Personal Weather Stations & Smartthings success stories? Posted: 21 May 2020 11:53 PM PDT I'm considering adding a PWS to the house, mostly to use as an educational tool, but partially to integrate into ST. In terms of integration, are there any success stories, or just as important, any products to avoid due to lack of interoperability? [link] [comments]

Posted: 21 May 2020 10:01 PM PDT I recently purchased the Insignia HomeKit garage door opener and struggled to find a single clear guide with photos for how to get it working with my Chamberlain myQ B750 garage door opener. Using a couple posts and comments I found of other people doing this, I decided to document my attempt at it just in case anyone else is trying to do this in the future. This should work for all openers that use a Chamberlain/LiftMaster control panel with a Learn button (Mine is Model #: 041A7327-1) that aren't supposed to be compatible with the HomeKit controller. In the end it was super easy and all you need is some extra wiring and a soldering iron. Here's a few photos that may help if you're attempting this yourself. 1: I took the wall mounted control panel apart. The pcb is held into the case by a single tab on each side. Just spread it apart and pop it out. 2: I happened to have a long length of extra wiring from the old garage door opener that was here when I bought the house, but any wiring should work for this as long as it has two conductors and is long enough to run back to wherever your Insignia HomeKit controller is plugged in. I stripped and soldered one end of my wiring to the two wires that plug into the HomeKit controller. 3: Using a multimeter I found out which of the 2/4 contacts on the button had continuity when pressed, then soldered the other end of my wires to each. I connected it so the red wire from the Insignia controller went to the lower right contact and the black wire to the upper left. (My wiring was unfortunately white/blue so the photos I've included may be slightly confusing. Blue=Red, White=Black. I don't think polarity matters anyway.) A quick note from my prior research, it seems that on the Chamberlain control panels without the motion sensor like mine, the contacts you need to solder onto are the two on the right side of the button but yours may be different. 4: When you snap it all back together, there isn't much room left for the wires to wrap around between the case and pcb. I used a file and made two little notches in the plastic so they wouldn't get pinched. Everything works perfect and there hasn't been any issues at all. Hopefully someone finds this helpful, feel free to ask me any questions you have and I'll do my best to answer them! [link] [comments]
How to add a second switch for an existing smart light Posted: 21 May 2020 05:01 PM PDT I am looking for a smart switch that does not directly power a light, but instead triggers another smart switch to toggle state. I have a controller mounted up in a ceiling fan that controls the fan speed and the light. It is controled from the remote that came with it, the Smart Life app, or Google Assistant. I want to add a permanently mounted wall switch that controls the light. I bought a switch, connected it to the Smart Life app, and created an "automation" that turns on the fan light when the switch is turned on and turns off the fan light when the switch is turned off. The problem is that if the remote, the app, or Google Assistant is used to control the fan light, it can get out of sync with the wall switch which would then have to be pressed twice to toggle the light. This is so close, but I think the switch sort of randomly requiring two presses some times will be worse than no switch at all. Is there a product that is meant to be more like a remote than a replacement for an existing switch? Is there a technique for fixing this in software? Light Bulb Socket (E26) that Works with Smartthings? Posted: 21 May 2020 08:24 PM PDT I've been looking for a while now and I can't seem to find anything that works. I have an outdoor light at home that I would like to control using Smartthings or something compatible with it (zigbee or z-wave). The light bulb I would like to use is one of those flame looking ones and does not have a "smart" version, so I need help with either replacing the switch or the socket. I have no neutral wire on the switch so that is likely hard to find a solution, so I'm mostly looking for some help with a replacement smart socket. The outdoor light has a vertical height limit and I don't think the Everspring socket will work but that is the only one I've ever found. Anyone have any other suggestions? As far as the socket, I'm happy to hear if there's a solution to replace this type of switch with smart switches without neutral wire, but so far I have not found anything: [link] [comments]
Trying to pick some smartbulbs. Any opinions on Yeelight vs Wyze bulbs? Posted: 21 May 2020 08:08 PM PDT I'm replacing a couple of Eufy lumos lights in my overhead fans in my living room - because one of them went bad, they're discontinued, and buying a replacement is now too costly to justify. Smart switches are a no-go here because the same switch controls my fans and the lights attached to them. I just want quality, soft (tuned to soft) white light that's bright enough to be my primary light in my living room. I basically want them to look and feel as close to incandescent bulbs as possible. The RGB options in the Eufy bulbs I had were kinda neat but I never used them after the first week of having them. Harsh light messes with me - gives me headaches, annoys me, etc. I was wondering if anybody could speak to the light quality of Yeelight vs Wyze, or has any other recommendations. If you have another option that I should definitely take a look at, please let me know. [link] [comments]

