Quolsys IQ Panel 2 - Can you control it and/or it's z-wave devices with a smart phone or tablet?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 08:11 PM PDT

I recently bought a new home and it came with this panel installed along with z-wave plus devices including a thermostat, doorbell, garage door, etc. I've connected all the devices to the panel but can't seem to find a way to control things using my phone. I know the panel uses Alarm.com service and they have an app but I don't want to get alarm service just to automate my other devices. Is there an app available where I can do this or somehow link everything to my Google Home?

Please help me keep dogs off the lawn

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:04 PM PDT

So my neighbors dog keeps getting out and this jerk walks over and takes a crap in my yard. This seems to happen every few days. I already talk to the owners but they seem like very lazy people and I don't want to hurt the dog with chili powder.

Is there a way to have my Arlo camera trigger my orbit b-hyve water sprinklers. There is a command for Alexa if I verbally say "Alexa, ask b-hyve to turn in station 2 for 2 minutes" but I can't find a way for the motion detection to trigger a verbal command like that.

Building a new house, looking into water shutoff products. Is it worth it?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 09:26 PM PDT

    I have a few questions:
    1. Is leak detection and shutoff capability worth the price? Does it really reduce the cost of home insurance? If so, by how much?

    1. If worth it, which system should I use? Looking into the Flo by Moen, which seems to be the most feature-rich option and one of the more expensive options. My builder will install for $1k. I found this website which did an amazing review of products on the market. I'll be running home automation using Home Assistant. Regardless of whether I install a water shutoff product, I will place leak detectors under the most high risk areas (washing machine, sinks, etc.). I can get an instant notification IF these detectors are located in the area of a leak. I can also automate things like home/away/sleep modes to help action a shutoff product.

    Thoughts? Advice?

    Broadlink notification issues

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 08:04 PM PDT

Hi guys, I have the broadlink app (not ihc or e-control) installed in iphone and android phone. Lately only my iphone has given me Broadlink notifications and not the android phone.

I set a routine on my door sensor (s2) to notify me when it is open at a certain time period.

    Anyone facing notification issues?

Wirelessly Connecting Smart TV to Hard Drive?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:37 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right sub (if not could you point me in the right direction?), but my wife and I are looking to connect our smart TV to our external hard drive, which houses our movie collection, using a wireless USB.

Do you have any recommendations on good devices to do this with?

#YASQ yet another Shelly question - detached mode with normally closed push button?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:30 PM PDT

Here's my situation, in a country that hates neutral wiring to switches, got a couple of shellys to fix all the worlds problems (COVID, famine, poverty, and lack of neutral wires)...

The idea was that I would shove the shellys in behind the light fixture, which I know will work, that's cool - but the problem with this situation is that my OCD now gets triggered by the fact that the light switch could be in an up or down state and that might be either on or off depending on if you changed the light using the switch or changed the light using an app.

So I want to use a push button switch, mainly a normally open push button switch, to trigger the Shelly. So you push the button and it changes the Shelly state (Shelly would need to detect the LOW->HIGH->LOW state change as wanting to change the light). Is this a possible switch mode? Is this also a possible switch mode in a detached state for smart globes like hue?

    Nest Wiring - Lennox?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:01 PM PDT

So, doing a multi-stage unit in new house for Nest installation. Ended up with a proprietary unit, here's what the wiring and models look like: https://imgur.com/a/DeqadLJ

I did the compatibility checker with google, it seems to be compatible but ABCDE is proprietary to me. I am assuming the following based on previous experience with Lennox units:

    • Black = Common
    • Yellow = Y1
    • Red = Rc
    • White = W1
    • Brown = ????? - I am assuming OB

There's no green wires for fans, I am assuming common wire or Red gets handled like this.

For the MPB multistages, I've see Nests installed before so I am not sure what I am missing here. It's a brand new home build with new lennox install - anyone with insight care to help?

RGB color change NodeRED flow with Home Assistant, Tuya bulbs.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:01 PM PDT

RGB color change NodeRED flow with Home Assistant, Tuya bulbs.

Ok, using Tuya RGBW bulbs that have been flashed to ESPHome and everything controlled with Home Assistant. Have setup a NodeRED flow that when triggered will cycle the colors through on a loop and then when triggered a second time will stop the cycle. Could have done something similar in Home Assistant but I find the the fine time control is a little lacking so the sequence is not as smooth as I wanted.

    The NodeRED Party Bulbs flow.

So with ESPHome you first have to ensure that the white function is turned off so I just put it as the first step in the loop, this way if you trigger the white on it will reset and prevent a bulb that may want to overheat from having an issue as it seems that having the RGB on with the white it can cause and issue.

I setup an empty script to trigger the function in HomeAssistant and pulled the function out to only the one I needed. Changed the output to a simple command and put in a toggle switch. A Javascript to break the loop and a simple off plus a delay if the first one doesn't actually turn it off. The rest of it is basically setting the colors and a delay between. This one uses a base color plus a step between so that is why some of the delays are slightly longer than the others. ESPHome does the transition over about a second by default and visually the delays I put in made it seem like the stops and transitions were just about the same. Currently all I am doing is full colors but it transitions nicely from blue to pink to red to yellow to green to aqua and then repeats the loop. The one thing not shown in the screenshot is I had to add a filter so they only get the stop trigger for the stop sequence.

