Smart fans with Lutron switches (single switch)?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 07:54 PM PDT

I'm looking to get smart fans in a bunch of rooms. Most of the rooms in question have Lutron switches installed. Can I purchase a smart fan of some kind (basically a smart remote system, either preinstalled in the fan or a Bond or something) and still use my Lutron switches? Will they still be able to dim the lights if there's a fan and light on the same switch?

I know Lutron makes a fan controller switch, but I'd have to run new wire all over the house, which I'm not really wanting to do...

    Internet of Plants

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 09:13 PM PDT

So I want to monitor soil temperature, moisture, on about 12 plants. Maybe soil PH on 1 or 2 plants. I would like to also put a weather station in the vicinity of the garden. The garden in question is on my patio. I have HOA rules that would prevent me from running too many wires. I could likely get away with a couple small gauge wires.

I am OpenHAB as my controller. I currently have the following protocols running wireless Zigbee, Zwave, Wifi, and 433Mhz (sonoff bridge). I was thinking of adding LoRaWAN for the hell of it, but honestly that is only to say I did it. So if something else works I am open to it.

The question is what robust, and somewhat water proof sensors exist that would allow me to monitor these parameters, and hopefully dump their data to MQTT directly or indirectly through a bridge?

Home automation for a new house

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 02:09 PM PDT

    Hello guys,

I got recently back into automation and roamed here to find advise for my future big Projekt.

I've got in contact with a contractor to build a house from scratch (sockets and cat cables fully planable, inside and outside)

So I'm sitting here thinking about a smart home planning.

The contractor works with Somfy and I will get the TaHoma and controllable roller shutter included. But what about the rest? Which stuff would you pre plan and "hide" instead of install after? Which base would you chose ? So far I have ideas for the following stuff / systems

    Voice control - Alexa

    Roller shutter - somfy (fix)

    Lights - Phillips hue

    Smart door lock - tbd

Sensors (movement, light, sound?) - tbd

Camera, no cloud Lokal backup on nas - symbology compatible cameras?

    Lawn mowing - husquana

    Lawn watering - Gardena

    Heating - somfy (fix)

    Music - Sonos

Anyone got ideas what I am missing and what my tbd choices should be ? Since the last time I automated stuff (rasperypi with antenna) the marked is just flooded with stuff

At the moment I don't know which base i should use to bring al the different systems together. So far I read about:

IFTTT (monthly payment) Alexa (would be the easiest for me but is it complex enough?) Homey (looks like the Silicon Valley designed stuff)

In choosing the parts I am preferring:

    Security/noCloud > functionality > design > price

I know this is a lot of questions and maybe some of you can enlighten me ❤️

Lots of love and stay save

Way to sync RGB lights/Strips to the color scheme of the music's album cover?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 07:25 PM PDT

Right, so i had this idea in the shower, where you could sync the lights of RGB strips and other RGB enabled devices to the color of whatever the album art is for your music app. Preferably Spotify. Whether this is done by a separate app that grabs the information from Spotify or PC software.

Example: Rewind - Louis Fulton (RGB lights set to: Blue, Dark blue, White)

Tequila Shots - Kid Cudi (Blue, purple, orange, etc)

Intentions - Justin Bieber (Red, White)

Into The Sunset - Mako (RAINBOW!)

    Is Hubitat worth it?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 02:04 PM PDT

Hubitats are on sale today for $115. I am new to the home automation world. Just got a lock, have had Philips Hue lights for a few years, going to buy a robot vacuum, and so on.

If I get one, do I keep the Hue hub?

I know I want zwave stuff, but is hubitat my best move?

Are Sylvania Smart+ WiFi A19 bulbs controllable with JUST a smartphone (no home internet)?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 05:47 PM PDT

Because if not, I have made a mistake.

Long story short, I have only phone internet, but I haven't had any problems finding workarounds for just about everything.

Yet these bulbs might be a problem for this setup.

They're turned on and blinking light a disco party as I try to find the right app settings to work with just the phone. But the app's adamant about connecting the bulbs to a separate network. I can't get it to work with Hotspot, hotspot+WiFi, or WiFiDirect.

Can these bulbs only work with a separate home network bridging the app and the bulbs?

