    Whole-Home Adaptive Lighting Setup?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 06:40 PM PDT

I'm in love with HomeKit Adaptive Lighting with my Philips Hue bulbs (both Color & White Ambiance), and now I want it in my whole home!

To be specific, I'm not set on HomeKit's implementation of Adaptive Lighting specifically, but I do want lighting that changes color throughout the day on its own, and I am a pretty big fan of the color getting warmer when dimmed.

As for whole-home, what I mean is not necessarily every bulb in the house, but enough light to light every room well with adaptive lighting. So that's probably pretty close to every bulb anyway. Ideally I want to be able to light up any room in the house with enough light to work by at a color appropriate for the time of day, and all light in the entire house would always be the same color, unless I manually set a bulb otherwise.

What are my options for this? I think I could accomplish this with Home Assistant or HomeKit, but are there other options? On the hardware side, what recommendations do you have? What kinds of lamps, in-ceiling fixtures, bulbs, hubs, or switches should I consider?

As a note, minimizing cost isn't necessarily more important than a setup that works well, but I do have cost to consider when planning something at the whole-home scale.

Now that they've been out a while, what is the consensus on the FYRTUR Roller Blinds?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 10:16 AM PDT

I use both Google Assistant and HomeKit quite a bit, which these are supposed to be compatible with. I've read that the pairing and setup of the Fytrtur is a mess and that the reliability after that is also a mixed bag.

I know the Lutron shades are the best in the business and I've had zero issues with my Lutron light switches. They're rock solid. But the price for the Lutron Shades is around 5X what the Ikea shades are, which makes it hard to justify.

Is there anything else I should be comparing, thinking of or looking at?

I think just for convenience I'll probably go ahead and have these installed rather than DIY.

Smart Bulbs with GU24 to E26 E27 adapters.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 03:58 PM PDT

Hello, I am renting an apartment and every lightning fixture we have uses these 2 prong style light bulbs, I can't find smart/hue bulbs with these prongs anywhere nor do I really want to just incase I move into a different place with standard outlets.

would there be any issues with using smart bulbs/hue bulbs along with these adapters?

    Thanks for your time.

Any performance issues with connecting up a large number of wifi relay switches?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 11:40 AM PDT

I'm moving into a new house soon, and am looking to either replace some of the light switches with smart switches, or wiring in smart relays behind the existing switches.

I like the idea of Z-Wave where you have a separate mesh network as there's no risk of it interfering with the main wifi network. However the price on the Shelly 1 makes it a VERY attractive option! I'm curious if anyone has experience with either in a largish setting (thinking ~20 switches to start, but maybe adding up to ~50 in the long run), and whether there are any things to be aware of there.

How do I pick out what to buy?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 04:48 PM PDT

Fiancée and I just bought a house and being a major geek, I would like to automate as much as possible. It's starting to get frustrating though.

First purchase was a Schlage Encode because it said no hub required and I figured that would save money, but now am realizing that comes with it's own implications on LAN traffic and cloud/privacy. Although people don't seem to like the version that connects to a hub anyway...

Also bought some smart plugs to control lamps, but they render the switch useless so guests disable wifi ability.

Is there a recommended ecosystem to work within? It sounded like Home Assistant was the answer, but nothing I own works out of the box with it so I would have to flash firmware and code up some connections on my own.

Is there an easy way to see what work with what? Ideally I would have something that I can add new devices to, and it shows up for both my fiancée and I, and can at least be in one app, potentially with iOS shortcuts that go to both of our phones (probably a tall order) to limit how many taps it takes to turn on a light.

So far we have a Thermostat that works with Nexia, LG Washer/Dryer that work with ThinQ, lights that work with Alexa, and a lock that works with the Schlage app.

Smart thermostat with two-zone hydronic baseboards

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 04:37 PM PDT

I'm looking for advice on a smart thermostat that will work for my situation.

My house has hydronic baseboards, with two zones. Gas fired boiler. No A/C. Cold climate. Currently have two Honeywell thermostats with low voltage wiring: W, Rc, and C wires.

The upper level of the house has all the main living areas and bedrooms (one zone), the lower level is split between a large family room (the other zone) and the garage (separate heater and thermostat).

My goal is pretty simple, in the upper level I want to be able to use a temperature sensor placed in a bedroom instead of the one on the thermostat. Even better if it can switch to the bedroom sensor at night and the one on the thermostat in the day.

BR30 bulbs that are > 60w equivalent, Zigbee or ZWave or Tasmota compatible?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 03:41 PM PDT

I need some BR30 bulbs that are bright (i.e. > 60W equivalent), support at least whiteness color temperature (i.e. warm white <-> bright white), and support local control - Zigbee, ZWave, or Tasmota.

I don't mind if I have to pay a premium just because they are Zigbee or pre-flashed with Tasmota or whatever. I just want something that doesn't put my lights into the cloud. I run my home with Home Assistant and have no desire to open my wifi to random hackers from e.g. Tuya.

I can solder if need be to do Tasmota uploading, but it seems like bulbs are very hard to disassemble so would prefer to avoid that if possible.

Any recommendations would be most appreciated!

Quistion TUYA Smart Switch that would also work with my existing tuya light bulbs

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 03:01 PM PDT

Okay, so we have multiple Tuya smart light bulbs around the house in like table lamps and such.

But for the ceiling lights, we don't, so we would like to get a smart switch for those.

Are there any smart switches that could turn on the light bulbs and the ceiling lights on one panel?

Preferably a switch with let's say 3 buttons.

Smart curtain system - angle less than 90°

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 02:01 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm looking for a smart curtain system for my new apartment, with which I could control curtains via an app and could set up times when they should be pulled. I need to fit this system into three separate rooms.

The problem, however, is, that one of the rooms have an atypical corner window, with a degree less than 90° - approximately 76°. Do you have any tips for a solution?

So far for corner windows I have found only 90° or 135° U corner tracks.

Thanks a lot for any tip!

Wiring up Shelly 2.5 for AU receptables?

Does anybody know how to write up Shelly 2.5 for Australian style power points?

    I saw this post:

    http://blog.smarterhome.club/2020/03/27/smart-independent-receptacles-with-shelly-2-5/

but it's oriented towards NEMA plugs.

For example, here is a four-outlet receptable

Or if there's another powerpoint style that works better, let me know.
