What are your thoughts about farm automation (smart farming)?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 11:47 AM PDT

I've been reading and researching a lot about smart farming and found it interesting and useful. The problem is I'm confused if it's still considered as permaculture because I'm uncertain if it's a good investment. Your opinions and recommendations will be highly appreciated. Thank you :)

Good way to track if people are in a room?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 06:44 PM PDT

We have about 10 study rooms and would like to track how often people use the rooms. Are there anything software+hardware products out there that help with this? What type of devices are these called?

The idea is that these would be able to connect to a computer so I can track and analyze the data

Are there any zigbee, zwave, or wifi carbon monoxide detectors that plug in?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 08:49 PM PDT

Have a battery powered carbon monoxide detector that has reached the 7 year mark and is "End of life", which means the other is soon to follow.

The only zwave one that I've found (https://www.amazon.com/First-Alert-Detector-Carbon-Monoxide/dp/B00KMHXFAI?th=1) is battery only - and it does combo smoke and carbon monoxide. Was thinking that I wouldn't have a problem replacing my smoke detectors with something like this, but I'd rather it plug in. I surely don't need a smoke detector RIGHT NEXT to my existing smoke detector (that's where the carbon monoxide detector is right now).

Internet outage detector/corrector idea -- Can I get some feedback?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 11:04 AM PDT

    Problem

Occasionally I experience inexplicable WAN outages and have to do a hard reset on the ISP-supplied equipment to bring it back online. ETA: The supplied hardware is an LTE radio and my ISP's recommended fix is to kill the power for a full minute if it and when it craps out.

    Current Solution

    1. "Dad, the connection's down again!"

    2. Go to the server/laundry room and pull the power cord for the ISP-supplied hardware for approx. 1 - 2 minutes.

    3. Wait approx. 2 - 3 minutes for the connection to restore.

    4. Repeat steps 2 - 3 until success.

    5. Die a little more inside.

    Proposed Solution

    1. ISP-supplied hardware is powered via a smart plug

    2. A Raspberry Pi with a Zigbee/Z-wave dongle runs a cron job that pings an external server (e.g. 1.1.1.1) every 5 - 10 minutes to confirm connectivity.

    3. If a ping fails wait 10 - 20 seconds and try again.

    4. If the second ping fails, send the signal to power down the ISP-supplied hardware via zigpy or python-openzwave.

    5. Wait 1 - 2 minutes and bring the ISP-supplied hardware back up.

    6. Send a ping and go back to sleep if success, repeat steps 4 - 5 otherwise.

    Thoughts and Questions

Is there a more elegant or effective way to accomplish this? I'm still new enough to automation that I don't have a complete idea of what's possible yet. The solution above is based on my current knowledge of automation, which is approximately equivalent to that of a duck.

Are there any potential issues I may have overlooked? I am aware that this is slower than waiting for my kids to tell me there's a problem the second things go down but I like the idea of not having to get up to fix it anymore. Buuut... any suggestions on how I could make this solution more responsive would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for a water proof smart door lock

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 01:21 PM PDT

I live in the desert so I need a lock that handle heat and rain. The issue is that this will be on my back gate for my carport.

I had a regular electronic deadbolt but it only lasted a little over a year before the locking mechanism failed.

    Do I have any options?

Pella Window and Door integrated security sensors

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:29 AM PDT

Has anyone ever integrated the sensors you can get with Pella products with a home automation platform? We are really trying to avoid putting fugly sensors on all our windows and doors for our remodel in the spring. It looks like you use this ALULA translator/bridge to find them all and I assume that would be connected to whatever smarthome I can choose. Here is an info sheet on that product: https://content.pella.com/cs/groups/public/documents/document/mhat/mdu3/~edisp/p-057601.pdf

    Thanks for your comments!

How can I update Hue Bridge without wifi?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 06:04 PM PDT

I need to update the bridge without wifi, is there a way to do this?

So to make a long story short, my apartment complex is student living. This means there is communal wifi and I cannot get an ethernet directly to the router to plug into the bridge. I instead have a small travel router that mimics my wifi while being "on" that wifi. This allows me to connect to it and have access to my bridge.

However, this is the part that gets annoying. The travel router does not actually connect me to the internet. I set it up so that it can extend the signal but since its so small and weak I literally cannot use the wifi. Unfortunately, I have an update available for the bridge and now I cannot update it through the app since I have to be connected to my travel router to connect to the bridge to update.

Is there a way to download the update on my computer and update the bridge with that or something? Is there another way around this? How can I actually get wifi on the travel router? For context, the router is a TP-Link (mn: TL-WR802N).

TL;DR: I have to be connected to a router that doesn't actually provide me with an internet connection to update my hue bridge. The update straight up doesn't load, is there a way around this?

