Zooz 4-way dimmer switch - can't figure out wiring

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 09:41 PM PDT

I'm trying to figure out how to wire a 4-way switch. Should have paid attention in EE class but here we are. Any help in figuring this out?

Background: It's a hallway light which has three switches, one in the hallway, one in the kitchen and another in the garage.

    Zooz instruction: https://www.support.getzooz.com/kb/article/211-4-way-diagrams-for-zen26-and-zen27-switches/

    Current 4-way wiring: https://i.imgur.com/gHFt6Nn.png

I'm guessing it's Option 1 but what's throwing me off is that both switches have power when turned off.

    Any help would be great.

Organizing Alexa Routines is a Nightmare

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 11:47 PM PDT

Anyone have any cool techniques to organizing Alexa routines? I've got like 15 or so, but they're stored as a giant list in the Alexa app on my phone. I'm guessing there are no folders (yet), but how does everyone else organize their Alexa routines?

Yolink Door Sensor sends alarm to Google Home Mini

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 07:28 PM PDT

I recently set up my doors with Yolink door sensors, and wondering short of buying the yolink alarm, is there anyway to trigger the sensors (possibly through ifttt) to play some sort of audible alarm on my google home mini? I currently don't have an alexa-enable speaker, but I know that Yolink does have a skill through Alexa, so that could be my backup I suppose. Any thoughts appreciated TIA.

Yale Assure SL question (perhaps a dumb question)

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 04:27 PM PDT

This may be obvious to others, but clearly not to me :)

I purchased a few Z-Wave Yale Assure SL deadbolts and I can't get them to connect to the Yale Secure app. I've tried a bunch of times, and then I had the thought that maybe because I have the z-wave module, they won't work with the app, but rather with my z-wave setup.

Unfortunately, I haven't setup a z-wave hub as we just moved in and it'll be a few weeks before I can. Is this an accurate assumption? Will the app not work with the z-wave version of the lock?

What is the most reliable yet not the most expensive way to replace all these (I have a few of each one) to Wi-Fi switches that could be automated with home assistant?

    Control Panel Options

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 10:10 AM PDT

I'm trying to find a tidy solution to give me a control panel for controlling my audio zones. I have Alexa's connected to 2 audio receivers for playing music in 3 zones. Living room and deck run from receiver #1 (using the zone 2 output) and a bathroom is connected to received #2. For the living room sometimes we play music in both the living room and on the deck. I have no problem setting the receiver in the right mode but my wife and kids can't figure out my magic. So what I want is a panel to easily push a button that will trigger a routine through yonomi or alexa etc etc. What's the best option out there? Wifi buttons, tablet with customized screen, hardwired button to a controller etc?

Recommendations on security camera for my need

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 09:14 PM PDT

    These are my requirements:

    1) Either continuous local recording with cloud uploading only when motion detected OR cloud recording only when motion is detected (this is because there's a certain GB limit on download/upload where the camera is being used)

    2) I wanna receive notifications and recordings via the internet. I don't need the recordings to be saved in cloud for later use. Thus, I don't wanna play for cloud.

    Thanks

Confused about wiring a 3-Way with GE Enbrighten

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 05:21 PM PDT

I have neutrals in my home, I have the GE motion sensor and add-on. I took off one switch and only have 3 wires, red, black and white, all connected to the switch. Then in the other switch I have 4 black connected and 1 red, plus 4 neutrals bundled in the back.

    https://imgur.com/a/WNOew6e

I've searched and found some similar wiring but nothing quite like this.

I can tell you that on the switch with only 3 wires, the red is hot (always has power) and both black and red only have power when the light is on. For the other switch all 3 black seem be to be hot and the red load. Does this make any sense? Can I wire these switches?

    Thanks

Edit: Actually, depending on how I switch the switches the one with only 3 wires doesn't seem to have a hot/line. Can this be right? If that switch is up while the other is down (lights off) the white is only showing power. If they switch is down while the other is up (lights still off) only the red has power.

    Are there any motorized miniblinds?

I've been trying to find motorized/remote controllable 1" slat-style miniblinds. They don't seem to exist or maybe I'm missing something? From what I can tell all the motorized blinds are cellular style.

    Automate On/Off multiple times

I have a pool light system that lets you choose different colors, but you have to turn it on/off multiple times to get the desired color/theme. So if I wanted a solid blue I'd have to power cycle the light switch 8x's. Is there any way to automate this? My friend and I reached out to shelly support and they stated their units will not properly work with this kind of light. Any other suggestions?

    Rental Ideas

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 08:44 AM PDT

To all the renters in this community, what have you done to make your apartment/townhome/condo smart/connected/automated?