PoE powered light switch. Does a thing exist?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 09:53 AM PDT

I found one through Ubiquity, but curious if anyone knows of any others?

I am looking for a light switch that would be either powered or alt powered using PoE. If PoE powered and zigbee that is still an option I'd entertain.

    Thanks!

    Z-Wave Include/Exclude Tool

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 04:51 PM PDT

    Z-Wave Include/Exclude Tool

I couldn't get a Z-Wave switch installed in a [plastic] electrical box to pair with my hub - not even pulled out of the box, dangling on the wires - so I made this sophisticated tool so I could plug the switch into a receptacle close to the hub - where it was instantly recognized. And having been included in the network and returned to its permanent (enclosed, grounded, safe) home, it works perfectly:

Any guesses as to why it wouldn't pair? Also in the box are a Leviton VRCZ4 and also a combo GCFI/switch on another circuit.

    External wireless button

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 04:22 PM PDT

I've recent got a new place. In this place most of the electrical boxes for switches are really tight (place built 40 years ago). I can't replace the boxes in some places since the walls are also too thin. So basically I can't put a smart switch in any of those walls.

What I wanted to do is to use a wireless relay (like the sonoff basic r2) and a wireless switch.

However I can't find any good external switches (be it zigbee / zwave / WiFi) Any recommendations?

need help understanding if/where this technology exists

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 04:12 PM PDT

Currently my smart switches are wired so they receive power and route it to their loads. However, it seems like that would be inefficient and harder to evolve compared to having each switch have a (low power) connection to a smart home hub / bridge, and the bridge controls which other loads (downstream of the bridge) receive power. Essentially since the bridge should be the source of truth, switches should just be one among many inputs indicating the desired system state.

I'm having a hard time searching for products like this. Does it make sense at all and does it exist as a consumer technology? Thanks in advance.

Trying to figure out what hub/smart switches I really want.

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 03:58 PM PDT

I'm pretty sure I want to go with either Hubitat, Home Assistant, or Smarthings from what I've seen (right?). Currently I have a few Wyze Bulbs and a Wyze thermostat. I tried looking at their compatibility with those hubs and it seems like Wyze isn't super friendly on the compatibility end? Or does my integration of those items into Google Home allow the hubs to see and manipulate those devices?

Lastly, I'm looking at smart switches and my home has a few 2 and 3 switch plates. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right place but all I was finding was single switch smart switch setups.

I want to connect multpile bluetooth speaker at once like 10 of them. Is it possible?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 12:03 PM PDT

I am planning to do it at outdoor. How can I do that? If I can do that how can I do this in most affordable way? I imagine that I control all of them from main controller which I control and they are all synchronized.

Outlet energy monitoring with downloadable data

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 08:27 AM PDT

I am looking to monitor my electricity usage on a single outlet and be able to download the data to my laptop so I can plug it in to a spreadsheet. I've looked at devices such as Etekcity ESW15 WiFi Energy Monitoring Smart Plug or the Kasa equivalent, but these appear to just show a chart on a phone. I'd like access to the actual data. Does this exist? Seems like a no brainer to make the data exportable and I'm scratching my head wondering why these apps only want to show you the data and not give you access to the data.

Should be UL listed (or equivalent) and if it needs a cell phone, I use an iPhone.

    Ring doorbell and cameras

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 12:01 PM PDT

So I am in the process of closing on my first home (well house, we owned a condo prior). I am looking at buying Ring doorbell cameras, I am torn between the ring doorbell three or ponying up for the pros. We have a front door and side door that enters to the kitchen which I am assuming we will use more to come and go.

I looked into other doorbells or ones that would tie into A NVR system to which I could not find.

My question or actually questions. Which ring doorbell to purchase? I know there are better options like Arlo but my wife loves the community option for Ring and I don't disagree, especially considering from what I see a lot of people go with ring so they would have a great network which wouldn't be offered with another manufacturer. Now at that point going with ring I kind of feel I might as well grab their cameras and have it all tied into one system as opposed with going with an NVR type camera system and then having different apps or places where our security footage is being stored.

Curious on this subreddits thoughts or experiences on this matter. Thanks in advance!