    Power Injecting WS2812B LED Strip

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:43 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I have 11 WS2812B LED strips I plan to Daisy chain around my house as permanent Christmas lights. I am wondering what the best way is to inject power into them?

The WS2812B come with an extra 2 wire that is supposed to be for power injection. Would I be able to use this cable to inject at the end/beginning of each strip? I would also run a new direct power feed at the half way point.

Open to any wiring suggestions, thanks!

    Fan remote light switch

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:32 PM PDT

Remote for fan and light, wall switch

So I am looking to reddit for help. I currently have the following fan in my house.

    https://www.homedepot.com/p/Home-Decorators-Collection-Kensgrove-54-in-Integrated-LED-Brushed-Nickel-Ceiling-Fan-with-Light-and-Remote-Control-YG493A-BN/303704291

Its a great fan, problem is it only works via the remote that came with it. I have one switch on the wall that basically supplies power, but all the controls for it are on the remote. So what I am looking for is a universal remote that I would wire into where the light switch goes, but controls the fan and the light via a remote signal. I have found things similiar but they all use their own reciever that you have to wire into the fan, where I am pretty sure the ones on my fan are hardwired in. Worst case scenario i buy holders to keep the remote near the light switch, but i would like a switch if possible. Does anyone have any ideas.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Have to replace 6 malfunctioning zwave wall switches. What brands/models are people happy with?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:51 AM PDT

    About 5 years ago I installed a bunch of Linear/Nortek/Gocontrol WD500Z-1.

Six of them are malfunctioning. Some have intermittent buzzing, some permanent, some make noise when other zwave device is being controlled, and so on, so I'd like to move away from that brand.

What wall mounted switches are working as expected over time?

    SmartThings and WiFi devices

    Hi all,

I want to integrate my WiFi outlets so I can control them through SmartThings. I have tried Smart Life and Globe (those are the two apps I can control the WiFi outlets with). Is there any other app that lets me control those WiFi outlets and integrate with SmartThings?

    These are the ones: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CVH7WPD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    One-Side Keyless "Smart" Deadbolt

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 12:55 PM PDT

I want to install a one-sided (the lock is visible only on one side of the door) smart lock. Basically just a deadbolt that I can control remotely. I've looked but all of the smart deadbolts seem to have both an interior and exterior piece (2 pieces) in the assembly. Does such a product exist?

What are my options here for an in-wall smart thermostat?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 12:19 PM PDT

I want to replace my old thermostat with something I can control through HA. This is how my current one looks: https://imgur.com/a/hBqnfgX

Ideally, I want something completely in-wall, invisible from the outside and only controller through Home Assistant. I was eyeing the sonoff switch (https://www.itead.cc/smart-home/sonoff-sv.html), but obviously won't work with a live wire thermostat. Any suggestions?

Having a problem with connecting my Feit Electric Wi-Fi Bulbs

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 11:17 AM PDT

Hey all, just got my first set of smart bulbs. They're a three-pack Feit Electric brand tunable white and color changing bulbs I got from Lowe's. No matter what I do, my phone just does not want to play nice with these bulbs. I know for a fact I'm on a 2.4ghz network, and when I attempt to connect my bulbs, about 10-15% into the connecting process, all three bulbs stop flickering, so I know they're being detected, but there's something else screwing the whole thing up. Is there anything I'm missing?

    Roller Shade Hell

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 10:38 AM PDT

I purchased the Brilliant home control and would like to create a link to that to control roller shades. I have not purchased any shades yet. All the companies I've spoke with about the shades are trying to charge $500+ for a wifi control / app set up that I don't think I need. I want to just put the shades on a switch that will roll them up or down, and then separately just control it with a smart switch (Wemo, Lutron, Levitron, whatever). This seems like a far better option. For some reason this just isn't clicking with anybody I'm talking to. Am I crazy to think this should be fairly straightforward?

Lutron Caseta - question for new home

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 08:47 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

So I'm in the process of building a new construction home. I'm going to purchase all the Caseta dimmers/switches and give them to my builder and he will install it all. So I'm set there, especially since electrical is not up my alley (though, after looking at YouTube videos its looks pretty simple).

Anyways, on to the question... most of the configurations in my new home will be 3way (2 switches controlling 1 light or set of lights) - so is the best practice to use 1 caseta switch + 1 pico remote? Or are people just using 2 separate caseta switches in this scenario? Seems to me, that the former is fine and also more cost-efficient. But if there's any reason for the latter, please let me know.

Lastly, there are maybe 1 or 2 4way configurations in the home, from what I've researched, it seems easiest for this is 1 caseta dimmer + 2 pico remotes and call it a day. Can someone please also confirm best practice for this scenario?

TLDR: for 3 way switch should I just use 1 caseta switch + 1 pico remote (can mount it so it looks like switch), and for 4 way, should it just be + 2 pico remotes?

Thanks all - just trying to figure out how many and of each that I need to purchase and provide to my builder.
