor power per socket. Is there a UPS that does something similar? I have some devices connected to UPSes for which I do want to keep the battery backup and surge protection functionality. I'm aware that it's possible to monitor power consumption for an entire UPS via NUT and similar utilities and I'm using that currently but I'd like something which is a) more granular and b) doesn't necessarily require a desktop connected to it. Unfortunately "smart" apparently means something different for UPSes as well (possibly some sort of marketing slogan for a popular UPS company) and searching for wifi/network UPSes just yields UPSes for routers and the like. I've never seen them when browsing other smart products either. For price I'd say ideally < $200. I currently have one ~$60UPS and one ~$110UPS and remote toggling functionality isn't really worth an extra $100 to me. [link] [comments]

Any smart thermostats that work well with two units? Posted: 20 Jul 2020 06:22 PM PDT My house is two story and has a thermostat for the upstairs and one for downstairs. How well is this situation handled. I would appreciate if perhaps the downstairs could act as a master thermostat capable of controlling either unit while the upstairs just controlled itself. With the downstairs unit doing all the fancy learning and such and the upstairs unit being a more basic unit connected and controlled by the unit downstairs. Is this possible? I'm using hassio. If you bought a new home, what would you do differently? Posted: 20 Jul 2020 02:23 PM PDT So I just bought a new home and get to go through the whole home automation process again which is very exciting! I've learned a few things along the way. This time I'll avoid some mistakes from before:

Looking for a lock to put on backyard fence gate?? Posted: 20 Jul 2020 11:56 AM PDT Hey all! I'm looking for a lock that I can put on my backyard gate. I have a child that is a flight risk, and need something that I can be confident will keep him in the back yard! The lock needs to be locked at all times, similar to what you'd see at a business (either some sort of mechanical deadbolt or electromagnet), I need to be able to unlock it from inside AND outside the gate. Ideally, there would be some sort of RFID key fob and/or keypad to unlock it, smartphone connectivity would be a plus, but not a deal breaker! Have any of you seen anything? I did a quick search and found this. Wafu remote lock But I'll keep looking!! Thanks for any suggestions! [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Jul 2020 05:27 PM PDT Hey I hope this is the right sub for this. I have a switch like this on a lamp. https://i.imgur.com/lDZlSTO.jpg I was looking to replace it with some sort of smart switch that I could automate toggling. The problem is I can't seem to find anything to do the job. I'm comfortable with electrical/soldering work if spliced it into something. I just don't know what that's something is. Any ideas? [Edit] Not trying to just turn it on and off. Trying to toggle it between I and II on the switch. They're two different "modes" of the light [link] [comments]

