Does this exist? Can I build it? A "smart window" insert

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 07:23 AM PDT

Sometimes I want my air conditioners running. Sometimes I want my windows open for a cross breeze. Is there a device I can place in my windows, similar in form to a window fan or AC unit, that has louvers or another mechanism that can be opened or close electronically?

A "smart window fan" with louvers that open/close when on/off would also be interesting.

Ideally this device would also be made out of a transparent/translucent material.

What's an easy way to physically trigger playing of WWE YouTube videos on a chromecast enabled TV?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 12:23 AM PDT

Why I am trying to build this:

A family member with autism is having a tough time quarantining at home. His absolute favorite thing to do is watch WWE on YouTube. But he cannot learn to navigate to the YouTube app and find the video he likes. Voice commands don't work due to a speech disability and the fact that he doesn't speak English. The people staying with him also don't know how to use a Smart TV.

Is there some way to have a physical button trigger the playing of this video?

I would also like to know if you guys know of easier solutions

TV in question is a SONY Bravia with built in chromecast
I have a hobbyist level knowledge on how to use the ESP32 board and wiring up a circuit.
But I cannot figure out the software configuration to go from

Button Press → Play a video from a channel (WWE in this case) on the TV.

Thanks for all your help and time.

ZigBee in-wall light switch controller recommendations.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 04:53 PM PDT

    Hi Guys,

I'm relatively new to the home automation scene, and I'm speccing out the stack for my home and need some advice.

I've purchased some Hue bulbs (with a bridge) for room and floor lamps, but for my ceiling lights I want to also be able to on/off/dim using my chosen voice assistants.

I had come across a module that seemed perfect based on a design by Sunricher which are built for OEMs like Samotech.

The module seemed perfect because: - 230V compatible - ZigBee protocol synced with Hue - Dimmable - Inexpensive (relatively) - Allowed me to use existing standard wall switches - Small enough to fit in a single width UK/Ireland back box for a wall switch

The problem being that it actually requires a push (or momentary switch) or a double toggle of a standard on/off switch to work properly which really isn't going to sit well with the other parties living in the house.

Can anyone make a recommendation for one that fits the above but will work with a standard on/off switch and use the Zigbee protocol. I'm willing to replace the the rocker switches to get it to function properly but just not willing to tolerate push button switches.

I'm quite keen on the Zigbee kit integrating with Hue because it integrates well with HomeKit.

I don't know if it's important but all the lights and switches have a neutral wire available.

    Dog escape alarm?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 08:01 PM PDT

Is there a such thing as a device that I could attach to my dog's collar, that was somehow programmed with a geofence, such that when my dog gets out and crosses that boundary, I get an alarm?

Make an old Fan Coil unit smarter?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 07:28 PM PDT

Condo living, older building that has 2 pipe Fan Coil units with old-school rheostat (line voltage) to control the fan speed. Swapped the rheostat with a Kasa HS220 WiFi dimmer and seems to be working well. Next step is to see if there is a way to link a Nest temp sensor (or other device) to control the fan dimmer switch. Anyone have thoughts on if this is possible? Would like to keep controlling all this through google home if possible. I'm open to ideas.

Can't get GE/Jasco Z-Wave Switch to Connect to SmartThings Hub

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 10:49 AM PDT

A while ago I upgraded to a new smartthings hub so that I could use it over wifi. Transitioning all of my devices is over was may more hassle than I anticipated but they all moved over except one, a GE 14296 dimmer switch. It isn't attached to a light that we use that often so I have mostly just lived with it. I am able to exclude the device from the new hub and it picks it up instantly when I am in exclude mode and toggle the switch on it's just that when I try to add the switch it can't see it. The manual says that 3 up and 3 down toggles will reset it but the hub still doesn't see it after doing that procedure. Any other ideas?

    Alexa vs. 1990's Radio Shack

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 06:00 PM PDT

I posted this on /r/alexa and didn't have much luck.

In the early 1990's I set up an X10 system that would sound a bell when someone drove up my driveway from either of two motion detectors, and if it was dark out it would turn on 4 floodlights and an inside light for about 15 Min.

I bought an Echo Plus, 2 motion detecting cameras, 4 smart light switches and a smart light bulb. I started trying to make a routine to replace my X10. I can have the echo make a sound and turn the lights on when there is motion, but I can not add a second trigger to include the "if it is dark" to the equation.

I have been googling and have found a couple of VERY complicated ways using to or three other programs and hops to the internet and back to make this work, but nothing simple, that might work when the internet is down.

Reolink NVR - local IP addresses

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 02:02 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I searched this topic, but couldn't find this specific scenario. I just purchased an 8CH NVR from Reolink with 4 IP cameras. I have the NVR plugged in to my switch in a dedicated security VLAN. My router assigned the NVR the correct IP no problem, however, I noticed that the four cameras plugged in directly to the NVR have a completely different subnet in the 172 range. Is it normal for the NVR to hand out its own local IPs instead of having my router/DHCP do it?

I also cannot login to each individual camera on the network because of this. Again, it does sound like how this NVR/camera configuration should work I just wanted to make sure.

