Life after Wink? Suggestions for the safest and easiest evolution? Posted: 18 May 2020 10:51 AM PDT I bought a wink relay for my bedroom a couple of years ago to control the 2 light switches on the wall as well as serve as a hub for a few zigbee smart bulbs in room. I have Lutron Casetas in many other areas of the house, and now worry they might be the next to start trying to charge... I'm at the point where I don't want to spend anymore money on hardware the could be bricked at any movement (or put behind a paywall). Does anyone have a simple "post-Wink" explainer/primer on alternative (hopefully low or no-code) options (youtube video to set up or otherwise)? Edit: thanks all for the amazing help. For all asking - i do already have the Caseta hub (it came with their starter pack) and it's connected to my Apple HomeKit. Hoping it's not going the way of Wink but for my smart bulbs i think i'll try the sites you guys sent and try my hand with a Rasberry Pi and see if i can get it working with HomeAssistant and Homekit, and hope that i can migrate the Casetas to it one day if they go the way of Wink (praying not). Posted: 18 May 2020 09:48 PM PDT Looking for a switch that fits in a standard light switch plate that can trigger an ifttt applet depending on which state it's in. preferably 3 states but not required. Would be used to trigger a broadlink hub to switch hdmi sources on avr then roll down motorized projector screen and turn off lights. [link] [comments]
Renovating a flat in the UK and looking for some steering Posted: 18 May 2020 12:24 PM PDT Hi, I'm just getting into automation so please be kind. I recently bought a 1930 flat in London, UK and I'm looking for some ideas before I start with the renovation work next week. The flat is 3 bed about 750 sq. ft. I'm using combi boiler (Valiant) and have double ceiling with some LED lights already in two rooms and want to do the same for the other two. I will be removing the floorboards and will be running two SFTP ethernet cables to each room. I got Smartthings hub as a starter and want to add one device at a time and build up. Having said that, now is the time to do any construction changes and running different cables. However, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the number of devices that I can use. I'm somehow in favour of Z-wave devices and would like to build my automation based on this protocol. First and foremost is the thermostat - ideally, I want to go for Ecobee but that's not available in UK. I also want to get TRVs installed since I will be replacing all radiators anyway. That's my confusion - what thermostat and TRVs to go for, ideally not dependant on the cloud and easy to integrate with Smartthings or HA or Hubitat. Next are the lights - do I need a dimmer in each room (Fibaro) and any switch or I need a specific switch too ? I quiet like the ones that a touch sensitive glass look alike. I'll be also running LED strips in the living room - I can use the RGBW from Fibaro ? Same goes for the sockets, since I will be redoing the electrics should/can I install any smart sockets ? Again, Fibaro look just amazing, are they practical ? Smoke and CO sensors from Fibaro are so sleek. Last but not least I really like the roller blinds from IKEA and will be giving them a go, what do you think ? Essentially I'm looking for ideas and things that you wished you did when you renovate/decorate your home ? Apologies for long post, I just need some steering from you guys. Thanks in advance! Regards p.s. I'm unix guy so not afraid of command line or getting a bit out of the comfort zone Edit: Meant to say Z-wave not Zigbee [link] [comments]
What exactly is Wyze's business model? Posted: 18 May 2020 10:36 PM PDT From what I can tell, they sell products at a razor thin margin. That would probably mean that they are loss leading their products to get people into their ecosystem+subscriptions. Big assumption here, but I think it's mostly people who are savvy with home automation that are aware of Wyze, and they just flash the cameras with RTSP streaming or just plugging the Hub into their RPI / computer to get out of the wyze ecosystem. If so they are barely making money off just selling products if their main customers don't buy into the system My question is, is Wyze a product selling company or is their main revenue subscriptions? Should I be stocking up on 20 dollar cameras and 6 dollar sensors while I still can? [link] [comments]