Anyone using any smart pool sensors (Tempreture and or chemical)? Posted: 21 May 2020 06:55 AM PDT Has anyone used or have any solutions for monitoring their pools into their HA setup? Currently, I just wanted to watch the temperature via Zwave if possible, but hell, I can barely find any Zwave outdoor gate sensors. (I have zero clue why) It doesn't have to be through HA, even just an app at the moment would be beneficial. Some preliminary searching: [link] [comments]

what security systems works with ST hub Posted: 21 May 2020 05:42 PM PDT i had brinks and i have a smartthings hub. I want to do a diy security system, but it seems like nothing is compatible with smartthings but the ADT which seems to be headed to discontinue. what do you guys suggest? [link] [comments]
Will a smartlock battery last longer if I just never connect it to WiFi? Posted: 21 May 2020 05:34 PM PDT I want a sleek touchscreen lock, like the Yale Assure SL or the Nest x Yale. But I don't want to change the batteries three or four times per year just so my Nest Hub Max can lock the door via voice command. If I set a lock up using WiFi, and then disconnect it, will I enjoy substantially improved battery life? [link] [comments]
Is there a device that can switch a USB connection between inputs? Posted: 21 May 2020 01:33 PM PDT I have my home PC on my desk, with my work laptop connected to my monitors on second inputs. When I want to use my PC I have to unplug the mouse and keyboard USB inputs from the laptop's dock and crawl behind my desk to plug them into the PC manually. Is there some device that can take in a USB connection, wire it to two different devices, and switch between them? I've done some searching and haven't found anything. EDIT: Ideally the USB switch could be integrated into my Homebridge/HomeKit setup. I also have a smartthings hub for Zigbee. I've seen some of the manual USB switches but something integrated would be awesome. Sorry for not making that clear. EDIT 2: My long-term goal is a fully-integrated home system with my lights and computer setup connected to HomeKit scenes. So I could activate a "Work Mode" scene and my keyboard & mouse would switch to my work laptop, and my lighting would go brighter. A "dev mode" scene would switch to soft lighting and my desktop PC. And a "Game Mode" scene would turn off lights and (hopefully) turn on my TV for gaming (which is connected to my PC via a HDMI cable under the rug). But this is the ultimate goal, I'm getting there step by step. Switching display inputs will probably be the hardest part to automate. [link] [comments]
Actuated hose valve for use with a sprinkler controller Posted: 21 May 2020 03:39 AM PDT I have a bunch of soaker hoses laid out on my property and I would like to buy a sprinkler control system and a 4 way manifold of some type that can be actuated by the sprinkler controller. I have found 4 way timers that I can hook to the spigot but if I look for something similar that instead receives a signal to open up I find nothing. Any ideas? I want to avoid burying things. Posted: 21 May 2020 04:36 PM PDT So I have a few old tablets that I want to mount around the house as smart home controllers. The problem is that tablet chargers enter from the side and that really ruins the look. Does anyone know if a good and cost effective low profile angled charger (micro a usb and lightning) or a frame/mount that will hide the charger connection? [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 May 2020 03:57 AM PDT Anyone know a way of easily disabling Hue Motion Sensors so that your costume scenes aren't overridden when someone enters the room. I know how to turn it off in the app, but the whole thing I'm trying to accomplish is not needing the phone. I'm trying to set up a Hue Tap. [link] [comments]
New home with ADT pulse touchscreens--how to use them? Posted: 21 May 2020 04:09 PM PDT Just moved to a place with two ADT pulse touchscreens (but no subscription) and would love to use them to display the local weather or something. They say there is no internet connection, and I'm not sure how to connect them to my wifi. Any ideas? [link] [comments]
Switch controlled Attic Fan and Thermostat Posted: 21 May 2020 03:58 PM PDT Right now I have an attic fan and just a regular boring thermostat. If I leave it running overnight to save on the AC, it can get rather cold by the time we wake up. Would it be easy to get a smart switch for the fan and a smart thermostat and have the fan turn off for the remainder of the night once a certain temperature is reached? [link] [comments]
Recommendation for someone new to HA Posted: 21 May 2020 04:40 AM PDT I'll start off first by saying I'd like something that is clean but may require editing to fine tune. Longevity I don't mind buying upgrades every 3-5 years. I'd like to run most of the automation via Home Assistant on a RP 4+. I'd prefer not to buy a bunch of different hubs but maybe 1 or 2 at most. What I'm looking to do (some might be unrealistic)

Anyone installed the outdoor nest cams? I just had a few questions Posted: 21 May 2020 03:13 PM PDT So with nest finally making their subscription a little more palletable at a flat $6 a month for all cameras, I'm tempted to go with their outdoor cameras. Although being wifi im a little concerned. With other cameras I'd just run a POE cable to them, but it looks as if the nest cameras only have USB to a standard socket plug? So instead of routing cables into my attic, I'd have to route it through my walls into a room with socket plugs? Maybe I'm missing something here, but this seems like a very messy way to do things.. especially considering I don't have socket plugs that close to the corners of my house where I'd be mounting these. Maybe I'm totally missing something here? If you do have them, any feedback? Are they worth it? [link] [comments] |
