Walmart Merkury RGB Bulbs vs Cheap Amazon Bulbs?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 09:39 PM PDT

Buying my first RGB smart bulbs and I'm hearing good things about the Merkury brand sold at Walmart for $10. There are also several similarly priced bulbs on amazon so I'm wondering which I should get.

Can anyone recommend which amazon bulb I should get? Or should I stick with Merkury?

    Thanks

WiFi RGB led strips alternatives to Philips

    Posted: 20 May 2020 12:06 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'd like to put a led strip in my 2.4 m kitchen, and I was thinking to attach the strip in my furniture.

I was evaluating to buy Philips Lighting White And Color Lightstrip Plus, but I've read they are not waterproof, they are just IP20. The outdoor alternative costs even more, but for Philips it seems the only solution. Any alternative or suggestion? my idea is to find a RGB strip with a high value of lumens and that work via wireless, possibly without any additional hub/switch/bridge. Thanks!

    Wink to Home Assistant Completed

    Posted: 19 May 2020 11:21 PM PDT

Successfully moved my whole smart home from Wink to Home Assistant (cloud with Alexa) without nabu casa. On my wink I had myQ and Alexa linked, and loved the remote feature. Home Assistant wasn't easy but it also wasn't impossible. I'm also fairly new to r/HomeAutomation so I hope this post is in the right place to help a now formal Wink user who didn't want to pay the $5 a month.

My Journey started the day Wink announced they would start a subscription start. I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 and Nortek stick for zwave and zigbee.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Starter Kit - 4GB RAM

    GoControl CECOMINOD016164 HUSBZB-1 USB Hub

Coming from a super noob, I had no idea what to do and I plug my monitor, keyboard, and mouse into my pi to download hass.io. This didn't work and then I tried the imaging with etcher. For a few days I was stuck here because I didn't know that using a mac you need to format the SD Card and clean the disk to FAT32. My next issue was I was still using the pi on the wifi (still an issue). I monitor the hass.io installation from my monitor connected to my pi and never finished. For days it was stick starting and stoping something because of "wlan0: link is not ready". I ended up pluging an ethernet directly in my pi just guessing that it worked and decided to see if homeassistant.local:8123 would load. And it did! For my initial setup I followed this youtube video: Beginner's guide to Home Assistant

This video also has a previous version to that could be helpful as well. I think a confusing thing I ran into was how normal he makes the whole process sound. I ended trying to use the unified addon which is wrong. His process is good (not) for setting the remote access without nabu casa. I used the DuckDns addon and ran into trouble with this as well. I had my cloud working but not SSL cert, ended up being a config issue with the "-".

Adding all my devices were easy except for my locks. The documentation on Home Assistant is what I found to be most helpful this. I still am not quite sure what some of the statuses mean on my locks however.

Kwikset 98880-004 SmartCode 888 Smart Lock

These are good locks for the price but just are to add to any smart system, I had trouble with Wink and just about the same amount with HA so keep that expectation. However, I was nice that I was able to configure user codes within HA (can't this on Wink). Another stab at Wink was after the connection to Alexa on HA I was able to lock/unlock and do garage functions as well.

Connecting HA to Alexa with HA cloud is super hard but Home Assistant Documentation makes it actually really easy. Except theres one flaw, account linking requires you use port 443. Port forwarding on remote access makes it so you port forward 443 to 8123, which means you cannot link HA with Alexa. My work around for this was simply changing the default port in the config.yaml.

Boom! I did it! I moved over the Sengled Smart LEDs , my locks, (Dome) Water Shut-Off Valve, leakSMART Water Sensor, and reintegrated Alexa and myQ plus Ring. Yes it was a bit of work but now I will never have to worry about paying $5 a month. Also it was a little fun and now I have more control. I used Yonomi to control my locks and garage with Wink before this.

