How I automated my vertical slat blinds with Home Assistant

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 03:35 PM PDT

    HomeAutomation virgin here. Some questions

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 08:45 PM PDT

I am very new to smart home system. I have zero such gadgets. The only thing I'm trying to do at the moment is to add an addressable LED strip at the edge of the PC desk. I purchased Philips Hue strip and I realized it's not really addressable LED strip and it can only output one color at a time. My fault for not researching thoroughly. Anyway, I've been looking for some other alternatives such as TP-Link KL430 and LIFX Z LED, and while I kept researching, one thing led to another.

If the LED strip is the only thing I'll ever add, then I know I can just grab whatever that looks alright. But most likely, this LED strip is just the beginning, and I'll end up adding more and more. And I want to soft future-proof my setup so that I don't waste too much money in the future, realizing some compatibility issues.

Currently, I'm wondering about what connectivity I should be using. There are bluetooth, WiFi, Zigbee, Z-wave, and probably more. Do these matter? In order to control all smart devices in one app, do they all have to be under the same system? What about telling Alexa to do stuffs? Do they also all need to be under the same system? Those were few things that I couldn't get clear answers from Googling. My current setups are:

5Ghz WiFi (can be configured to 2.4 but not at the same time. I really prefer to use 5Ghz for my main gadgets such as macbook bc I have connection issue with 2.4 as I live in a crowded apartment. I'm willing to buy another router that can do both 2.4 and 5 simultaneously, if it's worth it)

No Echo or Hub (gotta get one)

    Android (S10)

Small apartment with one bedroom (about 1000 sq ft. maybe less)

    Any inputs will be appreciated.

Hue can't process too many inputs at once which is problematic when dimming in fine increments with a button. Do specialized dimmers (like knobs) have this issue as well?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 12:25 AM PDT

    Hi,

Hue can't process too many inputs at once which is problematic when doing very fine dimming with a button.

if you try to set up a button to reduce a Hue bulb's brightness by a really small amount (let's say 5%) you'll notice that when you press the button quickly multiple times in a row, Hue will only register around 2 presses per second.

You would not have this issue if you dragged your finger over a brightness slider, eg the one inside the hue app to control the bulb. (While there is a bit of delay between setting the brightness and the bulb reaching it, it still feels more dynamic and precise settings are possible, almost like with traditional electrical dimmer knobs) But using the app is impractical. I need something physical. I wonder if the Lutron Aurora Dimmer feels like that for small increments? I mean that one's also a "friend of Hue" so they might be optimized better. (wonder about other dimmers as well and hope there are cheaper options actually)

(Note that I'm referring to Hue bulbs I bought 2019 before the new bulbs were released that have bluetooth functionality to control them without the hub. Don't know if they changed anything with those.)

Why isn't home automation more popular?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 06:27 PM PDT

I don't know many people who have smart devices in there with the exception of a smart speaker like alexa or google home. Why do you think smarthome and home automation isn't more common and mainstream?

Where can I find a Haiku Fan light kit for a 2015 fan?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 07:02 AM PDT

Hi guys, I have a 60" indoor Haiku composite (2015) fan that was apparently discontinued, and so now I can't find a light kit replacement for it and the light has stopped working. Apparently they stopped making those fans in 2016 and the newer light kits won't fit it. So now I'm out my main ceiling light which really sucks! Figured this is a long shot, but does anyone have any leads on places that might still have these in stock? Or any ideas on how i can hack a light for it?

    Lutron vs Kasa Smart Switches?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 07:40 PM PDT

I'm looking between the Kasa and Lutron light switches. I will be building a house this year and want to I'm install some start switches in the kitchen, bedroom, mancave, etc. I've found Lutron and Kasa but want to know which I should choose and why.

Kasa is cheaper and does not require a hub, but what if my router gives out? Do my switches also stop working?

It seems Lutron uses a hub which seems as if this would eliminate that issue.

Or am I wrong and the Kasa work during an outage as well? What is the benefit of both besides cost of Kasa?

Or would you all just recommend biting the cost and buying all smart bulbs since the cost is decreasing. I currently have 3 Wyze bulbs in my apartment and love them.

    Thank you all in advance.

    Sensors need (poll)

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 01:42 AM PDT

Wondering what do you guys are looking for when you think about a smart sensor device for your home automation needs.
I created this poll thinking of one device that can incorporate not just Temperature and Humidity sensors, but:
    - Air Quality,
    - Air Pressure,
    - Motion,
    - Accelerometer,
    - Proximity Sensor,
    - Depth,
    - Thermal Image Sensing,
    - A relay switch for triggers,
    - or a combination of the above.

