Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:02 PM PDT I'm wondering if anyone has had a larger system with only newer z-wave switches like Inovelli Red series or the newer Zooz switches and found it in any way unreliable and then moved to Lutron Caseta. I have a system with about 30 switches and dimmers from Dragon Tech, Homeseer, and one Zooz and I use them with Home Assistant and find everything but the zooz switch to be sometimes very slow to respond, and not reflect their current state. So I'm wondering if my issues are more likely from using older/not as good devices or if it's just z-wave. I'm building a new house and trying to decide if I should stick with z-wave or switch to Caseta. Everything I've read about caseta people say they're rock-solid reliable. I don't love how the switches look and the device limit might be a problem for me, but I guess I could do two hubs if needed. I guess I'm wondering is if anyone has experience with the newer zwave devices and Caseta and if they can compare or if I need to go with the the more expensive devices that I don't like the look of as much in order to get true reliability. Turn on lights based on temperature with Nest thermostat Posted: 09 Aug 2020 02:53 PM PDT Can I use my Nest thermostat to turn on/off a Lutron Caseta switch based on outside temperature? I'm putting a vivarium on my outdoor covered patio and I'd like to have the heat lamps turn on/off automatically based on the outside temperature. [link] [comments]
What are the best LED light strips that I can get? Posted: 10 Aug 2020 12:23 AM PDT I'm trying to get more of them from my room and the ones I currently have which are Hitlight are amazing and works beautifully with my Alexa but I want to line my ceiling around my room now. What's the best light strips I can get that'll both sync with music and also connect to alexa? [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Aug 2020 11:00 PM PDT Moving into a new house and looking into setting up a VPN router. Anyone have any issues when using one with home automation? I use Echos and was wondering if the different GPS info the VPN would give would matter or if all the suggestions the Echos give go based off your home address you input on the app. [link] [comments]
Smart bulbs/lights or smart switches? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:52 PM PDT I will be fixing the lighting in my condo unit with smart stuff, should I replace them all with smart bulbs/lights, or should I just keep the current lights and buy smart switches? [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:17 PM PDT We have a really old Roomba and would like to update to something new. There are so many brands and newer technologies out now, I don't know what to pick. We have a combination of tile and carpet and have pets (dog and cats). What is a good option if my budget is up to $600? [link] [comments]
Nest Protect won't send notifications Posted: 09 Aug 2020 09:37 PM PDT I cut the power to all 3 of my wired Nest Protect devices (2nd gen). All 3 of them did not show the yellow ring light, all 3 of them did not speak out to inform me about an outage, and none of my mobile devices running the Nest app sent me any notification (my internet is still up and running). When I open the Nest app, it tells me there's a power outage. So why didn't the app send a push notification if it knew? And why didn't any of my Protects inform me of the issue? Recommendations for "smart" 0-10V controller for 2'x2' LED Panels? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 03:10 PM PDT I am planning to swap out old florescent fixtures in a basement home theater in an existing 2'x2' drop ceiling grid. I'm planning for a 3-zone dimmable solution. As a quick test, I tried out canless 6" recessed LED fixtures and 2'x2' LED panels. The ceiling is relatively low so canless, recessed LEDs are too dazzling (i.e. too much light from too small of a space so you get spots in your vision). The light from LED panels are much more diffuse and pleasant, but they all seem to require 0-10v dimming. At the moment, the only "smart" 0-10V control I can find is the Lutron LMJ-5T-DV-B for ~$150ea (yikes).

Posted: 09 Aug 2020 09:00 PM PDT I have a dual band wifi mesh wifi router already, Netgear Orbi. Would getting a separate wifi hub for my smart home objects be overkill? If not, which one is best and someone please tell me the best way to set it up in my system. [link] [comments]

AliExpress recommendations for zignee/zwave sensors? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:18 PM PDT When I started this home automation journey I bought some SmartThings sensors and outlets but now it seems those are overpriced compared to what's available on AliExpress Anyone have recommendations for a reliable brand(s) or items if I need more door sensors, motion sensors, temperature sensors and smart outlets? I don't have a preference of zwave or zigbee. Need them to integrate with SmartThings as mentioned. [link] [comments]
August Wifi Smart Lock (4th gen) + Google Nest Wifi (setup issues) Posted: 09 Aug 2020 02:27 PM PDT Hi, I just ordered the 4th Gen August WiFi Smart Lock from Amazon and physically installed it with no issues at all (its insanely easy). At the end of the setup flow, the app attempts to connect to your wifi network. In my apartment I'm using a mesh network via Google Nest Wifi (router + two access points). In the app, August detects three identical SSIDs for my network (one for the main router + the two access points?). The main router is maybe 10 feet from the lock which I assume corresponds to the strongest signal of the three SSIDs shown in the UI (note to August product managers: this isn't the best UX). I was initially able to connect but in the last screen the app prompts to test signal strength. This flow didn't work at all. It seems as though the device is struggling to deal with the presence of 5Ghz at least during the setup and possibly after the fact (I can't tell). Google Nest Wifi doesn't have a "turn off 5Ghz" band temporarily and the August device is equally not up to the task. I have multiple IoT smart devices at home on this network (TP-Link Kasa, Hue, etc). All deal with the additional band flawlessly. Any tips on how to handle this? I'm extremely reluctant to call August support b/c they will likely just tell me unhelpful things like "move closer to the router" etc (the lock is 10 ft from the router with nothing obstructing b/w them). Reviews on Amazon already mention this issue so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised but I'm still incredibly disappointed and will likely just return it unless August can pull it together here. The physical aspect of the device is fantastic but without the "smart" component its no better than the back-plate knob it replaced. [link] [comments]
extension cords that looks nice to run along a wall? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 12:08 PM PDT I have a storage thing over the toilet, and wanted to put a Amazon Echo there. But the power outlet in the bathroom is by the door/sink, so I'll need to run an extension cord. Is there a good way of doing that? I have ugly thick brown extension cords, but running that along the wall is pretty ugly. Extension cords have to be rated above the trip limit of circuit breakers, so I think they're all rated for at least 10A, which makes the minimum thickness pretty thick. [link] [comments]

