Google Home speakers are now useless as speakers unless i pay $10/month?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 06:53 AM PDT

Hopefully im wrong, but it doesn't appear to be: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/06/youtube-music-library-transfers-your-purchased-music-is-not-welcome-here/

I bought these for a few reasons... but mostly music. One of my favorite features they killed right after i bought it (adding items to google keep/grocery list e.g. "hey google, at bananas the the grocery list" worked great until they forced it to google shopping)

But now i have decades of MP3s... including some i bought from google on GPM... and i can't play on my google home speakers using YTM.

(if you didn't hear, Google play music is going away soon, you have to migrate to YTM soon. It'll keep your songs and your playlists... but you can't use them easily w/o paying $10 month to watch youtube w/o ads and rent their music.)

but you also can't listen to your purchased songs on your purchased speakers unless you pay $10/month?!?

    someone please correct me?

otherwise it feels like a class action lawsuit in the working

Hue play and lights are SO SLOW to respond! Do I need to move the hub? Extender? Or is this just normal.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 05:53 PM PDT

I've got a bunch of sengled lights, ecobee, schlage lock, 2 hue play, 3 hue white and color lights, hue sync, hue flood light.

Everything else is fast. The hue lights though are either unresponsive or get errors or just take damn near a minute to do anything.

Especially trying to use the sync, takes a while to get going.

Do I need another hub, hue Hub, extenders? Upgrade my stock from ISP router?

Yale Lock w/ Zigbee - battery consumption

Yale Lock w/ Zigbee - battery consumption

I have the Yale YRD226 (touch screen passcode plus zigbee comms module). I've been just letting it sit on my desk near my zigbee gateway to evaluate battery voltage. Over 3 weeks, the battery level went from 1.48V to 1.34V. It's only been locked/unlocked three or four times over that period (for testing), with no touchscreen usage at all.

It might be too early to determine battery consumption. I'm wondering if anyone else has this lock with zigbee and can give feedback on battery life.

I started recording battery consumption in Influx/Grafana a week in:

    Showing 2 weeks consumption: 82% to 73%.

For reference, this is the device:

    edit: My controller is zigbee2mqtt.

Are 3 RF smart plugs a good place to get started?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 06:45 PM PDT

Hi guys, been lurking here for a while and love reading stuff here! Just moved to a new apartment, excited to take this opportunity to finally get started on my home automation journey. Obviously cautious to start small because I don't have a ton of free time and I know there's a lot to learn.

So there's this guy that wants to sell his set of 3 RF smart plugs along with an RF remote (package says 1 transmitter + 3 receivers) for $20. I have 3 wall fans in 3 different rooms which are at an awkward height and not the friendliest operating mechanism, so I thought this might be a great use case to get started.

Few things I wanted to know before I buy, and hoping you guys can help me out:

    1. Any downsides to starting with RF? I know I don't want to get into Wi-Fi devices for now (worried about privacy), but is RF okay or should I instead only look to getting Zigbee or Z-wave?
    2. The fans are in different rooms, and this smart plug set only comes with one remote. I was looking at the broadlink pro RF/IR transmitter to control all 3 fans from our phones, but I'm wondering if a single one of those will work for all rooms (no need for line of sight?) or will I need to buy one of those for each room which will become very expensive?
    3. If I go down this route, I also don't want us to only be able to operate the fans with our phones (and don't want to get voice assistants because of the whole always listening thing that scares me). I want to use a smart button of sorts (probably next to the bed) to control the fans. I know it should be possible to do something like this via HA, but is there any tutorial or resources that you can link me to where I can learn to do this?

    Thanks!

Garage door opener / controller that lets you open part way?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 04:11 PM PDT

Alright... This might be the peak of my home automation neediness.

I live in the Las Vegas desert and often "crack" the garage door to allow air to circulate. My garage has a vent, but it's high and I. need something low to let cooler air in.

My query is... Does anyone know of a garage door opener that'd let me do this automatically? Perhaps one that could swap the preset for the "closed" position.

Ideally it'd be Homekit compatible. But I'm already using Homebridge so I'm adaptable.

I'm also open to other methods of achieving this result. Thanks!

Which ecosystem is the most mature that I can do myself?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 05:16 PM PDT

    Hi Reddit,

Preparing to build a custom house on the U.S. east coast and am making plans for my smart home. We're building an 'eco-friendly' ultra tight ICF house with solar and some other bells and whistles. I am going to pay an electrician to do the panel rough in and run lines, but will do the final fixtures myself. I have done retro-fit smart house additions in the past and work in I.T. so have no aversion to learning a system or two to save myself some money in the long run. Looking to do a mix of "mood" lighting ( led strips ) and some traditional can lights.

