How I got motion sensor lights in our bathroom working beautifully

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 05:22 AM PDT

I originally had a standard Philips Hue light and motion sensor set up, but there were a couple of problems.

The extractor fan in our bathroom was wired to turn on when the light switch was turned on. I couldn't leave the light switch turned on for the Hue bulb as the extractor fan would stay on throughout the night.

I replaced the extractor fan with one that had its own motion sensor, and now it runs completely independently of the light switch, meaning it can be left switched on! The job took about an hour, but wasn't much harder than replacing a light switch. (As a bonus the new fan is more quiet than the old one).

Then there were issues with the motion sensor placement. Due to our layout, whenever it was placed near the shower, it would also trigger when someone walked past the bathroom door, annoyingly switching the light on for at least a couple of mins.

I fixed this by adding an Eve door sensor, and moving the motion sensor so it would only trigger after someone walked into the room.

I used the more advanced Shortcut in the Apple Home app to set up the following automation:

When motion detected, turn on the light.

When no motion detected, if the door is open, turn off the light.

When no motion detected, if the door is closed, do nothing (leaving the light on).

This works much better now in that there's no more "hand waving" to get the light to stay on when you're in the bathroom. It simply turns on when you walk in, and stays on while the door is closed.

It also means there's no need for a timer as as soon as the motion sensor stops detecting motion, it turns off the light if the door is open - perfect for quickly nipping in and out.

Can I re-pair Ikea lights to an ikea hub If i have paired them with Hue?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:49 PM PDT

    Hi,

I (perhaps foolishly) bought a bunch of Ikea Tradfri light and paired them to my Philiips Hue hub. The issue with them is that they do not respond to brightness from Hue scene commands, so they are, essentially useless..

I have read that if used via the Ikea hub, you can get them to work fine via HA.

So does, anyone one know if I can pair them to the Ikea hub if they've already been used with the Phillips Hub?

    Thx

Do Tuya Smart plugs spoil extremely quickly?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 12:41 AM PDT

I bought 2 BSD29 plugs earlier this year, and they have both spoiled after about 3 months of usage. Really frustrating as I don't use them much yet they seem so break so easily.

    Explain ambilight to me

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:57 PM PDT

My understanding of ambilight is it's a string of addressable LEDs placed behind a TV that make it look more like a lens with brightness and colors around the tv aligning with what you can clearly see inside the border. The would have to a have a controller and something to send it commands. An ESP8266 or ESP32 with some dotstars could cover the first requirement, but what about the second? Is there something that watches the stream going to the TVs HDMI port, holds for a bit due to the processing delay of the tv, then tells the controller what LEDs should change to what? Or is this something that can have Plex or kodi handle, knowing what to send to controller based on what the client is sending to the tv?

Basically, if we have an appleTV or PS4 playing content, how would the LEDs know when to change? What tells them what to change to?

additionally, could other lights in the room change too? Like, if the whole screen flashes bright for an explosion, could other lights in the room go to full brightness for the duration of that white frame?

Start Harmony activity when telling Google Home "play (movie) on Shield"?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:45 PM PDT

When I tell google to watch a movie, it opens the movie on Netflix on my NVIDIA Shield TV. However, the TV might not be turned on so I want Harmony to also go to the correct activity. I've tried using Home Assistant by creating an automation that triggers when the Shield opens Netflix and as a result it will turn on the Shield activity. But when Harmony turns on the Shield activity, it automatically goes to the home screen of the Shield TV. This essentially means that now whenever I open Netflix, it will go back to the main menu. So yeah, pretty useless automation.

There are a few ways to solve this, but I'm not sure if any of them are actually possible.

    1. Stop Harmony or the Shield from going to the main menu when opening an activity.
    2. Leave Shield always on and don't power on Shield during activity's start sequence, but I can't remove the "power on shield" step from the start sequence and I'm not sure if there's another way of doing that.
    3. Start the activity BEFORE opening Netflix, but I doubt I can somehow configure Google Assistant to do this.

Any ideas on how to solve this issue? Maybe some other suggestions?

Those who have went from HomeKit to Google Home. How was the transition? I want to use Googles nest products but I unfortunately none of them connect to HomeKit. I might just use two separate apps but I dont know yet.

Gday all, need someone who is familiar with the google home mini and assistant.

I've had my mini for almost two years now and never had an issue. I've set up a routine for putting my 18month old down to sleep in her room. When I say "hey google, it's time for bed" it sets th
