Admitting defeat and returning my August Smart Lock & Bridge combo Posted: 04 Jun 2020 08:19 PM PDT Been fighting with this since I bought it new almost 30 days ago. First couple of weeks it worked nearly flawlessly, including auto-unlock. Then, after about 2 weeks, the problems began. Issues with auto-unlock mostly, sometimes my phone can't connect to the lock at all. I can see in my notifications it's attempting to auto-unlock but inevitably I end up opening the app to unlock or just use a key. I support Android among other things as an IT pro and I've made sure every single permission and setting it needs is correct, it's just a terrible app for a very expensive lock. I should note that I was able to get the auto-unlock to work 95% of the time by setting it up in Home Assistant (aka Hass.io) and configuring geofencing there but that's not at all satisfactory to me. Also successfully built a home screen widget on my Pixel 2 using HA because mysteriously August doesn't have one. Very disappointed that August doesn't appear to be the outlier here, seems that the entire industry is still struggling with auto-unlocking. Guess I'll give them another shot in a couple of years. Anyone have the Venstar Voyager/Explorer model thermostats? Specifically the T3700 Posted: 04 Jun 2020 08:31 PM PDT Hey guys, professional systems integrator here, but I'm looking for something for myself. Just a bit of background I work with automation systems like control4/URC TC/RTI for a living but at home I use anything but (homeseer, harmony, URC CCP, eventghost, even bash scripts lulz) After searching for the perfect thermostat for some time, I found this. It seems to check all the boxes. It's an actual plain thermostat with buttons, has an open REST API, a web interface, alexa integration, and is affordable. Anyone have any feedback on these? Posted: 04 Jun 2020 08:25 PM PDT So I run Hone Assistant as my hub and have the usual aeotec z wave stick that I have paired with some Inovelli switches and dimmers. I would like to update the firmware on the dimmers and that can not be done from Home Assistant. inovelli did put out a doc on how to do this which requires using a z wave stick from a windows computer. My question is can I power down my z wave network on Home Assisant and use that stick to update then plug back into HA and turn z wave back on like nothing happened? Or is the pairing stored on the stick and all the inclusion/exclusion for the update screw up my swabs network in HA? TLDR; can I use a z wave stick that has devices paired with it, in a completely separate network to preform firmware updates? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Jun 2020 11:19 PM PDT I've hooked up a few wifi Smart switches around my place now and was thinking of moving on to getting a thermostat. I plan on using either Alexa or Google. What features should I be looking for? Got any recommended models or brands? [link] [comments]
On/Off for ~5 seconds every 30 minutes? Is it possible? Posted: 04 Jun 2020 07:51 PM PDT I've created a method for making bread using my stand mixer where after mixing the ingredients I turn it on for about 5 seconds then leave it off for 30 minutes and repeat that over a few hours. Does anyone know of a smart plug that I can use to automate this process (ie, on for 5 seconds, off for 30 mins etc)? Most plugs Ive found are for minimum 1 minute on time. Thank your help in advance! [link] [comments]
Control TP-Link Kasa Wifi Plug from a different wireless network? Posted: 04 Jun 2020 06:35 PM PDT I was wondering if the TP-Link Kasa Wifi Plug can be controlled from your mobile device if they're both on different wifi networks. My wifi plug is on the House 1 Network, while I am currently on my House 2 Network, 60 miles away from each other. Is it possible to see if it is on from my mobile device? [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 Jun 2020 03:15 PM PDT I've had a Drayton Wiser Heat system control my central heating and hot water since December 2018. For the most part I've been very happy with the system and enjoy the benefits and savings. I have 13 of their radiator thermostats and unfortunately have now had four of them fail at various times over the past 10 months. They just stop communucating with the hub. It's like when the batteries exhaust but a new set of batteries makes no difference. When it happens you lose control of the heat in that room. I wonder if there's anyone else out there experiencing similar failures? Is this common? [link] [comments]
Looking for a solution on my Garage Lighting. Posted: 04 Jun 2020 03:08 PM PDT This isn't exactly home automation, but i'm not sure where else to post my question. A year ago, I bought This Piece of crap from costco. The remote eats through batteries like no other and when there is a fresh battery it still give me problems. I have two-4 foot utility lights that span the entire garage connected to the same outlet on the ceiling. One light is connect to one controlled outlet, etc. What I'm really looking for is a wireless stand alone unit similar to the one I bought, but has a wall switch, such as this. But I've yet to find anything. I've searched amazon and ebay, but came up short. Has anyone ever installed anything like this? Or know where I could find it? [link] [comments]
Smart lock with longest lasting battery Posted: 04 Jun 2020 01:21 PM PDT It seems that all the popular smart lock manufacturers (Kwikset, Schlage, Yale) all seem to have an "up to one year" battery life. This is based on regular use ( 10 times a day i think). Is anyone aware of any brands that have a greater than 1 year battery life expectancy? Somehow I'm finding that a < 1 year battery life expectancy for a main lock, a deal breaker. [link] [comments]

