    Robbers getting scared away!

    Posted: 20 May 2020 10:33 PM PDT

This just happened yesterday at 2:20 am. My mom noticed that the backyard lights turned on in the middle of the night but thought it was a duck since we live near the lake so didn't do much. Fast forward a couple of hours ago she watched the doorbell camera and noticed two guys walking out of our backyard so I check my front yard camera and saw a car drop off two guys and speed past the house. Then the two guys walked into my backyard where I have a motion sensor and it triggered my backyard lights which made them walk into my front yard where another motion sensor triggered my front yard lights. Once that happened they took off full speed like a cop was behind them. Can't really make out who they were but glad it scared them away.

    Setup:

    • Smartthings
    • Skybell HD
    • GE z-wave toggle light switches
    • Z-wave motion sensors

    Using Google Home on porch

    Posted: 20 May 2020 05:26 PM PDT

Hey all. My wife and I have just finished up our patio and are exploring the idea of leaving a Google Home(that we already own) on the porch for music. I know there are better solutions for music, but we just have this spare Google Home so it would mean no need to buy anything else. My question is, what security concerns(if any) should I be concerned about? Is this an absolute no no? Thanks in advance!

    Wink Update

    Posted: 20 May 2020 05:56 PM PDT

Just got the email below from Wink. Looks like they are not starting the subscription fees right away. Doesn't matter to me, I had already moved the few things I had left off of it and deleted the app. I'm guessing the amount they were going to get from subscriptions was t enough to make it worth it.

    Dear Wink Users,

We want to start this message with a huge and sincere THANK YOU to everyone who subscribed. Wink was in a very rough spot, but thanks to your support, we are able to keep moving forward! It was not an easy decision to switch to a paid service, and we know that the short timeline put a lot of pressure on all of you, but we had no other way to continue the Wink service as it is currently known.

The support we have seen for our subscription service has been incredible. We feel we can extend Wink's free service for the time being, confident that we can set a new start date for the subscription service to begin, giving you all more time to use Wink (subscription-free) whether you signed up or not.

For those customers who have signed up, we want to assure you that the first month's payment has not yet been processed, and we will notify subscribers before we move forward with Wink Subscription.

Cool ideas for door open indicators?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 06:57 PM PDT

Just looking for some ideas for a neat way to modify what I already have set up.

I want some visual indicator that will show me if any doors to the outside are open at night. I have a SmartThings hub available to use. I have set up webcore as well but haven't dabbled in it yet.

Currently I have an LED strip that illuminates my stairs when it detects movement at night, so I just created another routine to make it turn on and change to red if any doors are open during the same time period.

However, I think it would be way cooler to have individual indicators per door...somehow. As an example, something like replacing a clock face with a picture of each door and have an LED for each door.

That idea is ok but maybe kind of lame, and I was wondering if anyone else had done something similar that they were proud of. Or even if I wanted to go with my lame idea...where do I even get small LEDs that are individually controllable with SmartThings? Google has not been my friend on this.

If anyone has experience using home automation (Google Home/Amazon Echo) etc. for older parents, I'd love to hear your experiences.

    Posted: 20 May 2020 06:09 PM PDT

I'm researching this topic for a school paper and would love to hear your experiences with this.

    1. Do your parents enjoy these products? What do they use them for (e.g. are these best for entertainment tools, emergency situations, medication reminders?)
    2. What are their attitudes around data collection/privacy? What are yours?
    3. Have you had any mishaps (e.g. the other day on Reddit I saw someone's doorbell cam broadcasting on someone else's Google Nest by mistake)

    Thanks in advance!

Making my Wink Relay Free Again

    Posted: 20 May 2020 10:42 AM PDT

Making my Wink Relay Free Again

Since Wink recently announced their mandatory monthly subscription (and is getting sued for it), I've had to come up with a way to integrate my Wink Relay with HomeKit without Wink's service. My solution is comprised of 100% open-source software and hosted locally on a RaspberryPi. Here's how I did it!

    1. Factory Reset and Root the device (guide)
    2. Install Wink Relay manager (guide)
    3. Deploy NodeRED and Mosquitto to a local RaspberryPi running k3s (though you could install them directly on Raspbian)
    4. Using the Homekit and MQTT nodes for NodeRED, define an awesome flow!

    Noise level detection?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 12:58 PM PDT

I dunno how many of you are parents so if you're not one.......hear me out before you judge too harshly.

For the rest of you who ARE I imagine you can confirm. Children......are LOUD!!!! It's like they have two volumes. "Huh? Speak up I can't hear you." And "TOP OF THEIR FUCKING LUNGS!!!!"