Anyway for anyone interested you can grab the flow from here https://github.com/nightshade00013/RGB_Party_Bulbs

And when setting up the empty script you can get most everything from here on how to make it work https://bonani.tech/how-to-trigger-a-node-red-flow-from-the-home-assistant-ui/

    Wired Open/Close Sensor

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 06:03 PM PDT

Does anyone know of an zwave Open/Close sensor with dry contact sensors that is able to be powered via a wall outlet? I'm redoing my garage door sensors and would like to get away from battery powered sensors if possible.

Edit: Forgot to add that I'm looking for a zwave sensor.

Prewiring for blind automation - 3.5mm TRRS jacks for PWM or RS-485. Thoughts?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 05:37 PM PDT

I'm replacing some windows, which presents the opportunity to run wires through a large swath of wall with minimal destruction. I'm looking for some input on wires to run before it's too late and some feedback on my thoughts so far. This is my first automation endeavor!

I'd like to automate the 6 blinds in one room. I thinking of running CAT5 cabling that terminates at a 3.5mm TRRS plug at the window jambs.

3.5mm TRRS because it would look the cleanest for a wire connection through the side of the window extension jambs. RJ-45 would be ugly and an eyesore if I ever decided to get rid of the blinds. 4 conductors is just the right number for RS-485, but if I do PWM I'd drop it down to TRS.

CAT5 because it's plentiful. I'd use one pair for 12v, one pair for ground, and 1 or 2 pairs for communication.

I think I'd like to not do home runs from each window, so for communication I'm thinking of either sending a raw PWM signal to all the blinds, or using RS-485 and putting some sort of a microcontroller at each blind. The motor would just be a servo coupled to the tilt rod.

There's a complexity on the control side, if I did continuous servos then all of them would need to be perfectly in sync, if I did positional servos I'd need a high torque servo that could do 360 degrees (slim pickings). I'd love to have just the servo in the blind with PWM, but with the constraints I just mentioned, I fear I'll need some control and feedback at each blind - especially for calibration.

    Thoughts? Thanks!

1 Google Home light (I forget what it actually is, got it from reddit secret Santa)

I just bought the X95H Sony TV. Not sure if this gets connected too?

Onkyo receiver. Not sure if this connects too?

    Thinking Google nest max too.

Any issues with what I've picked? Any suggestions for more stuff?

I'm buying a Tesla Model Y soon too, anything that connects with that?

Add Wifi to a home sauna?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:54 AM PDT

I have a Clearlight (jacuzzi) premier IS-1 model sauna. https://infraredsauna.com/premier-is-1-far-infrared-sauna/

Some of the other models have Wifi control options but this model doesn't. It's controlled from touchpads on the inside and outside of the sauna.

I've searched far and wide for ideas on how to turn it on remotely with no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can do it? I only need to turn it on to heat up before I use it. Thanks!!!

Simple Door Sensor to trigger smart things

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 04:32 PM PDT

I've hit a weird wall where I feel like I must be looking at this the wrong way. I want to setup a simple door sensor (these are usually magnetic) and when a door opens / closes, I want to trigger a light to go on / off.

I'm on the Nest ecosystem - which isn't really helpful here. Their door sensors are (1) quite expensive and (2) don't do anything other than trigger alarms / notifications.

I can't find another solution that is as simple as a connection to IFTTT or an existing hubless system.

    Zwave ceiling fan controller retrofit?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:07 PM PDT

Is there really no retrofit controller kit to put in your ceiling fan/light to control it via zwave? This seems like a gaping hole in the market. There's no way I'm going to be able to re-wire my 1960's house to get separate light and fan wiring to zwave wall switches, but replacing the in-fixture controller box is beyond easy.

I know there is an Insteon version of this but I have a budding zwave installation and was hoping to keep it all on the same system and not have to add more peripherals to my hassio/Pi.

Anyone know of anything that fits the bill?

Renovating the house - Smart Lights/Thermostat - What would you do?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:22 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm going to be soon renovating the house with a full rewire/plumbing, the works. I'm looking at options for smart lights. I currently have Kasa smart bulbs, but I dislike not being able to switch the light on for a second when I run into a room to pick something up without the voice command.

I'm not finding any details on the best wired smart light switches - if they do exist. Can you recommend one? I'm in the UK if that makes a difference. I'd ideally plug into Google Home as I have the Nest Thermostat.

Additionally, is there anything else you would recommend to look into for someone fulling refurbing with a new rewire?

Home Assistant: For when Google Assistant fucks up and the radio stops working.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 12:35 PM PDT

Soo... today I got a complaint from my mom about how "Hey Google, spiel WDR2 Aachen und Region" ("play [radio station]", in German) won't play that radio station, but some weird ass music on Youtube. I couldn't get it to work either... Guess Google fucked up once again.

Long story short, I can't seem to get it working either. So I created a virtual helper switch in Home Assistant that, when turned on, will automatically play said station from its stream URL on all kitchen & dining room speakers, and then turn itself off.

The downside is that there seems to be some huge amount of buffering happening on the Chromecast devices, which makes startup take quite a while (about 30s). But that's an acceptable tradeoff for actually having working radio.