[DIY] Air purifier, looking for tips, parts Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:59 PM PDT I posted first in r/homeassistant. A user suggested I cross-post here. This post is more detailed. I'm thinking about making a little air purifier/air mover. I'm not sure if I can ask here, I know some of you are deep into DIY and I hope some will be willing to help. I would buy a MERV filter instead of an HEPA one as they are less expensive and I mainly want to capture dust and kill bacteria/viruses. (I'll compare the ratings later) I might also use a G23 socket and plug in a UV-C bulb in there. I need help with the electronic parts. I never built anything really. So even if I bought a ESP8266 (Amazon), I don't really know what to do next. I will need some kind of thin and big blower that would run on 12V I imagine and some micro-controller that can output 12V while running a 5-8W lightbulb and a 250CFM blower (I guess it would need to accept PWM or something to control the fan speed). I'll also need a wall adapter but my knowledge stops here. I won't need any buttons but I can add some later to control (on/off) the fan and the bulb in case my HA raspberry blows LOL I was thinking about buying a premade one of course, but I have some issues:
I was thinking of buying a sheet of 1/8 inch thick wood to make the case and add support inside if needed. I wont be moving the "unit" around so no issue there. Some additions: I was looking at blowers because they provide better air pressure from my understanding, but if I use a MERV filter, which air pass through easier generally compared to a HEPA filter, maybe I can use a standard fan or something. To move the air up in the unit for exhaust, I was thinking about using plastic sheets (similar to those). I came with the idea after looking at some tear-down videos of Winix (Youtube) and other similar air purifiers. I'm also in the process of making (battery-powered maybe) multisensors so the unit itself wouldn't need one to monitor air quality as Home Assistant would take care of that. (Sensor could include: temp, humidity, light, particle sensor, VOC, motion) Any help regarding the components I would need, how to program the chip or similar projects/videos . Thanks folks! PS: I already have a UV-C GG1000 and GG1100 from Germ Guardian and I like them. I never noticed an ozone smell from the units (compared to a Honeywell "purifier") [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 Jun 2020 09:13 AM PDT Hey guys, brand new to home automation and I have a couple questions- Sonoff with Tasmota to control the whole house fan Shelly H&T to monitor outside temperatures Smart Thermostat (I'm leaning towards ecobee right now) Actuator with Sonoff to control downstairs window Everything would be automated with home assistant. In theory I should be able to set parameters where if the outside temperature reaches a certain level it turns off the AC/opens the window/turns on the house fan, right? My hangup is making sure the A/C turns off. Are Ecobees pretty programmable using something like HA? Is there anything I'm missing/anything that would work better? [link] [comments]
LF IR Blaster/Smart Hub recommendations to help fulfill my home automation dreams Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:20 PM PDT Hello! I am looking for recommendations on an IR Blaster / Smart Hub combination or system to help set me on the right path of my home automation journey. Ideally, I want to invest in a system that is efficient, reliable, and flexible and of course will work with my existing devices. A friend recommended a Broadlink IR Blaster and the SmartThings Hub seems to be the go to for hub choices. If there exists a superior device that is a combination of the two I would love to hear about it. I've seen the Harmony Hub with Zigbee Extender but that combo is a bit pricey and people seem to have pretty mixed reviews. I have pretty decent technical skills so I don't mind doing some programming if necessary, but in my eyes simpler is often better so I would especially like to avoid hacking anything together using a RaspberryPi or the like. More than anything, I want to avoid having to buy and string together 10 different hubs/bridges/blasters in the future to automate my home. Devices that require this new setup:

I am an iPhone user if that matters. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Help me make my world usable by my elderly mother. Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:08 PM PDT My mother has dementia. Unfortunately we have a smart tv and a soundbar in a "smart" room with all the lights and everything controlled by alexa and our phones. She can't even begin to figure out how to use this stuff. What I want to do is give her a universal remote that will control everything in an intuitive way. So here's the problem. Our tv is complicated. We have youtube tv. All she wants to be able to do is turn on the tv, press volume up, volume down and channel up, channel down and look at the guide. Unfortunately when you turn on the tv you have to select the youtube tv app and then you need to navigate that app to get to the channels So what I'm wondering is if there's some device that can receive signals from her remote and then execute the complicated things for her? Like it receives IR and then transmits a different IR signal to the TV. Or communicates with the TV through some other protocol. Ideally it should be able to query the TV about what state it is in and then execute the necessary steps to bring it to where she wants it. Like if we're currently watching youtube tv then channel up should just channel up. But if we're not watching youtubtv then it needs to open youtubetv first. Ideally I would also like to hijac some of the buttons on the remote and put labels like "netflix" on them and use that to open netflix. Any kinds of solutions like this would be amazing. Any links to resources with creative solutions would be good. One of the frustrating things for me is that I'm a programmer so ideally every time I run into a problem with any of this I just want to get access to some api and code up the logic myself. But this stuff is so "user friendly" that it doesn't seem to have that kind of pwoerful interface stuff. Does anyone know if there's some tool that would let me "code" my smart home? TV is a sony 950g [link] [comments]
IP Cameras that record to local storage Posted: 04 Jun 2020 11:21 AM PDT My in-laws have a mountain cabin with metered satelite internet. They are wanting an IP cam that will notify them of motion alerts and record on motion, however, it needs to only record to local storage (SD card ideally, or potentially a DVR drive/device) so that it doesn't use up their internet recording to the cloud. I've had good experience setting up this type of system with Amcrest outdoor PoE cameras, however I don't find their Apps or Setup process very user friendly, so if I wasn't there to setup the Camera and the Apps on each device. So I'm wondering if there is a more "dummy-proof" Camera for this situation, and what you all would reccomend. Thanks! [link] [comments]

ihome isp5 won't connect to cloud Posted: 04 Jun 2020 09:18 AM PDT Picked up one of these outlets second hand. I am able to set it up in the ihome app with no issue, however as soon as it is finished being setup, I get the warning symbol next to it in the app saying it is offline. I searched through the faq and while there are troubleshooting tips for people who cant connect to it in the app in the first place, I couldn't find anything for my issue. I doubt it is my network itself because I have replaced my router and modem since this happened and got the same issue on the new one. The plug is currently only a few feet from the router and I've tried factory reseting it a few times to readd it but the same thing happens every time, it connects, shows up in the ihome app, but has a red ! next to it and if I click for details it says not connected to cloud.