So I quietly added a routine to my Alexa system that politely asks my 8 year old to "Please stop yelling" via her Echo Dot in her bedroom. The routine can be called up via voice command but I typically just open the app and play the routine.

Is there a sensor out there (Zigbee or Z-Wave) that detects sound level and could be used to trigger the routine automatically without my intervention?

Where do you put your sensors? Out in the open, on a shelf, attached to the wall?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 11:46 PM PDT

As the title says, do you just leave your sensors on a table or shelf, do you attach them to a wall or ceiling, are they out in the open or hidden?

Trying to purchase small discrete sensors, and don't want them to be obvious.

Show me your setup. What's your creative solution?

Can someone verify if I have this right about my setup?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 05:13 PM PDT

Hey, I'm brand new to this lifestyle. I'm just wondering if I have everything down correctly.

If I have a Raspberry Pi 4 with a Home Assistant installation along with a Phoscon Raspbee II, this should act as a Zigbee "hub." I'm then able to connect Zigbee components to Home Assistant and we're all fine and dandy. Correct?

So, if I buy an Aqara Door and Window Sensor, I don't need to buy their hub (even though they say I do) because I have my own Zigbee hub. Correct?

    Wrong?

Thanks, sorry for being an idiot. I just want to be sure.

Moving from Wink to HomeSeer question

    Posted: 20 May 2020 07:05 PM PDT

Planning to migrate from Wink Hub 2 to HomeSeer...only question is, which S2 Smart Hub is more appropriate? Leaning towards the low-end HomeSeer HomeTroller Zee S2 Lite, but wanted to make sure it's more ideal over the non-Lite version.

I'm currently running 8 GE Z-Wave lights switches & 2 Lutron Z-Wave smart plugs. I have other devices (Ecobee & MyQ), but they all can connect directly to Home Remote & Alexa so I likely won't bother connecting those to HomeSeer.

Anyways, would you recommend the Lite or non-Lite model?

    Home Automation and Internet Security

    Posted: 20 May 2020 06:24 PM PDT

with all these Chinese products out there when pairing to your network you supply wifi and pw to connect a hub or what have you. Does this pose any risk?

Im sure this has been discussed, but wanted to get a fresh take on how you protect yourselves. I try to buy from larger known companies for these neat gadgets. I have a bunch of switches and such.

is there a risk into these things snooping into your traffic, etc?

Wife wants to get Echo Dot or something for our 5 year old. Need suggestions.

    Posted: 20 May 2020 09:24 PM PDT

Hey everyone... First... I'm not sure if there's a better place for this. My wife wants to get something to put in our 5 year old's bedroom. We do a bedtime routine with him, and we read him 3 (obviously) short books, we each tell him a bedtime story that we make up, and then it's bedtime. He constantly calls for us and asks for bedtime story podcasts.

My wife would like whatever is put in there to be extremely limited to what he can do. She basically only wants him to be able to ask for a bedtime story podcast. She doesn't want other music to be played there or anything. It's ideal if it's one device. Otherwise, I'd just put an ipod mini in there with a crap ton of bedtime stories loaded and put it on shuffle with a sleep timer or something. But if I did that, we'd need a separate speaker, and I guarantee he'd be adjusting volume all the time, and it would keep him awake even longer. So... buttons in general are undesirable... which I don't think we could get around.

What do you all think? Is there a good option at all?

A Few Home Automation Questions related to Wyze, TP-link, Vizio, Sonos, and Alexa

    Posted: 20 May 2020 05:24 PM PDT

    Hi all!

I have had smart home devices for a while now but am getting started with home automation! I am hoping that you guys may be able to help me out with some questions I have.

    1. I wanted to make it so that, when my Vizio m65-e0 TV turns on, it controls a few different TP-link Kasa smart plugs and switches. I have a home bridge server running so I was thinking that I could use that but it doesn't seem to work when I create the automation.
    2. I also have a Wyze motion sensor in the kitchen that turns on the kitchen lights. During the morning, there is another routine set in the Alexa app that turns off the same kitchen lights after no activity on the motion sensor. I was wondering if there was a way to only have this "turn off routine" occur if it's sunny outside.
    3. I have a Wyze contact sensor attached to my shower door that begins to shuffle a playlist on my Sonos one speaker once the shower door opens (or so I thought it would). Unfortunately, the routine only triggers like 60% of the time. The contact sensor shows as open/closed correctly in the wyze app but doesn't trigger the Alexa routine to play music on my Sonos one sometimes. Was wondering if you knew any other services I could use to accomplish this that works more consistently. The service must be able to shuffle the music and have a suppression feature so that, when I get out of the shower, it doesn't trigger the routine again.