Using the router's Guest Network Posted: 18 May 2020 08:07 PM PDT Hi, I have a bunch of smart switches , google homes, Sonos speakers and other stuff. Someone told me to move everything on the guest network as enhanced security. I wanted to understand if it really helps to keep these devices on a guest network. Or maybe in some other ways? Using old cell phone as motion detector to shoo off rabbits? Posted: 18 May 2020 03:30 PM PDT Is there anyway to use an old cell phone (Samsung Galaxy S9 or S10) to sense the motion of rabbits near my plants and then to make a sound to scare them off? I figured someone here can give me ideas as to what off the shelf app(s) could be used for the task. Assume that I can place a dedicated phone in a location that can have the plants in view, and besides the motion of the leaves blowing in the wind, all other motion can be considered "rabbit". Any thoughts / ideas? [link] [comments]
Looking for ideas to redesign smart home Posted: 18 May 2020 05:28 AM PDT I am looking to redesign my smart home setup. In short I am looking for the ability to control my house if the Internet is offline, as well as from voice assistants like Alexa and Google assistant. I currently have a range of various smart devices and would like to use Home Assistant to control the local side. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you [link] [comments]
Cannot trigger tasmota web request through ifttt. Posted: 18 May 2020 06:28 PM PDT Hey guys, I am ttying to trigger my tasmota flashed sonoff touch. I have put an axtion for google assistant to get triggered with some phrases. And as an action I have webhooks to post thrlugh tasmota's web requests for my lights to go on/off. The action works but it gets skipped due to etimed out. If anyone has experience I appreciate the help. Here's my applet if you need it: [link] [comments]
Robotic Floor vacuum recommendations Posted: 18 May 2020 05:09 PM PDT Mant people here recommend a robovac and I cannot remember the name of it. I do remember the company does a great job issuing firmware updates even to older models and the path finding is well liked. Help? Hoping to avoid cat hairballs and vomit. [link] [comments]
Wifi Router Firewall - No Devices Connect Now Posted: 18 May 2020 12:28 PM PDT Any increase in the firewall security of my router from the Low setting doesnt allow my Nest, Yeelight Wemo smart plug or Leviton smart switch to connect. Is there something I can do to increase my firewall security and keep the smart devices working? [link] [comments]
Best solution for ceiling fan automation (current devices: Alexa, Philips Hue, Hue Bridge) Posted: 18 May 2020 03:49 AM PDT Hi there, currently I'm only using Alexa and a Philips Hue bridge to control my three Hue lamps, two Ikea Tradfri Lamps and an Osram Smart Plug. Now I wanted to buy a ceiling fan and I wanted to automate that one as well. The fan I looked for can be controlled by a radio remote (Westinghouse Lighting ceiling fan) so I've been thinking to buy a 433 mhz radio sender for a Raspberry PI to try and contol that thing. That fan has two sockets for Philips Hue bulbs, so I could use all Hue features (like scenes) with it. Now I'm not sure how to integrate the planned Raspberry PI solution with my Alexa. I could of course create my own skill with AWS, but I think the commands for that one might feel a bit stiffy. I was hoping I could just tell "Alexa start living room fan" or something like that, but the last time I tried my own skill I always had to talk to Alexa with the skill name "Alexa tell fan control to start" (or something like that). I don't even know how that would feel if I'd like to change the speed of the fan. Therefore I was thinking about using one of the home automation solutions like openHab or Home Assistant. As I understood at least openHab has a real Alexa skill which can be accessed by voice quite naturally ("Alexa living room fan on"). On the other hand it seems that most people recommend Home Assistant nowadays - but as I've read you always need to say "Alexa ask Home Assistant to" to access the devices. Finally I've been thinking to alternatively buy a Sonoff ifan 03. That device has some Alexa integration through a second app, but I don't know if it's a good idea to add another vendor (who might disable their servers someday) into my home automation setup. Can you guy recommend a solution for the planned ceiling fan integration?
