State of Nello.io support. Whenever it’s going to stop working for sure, it’s replacement will be something that is vendor independent and least HomeKit capable. Really disappointed in the company (SCALK) that bought them up. Avoid their products! Is anyone else experiencing this?

Need a device that can detect a (my) door being opened, and send a notification to my Desktop PC as I use it.

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 04:58 PM PDT

hi there, i'm planning a big room redecoration and plan to move my desktop setup around a corner behind the door, which i will be entirely out of sight of, covered by a hanging rail curtain. the people i live with are very prone to knocking and then entering anyway and it scares the everloving shit out of me when they tap me on the back and i had no idea they were there.

does such a device exist that i can hook up to the door, have it connect to my desktop PC via bluetooth and just send me a "door has been opened" notification? apologies if this is the wrong subreddit to ask but it genuinely seemed the most appropriate

Automating the small details : turning off my computer monitors when I go to bed

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 09:28 AM PDT

I'm quite happy with my current home automation setup, but one thing that felt incomplete was when triggering my "I'm going to bed" routine (trough GH) my nightstand lamp turns on and all other lights turn off. But my computer monitors stayed on (until the screen saver kicks in), and since I usually go from the PC to bed, this means the kitchen stays illuminated for a while.

Turns out it was much easier to automate than I thought ! I created a virtual switch in SmartThings, created a Node Red flow to react to it going "off" and post to MQTT. On the PC there's a python script that monitors that topic and calls Nircmd to turn off the monitors and locks the PC.

It's a small detail, but it feels really neat !

ATX computer power supply for whole house motorized shades?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 10:29 PM PDT

Looking at the specs for the ~$1k 20-motor Somfy DC power supply. Found the same brand (Mean Well) DC power supply (without Somfy's proprietary automation and power distribution of course) for 1/10 the price online and figured I'd go with that instead. But then I realized I have an old ATX computer power supply I'm not using that puts out 21 amps on the 12v rail, which is the same amp rating as the Somfy, albeit half the power due to 12v instead of 24v. I'd have to switch to 12v motors instead of 24v, but that's no big deal.

I can't think of any reason I can't hook a physical switch up to the motherboard connector to turn the power supply on/off manually, and then distribute the 12V rail out through the house using 16/2 wire, and properly fused DC distribution blocks ($28 on Amazon)? It's a UL listed DC power supply so I don't think there'd be any insurance concerns. In my automation setup, I would ensure that too many motors would never be turned on at once. Maybe a limit to 5 2-amp motors max, never putting the power supply above 50% usage.

I'm going to be using the Qubino Zwave DC shutter units to automate all shades (~33 mA @ 12v). Maybe I'll even automate the power on/off of the ATX power supply with a Zwave dry contact relay (Remotec) and a physical dumb switch tied to it as well!

Any thoughts on how this could be a bad idea?

Edit: Additional thought, you can wire two ATX power supplies (which I have) in series to get 24V, which I might consider since some of the 16/2 runs are long enough to be near limits at 12V and 2A.

    RaspCon 2 vs C2531

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 11:43 PM PDT

I've been planning out my smart home for a little while and want to make my own zigbee hub. I'm planning on using IKEA bulbs and Aqara sensors. I've found the Deconz and zigbee2mqtt libraries and related hardware as the two most likely platforms.

I use HomeKit with homebridge currently so that is what I would like to integrate these zigbee devices into. What are the pros and cons of each of these choices? They both seem relatively the same in function so asking for more of personal experience using either of these.

HomeSeer 3 -> upgrade to HS4 or switch?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 11:17 PM PDT

After like 6 or 7 years on HS3 we've decided it's time to gut and redo all our HA kit. Some of our Z-Wave sensors are no longer installed, some aren't working, and generally I don't feel like I've done much on it over the past 2 years as HS3 is really a pain to set up and work with.

This leads me to a few questions that I'd love everyone's thoughts on:

    1. Is switching from HS3 to HS4 worthwhile?
    2. Should we dump HS off a cliff and look going Crestron? I know I'll lose "administrative" abilities, but the right installer can give me a higher level of access if I plead with them.
    3. Can HS4 and/or Crestron figure out who has entered a room based on a combination of PIR and their phone switching to a particular access point (or using Beacons or something else triggered by BLE on phones)?
    4. Are there any good alternatives to Hue's very consumer-level bulbs / LED strips?
    5. Are there any hard-wired sensors that present a good alternative to the Aeotec MultiSensor 6 Z-Wave sensors we currently run?

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

    Futureproof doorbell

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 01:06 PM PDT

Looking fro advice on how to future-proof my doorbell wiring. I currently have where the current wires run into the basement exposed but plan to finish the basement in the near future. Not quite ready to install a video doorbell but want to someday in the more distant future. Should I runt some cat 6 and low voltage to my central hub for now? Something else? Ultimately I like to have a doorbell that does't require wifi, batteries, and doesn't have data storage in the exterior part of the doorbell (as I believe some of the current door bells do).

Here are a couple pics of the exterior part

I'm trying to find a way that when it fills up and stops running to be alerted so I can empty the water from the bucket. I haven't found anything yet that can do that. Is there anything you all know of?

So if like to create my own sense type sensor to know which appliances are on or off. Please help

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:09 PM PDT

Sense uses some kind of algorithm but I plan to make it more simple. I have one sensor that measures my whole house power. I will than, let's say measure how much electricity my fridge uses when it turns on and create an automation that says if the power rises by approximately this number it should register that my fridge is on. If this works I will than continue with other appliances. Anyone have any idea what the exact formula I would use for "approximately" I'm using home assistant and node red.

    Whole house fan automation

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 01:47 PM PDT

My family is planning on buying a whole house fan - I'm wondering if there is a way to get it working with IFTTT.

I've read of using "smart relays," but from what I've read it disables any remote included with the fan, which is not an option in my house.

Is there a solution that doesn't disable the remote and also allows IFTTT integration?

    Or maybe even Google Assistant?

Infrared Fan how would you control?

So I have a ceiling fan that is controlled by an infrared remote and live in the UK.

My goal would be to have the fan come on when the inside or outside temperature reaches a certain level. I would love to close my eyelet curtains/Roman blinds.

I've got a PC running as a server and am happy to buy into a platform but it must work reliably and have an app, etc..