I was originally looking at lutron Radio RA2, but I HAVE to use a distributor and it's honestly overkill for what I am wanting ( dimmers, switches, a few shades, and garage doors/alarm ). Unless someone knows some workarounds... Also hate the little buttons, never thought I would, but the rent house I am currently living in has lutron (faedra) switches with the buttons and stumbling around in the dark to press the right one is a challenge at night.

I am familiar with hubitat, homekit, and openHab. I installed, then removed a konnected.io alarm module in my previous house when it sold. I am looking for something that is rock-solid after I've set it up with an occasional troubleshooting ( 1-2 times a year ) at the maximum. ( openHAB is out. ) My wife is a technophobe and I don't want touch screens as controls as I think they are a poor UI choice in many cases. I honestly want some "mechanical" switches that can also be digitally controlled just in case the control system is lost/goes down, etc.

I have no problem hosting something locally that can run everything as it's what I will do for my security setup. In that vein, I am looking to push as little to the cloud as possible. If it needs infrastructure I'd like to host it locally. My budget is more than modest, but not lavish. I'll be happy to share my journey as we build and provide feedback on what went well for me and not. I appreciate you guys/gals taking the time to read and look forward to reading any recommendations or cautionary tales you might have!

Connecting Google Home to LG CX

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 07:22 PM PDT

I just bought an LG CX tv and a Google Home Mini (Nest) and am trying to link the two so I can control the tv with voice through google home but I can't get it to work.

I've downloaded the LG ThinQ Apple and the Google Home and Assistant apps. I've logged into the tv and all of the apps using my gmail account and linked the ThinQ app to both google apps, though it seems like this didn't do anything.

On the tv, I used google assistant and managed to be able to find the tv device on the Assistant app and added it, however, it says it can't find the tv when I try to use the app to control the tv. The google home app doesn't find the tv as a device at all despite linking to the ThinQ app.

I'm not sure what to do anymore, I've tried resetting the tv, reinstalling all the apps, re-signing in to all of the accounts to no avail. I'm in Canada and on iOS. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hacking the new Sonoff ZBBridge Zigbee to WiFi bridge with Tasmota for Home Assistant ZHA

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 04:01 AM PDT

digiblurDIY has updated his blog and a new video with a guide for step-by-step solderless flashing of Tasmota onto the new inexpensive Sonoff ZBBridge to use it as a Zigbee to WiFi Bridge for Home Assistant.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC1AEyFhmnc

Sonoff ZBBridge has a very powerful Zigbee chip inside it and this setup allows you to use it as a Zigbee Coordinator adapter for Home Assistant ZHA integration component, without using MQTT.

    https://www.digiblur.com/2020/07/how-to-use-sonoff-zigbee-bridge-with.html

Bonus is that as it is a WiFi-bridge you can place this Zigbee Coordinator in the middle of your house for best possible reception, away from your Home Assistant computer and other devices that can cause signal interference.

Technical information: Just like any Sonoff device you do need a USB-to-TTL Adapter (serial-flasher) and a few smaller Breadboard/Dupont pin-cables (jumper-wires) to flash Tasmota. Once you also flashed Tasmota-ZBBridge firmware it will act as a serial-passthrough WiFi-bridge for the Zigbee-chip inside it which Home Assistant's ZHA integration component can then connect to and control natively as if it was connected as a local adapter.

Smart blinds and angled roof windows: is it possible?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 09:18 AM PDT

I'm looking to add Ikea Fyrtur (or similar) blinds to some windows that are at an angle in the roof. Is this at all possible? I suppose I would need some sort of guide rails and perhaps extra cord to make sure the blinds go up and down by something other than gravity. Who has attempted this before?

Confused about smart garage door openers.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 06:56 PM PDT

    Hey everyone.

So I've been searching this sub for some info on smart garage doors.
I have a flip open door that needs an opener and I want to be able to use Google Assist with it.

But am I wrong in seeing that they don't just make smart openers now? You have to buy all these DIY boards and wires to convert your normal opener into a smart one?

Looking for feedback from Blindsgalore Select Shade owners

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 12:03 PM PDT

So I'm in need to replace my of my homes window treatments and am considering Blindsgalore's Select cellular shade product line. Looks like integration works well using the NEO Smart Blinds Hub and Home Assistant, so that's a relief.

What I'm looking for is any sort of audio/video clips that detail how loud the motors are on these products. I've seen one or two videos of folks with roller shades, large ones to be exact with a heavy load, where there is a noticeable whine coming from the motors.