A device that you can place it anywhere in the house like the basement or some other long-distance to monitor and to get alerts on your phone or to trigger events based on conditions.

Edit - if you choose "Other" - can you elaborate on that in the comments?

    Thanks.

What's the best smart button for Google Home?

    Schlage Sense Firmware Update error

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 04:53 PM PDT

I have a Schlage Sense lock running firmware 4.27.0. The Schlage app shows there is an update. I have attempted many times to try to install the update but I get an "Update Failed" every time. I have my phone right next to the lock. I've removed the batteries and put them back in hoping a "reset" would do it. No luck. Anyone else having trouble installing the 4.31.0 firmware update? Any suggestions to get it to install?

Monitoring PSI gauges (tanks of propane, water, etc.)?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 04:50 AM PDT

I would like to build an Arduino device which can accurately report the values of my (1) propane and (2) water tanks. Both have pressure gauges (PSI) - see pics. I am not certain I can actually replace the gauge itself in the case of the propane tank, as it is used by the company which fills the tank. Rather, I would like to find a simple and reliable way to attach a sensor to these gauges.

I've read a little about radiometric hall sensors (like the UGN3503) indicating that some people have used them to digitize a gauge. I'm curious if this is the best path, or if there is another easy way to get a nice accurate reading of the levels.

Anyone heard anything on the new Hunter Douglas PowerView Rechargeable System option?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 07:05 AM PDT

    Hello,

I was looking into motorized shades and found out HD just released a new rechargeable system. Anyone heard anything on it or installed it? I hear it's the same as their normal battery system, it comes with a wand you have to charge it once a year, 14.4V and their is a 5 year warranty on it.

Does this battery solution require a separate connection

    port to the motor?

A: No, this battery will use the same plug-in power cord as the

existing alkaline battery wand. Very convenient!

Will I have to remove my window treatment in order to

    recharge my batteries?

A: No! With the convenient design of the rechargeable battery

wand, simply remove the battery from its mount, leaving the

window treatment AND the mount installed. Additionally,

the Single Charger's 16-foot cable provides the option to run

the cable up to the shade and recharge the battery while it

    remains inserted into the mount.

What is the size of the wand? Will it impact the mounting

    depth of my product?

A: The rechargeable battery wand kit (wand + mount) is 13" long,

1¼" tall, and 1" deep. For mounting depth requirements, please

refer to your product's specifications in the Reference Guide.

Q: How long will it take to fully recharge the battery after use?

A: The Dual Charging Station charges two battery wands

simultaneously from a fully depleted state to a full charge in

approximately three hours. The Single Charger charges one

battery wand from a fully depleted state to a full charge in

    approximately two hours.

    Thank you

    Apartment Help

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 02:11 PM PDT

I'm interested in starting automation in my apartment, 3. main questions for all you people 1. Do you think this is possible with out draining my apartments WiFi and being a jerk? 2. If I am predominantly an IOS user, would it be best for me to go with HomeKit, and even a HomePod, given I have less of a space to cover, and don't really need multiple speakers 3. What devices would y'all recommend as a start, knowing that it is an apartment, not a house. Thanks!

Can you tell Broadlink IR transmitter to transmit IR signal upon command via IFTTT?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 05:40 AM PDT

    Hello!

I wanted to check if the following was possible, and how you go about doing it, before I went out and bought the hardware needed to do what I'm hoping to do.

I'm going to get FLIRC which is a USB IR receiver, I'll have it learn the signal from a button on my regular TV remote so when it 'hears' that signal it will trigger a script on my Mac. (the buttons on the regular TV remote currently don't do anything, so there won't be a clash)

I'm also going to get a Broadlink RM4 Mini, and have it 'learn' the IR signal of a HDMI switcher box I've got which lets me plug in 4 HDMI sources into one box which has 1 output to the TV. The switcher box can be operated with a normal IR remote that just has 4 buttons, one for each input, so on the Broadlink I can just have it 'learn' these signals as I don't think it'll be in their existing database.

I was hoping that I could write a simple script that is run when FLIRC receives the signal, and the script would have IFTTT tell the Broadlink to transmit an IR signal to a HDMI switcher box. This would ultimately allow me to change HDMI input by using a button on a regular tv remote.

I've read a little about IFTTT web hooks, which as far as I know means you can visit a specific url to trigger IFTTT actions. I've also read that Broadlink supports IFTTT. Does anyone know if Broadlink will let you use IFTTT to trigger actions of devices you've 'taught' it that aren't in their database? Is it relatively easy to do?