I dove into home automation over the last year and built a system centered on Home Assistant but I've been renting the whole time and probably will be for the next few years. I have temp/humidity sensors, Ikea Tradfri bulbs, some Tuya compatible outlet switches, and just got a Wyze Cam V3.

Most of the posts I see are catered toward homeowners so I wanted to see what kinds of things renters are doing and what kinds of "smart" capacity I can add to scratch the itch until I can own a home one day.

    Bathroom Light Pull cord solution

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 06:29 AM PDT

Hi, I have bathroom lights which have a pull cord, but not sure what's the best way to make it smarter.

I was thinking of installing downlights that turn on with a motion sensor, but don't want to go down the route of buying individual smart gu10 bulbs, as it can be quite expensive. As it's not a regular switch, I would think a device likely shelly won't be viable.

I have a zigbee setup at home, so I'd prefer to use that tech instead of z-wave or anything other, if possible.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

    Automating a fake doorbell circuit

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 06:27 AM PDT

So, I apologize if this has already been answered somewhere, but I can't find anything and it seems to me there must be an answer.

Where we live on the 2nd floor, we have a "buzzer" to let people in. It's a doorbell button. When we push the doorbell in our flat (completing the circuit), the door lock at the bottom of the stairwell buzzes and is unlocked.

I'd like to be able to make this process smart. The doorbell button in our flat always has its light on, except for when we push the button, like any standard doorbell. My thinking is, would it be possible to replace the doorbell with a wifi or ZigBee relay switch? The fact that the doorbell light is always on indicates to me that it is getting some power even if the circuit isn't complete. So are there some relays that would be able to use that to power themselves and then complete the circuit (unlocking the door) when triggered by an app?

    New Homeowner Security Advice

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 09:04 AM PDT

Hi all, new (and first-time) homeowner here. I would really appreciate your advice. Security is at the top of my mind, so I'm shopping for security system ideas. I need and want door and window sensors, cameras, a video doorbell, and a siren, so if something happens at night, I'm alerted and hear it (and so does everyone else).

I also admit, lurking on here, I'm a bit spooked on privacy. I don't want hackers, the Chinese government, or anyone unauthorized to invade my home's privacy. So I've thought more about local storage than I ever have before. On the other hand, I can see some benefits to cloud storage, namely if it ensures a backup of footage that can help identify someone or be used for proof for the insurance company.

I want to do self-monitoring via my and my partner's phone. It would be nice if the system also had some type of battery backup in case of power outage.

So, what suggestions do you all have? I'm pretty open and am not locked into an ecosystem. I'm used to having "smart things" that just work over wifi, like Nest cameras, Google Home, WeMo switches. Also, if it helps to know on the privacy front, I'm not a networking whiz and am looking for something straightforward.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

    Second Attempt...

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 08:42 AM PDT

I got excited about home automatic... bought a couple Echos... and a bunch of Wifi light switches and plugs..... and promptly overwhelmed the wifi in my house. Now, many of the wifi switches don't connect reliably.. and in general, our wifi went from "just fine, no problems..." to a problem.

I believe I understand now that I should've bought Zigbee switches and plug and a Zigbee Hub. Now... I am ready for a second attempt.

    1. Want to upgrade my wifi.. currently have the standard modem that you rent from Xfinity
    2. Want to "do it right" on all the switches and plugs.
    3. Want to automate lots of curtains and blinds as well.

Located in the US. 4500 sqft house. Probably 40-60 switches and plugs by the time I'm done.

For the Wifi Upgrade here's what I am thinking..

    1. SURFboard® S33 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem ($199) with SURFboard mAX™ Pro Mesh Wi-Fi 6 System (2-pack) ($599)
    2. Nighthawk® Multi-Gig 10Gbps Cable Modem ($299) with Orbi Tri-Band WiFi 6 Mesh System, 6Gbps, Router + 2 Satellites ($891)

The Arris SURFBoard system is less expensive and a 3.5Gbps on the router and 2Gbps on the wifi. THe NightHawk, of course more expensive, but 10Gbps on the Modem and up to 6Gpbs on the wifi.

I'm not familar with Arris... I'd lean to the Netgear NightHawk and Orbi for the Wifi Upgrade.

First question.... are those the right choices to "do this right once" and get me blazing wifi speed?

Second question... I know nothing on Zigbee Hubs that are Echo compatible and Zigbee switch/plugs and drapery automation.... please guide me oh Gods of Home Automation.....

First question is do I need a Zigbee Hub since the Echo's I have are Zigbee compatible...

Second question... what are the best Zigbee switch/plugs....

    Third question... Zigbee drapery automation

Thanks in advance... looking forward to learning

Oh... Z-Wave or Zigbee and why???