Triggering events once upon arrival/leaving with isy994i Posted: 20 Jul 2020 11:54 AM PDT I had originally posted most of this as a question, but then I solved it, so I deleted that and figured I'd share my solution. Feel free to share any comments or other ideas you might have. So, what I was originally trying to do was set up my automation so that if I arrived home while the Braves were playing, it would turn on my TV and change it to the proper channel. I got all of that worked out (and I'll share that program at the bottom). The problem was that I was originally using the status of whether I was at home or not as one of the triggers. One of the things I don't like about the ISY programs is that the "If" conditions are evaluated anytime of of the values changes. So, the way my Braves program was originally written, if I was at home, the TV was off, and the braves channel was set to something higher than 0, it would turn it on and change to the proper channel. The problem with is that if I decided to go to bed and turned off the TV while the braves channel was still greater than 0, it would run the program again, since the state of my TV just changed. And, since all of the conditions were now true, it would just turn the TV back on. I didn't want to set the channel to 0 after turning it on, because then if I left and came back it wouldn't trigger the program again. I'll explain how I'm setting the channel when I show the program itself. So, what I needed was a way to determine when I'm arriving at home (an instantaneous event) instead of when I was home (a continuous state). I created 5 state variables
I'm using locative to execute a webhook that will set $inside_home_geofence to 1 when I'm inside the geofence and 0 when I'm outside the geofence. I then have four programs that will run based off that value changing Arriving Arrived Leaving Left Keeping in mind that the "If" conditions trigger the program as well as control the execution path, the following will happen when I go outside my geofence:
When I am back inside my geofence, a similar process happens with the $arriving_home and $arrived_home variables. Now we can use the $arriving_home or $leaving_home variable as conditions on other programs. They don't have to be set to 1 for a long time in order to trigger a program, they just have to change. This is where my Braves program comes into play. To start with, I have a state variable called $braves_channel. I have an IFTTT applet tied to google calendar. It will post the "Where" section of the event, which includes the channel, to a custom script I have on my webserver. That script parses out the correct channel, and then posts that to an isy webhook, which will set the $braves_channel variable to the correct channel. Since I don't have a good way of determining when a game ends at the moment, I have another program that will set it back to zero 4 hours after it has changed to something greater than 0. Braves Braves Reset So, as soon as $arriving_home changes to 1 in our Arriving program, it will run the Braves program. Provided that a channel is set and the TV is off, it'll turn on the TV and change it to the specified channel. When I turn the TV off, it's going to change the value of the current harmony hub activity, which will trigger it to evaluate all of the conditions again. If the channel is still set, and I was using $inside_home_geofence instead of $arriving_home, then everything would evaluate true again, and it would turn the TV back on. I would have no way of actually turning it off until 4 hours after the channel was set to something greater than 0. I have another program which uses the $arriving_home to turn on my hall light. I only want to turn it on during certain conditions, though, so I can't just use whether I am home or not to trigger it. There are two programs involved, even though I could combine them. I had separated them at some point before I had a better understanding of how programs work, and I actually like it better this way, so I've left it Set Dark Hall On So, with this one, the problem with using the $inside_home_geofence variable is that it would turn on the hall light anytime that I'm home and the weather changed to one of the specified conditions or $is_dark changed values. If I just wanted the light to come on anytime I arrived home, then I'd be OK using $inside_home_geofence variable, since it's not going to change, and therefore trigger the program to run, until I leave and come back. Here is a program I don't actually have implemented, but would give you an example of using $leaving_home variable in a not too contrived scenario All Off So, in this scenario, most of the time when I leave, I want everything to turn itself off. Most of the time I could just use whether I am outside the geofence to trigger that without issue. However, there are a few days where I have a housekeeper come to clean. In those instances, I'll turn the den lamp on before I leave. That will prevent everything from getting turned off. Again, this would work most of the time using the geofence value as well - until she decides to turn off the den lamp while I'm gone. If I'm using the geofence value, then it will turn everything in the house off when she turns the den lamp off. By using the $leaving_home variable instead, she can safely turn off the den lamp without it powering off every other device in the house. [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Jul 2020 03:32 PM PDT I have been using Hue lights for over 7 years and been very happy. But recently I saw this IKEA's smart light here at a IKEA showroom and was wondering why people aren't recommend it. Is it because the IKEA lights allows only 9 colours? Based on the specs, IKEA's lights are seemingly brighter (1000 lumens vs 800 lumens) compared to Hue white ambience while costing the same. (The Hue colour costs almost 3 times as much) Anyone have any experience with IKEA lights? [link] [comments]
[Q] LiftMaster 8165 MyQ, what parts? Posted: 20 Jul 2020 02:55 PM PDT Currently have a LiftMaster 8165 not the 8165W. I would like to add HomeKit functionality to it. The mode I have says MyQ, doesn't have WiFi or MyQ serial number. Searching around I get a couple conflicting information. Since it's just MyQ capable without WiFi (doesn't make sense).
Has anyone attempted this? Are the need accessories all I need or is there more? [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Jul 2020 01:36 PM PDT I'm wanting to set up my Google homes to make a sound or say something when the roomba (irobot) bin gets full; this notifying the house to clean the bin. I tried setting that up on IFTT but I couldn't seem to find how. Does anyone know a way? [link] [comments] |