Consider money, what should I do next? I'm very content with what I have now but I'm also always looking to improve. Thanks

    DIY Intruder Alarm

    Posted: 19 May 2020 10:50 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking at buying a professional installed intruder alarm but most of the systems that i found are not properly smart-home enabled. I will need a system that has some type of API/MQTT/Other to allow me to:

    1. Arm/Disarm
    2. Alert me on sensor triggers, even if alarm is disarmed

My ideal scenario is that the intruder would be a self-contained system that is reliable. I know I can build one using a hub but i want reliability - i want a system that if i am updating the main hub or if i mess the main hub etc, then the alarm continues working independently.

If i do not find a professional system i am thinking that maybe i can have a hub with the alarm logic (intruder alarm hub) that i never/rarely update (like a Hubitat etc) and then have a secondary hub (main hub) that will drive the rest of the automation logic. The 'intruder alarm hub' would then expose some of the functionality to the main hub..

So specifically; the logic of the intruder alarm will be fully contained within the intruder alarm hub. If the main hub goes down or the internal network goes down than the intruder alarm hub will continue working. For example if I have an electricity issue. Easier to have a backup battery for just the intruder alarm module as opposed to the main hub together with the PoE switches etc.

The intruder alarm hub will need some type of SIM module and will have to be hard wired to the PIRs/Sensors (not wireless) and siren.

I am aware of konnekted io but from what i found it does not have the traditional keypad and hard wired SIM alert module. And I am not sure if it can expose the functions through MQTT etc.

    Any ideas/feedback/opinions please?

    Thanks all.

    Automate our rose bushes

    Posted: 19 May 2020 04:46 PM PDT

We have a hubitat and a ring alarm system. We have nice rose bushes in front of our house. Well, we did. People are digging them up late at night and stealing them. We have 3 bushes left. We want to plant more but I can't be awake at 3 am to guard them.

I'm putting up a ring camera this weekend to monitor them and hopefully set a motion alarm to go off. But I'm not confident in that solution.

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for a solution that would let us "boobytrap" the bushes so if someone pulled on them it would set off some sort of alarm. I was trying to think of how to use like a door contact sensor or something. They are too far from a wall, but maybe I could put a stake in the ground next to them and zip tie the contact to the bush?

I'm open to any suggestions. We would like to plant more bushes but they are expensive.

Sengled bulbs not working with Alexa anymore

    Posted: 19 May 2020 12:29 PM PDT

I have a few Sengled color bulbs that I've had since last Christmas and they've worked flawlessly with my Alexa since then. Even last night they worked perfectly fine. But, for some reason, they stopped working this morning. I looked in the Alexa app and saw that they were being recognized as plugs, and not lights, but even when I changed them back to lights, all I could do is turn them off and on. I can't change the brightness, I can't change the color, only off an on. Has anyone else had this issue recently? Is there a fix? I feel like I've tried everything but I'm still at a loss.

*UPDATE* I tried to unlink my sengled account from my alexa app for an hour and then relinked it and the lights work! Thank yall for the help

Buying a new house, where do I start?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 05:49 PM PDT

As the title says, I close on a new house at the end of June. It's pretty dated but was built in 92 so I plan on doing a lot of upgrading through the years. My last house I had installed some Lutron switches and was controlling them through the alexa app and my echo. With this house I was going to go with the Legrand Adorne series (I work in electrical distribution so I get them at cost and I like the look), a probably a Nest thermostat, some type of smart deadbolts (preferably with punch code), and the Schneider power monitor. After that where and what should I do? I'll have a well so do I need one of the fancy leak detectors, and will they work on a well type system? What's a good system to tie everything together?

    Half hot USB outlet

    Posted: 19 May 2020 05:25 PM PDT

Little quandary for you all I'm trying to solve...

Aunt wants a half hot electrical outlet where the top outlet is always on, bottom outlet is controlled by a switch. This in itself is easy and doable. Here's the twist: she also wants USB outlets on them, to be on all the time.

I've searched and can't find anything. So I'm trying to give her a solution that gives her the ability to use it the same with maybe some kind of wireless control.

I told her this was impossible, but I wasn't listened to, so now she's complaining she can't have her way...and the Electrican is about ready to walk off the job because he just doesn't want to deal with it anymore.