Looking for beta testers for a new home inventory management system (Skill & App) Posted: 09 Aug 2020 05:11 AM PDT Over the past three months, we, at eKitchen, have worked extensively to develop an Alexa Skill that helps households to save money and manage their home inventory through a unique voice interface. eKitchen is currently in the final development phase of private Beta, and here is how you can support us - we're looking for Beta testers to optimize the product before its official launch. If you want to become a Beta tester simply fill out this form: https://mailchi.mp/a43fbacb6174/ekitchen-beta-version In a nutshell, the system allows households to: -Save more time with an auto-generated grocery list that is sent to their email when it's time restock. All this good can be controlled from your Alexa app when you're out, or at home using simple voice commands such as: "Alexa, how many bananas do I have in my kitchen?"🍌 Appreciate your support! Moving from a small apartment where I have two TPLink sockets and Alexa setup and moving to a 3000 sqft home that I would like to automate. What system do you all recommend? Looking for help automating a dumb apartment buzzer Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:39 PM PDT Hello folks, I have this particular buzzer system in our apartment unit: I'm looking to automate it so that I get a notification on my phone when someone buzzes up, and so I can open the door from my phone. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Edit: IS-489 is the mircom model. [link] [comments]
Nest doorbell even with Ring Alarm with Cameras? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:28 PM PDT I have Ring security alarm with couple Ring indoor/outdoor cameras (no doorbell). But I received a gift of Nest Hello recently and was wondering if it would be recommended to switch to Ring doorbell just to integrate everything? But I actually have Google home hub & hub max with couple nest minis around the house, so I figure I would benefit from the doorbell alerting on those screens. I should've stuck with one ecosystem from the beginning, but Nest alarm was just too expensive so I went with Ring alarm. And I also heard nest hello is so much better than ring. And I also don't plan on paying for Nest Aware since I already pay $100/year for Ring Protect Plus, so Nest hello would just be for live use which I'm fine with. I'm not really worried about stealing packages and I have a Ring camera out in my driveway. Any thoughts on this? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Recommendations for basic setup (moving from Wemo's) Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:30 AM PDT Hello all, Ive been using Wemo's for a while now, but am getting frustrated with them and am looking to move to something better/easier to work with. I don't have very complex routines, mostly turning lights on and off at different times. I have an Alexa, ring, and an ecobee as well. Any recommendations on switches and plugs (in wall ones are OK to, I can do wiring), and maybe dimmers to use? I am thinking of z-wave so they could connect to the ring which I already have, but am open to other options. I don't want to get caught with a bunch of devices that I'll have to replace if I get rid of ring or they make changes to what's compatible with them. (I got all the Wemo's because I started with two plugs in an apartment and because I didn't want to get more apps, added more when I moved to a house) [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Aug 2020 12:22 PM PDT Today I installed a new controller, I had formerly been using Nexx and it did everything that a smart controller might be expected to, but the geofencing detection for auto opening was in Beta and frankly hardly ever worked for me. I was disappointed because that's really the only reason I had for installing anything on my garage door. So after a long time arguing with myself about trying something new today I installed a Tailwind IQ3 system from Canada. We're an iOS household so I had to buy little beacons for each vehicle in addition to the base hardware. Apparently Android users won't require those beacons and that could save about $40US. Short term review; instal was WAY more involved than simply plugging in a device like Nexx. It uses a wired sensor on the door (magnetic reed switch) and what appears to be a combination of Bluetooth and GPS input from your phone via the app. I was pleasantly surprised to find they also offer an app for our Apple Watches, probably not necessary but kind of cool, and a few other features I didn't expect. They offer a way to "partial open" the garage door based in millisecond delays between pulses which is actually a really handy feature down here in Texas where summer time temps can approach 150° in the garage. Looking forward to longer term reviewing but so far I'm very happy. The one thing I wanted out of my garage was for it to magically see me coming and open without lifting a finger. This system seems actually capable of doing that. Pretty damn cool if you ask me. [link] [comments] |