Any helps is appreciated :) - Greetings - Thom [link] [comments]
Smart plugs system for in the office? Posted: 18 May 2020 12:51 PM PDT Hey, So this one isn't so much "home Automation" as "Office Automation". We have equipment in the office that often needs to be "Unexpectedly Power-cycled", this is becoming problematic given the current climate of everyone working from home, in the event of this happening we have to message around trying to locate someone who is in the office, then direct them to the equipment in question and get them to pull the plug. I think we can solve this problem by hooking everything up through smart plugs, this would allow me to cut the power remotely. My question is, does anyone have any pointers to what would be the best thing to use, in a situation where multiple people can have control. I am thinking along the lines of a web page hosted on the local intranet we can access to power things, or even just something that supports an open API so that we can build a front-end to control them. Ideally WiFi therefore not requiring a separate hub. Cheers [link] [comments]
Posted: 18 May 2020 04:07 AM PDT Hiya folks, as the title says, building a new family home and would like to add some nifty home automation along with google home devices in most (if not all) rooms. I am a noob when it comes to this tech and to bring me up to speed with the terminology, systems and how they all work etc, does anyone have a 'beginners guide' to study up on this area? Furthermore, would appreciate some ideas from other that make life easier, some that can be shown off when guests visit etc. Thank you, appreciate your time! [link] [comments]
ESPhome deep sleep timing and other config issues Posted: 18 May 2020 03:31 AM PDT Hi everyone, a follow up post for my automatic gardener project. The aim is to create ESP-based solar-powered sensing boxes sending data to a relay to control watering. Now, for the sensor boxes I decided to use ESPHome in order to use Home Automation for data logging and visualisation. Each sensor box should poll sensors and send data to the server (running home automation) via MQTT, as well as receive commands to increase or decrease deep sleep timing and OTA. For example, during winter due to the reduced solar power production, the sleep time will be greater than in summer. Here is the hardware:
I am not sure about my ESPhome configuration, how to dynamically set the deep sleep duration via MQTT commands? What to use as update interval considering the following lifecycle wake up → connect to wifi → check for rx msg → poll sensor data → tx sensor data → go to sleep [link] [comments]
Posted: 18 May 2020 03:14 AM PDT I will change my current roller shades and motorize the movement. I will also add behind each of the switch a shelly relay (or something more relevant - please let me know!). The idea is for me to be able to remotely operate the shades though Home Assistant and AppDaemon. The thing I do not understand yet is what kind of message I am supposed to send to the relays to - fully open a shade - fully close a shade - open a shade partially (say, 30% of the height) When operating the switch manually I would press the switch and watch the shade. When it is up, down or at the height I am interested in - I release the switch. I guess that there is also an operation of the switch which says "open up" and "fully close". How does this work with remote operations? My current understanding is that this is a ON/OFF switch, which means that to operate the shade I need to send a message 'ON' and, after some time, 'OFF' - how to know/calculate "after some time"? - or is there a functionality on the switch which such as "I received ON, I am powering the shade until I get a feedback from the motor that it reached the end, so I switch to 'OFF' myself"? If my last supposition is correct, how does it work for partial openings? If it is incorrect I would be glad for any experiences you may have had automating shades. Note: I am in France (which may be relevant or not, I am thinking about power regulations, or typical setups which may be different between countries. I n any case more information is better, even if it means to adapt it to the local regulations. Thanks!) [link] [comments]
Bluetooth speaker/mic that interfaces with Python and SpeechRecognition? Posted: 18 May 2020 09:56 AM PDT I'm trying to create my own home automation system from the ground up with python. I'm using the SpeechRecognition python package to turn the audio into text, which works well with the regular usb microphone I have. I recently bought a bluetooth speaker/mic (Lenrue A2) that, when I ran the same code after connecting to it, would not work as the mic would not register hearing anything. Has anyone run into a similar issue? Any recommendations on bluetooth microphone/speakers (or even just a cheap bluetooth mic and cheap bluetooth speaker, having them as a combo is nice but not necessary). I also have a raspberry pi to work with, and would use a wired mic/speaker for that, but that presents its own set of technical difficulties. Code can be provided, my post keeps getting blocked and not sure if thats whats doing it [link] [comments] |