Hoping another member can share their experience and/or any media that would derail the noise level of Blindsgalore Select shades products.

Cree Connected bulbs won't Dim with Alexa

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 03:18 PM PDT

Like the title says, I can't get my Cree Connected bulbs to dim using alexa. I got them paired up with my Hue, one at a time, and the Hue app has no problem dimming them, however Alexa sees them as "On/Off" lights and won't dim them. It even has them named "Dimmable light 1", Dimmable light 2", etc. What am I doing wrong?

I'm planning on getting the Nest Hello and I saw that it has a monthly subscription for additional functions. As someone from an unsupported country (the Philippines), will I still be able to use it without subscribing to Nest Aware? And will I still be able to subscribe to Nest Aware despite not being in a supported country?

led light stips under deck help

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 10:42 AM PDT

Looking to add led light strips under my deck. Ill be running approx 50ft (15.25M)

    I have these I thought I would give a try. * Power Dissipation: 14.4W/M* Maximum Output Power: 72W . https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IQOV13G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They should draw just under 220 watts if their numbers and my calc are right. im going to have 3 sections of approx 5m: (5x14.4)÷12= 6 amp rated power supply per section.

A couple Im looking at are : https://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Transformer-Voltage-3-Prong-Outdoor/dp/B07HVRQFX5/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=waterproof+12v+led+power+supply+200w&qid=1597076113&sr=8-3

or this one which is more then enough power but higher amps: https://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Transformer-Voltage-3-Prong-Computer/dp/B07Y61R8SR/ref=sr_1_12?dchild=1&keywords=waterproof+12v+led+power+supply&qid=1597074101&sr=8-12

    or this: https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/power-supplies/led-switching-power-supply-diodedrive-series-60w-240w-enclosed-power-supply-12v/5678/13272/

Ill be using a zigbee controller to control the light strips. https://www.amazon.com/GLEDOPTO-Controller-Compatible-SmartThings-Lightify/dp/B07R32CS17/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=gledopto&qid=1597081112&sr=8-1

Ill also be adding some 12v led landscape lights, 15 at 1w each off the power supply. So wattage wise I think I should be good.

I have a couple questions. First, are the power supplies good choices to work?

Second I need more help with. Im thinking that with a 200 watt power supply Ill need to run 12 gauge minimum wire from the power supply to the Gledopto controller. Ir doesnt look like the Gledopto controller would be able to accept that thick of a wire? What are my options for powering the controller?

Appreciate any help I can get, Thanks

3 gang switch replacement with smart switch

    Hi,

    I'm new to this...

So i have a 3 gang switch that turn on different lights at different positions.

    3 gang switches.

So, I would like to know what smart light switches are compatible and, if I would only have to replace one switch and control all the lights that end in the switch or have one switch for each separate light?

    Would greatly appreciate your help.

Robo vacuums: Eufy 15c Max or Roborock S4?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 08:48 AM PDT

So I live in a relatively small single floor 2-bed 2-bath apartment, mostly low-ish carpet with some bathrooms with tiled floors with mats, no pets. I am pretty lazy and hate sweeping, but also love clean floors. Yesterday I bought my first smart vacuum, a Eufy 15c Max, since it was on sale for $200 and had very positive reviews. Right off the bat, I was quite impressed by it (compared to my parents' early 2000s Roomba when I was a kid, which SUCKED...or should I say, didnt really suck at all heheheh)

I really like the ability to control it with my phone, and love the notifications when there's an error, and overall it seems to work quite well. That said, it has already gotten stuck on the dining room chairs several times, and it clearly has no mapping or any idea where it is going. There isnt a particularly good spot anywhere in my apartment to place the dock that is out in the open for the vacuum to easily "see" it, so when it is done running it takes a long time to find the dock, if ever. I also kinda wish it could clean specifically near the kitchen/dining table when requested, since the most food crumbs always gather there, and also make it not go under the table where it gets stuck in the chair legs.

I have noticed a lot of people on here talk about the Roborock S4 being very good, but at $400 it is literally twice the price of this Eufy. It looks like the only notable difference between them is mapping, so it should (?) be able to return the base more easily and also avoid under the table if I tell it to, as well as only clean the dining room (for example) if asked.

I am pretty cheap most of the time...my question is, is that S4 really worth twice the cost of the Eufy just for mapping? Or should I just keep the Eufy and continue to use it given my current living space? Admittedly I have only had it for a day, so I haven't spent a super long time with it yet.

EDIT: As I said, most of my apartment is carpeted. Its not a very deep carpet, but not exactly super low pile either. I have heard that the S4 sometimes has issues with carpets.
