What old (i.e. cheap) tablet would you recommend for a wall-mounted home dashboard?

I have a Nexus 10, which is good as it's very thin and has a big, 10", high DPI display. I was going to buy a few more as they're about £20-30 on eBay, but wondered if anyone had any other recommendations? Android preferable over Apple as it can run Kiosk.

    Hub help

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 03:29 PM PDT

I've gotten by without a hub as everything I own connects to my wifi router until now. I just purchased some Bali blinds which run on Zwave and I'm going to need a hub to run home automation for it. Everything on the internet says Samsung smarting's hub but everything recently says its extinct (not to mention nearly impossible to find) so i'm at a bit of a loss. I don't have a ton of things to connect and I'm not the most tech literate to be programing a virtual computer whatever the hell that means... I really just want to be able to tell google to close the blinds and have them open automatically in the morning. is that so hard? any easy ideas?

How to add more wifi devices to the same network?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 06:02 PM PDT

I've got a lot of things on my 2.4GHz network. It's not slow. I just can't add any more because my router is a Netgear and is limited to 32 connections. And now I'm stuck. If this was wired, I'd use a switch. Is there something I can use to connect more devices to the same network? Googling just tells me how to make my signal stronger.

    Ethernet or Zwave light switches

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 06:39 PM PDT

Any device recommendations for a switch that uses either PoE rather than mains power to operate? The guy from SuperHouseTV (https://youtu.be/YQCaBXJ9sSM) does similar, from scratch, kind of switches which is what I am looking to emulate.

Something like this ubiquity UDIM-AT dimmer switch (bonus for it being a dimmer) but not outrageously priced. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1431157-REG/ubiquiti_networks_udim_at_unifi_dimmer_switch.html/?msclkid=4ab203b3a06e1370ce0163dd23e96bba

I could also see a battery powered Zwave iteration being an option as well.

Should there be a limited voice assistant specifically for home automation?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 04:57 PM PDT

Lately I've been seeing a lot more posts mentioning how Alexa/Google devices often mishear home automation commands and respond with something completely unrelated, which is really frustrating if you're trying to just change the scene or turn off the lights.

Me and some of my friends have machine learning and electrical engineering backgrounds from grad school, and have recently been prototyping our own voice assistant with custom wake words and offline voice processing - specifically focusing on customizability for home automation.

It's hard to get the speech models to perform well without controlling the hardware, so we've been prototyping it on our own PCBs and 3D printed cases. We think that by focusing on just home automation style commands, the speech processing can make fewer mistakes than what more general purpose assistants currently offer. The trade-off is you wouldn't be able to do general purpose internet searches or get audiobooks read to you, but it should be more reliable for controlling smart devices.

We're working on building in hooks to Home Assistant so we can start using it more easily for our existing automations, but we were wondering - are we just scratching our own itch here or would other people find this interesting? What other features would be helpful for home automation specifically?

Motion sensor for Govee wifi light strips

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 08:56 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm looking to have my wifi lightstrips go off on a motion sense. The problem is almost every sensor seems to require a hub. Has anyone achieved this without using a hub? I'm also not opposed to buying a Raspberry Pi and install a PIR with it and someone u se IFTTT with it, but looking for easier solutions first.

    Thanks

Software to make PC into smart home hub.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 11:46 AM PDT

I have a plex server in my basement that acts also as a storage server, and soon blue iris server as well.

I'd like to move into the home automation world, but am overwhelmed.

Is there software I can run on my server, and antennas I can attach to the server? I've seen some cool USB extenders.

I know I can get a homeseer or a hubitat for pretty close to each other, but my server is pretty powerful and would be "future proof"

Currently the server is running windows 10 but will be switching to Linux (something for newbs) soon. I am privacy focused and want everything to run local. When it's time to move to voice commands, I'll be using something privacy focused as well.

    Can anyone help?

Battery Powered Zigbee Temperature Grill Probe?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 03:45 PM PDT

Is anyone aware of someone who makes a battery-powered grill temperature probe that runs on the Zigbee protocol? I use a Smobot on my smoker but I also use the smoker as a charcoal grill and I would like something that would allow me to measure the grill temperature that's more permanent as the Smobot setup, while very nice, is way too many wires and connections just to grill out burgers.