Thank you so much for your help!!

A few questions from a newb (HomeAssistant, Amazon Dash, and a doorbell request)

    Posted: 20 May 2020 09:05 PM PDT

Hey there everyone, I've recently gotten in to home automation (mostly out of boredom). I'm not super well versed in a lot of tech stuff. I know enough to get in to trouble once in awhile.

I've tried to install Home Assistant on an old Linux box I have laying around. And when I finally got the web interface to load, I was missing the supervisor tab? Meaning there was a bunch of workaround stuff I was going to have to do. At this point I was tired and had been fighting with HA all day so I didn't look too much further in to it. Does anyone have a current tutorial about installing HA on Ubuntu? In a way that would give me the supervisor tab?

(Hopefully at this point you get an idea of my level of diy. I like some but not tons)

The Amazon Dash question is the standard 6 month, anyone reverse engineer these bad bois recently? I'm smart enough to have watched a bunch of vids and get really excited about connecting them with IFTTT but not smart enough to read all the posts to see that Amazon bricked them. I greedily bought a bag off eBay for $10 only to find that they're essentially worthless currently. I've tried this as it was the most recent I could find. Sadly when I get to the point of playing the .wav, the button turns off. So, probably a waste of $10 but figured I'd ask.

Now the Amazon Dash button is what I was going to use for my doorbell. I, like so many here, have a weird use case. I have a large privacy fence at the front of my property that I'd like to attach one to. Now you may be getting grand ideas of how large when I say "property" But it's like 100 yards from my front door. So, at the main entrance gate I'd like to put a button that broadcasts on our Google Home's, "Someone is at the gate" and or have it go through IFTTT and just have it be a push notification to a group of phones. Considering my level of diy, what's the cheapest idea you've got for this? There's wifi out there, it's just kind of spotty. I know there's the cheap doorbells that will chime indoors, but I'm looking for something to talk to my phone.

    tl:dr

1.)How do I install HomeAutomation on Ubuntu? Should I just give up and get a hub?

2.)Any recent news on how to reverse engineer a dash button?

3.)If no news on the dash button front, what's the cheapest wifi button I can get that can semi-easily pair with IFTTT?

Thanks so much for reading my book!

Alexa keeps adding a random Xbox to my devices; how do I stop this?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 02:11 PM PDT

I have one Xbox one x, my Microsoft account reflects this However my Alexa keeps adding another Xbox ("connected via Microsoft") automatically. It's extremely annoying whenever I try to use it and it successfully does the command followed by "I cannot connect to the Xbox".

    How do I stop this?

I'm borderline going to connect the Kinect back up delete the skill or scrapping Alexa because she has been really frustrating lately. I have tried to keep the added Xbox there and disabling it, but then she doesn't do the command on the Xbox that is still enabled. I've also tried renaming but it's still somehow connected. Only success I've had is deleting the Xbox every day

Plex Media Server from Home Assistant - EASY INSTALL (Video Tutorial)

Plex Media Server from Home Assistant - EASY INSTALL (Video Tutorial)

In today's video/article we will go to the fun and entertaining part of a Smart Home and that will be the Media in all kinds and forms. To help us with that we will use Plex Media Server right from the Home Assistant Add-on store.

    https://youtu.be/s-TTmdZ4rn0

Plex Media Server from Home Assistant - EASY INSTALL (Video Tutorial)

If you prefer to read, check the full article here - https://peyanski.com/plex-media-server-from-home-assistant-easy-install

Here's a common situation that a lot of people find themselves in and that includes me. You have music, movies, TV shows and photos, but you don't have an easy way to access them on all of your devices.

As end result you don't watch them and they just sit somewhere and wait. But their time never comes and you eventually delete them to free up some disk space.

If you're looking for a no-headache way to watch your media anywhere - Plex Media Server installed from Home Assistant is one of the best and easy ways in my opinion.

And I will show you exactly that. After that I will integrate Plex Media Server with Home Assistant so the clients playing media will show up as Home Assistant media players. And They will report their status as Sensors in Home Assistant.

    Cheers,

    Kiril

Have an old Roomba 774 - worth upgradeing to a Roborock S5?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 04:05 AM PDT

    Hi,

I currently have an iRobot Roomba 774 which have been used for about 4 years.

It's working but I've been reading plenty of super positive reviews about the Roborock S5.

What I am missing the most is the ability to choose which part of the apartment to clean.

Do you think this upgrade is worth it?

Any other big differences in how the two operate? Would the Roborock S5 vacuum better than my old Roomba or would it just be a 'meh' upgrade?

Any of you made the switch?

    Thankful for any input here