Recommendation for wired porch light with hub capable motion sensor?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 05:36 PM PDT

Looking to upgrade some porch lights. The existing ones I have are traditional motion sensors, but lack the manual override. Since I'd like to wire in more automation I've been looking for a porch light that is controllable and sends motion events to a hub using zwave / zigbee.

    Some use cases are:

    • If one light detects motion, turn on other lights and send motion alert to cameras.

    • Ability to override all lights.

    • Trigger lights based on other events.

Looking for a sensor and light combo as I'd like to avoid separate battery powered external sensors.

Need help on finding a Zwave 4 way smart switch with compatibility with LED fixtures

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 05:32 PM PDT

Without getting into a huge story, I tried Zooz ZEN27 v2.0 and v3.0 smart dimmers and it's just not working right for me. The rest of my house is wired with Zooz Dimmers and switches and they're working great but this particular set of fixtures isn't. I've spent way too much on electricians looking at this, the support at Zooz is great, but I'm giving up on them for this particular circuit.

Now onto the question: It's a 4 way, it has two of these fixtures: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Commercial-Electric-13-in-Oil-Rubbed-Bronze-Color-Changing-LED-Ceiling-Flush-Mount-2-Pack-JJU3011L-2-ORB/305607241

What I'm seeing is that Lutron seems to be compatible, but I would need one of these https://www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-Decora-Smart-600-Watt-Single-Pole-Dimmer-with-Z-Wave-Technology-White-R52-DZ6HD-2RW/310275542 and two of these https://www.amazon.com/Leviton-DD00R-DLZ-120VAC-Digital-Matching/dp/B01AFU1KOY

Or should I try GE? What would I get with GE?

Main gist is that it has to be 4 way compatible, and I would prefer it to be z-wave instead of wifi.

Thanks for the help in advance.

    Schlage encode water damage?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 05:06 PM PDT

I've gone thought two encodes now and both have had "moisture" damage. Schlage sends me replacements but they they don't sale a gasket or anything to make sure moisture doesn't get in to the electronics. I love the encode and it's been amazing untill it rains and then gets hot. Anyone else have this problem? Or have a solution?

Need a not-so-smart light switch with a remote control - does it exist?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 04:52 PM PDT

Hi! Apologies in advance, since this question only barely /r/homeautomation, but I'm not sure where else to post it. I'm looking for a light switch with a simple wireless remote. It doesn't have to be smart, or work with Alexa / Google Home. There are plenty of plugin outlets (Etekcity Remote Control Outlet Wireless Remote Light Switch being a good example). I'm looking for the same concept, only as a built-in light switch. Does that exist? Also, if there's a better subreddit to ask, please let me know!

TP Link LED Strip won't Turn On or Off with Google Home

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 04:51 PM PDT

Hi! Has anyone else had this issue where the TP Link LED Strip KL430 cannot be turned on or off via Google Assistant? I can adjust the brightness or color, but not toggle on/off. I contacted both TP Link/Kasa and Google, and they said it was a known bug on Google's side. From what I can tell, this bug has been going on for five months now without resolution. Has anyone had this issue and found a workaround? If not, I'm wondering if I should return this LED strip and go with the LIFX one.

More info on the bug here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/thread/32728723?hl=en

Getting Original Amazon Dash Buttons Working

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 03:32 PM PDT

I have several of what I think are the original run of Amazon Dash Buttons. They are Firmware 20014520, model number JK29LP. I have one that I had connected previously when I first got it (without selecting a product), and several that had never even been turned on. I'm unable to get them to work.

Using the 192.168.0.1/?amzn_ssid..... turns the flashing blue light off and nothing else. I think this is because its supposed to try to get a token or something from Amazon, and those servers are gone so it doesn't get anything and deletes the wifi settings.

Using the sound file to hack the device just makes it do three quick flashes, three times and then nothing.

Anyone have experience with these original buttons or any other ideas on how I can get them to work? All I need is for them to hit an endpoint in any way possible.

Edit: I apparently have two types of devices (bought at the same time, so not sure why they are different).

One is JK29LP. On that one, when I connect to it in AP mode, it shows me a page with the Serial Number, MAC, and Firmware. The firmware is 20014520. This one does the flashing red thing when I play the sound file hack.

The other one is JK76PL. On that one, connecting to it in AP mode shows a page where i can select an SSID and enter a password. It does not show any other info. If I view source, I can see a few hidden fields. Serial number, MAC, nonce, and firmware. MAC is not right (this one is showing me "%F0%27-%09%B5-"). Firmware is "v0.9.178". That one just shows solid red for a few seconds when I play the sound file hack.

Looking for smart plug that works with Apple and large adapter with reset/test switches

Any recommendations for a smart plug that works with Siri but also has to work on a pool filter/pump that has a reset/test switch on it.

I recently tried the VOCOlinc and it worked great out of the box on a Lamp I tested it on but won't work with this other plug adapter that the pump uses.

    Pairing tradfri GU10 to conbee...

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 01:47 PM PDT

Does anyone have any tips on doing this? I've been banging my head over it for hours now. Some bulbs connect fine after toggling 8 times with a basic search in Phoscon but others just don't connect at all. I've tried different numbers of on/off at different intervals and even had the bulbs flash but they just won't connect. Have I got a dodgy set or is it really this difficult?