1600 lumen color changing zwave or zigbee bulb

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 09:31 AM PDT

As in title: could someone please recommend minimum 1600lumen light bulb that can change color temperature? standard E26 base.

It should be zwave or zigbee, not wifi (thanks to this sub, I learned the difference and my needs!).

I'm finding only bulbs that fit two of those specs, not all three.

I need it to be that bright to build an office / sitting room: bright cool white bulbs during the day, warm dimmer light for evening.

    Thank you!

How long do smart switches generally last?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 05:03 PM PDT

I entered the wonderful world of home automation about 3 years ago. And just today one of my Leviton smart switches had an electrical issue (where power was coming into the switch from the breaker panel, but no longer flowing out of it). I have about 15 switches or so, is that about the time period where they start to fail?

    Power ISY994i via POE?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 01:06 PM PDT

I'd like to clean up my wiring a bit and free up some power ports. I've found numerous POE to 12v adapters online. Has anyone used one to power an ISY994i? Any recommendations on one such adapter, or ones to avoid?

    Any smart usb power strips?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 07:28 PM PDT

I know there are lots of smart extension sockets that have both 13a and usb sockets combined, but I am looking for a usb only smart power strip, with 5 or more usb outlets that can be independently controlled. This is more convenient than getting 5 separate WiFi usb switches to add to a regular dumb usb strip. Do these exist?

    Anybody heard of Loxone?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 07:28 PM PDT

Out in the wild today I was at a very high-end house that had Loxone touchpads and motion sensors. I like to think I'm "in the know" when it comes to lighting automation systems from Lutron being the king to discontinued products like LiteTouch, to Vantage (which was great before Legrand bought them and drove them to the ground), to all the other AV systems that also do lighting now like Crestron, Control 4, ELAN, SAVANT, etc. but I had never heard of Loxone.

It was the most unintuitive touchpad I have ever seen - no labels, no display, no intuitive way to know where to touch and it was purely luck that I started touching it randomly and was able to turn on the lights in the room. I did a little search on my phone and it turned out there were exactly 2 dealers in the area for a very very large area so it made little sense to me why someone would pick them over the major brands listed above unless the price difference and/or features was that superior. Even then, sooner or later they'd need repairs, service, or programming and it's hard enough being married to a dealer of a major brand, much less a very little known product with very few dealers.

What am I missing here? What can Loxone do that others can't do?

Stay with savant or scrap it

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 03:47 PM PDT

I recently bought a house in which 90% of the light switches are savant brand light switches. However the prior owner of the home took all of the equipment that would control these switches and thermostats. All savant brand. Is there any other options other than buying a savant host in order to control them or do I just change out all the light switches to something else that is controllable and more universal? My previous home I just use Google home for everything it was very simple to add / replace light switches control whatever I wanted to in the house. Please help me not sure what to do

    Thoughts on Home Assistant

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 07:51 AM PDT

Right now I have V1 Samsung Smartthings and controlling lights and doors via Z-wave. I'm no noob to the raspberry pi and I'm considering getting a PI 4 just for smart home automation and using the RaZberry Gen 2 Z-Wave+ GPIO Daughter Card - ZMEURAZ2. My question is, is it worth the hassle and should I replace my Smartthings with this setup? I know Home assistant has way more features than Smartthings.

Need help automating myQ garage with Google home

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 09:40 AM PDT

I have a myQ garage door opener and a Pixel 5. I would like to find a way to get my garage door opener to show up in the Google home app so that I can use the home controls (quick setting when you long press power) to open and close my garage door.

I can open and close the garage door through the myQ and Key apps just fine. It also works with Alexa and Google assistant, but I don't want to use voice control.

Ideas that I haven't been able to figure out include webhooks, ifttt or tasker.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Smart Blinds - Lutron Serena vs Zebra Blinds

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 11:47 AM PDT

Looking at smart roller shades for 11 windows in my living room, Lutron comes out to $6,900. Zebra Blinds with the Z-Wave Graber rollers comes out to $4,100 with a 20% off sale going on right now (is this one of those sites where there's always a sale?). I know Lutron is considered the top end, I already have a Lutron hub and other switches so I know the system, but is the price difference worth it?