Question about Roborock S5 Max vs S5, or other brand equivalent

    Posted: 19 May 2020 03:40 PM PDT

Was hoping someone on here has had experience with both the Roborock S5 Max and the S5. I am just curious how much better the mopping is on the S5 Max over the S5. I really care about vacuuming and mopping but I don't have a huge house. About 1600 sq ft. Only probably 500 sq ft are tile, if that.

But I have to mop my kitchen a lot as I usually come in from inside my garage and with my shoes still on walk around my tile kitchen. So I want one with a halfway decent mopping capabilities.

Is there any equivalent to these(I believe it has to be an irobot) with good mopping but also the self empty base that you would recommend?

Thanks for any info, there are so many out there it's a bit overwhelming.

    Lutron Bridge Pro rant

    Posted: 19 May 2020 09:29 AM PDT

So I am transitioning over to HA (some of my Lutron dimmers are on Wink). I got the Lutron Bridge Pro so I can use it with HA. I have deleted all my previous lights from my old non-pro bridge (and removed it from my account) and now I am having a heck of a time getting the dimmers setup on the new bridge. I have had to factory reset all [but one] dimmer and a lamp dimmer multiple times and I still can't get the bridge to connect (I am hoping to use the lamp dimmer as an extender (I had it previously in a different location).

Now I'm not feeling so hopeful that my dimmers connected to my Wink are really going to connect to the new bridge. :-(

Are there any ways to connect to Lutron dimmers besides Wink and the Lutron Bridge?

RGBW lights -what do you use them for?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 08:57 AM PDT

I am redoing a kitchen and will be installing 20+ new lights (between recessed, under counter, pendant, etc) along with switches. I plan to make most z-wave controllable but struggle with the need for RGBW vs white.

The home automation geek in me wants to not miss the opportunity to put in the latest and greatest (and therefore all remotely controllable RGBW lights) but the practical side just simply can't see the need for colored lighting in a kitchen.

So, what are you using RGBW for? And any thoughts for a kitchen?

    Remotely controlling BACnet thermostat

    Posted: 19 May 2020 01:56 PM PDT

My parents built a cottage about 10 years ago and it seems that the heating controls are tied into a BACnet Building Controller.

Three thermostats are Delta DNS24L's tied into a Delta DSC-1180E building controller.

We want to be able to control temperature remotely, and easily (my parents are in their 70's). Is there anything I can do with this fairly easily, without getting too complicated or expensive?

    Wink relay hacks?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 01:44 PM PDT

So, I have moved everything over to Home Assistant from Wink due to Wink being asshats. I like hass much better anyways. But, I have 3 Wink relay switches and I wanted to see if anyone can point me in a direction to root them and/or use them with hass somehow. I may just replace them if I can't...

Does anyone want a Wink hub2 and 3 wink relays?

I want to trigger a Homekit event when I first grab my phone in the morning

    Posted: 19 May 2020 09:57 AM PDT

I struggle with scrolling excessively on my phone when I'm half-awake in the morning and don't have enough executive brain function to snap out of it. I want to jump start my morning routine by turning on all my lights the moment I first grab my phone. Wondering if there's a smart way to do this.

One idea I have would be to connect a Qi wireless charging pad to a smart plug that measures power draw, and create a Homekit event that triggers when it detects I've taken my phone off the charger. Or create some kind of Siri Shortcut that can somehow prompt/test me for if I'm grabbing my phone in the morning, and if conditions are met, then fire the event. But one cavaet would be this event could only fire once (the first time I grab my phone in the morning), obviously it would not work if it happened every time I grabbed my phone.

    Ideas?

Ready to throw it all out and start fresh due to the Wink Hub issue.

    Posted: 19 May 2020 07:40 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I have most of the house wired with smart lights of various brands. One christmas, everyone got us bulbs from different manufacturers so we wired them up with Wink.

Based on how Wink has handled this whole switching to subscription process, I'm ready to ditch Wink entirely, along with the mishmash of random bulbs.

Here's what I'm looking for to start:

    - 8 BR30 bulbs

    - A hub (if necessary) to control them

    - Supports Alexa (dots and studios all over the house)

    - Ideally supports HomeKit for when Apple gets their game together and comes out with an expanded homepod lineup

    Any suggestions?
